Much shorter than it has any right to be, given how long it's taken me to actually finish. Plot? Uh, no, not really. But anyhow... She's been away. He's been unwell.
---
He looks at her like sheâs the most welcome hallucination heâs ever had.
Kia closes the door slowly behind her as she takes in this chaos of a makeshift apothecary, the loungeroom in an utter state of disarray and her beloved not faring much better, red-nosed and unshaven and dressed in a black silken pyjama and robe ensemble which, while inarguably stylish, was very definitely not his usual late afternoon wear.
And not at all what she had been expecting to come home to.
A miscellany of potions and concoctions and gods-know-what-elses lie scattered across the coffee table. A teacup, mostly empty. Two tissue boxes, one apparently even emptier than the teacup. Some sort of book...no, manual. Looks instructional. A wilderness of failed curatives.
Oh my god.
She walks further into the room. The air smells of menthol and embers.
âBabe, what are⊠Are you⊠What have you even been doing hâŠ?â
You absolute beautiful total disaster.
âTrying not to⊠hh-HH âŠlet thiâŠthis-damn-coldâŠâ Cerberus turns from her as his sentence dissolves, the syllables collapsing against one another in a desperate rush to give way to greater need and deep breath of purpose, and he raises a finger in urgent, undeniable pause. "Huh-TSSCH-uu!" Hurriedly claiming a series of tissues in a brief, expectant hiatus, he surrenders completely and sneezes again. "Hh-AATSCHH-uu! *snff-FF!*" A quiet groan in the aftermath. He excuses himself, adds another tissue to the set, blows his nose and immolates the lot. "Pardon me." He sighs. "Trying not to let this godsdamned cold win,â he manages, with an accompanying sharp sniffle. Neither heavy congestion nor the way his voice cracks slightly lessens any of the seething distaste in his tone.
âOh, honey.â Kia brushes some errant hair back from his face. :Bless you.: She touches a tender kiss to his temple. âYouâre getting your ass kicked.â
She offers him a soft smile to hopefully lessen a little bit of truth's sting. "C'mon, shift over," she says gently as she joins her beloved on the couch, nestling up beside him, resolutely ignoring every caution he tries to give her advising against doing so. Notably half-hearted as those cautions are.
Because while itâs true that he very much doesnât want her to catch this, heâs also well aware itâs more than likely already too late for such concerns. The entire house is probably some sort of incubation epicentre. And, sincerity of expressed warnings aside, the entire sorry vista surely constitutes warning enough. He's fairly certain he couldn't look more biohazardous if he tried.
Cerberus sighs again, sniffling again immediately afterwards, and gives his bonded a look of resignation.
Further elaboration hardly seems necessary.
But also he doesnât press the issue because in truth the last thing he wants is to send her away. Heâs not even sure he has the energy to insist on it, anyway; heâd be infuriated about this entire ridiculous circumstance if he wasnât so damn exhausted. So, small obligatory protests done, with another damp sniffle Cerberus shifts some disarrayed blanketry out of the way and wraps an arm around Kiaâs waist, drawing her close.
Her soft perfume of violet, strawberry and vanilla is lost on him anywhere outside of memory right now, but her presence is more than enough and he closes his eyes for a moment, just appreciating the simple fact of her being here beside him at last; he's missed her immensely, constantly.
âYou know, you couldâve just asked me to come back, if you wanted me here,â Kia muses as she nestles further into his heat, adding, âIt wouldn't have been a big deal,â without accusation. She leans her head against his shoulder and looks up at him with gentle azure gaze, her unspoken thoughts of Iâd always choose you. How do you still not know that? readable despite her not voicing them.
And he does, of course, know that â in fact, itâs the very reason he wouldnât ask. Cerberus sniffles thickly, wiping his nose. âAh, love. I'd hardly ask you to put yourself anywhere near thisâ" He gestures around the room in a general presentation of contempt for the whole situation. "âvortex of infectious absurdity,â he concludes, thick congestion lacing his words. He clears his throat but it doesnât make any notable impact against the wreckery his voice has become. "And it's about your... *SNFF!* ...your autodoby."
Kia peers at him. âMyâŠwhat?â
âYour auâŠâ Cerberus, all too aware that several critical consonants are unequivocally not working for him, rolls his eyes at himself. Honestly. Taking another fresh succession of tissues from a very rapidly depleting supply, he blows his nose forcefully but completely ineffectively.
He excuses himself once more and tries again; it goes equally badly.
Kia, baffled, raises her hands in a friendly but very clear nope sorry babe no idea expression, accompanied by a gentle little laugh that she just canât help.
