Now enquiring minds might be asking “So how did Shaw end up with a Violant hand?” and to answer that question I have to paint a bit of a word picture. His memory of his childhood (before the age of about 11~) is incredibly blurry due to several traumatic events some of which he still doesn’t fully remember that occurred pretty much back to back, and that’s probably one of the things Shaw feels most ashamed of. Before coming to the Neath, especially after his daughter’s death, he had lapses of memory, losing hours to grief. During his first (of many) stays in the Beth, in the state he was in, Shaw couldn’t remember the fact that his daughter was dead. And then the Missing Month happens. And then he realizes that one of his partners forgot their first adventure together and the night that made Shaw fall in love with him trying to purge trauma from his mind, And then he realizes that another of his partners categorically isn’t real. And then a third, separate partner forgets how to pronounce their first language accurately after a workplace accident.

All this has led to Shaw feeling like he has to remember the people he loves. He has to. He collects mementos and stories in a manner that’s bordering on compulsive - if he has something of someone, he’ll remember them. Rereading letters sent by loved ones and holding the gifts they send him is as much a romantic gesture as it is a soothing behavior. He has to keep the memory of the people he loves alive. Then they’ve never really left him, even if the worst happens.

…Then you have to remember that this guy got into the Removing Memories profession in order to try to 1v1 the colonization of Sub-Saharan Africa.

So what is he going to do about the existential threat that he could forget everything that matters to him in an instant? Well, Shaw decided to write it down. Everything. The story of how he fell in love so many times. The birth of his two kids. His best friends’ favorite pastries. Every detail and every story. His heart scribed in violant ink. …So much violant ink, more than anyone should be safely handling. By the time his work was done (and his partners stopped him from dying this way), he’d stained his entire writing hand not-scarlet, and the sensation of the weight of the pen being burnt into his nerves was agonizing.

But he did get what he wanted.

He’ll never forget.

I never talk about the fantasy au because it's just a mashup of pseudo formed storylines and aesthetic pictures in my head but you know the classic "enchanted knight sleeping amongst flowers" trope? well it's exactly what happens to the Red Knight at one point

It would be so easy for Hiram to let go of everything and just lose himself in a dream of a dream of his memories, but he has people to meet, things to do, thrills to seek, and plots to scheme. He really thinks about it though, when the violant isn't enough to keep his soulless ennui at bay.

Captain Casey's train is commonly described as 'black'. Eyewitnesses however, agree that this is a grave understatement, and that a more apt description would be 'a void punched into the sky in the shape of a train, through which sigils blaze'. But that's a bit of mouthful isn't it?

Twitch gets charged for identity theft and then no one can agree if it really counts or if they are a new person now

new ES where you end up as some weird pirate's lawyer trying to vouch for them in the strangest case of identity theft ever seen in the neath (they're accused of stealing at least 25 identities and at least 1 body)

it's 200 actions long and 175 of those actions are twitch talking. there's no way to win the case. somehow it ends with you, the lawyer, as the one in jail while your client walks away unscathed

ok. mystery that has eluded me forever RE twitch's eyes:

would gant eyes be more or less susceptible to neathbow effects?

gant is the absence of light & colours so maybe neathbow colours would just barely affect them? they just kinda disappear in there? but then again if gant absorbs all other colours. would they be More effective?? i have never figured this out. help me

,,,,didn't realise til right now that the characters i latched onto when i first played ssea was an ambiguously gendered red honey focused character, & your first officer who ate a guy and is haunted by the guilt. maybe seeing some themes here

newcomer to the neath having a very excited conversation with the cage keepers about wow! they let you be whatever you want down here? this place is great, i'm totally gonna stay!!!! but they have to yell really loud to be heard over the screaming that nobody is acknowledging

with twitch as they are now it's kinda funny that one of the first things that Really made me invest in flondon was meeting isery in ssea, and reading them described as "sharp and glittery and ambiguously gendered" just made me go oh woah nonbinary rep!!! :D

and i entirely ignored the whole red honey thing. that's second in command of the entire isle of cats but i was too busy going wow! we got gender down here! to notice all the horrors or whatever. that's not important rn