A long-suffering and immensely frustrated look comes her way, followed by a resigned, defeated sigh as her beloved entirely gives up. âFree will.â
For a moment, this makes even less sense to Kia. âWhy wouldâŠâ she begins, but cuts herself off in triumphant realisation. âOh, autonomy!â She laughs. "Oh, sweetheart."
âThatâs what I s⊠hh-hh! I...â And even this is hijacked, and the Demon king capitulates entirely, doubling over desperate into crooked elbow, âHuh-TSCHH-uu! Ah-HEHTSCHuu!âÂ
He takes some moments of bleary recovery, Kia's heartrate spiking alongside the :Gods, forgive me: Cerberus Mindsends her.
"Oh, bless you, babe." Kia doesn't try to fight the thrill that flashes through her and she wraps herself around her bonded to kiss him again; a kiss deeper, more needful, than is probably wise. But wisdom isn't what she's craving right now.
âYou know what? Youâre going to stop talking and let me make my own choices.â She brushes a stray lock of hair from his eyes, touches the softest of lingering kisses to his forehead and meets his gaze. :Talking really isn't working out for you anyway.: "And besidesâ" Another kiss, deeper again, and she presses her arousal against his, salacious, wanton.
:âyou know we both want the same thing.:

I really love the little scribbles you do next to the boys in emotional moments.
They remind me of a certain feeling I have in emotionally charged moments that I've never found a word for and I've never heard described in stories but I think your drawings "describe" the feeling really well! Spot on, actually.
(you draw magnificentally!!)
Have good week.
Ohmigosh you noticed?!!??!
Awwwee!! Thank you so much! I absolutely love adding that scribbly detail to those emotional moments as you mentioned, yeah. Every character has their own like...energy and a certain "place" where their energy is like "stored" or originates from...if that makes sense. Those lil scribbles are something like ninpo, but it can't be like...harnessed or used. It kinda just...exists.
It's very intentional tho, so I really appreciate you commenting on it đ€âš Thank you thank you and I hope you have a good week as well!
#ace answers#no lie i got ridiculously excited about this ask#oh i needed this today#thank you again so much! you seriously made my day đ#:)

Is it worth watching Megamind rules? I know Iâm not the target, but Iâm curious yet also really really nervous. I know itâs for a younger audience but Iâm still very on the fence and nervous. Also, love your writing
Omg, thank you, and thank you also for asking and yes yes yes 100% it's worth watching! It got crapped on by a bunch of people who decided based on the trailer alone that it was going to suck (how fun, a movie about a guy who everyone decided would be bad despite not knowing him got a spinoff show that...everyone decided would be bad despite not watching it, lol), so there's a lot of hate out there for it. I'm assuming you've caught wind of some of that, and that's why you're nervous? But for what it's worth, I was staring at the screen like :D basically the whole time.
Some more specific notes below the cut, but the tl;dr is please do give it a chance, if you can find the time. A G-rated direct-to-stream spinoff show wasn't what a lot of people were hoping for, and there were some folks who watched it and didn't care for it. But from a writing and storytelling standpoint, I think it is genuinely good! If you go in expecting a cute kids' show with some silly jokes and social misfits finding their way forward together, and keep an open mind, I don't think you'll be disappointed-- in fact I think you may be pleasantly surprised.
Just a gentle heads-up on some stuff because I'm not sure what you've heard about the show yet, and I'm also not sure what your existing expectations are!
The show was given a shoestring budget and not a lot of time to go from writers' room to final product, and yes, there are places where you can tell. But that was always going to be the case-- Dreamworks was absolutely not going to be spending big bucks on a franchise they've barely even acknowledged in more than a decade-- and it wasn't the fault of the people making the show. And even with the low budget, I think the animation is still genuinely solid, especially in later episodes! The people who worked on it really did a great job with what they were given.
And the writing!!! Holy shit!!! My skin is clear my crops are watered etc. The original writers handled this project and they absolutely delivered. Megamind & Roxanne's whole Thing progresses and grows and blooms in a really sweet and realistic way. Roxanne & Chum have a great dynamic. (Minion's name needed to be changed for legal reasons, but the writers worked that into the show and I gotta say, as a trans person, it was really lovely to see everyone else respond to "actually, because of [spoiler], my name is Chum now" with "oh! cool okay" and just keep rolling. I love that that was modeled for kids.) The character development is tangible; we get to watch Megamind really grow as a person and come into his own over the course of the series. And the new characters are really fun-- I genuinely enjoyed Keiko and everyone else.
Even if you never watch it (it's OK if you don't!) please just know: this was not a cash grab; Megamind Rules was made by people who truly cared about this world and these characters.
It's also worth noting that Megamind Versus the Doom Syndicate (the extended pilot) recaps a bunch of the same lessons as the original movie, so it can feel a little bit "...didn't we JUST do this??" but I'm pretty sure that was because Dreamworks didn't want to rely on kids to watch a 13 year old movie rated PG instead of G in order to get context. So like, I get it. And it's still cute! But it did mean I was nervous about what the rest of the series would be like until I was laughing my ass off halfway through Episode 2. If you're nervous, you can probably skip MMVtDS.
But yeah. I truly do think Megamind Rules is worth watching, and I've been so sad about the reception it received. Thank you so much for asking about it, and not just deciding it sucks and moving on. I appreciate you.
#megamind rules#megamind#AND THE FISH JOKES#OH MY GOD SO MANY FISH JOKES#worth it for the fish jokes alone really#also the executive producer voices one of the brainbots and you can tell he is having SO much fun lmao#it's ridiculous#anyway if kids' shows aren't your thing and you don't mind being a little confused#you CAN just watch the last 3 episodes#i would also recommend Episodes 7 and 8 and 9#and Episode 11 before watching the last 3#i feel like those ones are the most plot-heavy#but also if you get started and you're like ''noooo ahg it's not for me'' that's ok#some folks honestly didn't care for it; that's gonna be true of anything#personally i loved it#megamind rules exists and you can't stop it or me#askbasket#i've actually been meaning to watch it again#i think i'll start doing that now#thank you nonny!

Little Women Amy x Laurie Fake Dating Modern AU
Theodore Laurence and Amy March run into each other in France, after years of not speaking.
The not speaking thing wasnât their fault, though, not really. But Laurie and Amyâs sister Jo, whoâd been his best friend, had a big falling out a couple of years before, after he told her he loved her and she told him she didnât. Consequently, Laurie took upon himself a March embargo, determined to completely forget about Jo and anything that could remind him of her, which included her family.
Which is a shame, since heâd been quite close with the March sisters, and came to regret not keeping in touch with Meg and her husband, his good friend John, and their new babies, as well as not being there as Beth got sick, and no longer seeing Amy, whom heâd started to be real friends with as well.
So, the contrast of denying himself their presence and suddenly being completely surrounded by Amy almost overwhelms Laurie, but as it turns out, heâs nothing but happy upon seeing her, as well as relieved.
Amy March is as bubbly as he remembers, even though sheâs older, and accordingly more mature. Sheâs not as dramatic, he thinks, and seems to be more careful of what she says and how she moves. For a second, he reflects on how the innocence and freedom of childhood is truly gone, if Amy, the youngest among them, is now a grown woman, but mostly he marvels at the adult sheâs become.
Amy, for one, is ecstatic at seeing Laurie again â heâd been severely missed in the March household, and while Jo had been annoyingly vague about what had happened between them, they got the gist of it, and gave them the room they needed to process it all.
Amy always thought it was unfair, though. That just because he and Jo had a fight, that no one else could be in contact with him either. Sure, theyâd been best friends (which theyâd never missed a chance to remind the others of, always going off on their own lone adventures), but Laurie had at least been friends with them, too. But they werenât allowed to say anything, and Laurie became a ghost, vaguely somewhere across Europe, but as good as dead for Jo March, and so as well for the rest of them.
Finding him in France, though, leaves no room for Amyâs grievances, or her insecurities. They were friends, itâs clear now. They are friends. They can have their own relationship, independent of Jo, and sheâs so happy to have her friend back, to have back a piece of home thatâd been missing for long.
They become almost lifelines for each other in the foreign country. Laurie has his contacts, and Amy has made friends in the art course sheâs taking there, but the two quickly become inseparable, almost as if making up for all the time they lost not talking - she fills him in in all things March; he regales her with tales of his gap year misadventures. And a misplaced piece of the universe rights itself a little bit.
So, when Amy needs an reason to refuse a date with Fred Vaugh â an old acquaintance, here on business, whom yes, sheâs admittedly been flirting with for the past few weeks, but whom she canât, in good conscience, actually go out with, because while heâs perfectly nice and respectable, he doesnât actually do anything for her romantically, and wouldnât that be leading him on? â Laurieâs is the first name to pop into her head, and is, she thinks, a perfectly valid excuse. Well, valid, with a few tweaks. Namely, saying that heâs her boyfriend, as opposed to the far truer, yet less usable, boy friend.
When she explains the situation, Laurie finds it weird. Then funny. Then, given the opportunity to act out the role at a party she knows Fred will be at, downright hilarious. Amy would be furious at him for making fun of her situation, if he didnât manage to, at the same time, make a convincing enough showing that Fred leaves her alone. And, she has to admit, it is pretty funny.
It hadnât been anything more than that, really. Shortly after, Fred went back to London, and the whole thing was simply a lark between the two friends, notable only because Laurie starts referring to Amy as a heartbreaker.
It only becomes a thing a couple of months later.
Amy has since returned home, her summer course over, and spends the first weeks of Autumn in Massachusetts, prepping for her final school year, looking after Beth as she waits for test results about her remission, babysitting the twins for Meg, and avoiding telling Jo about her summer, since sheâs not quite sure how her stance on Laurie has shifted (or not) in the past few years.
This becomes apparent when Laurie calls her, a few weeks into the semester, to cash in.
Apparently, Amy has inspired him, and Laurie is returning to the US as well. Seeing her has made him realize he misses home, and, admittedly, his grandfather has been on him about what is an acceptable amount of time for a gap year. This decision prompted him to reach out to Jo. They talked, for a bit, and mostly everything was fine. Great even, and signs pointed to them being able to return to their friendship after all! Until Laurie had the brilliant idea to tell her heâs dating her sister.
Amy, which she feels he deserves, promptly laughs in his face when he tells her.
He says heâs completely and totally over Jo, he is! (Amy maintains a healthy skepticism about this, but lets him go on) It seems that Jo had been looking forward to seeing him again, but adamant that her feelings hadnât changed, and hoped heâd finally moved on. Heâd made assurance after assurance, but the only way he could think of to truly prove it was to tell her he was seeing someone â which isnât completely a lie, as he had dated other people in the meantime â only to then pop out Amyâs name when Jo asked about it â which is completely a lie.
Here is where Amy questions his reasoning, since he could have said literally any other name beyond Joâs baby sisterâs, and how could he think sheâd take that well, and Jo was going to think sheâd kept it from her, Laurie, did he have any idea how furious she will be when she sees her at Christmas??
But Laurie maintains that Amy owes him for Fred Vaughn â which has her rolling her eyes every time he mentions it, because câmon, that was nothing like this â and that sheâd been the first person heâd thought of â which does warm her heart a little â and who else could he rope into a fake relationship who could understand the whole thing with Jo?
âFake relationshipâ stops Amy in her tracks.
Apparently, Laurie has a plan. A whole plan.
Amy tries to explain that all her lie had demanded of him was going to cool party. Laurie doesnât see the relevance. Amy wants to yell at him through the phone.
Laurie will be arriving in Massachusetts shortly before Amyâs winter break, giving him only a while to face Jo on his own (and hopefully mend some bridges), at which point Amy will return home, spend her break cuddling with him by the fire â âIs that really so bad, Ames?â â convincingly enough that Jo sees he has completely moved on. Come the New Year, Amy will return to school, and eventually theyâll break the news of their uncoupling, stating how theyâre better as friends, and everything will go back to normal.
Itâs so easy!
Sure.
It starts off not easy at all, when the very next call Amy receives is from Jo, demanding to know every single detail of her relationship with Laurie.
For all intents and purposes, Amy is pretty proud of her performance, actually, given how little time she had to prepare. She thinks she manages to sound convincing yet apologetic, explaining how theyâd gotten close in Paris and had been keeping it low-key because they werenât sure where it was going yet, plus the long-distance while Amy went back to the States and Laurie stayed in Europe, not to mention his previously chilly relationship with the rest of the family (a not-intentional, but also not-untrue dig at Jo, there, which Amy isnât sure she gets or not). She talks about how she totally intended on telling her when they knew it was serious, but Laurie totally blindsided her by telling Jo so soon. The best lies, Amy finds, have a little bit of the truth.
âSo itâs serious?â Jo asks, and Amy hesitates for a second. A serious relationship. With Laurie. Faking a serious relationship with Laurie.
Her heart does a weird little twist she isnât sure comes from lying to her sister, the anticipation of the scale of the performance sheâll have to give when theyâre all together, or something else entirely.
âI guess.â she settles on, and promptly puts it out of her mind. Thereâs no point in spiraling for the intervening weeks, she tells herself, even if she does get progressively more stressed out as the semester ends.
When she does get home, though, itâs all so familiar, her anxiety just vanishes.
Sheâs missed her family. As close as theyâve always been, itâs always been tough being away from them all for months at a time. As soon as she walks through the door, itâs all hugs and smiles, and she feels nothing but welcomed.
And, admittedly, despite everything else, sheâs missed Laurie, too. Heâs already there when she arrives, like heâd told her heâd be, and Amy doesnât even think about it before hugging him tightly when she sees him. Itâs been ages since theyâve been together in person, after all, and this after months of spending every day together. No matter what else is going on, she just missed him.
Itâs only when Jo chides at them to âbreak it off, lovebirdsâ that Amy remembers, and hopes her resulting awkward smile/grimace is seen as embarrassment for being with her âboyfriendâ in front of her family, instead of regret over her every decision of the past few months.
Other than that, though, it ends up being not too bad. As much as Amy is loath to admit it, Laurie wasnât too far off in his plan. They donât have to act that lovey-dovey, just sit together at gatherings, hold hands once in a while, talk amongst themselves for a bit. Itâs actually remarkably similar to how theyâd behaved nearly every day in Paris. Amy hadnât even thought of it as romantic, though, not until now, when the contrast of how they used to be, in their childhoods, is so apparent.
Her familyâs reactions arenât so bad either. Dad makes a joke about Laurie having to watch himself from now on, but since itâs been well established how much he loves him and the Laurences, itâs never meant as nor taken seriously. Marmee attempts to have a talk with her about their relationship, but Amy manages to abort that pretty quickly. Meg looks at them like she wants to say something, but doesnât ever actually do it. Beth, bless her, just tells her sheâs happy for them. And Jo makes a few comments here and there, which almost get to Amy, until she reminds herself that the whole purpose of this thing was for Jo and Laurie to get their friendship back.
And it even seems to be working. Since sheâs been home, Amyâs watched Jo and Laurie joke around, argue and play off each other almost exactly like they did when they were kids. She canât bring herself to talk about it with Laurie, but he hasnât said anything to indicate otherwise, either, not that it was going poorly between them, nor that it was going in any other direction at all.
Sheâll admit she was skeptical, when Laurie explained his plan to her, and that a large part of it was because she wasnât ever truly sure if Laurie was really over her sister, as he claimed. Heâd seemed so in love with her, before. And heâd been so heartbroken, when sheâd rejected him. A small part of Amy wondered if he wasnât just saying all of this for show, and if, once he saw Jo again, his feelings wouldnât come rushing back. Amy does hope not. Even if she had her doubts, she wants for Laurie to be over Jo, really. She never did think they be very good together, is all. And she doesnât want them to go through that heartbreak again.
If she watches them closely, just to try and see if thereâs anything in Laurieâs eyes beyond friendly affection⊠Well, sheâs just looking out for him, isnât she? For both of them, really, or even for all of them, because everyoneâs been excited to have the March and Laurence families together again, and another big emotional fight is the last thing they need.
And if sheâs a little relieved every time Laurie notices her there and comes over, slinging his arm over her shoulders, or giving her a peck on the cheek⊠Well, thatâs not really anyoneâs business, is it?
It all goes fine, though. Jo and Laurie are perfectly friendly, not a hint of romantic drama nor icy coolness between them, and everyoneâs happy through the holidays, and no oneâs seemed suspicious of Amy and Laurie at all.
Amyâs all but forgotten about the plan and her anxieties over it, until it becomes all too real right on top of her.
Literally.
On Christmas morning, after theyâve opened their presents, and once Laurie and his grandfather have joined them for breakfast, Amyâs just greeting him, like sheâs done every day, when Beth pipes up.
Amy hadnât realized. She hadnât been there when they decorated the house this year, even though their decorations havenât changed in years.
As it always has been, right in the middle of the archway that separates the kitchen from the dining room, and right on top of where Amy and Laurie are standing, is a sprig of mistletoe.
Itâs not even a big deal. Beth is the only one who noticed, and then Jo, who turned to look at them when she said it, but everyone else is busy, no one is really paying attention to them.
Yet, in Amyâs mind, this is maybe the worst thing that couldâve happen.
Mistletoe. Of course thereâs mistletoe. How could she not have remembered the mistletoe?
Laurie seems as dumbstruck as she is, but he recovers quickly. Theyâre supposed to be a couple, after all. Couples arenât supposed to be completely terrified by the mere notion that they kiss.
Amy only has time to register that itâs happening before it happens. Laurie inches his face closer to hers, and Amy doesnât move away, doesnât say anything. She meets him when he reaches her, and they kiss.
Laurie only intended it to be a chaste kiss, anyways. Something tangible enough for the others to not get suspicious, but light enough as to not make things uncomfortable, threading the needle to slip under the guise of them not wanting to kiss in front of their families.
It was supposed to be a chaste kiss.
Itâs not that.
Itâs something else entirely.
Before he knows it, not only has Laurie stepped closer into Amyâs space, but his hands have come up to her cheeks, and Amy has responded by placing hers on his waist. His eyes are closed, yes, he canât see the room surrounding them, but all of a sudden he isnât even aware of it. The only thing heâs aware of is Amy.
Itâs so familiar. Sheâs Amy. Heâs known her almost all their lives. Theyâve been close for most of that time, have seen each other in all sorts of ways, have touched each other numerous times, theyâve shared friendly kisses and teasing ones, theyâve even kissed under the mistletoe before, a simple kiss on the cheek, when they were very little, after which Amy had blushed furiously, and Jo mercilessly made fun of them for the rest of the day.
But itâs also so new. Heâs never been this close to Amy. Has never touched her like this, has never known what her lips tasted like before now. Peach chapstick. It should all be so simple and familiar, and Laurie should just let go and pretend it was nothing, but it isnât and he canât.
He has no idea how long theyâve been kissing, when Meg and Johnâs twins barge into the kitchen, crashing into Amy and Laurie and sending them almost flying apart. Jo âooohâs at them teasingly, but itâs quickly forgotten about, in the bustle of the twinsâ arrival, and the adults trying to get everyone to sit down and have breakfast.
Except that Laurie canât forget about it. He canât stop thinking about it, in fact. He canât even make sense of it. He tries to catch Amyâs eye, to try and see how sheâs feeling, but she wonât meet his. Is she being glib? Did it really mean nothing to her at all, just a fake kiss for their fake courtship? Or is she totally weirded out, unable to meet his eye? Could she be just as lost as he is?
The rest of the day passes by quickly, almost in a blur, and before he knows it, goodbyes are being exchanged, everyone headed back home for the night.
Amyâs barely looked at him since the kiss, but he tries one more time to talk to her before they leave.
And though she does look at him, this time, and smiles, gives him a quick hug goodbye, even, sheâs gone before he can barely say anything.
She clearly doesnât want to talk about it, then, so Laurie decides to try his best at putting it out of his mind. It was a kiss. So what? A great kiss, yes, but that was that. It was part of a plan. His plan. A plan that went great, even. Him and Jo are friends again, the Marches donât hate him, and all they have left to do is explain they decided to break it off, in a few weeks. That they tried, but determined they were better of as friends. Him and Amy. Friends. Because thatâs what they are.
Except that friends donât think about each other for as long as Laurie starts finding himself thinking about Amy that week. Friends donât wonder what it would have been like if theyâd kissed any other time in the past couple of days, or if theyâd been alone when they had, or wondering about any scenario where Laurie could have kissed Amy again, or for longer. And friends probably take each otherâs calls, too. Which Amy hasnât done since Christmas Day.
While Laurie understands she could perfectly well be busy, which would be a logic assumption from her curt text responses saying just that, Laurie also knows how it feels like to be brushed off, and it quickly becomes obvious sheâs just avoiding him.
He wants nothing more than to talk to her, be near her again, something in the back of his mind desperate to be with her. Itâs like seeing her in Paris after all those years set something off in him that canât be satisfied, and it was only made stronger by that goddamn kiss.
But he wonât push her. He hopes she isnât mad at him for the whole scheme, it is possible it was more taxing than heâd anticipated, after all. Sheâs probably weirded out by the kiss and needs some space. Okay. Space. He can do that. He wonât push.
He does count down the days until he sees her again, though.
Namely, at the Laurenceâs New Yearâs party, a week later.
Though Amy hasnât explicitly stated sheâll come, the Marches have all been attending for years, and while there have been exceptions granted for illness, or work, Laurie sees (hopes for) no reason for Amy not to attend.
Heâs already planned out what he wants to say, how heâs sorry for the whole thing, how he understands if she feels put off by him, how he just wants the two of them to be okay, and they never have to mention anything about the whole mess ever again.
Of course, though, as soon as he sees her, walking through the door after her sisters, the first thought that comes into his mind is how he wants to kiss her again.
Instead, he turns right back around and gets a drink.
He spends the next hour telling himself to get it together, that itâs just Amy, and heâs being ridiculous, and only then goes to talk to her.
Amy is reticent about being alone with Laurie, but also knows sheâs avoided it for as long as she can, and they really should talk.
Itâs not like anything will happen, right? Just because theyâre alone, and Amyâs been thinking about the kiss, as well as basically everything that happened over Christmas ever since then, it doesnât mean anything will happen when she actually talks to Laurie, other than just that. Talking.
Aware sheâs trying way too hard to convince herself of this, Amy follows Laurie, becoming determined to push all of her internal doubts and bubbling feelings to the side and just have a talk with her friend. Theyâll clear the air, heâll tell her how the kiss meant nothing and will never happen again, and theyâll be back to normal. Friends. As it should be. And anything Amy might be feeling thatâs clearly been brought on by the nostalgia of being home and not having been in a relationship in a while and not at all by this new-found closeness with Laurie and inability to pay attention to anything else when heâs near, it will all just fade away.
When theyâre alone, he does apologize for his scheme and how maybe it went too far. He thanks her for going along with it, but that he never meant to make her uncomfortable, and he probably didnât think it through as he should have, and if she wants, they can just come clean to their families right now.
Something in Amy melts a little. Sheâs not mad at him, not really. The fake relationship thing was weird, sure, but in the end, she gets it, and if things can be good between all of them in the end, then it was worth it. It was all maybe a bit more than sheâd bargained for, but that doesnât really matter does it? Itâll all just go away.
She also predicts that telling everyone they were lying now will just make things worse and more confusing, so Amy tells him she appreciates it, but thereâs no need, theyâll just lay low and stick to the original timeline.
They both leave the room feeling better for having hashed it out, but still a little disappointed. Itâs been agreed. Theyâll just let the next few weeks go by, and thatâll be that. Back to normal, and no possibility for anything else. Great.
The rest of the party goes well, as light and fun as it can be. And if Amy and Laurie barely leave the otherâs side during it, well, to anyone else, theyâre supposed to be in a relationship, right? Thatâs normal. Beyond even that, theyâre friends, itâs totally okay! Just like before, Amy squashes any feelings, even part of her is telling herself to enjoy it while it lasts.
Either way, when Mr. Laurence announces to the party that itâs only a couple of minutes till midnight, of course Amy and Laurie find themselves next to each other.
The panic from their first kiss is gone, and a certain inevitability remains over them. Well, of course this would happen. Of course, as a couple theyâll be expected to kiss at the stroke of midnight. When they turn to each other, Amyâs prepared to shrug it off like just something else theyâll have to do â she does not want to be caught off guard again â but finds Laurie already looking at her, a slight smile on his lips, and she canât help but mirror him.
When the clock strikes midnight, cheers go up around them, but Amy and Laurie are oblivious. This one doesnât even start as a peck. For all her distancing herself from it, Amy leans into the kiss fully intending to savor it this time. And for all his denial over it, Laurie does the same.
Before long, Amyâs hands are reaching up into Laurieâs hair, and his arms are circling her waist. One kiss turns into two, then three, as they slowly disentangle themselves to get some air.
Amy feels lightheaded, her body against Laurieâs, their foreheads pressed together and her eyes still closed. She canât push it away this time. She wants to do that again. She wants to kiss Laurie forever, if thatâs even possible. She just wants Laurie.
She doesnât feel able to say anything right now, but Laurie beats her to it.
He says heâs been wanting to do that again since the last time, and Amy canât help but agree.
She opens her eyes, sees Laurie, looking at her like heâs just had some revelation of his own, and Amy wonders just how long theyâve been headed here without realizing it. Before Christmas? Since Paris? Maybe even before that? Either way, standing here now, it feels inevitable. Her and Laurie, itâs just⊠Itâs fitting. She doesnât want to let go.
Amy drops the pretense.
âWhat are we doing, Laurie?â she asks, softly,
âI donât knowâ he answers. âDo you want to stop?â
She shakes her head no, and he smiles.
âCan you justâŠâ Amy adds. She needs to make sure. âThis isnât⊠Itâs not the plan, right? It feels, different, at least for me, so just tell me, Laurie, is this still about that? Is it still about Jo, about getting things back to how they were?â
Laurie shakes his head, already interjecting as soon as Amy finishes speaking âNo! No, itâs different for me too. Itâs not⊠Itâs certainly not about Jo. Amy, I havenât been able to stop thinking about you in days. Actually, probably years. I donât want things to go back to how they were. Not if they can be better.â
âYeah?â
âYeah.â
Amy canât help but smile brightly. âI havenât been able to stop thinking about you either. This feels⊠I donât know what it is, but⊠Better, yeah. Betterâs good.â
Laurieâs grinning right along with her, and he has, frankly, waited long enough, and dips his head to kiss her again.
When they finally separate, Amy asks âSo, you still think we should go tell our families weâve broken up?â
Laurie laughs, the whole plan heâd concocted feeling like a lifetime ago. âWell, maybe not right now. Or in the next few weeks. Or years. I donât know, how about we just see where this goes?â
Amy grins. âThat sounds good, yes.â
The two kiss one more time, blissfully unaware of the party going on around them, the Marches and Laurences and other guests toasting, and celebrating, and awaiting the New Year unfolding in front of them all.

like why did they change where Vegeta was when Cell announced the cell games in the anime
why did they make this vegeta starting shit with yamcha instead of chillin in the lab with his family? why did they take Bulma out of the lab? Why'd they say she was Out while Dr Brief was repairing 16? Why did they change Bulma working on advanced robotics to running in late with her baby?
it's the same scene except: - Bulma's actively at work being a scientist - Vegeta's not being rude to her (or anyone else!) - Vegeta waits for Trunks instead of leaving the room - Cell interrupted the airwaves, which means Trunks and Vegeta were just hanging out with Bulma and Dr B while they were working
Those are all Great Character Details!! That the anime rails against!!
#these cowards afraid of showing Vegeta actively choosing to be around his wife and child even when he's Bad#Because Goku who is Good never ever even once makes that choice onscreen outside of filler#and then they justify that choice by making Chi-Chi seem horrid and unreasonable for (checks notes) Not Wanting Her Child to Die#anyway I am once again being bitter about anime vs manga klasjdklasd#I can't believe I let the anime convince me I hated Goku man Goku's SUCH a good and ridiculous character in the manga#the anime just SUCKS at letting him be who he's always been#and has to reframe and recontextualize and reword everything he does so that it seems like he's Actually Quite Mature and Thoughtful nO#THAT's VEGETA YOU COWARDS#also the fact that bulma said she wouldn't live with him at the beginning of this arc to him casually hanging out with her and trunks#after cell beat his ass and humbled him is REALLY GOOD SUBTEXT for their shared relationship having improved without showing it#it's great subtext for all three of them and toei just went 'nah' and decided to make it a whole group shot so ...? Master Roshi could sit#and explain how ??? Tournaments Work??? Just so Cell could log on and also explain how tournaments work?? God it's been so long#since I've watched the anime and now when I do it just makes me mad aklsdjskja the manga is SOOOOO much better#there are some spots where the pacing is more ideal in the anime like goku turning ssj for the first time but like man. everything else is.#like why are you making Goku snarky with Vegeta dude his clapbacks are SO much funnier when they're just Tactless Honesty#like Vegeta's not insulted by Snark bitch he grew up in the Freeza force that man was raised by THE bitchiest drag queens#Vegeta's insulted by someone saying something deeply and insultingly True to his face as if it's the fucking weather#Goku in the anime is like 'a battle of wits hoho' but Goku's purity is part of the joke he's not snippy he's just got no social etiquette#He's just honest! He's not trying to be insulting. That's what MAKES it insulting! That's the WHOLE GAG of why Vegeta can't stand him#Goku is always just telling the truth and it's always the rudest shit Vegeta's ever heard in his life#'it's a sunny day! i'm way stronger than you! see you out there bud!' 10000% Genuinely Friendly. Golden Retriever-Ass Pure.#Infuriating. Hilarious.#anyway I looked at anime clips to make sure I remembered things right and that was a mistake#as someone who has a soft spot for it and grew up on it -- compared to the manga it's bad and it's always been bad#and toriyama was right to be disinterested in watching it jesus christ they BUTCHERED his work#anyway this has been another shot of haterade with sketches thank you for scrolling my rambletags askljdask#dbtag#i just truly can't get over how they make Vegeta call her 'woman' in the anime and he literally only ever calls her Bulma in the manga#except for on namek when he refers to her as 'the/that woman' because she is a complete stranger#why is he calling her woman like he's a 1940s american husband and not an extraterrestrial from a deeply advanced society toei

Can I vent a wee bit?
Texas is ridiculous with taking care of anything. Theres this gorgeous white husky outside and he seems to be in pain but hes so sweet. Literally a gentle giant. I called the city and they said they could come within 5 days, it's now 6. We called a Husky rescue and they're full. So is our humane society and another rescue.
This is how Texas is with most things especially it's people and God forbid you identify as a female and or LGBTQ. My city is pretty liberal but because we depend on the state for certain thinks like healthcare people fall through the cracks because either they dont have the resources available or they dont care.
As someone with mental health issues who takes medication it takes forever to get anything done. My roommate was denied a therapist because of an "error" and it took her a month to get it sorted because they gave her the run around.
These societies and the state see us as a number but we're people. We need help. This puppy outside has no idea what's going on and cant Advocate for himself but hes being failed constantly.
It just makes me angry. I think it's a trigger for me because as a child no one helped me while I was being abused. CPS and police officers in Texas did nothing. I dont like seeing people and animals struggle when a bit of empathy from the people who are supposed to be helping us could go a long way.
#thank you for coming to my ted talk#im so frustrated#it doesnt take much to help yet the system refuses to#its ridiculous#angry sigh
