Yeah let's not do this for 3 months people. He's not leaving! We're at the beginning of Buddie!!!

Q. I'm so confused by all the excitement, and I admit that I struggle with facial awareness, but all we got was Eddie saying he's leaving so that feels way more like a Ryan exit than a beginning to Buddie. What did I miss?

A. Okay I'm going to say this once, and only once. We are not spending 3 months on a nonstarter spiral. Ryan is not leaving. It's not an exit story. It's the beginning of a feelings realization story, only Eddie hasn't quite arrived at the starting point for his part yet. Lots of people struggle with facial cues, anon, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not an exit storyline. It's drama set up to kick start Buck's spiral and to bring Christopher home. That's why I loved that they had Buck on the couch and Eddie in the kitchen. The couch has kind of always been used to symbolize a romantic relationship between Buck and Eddie, both of them being home when they're on that couch, so putting Buck on the couch in that scene basically puts Buck in position. Buck has arrived at the start of his realization arc. The box has been opened (the box being his long unexamined feelings for Eddie) and he won't be able to put the lid back on it this time. The moment we see Buck have at the end of the episode was not his 'oh Eddie's my person' moment but it was the start of Buck's journey to that realization. Buck was devastated in that moment, but for the sake of Eddie, he attempted to fake enthusiasm. Eddie being happy means more to Buck than his fear of being left behind, again. But that fear will come out when the season returns in March. Tim basically confirmed that Buck will spiral and he will throw himself into a distraction to try and block his pain. That distraction will inevitably fail, as Tim also already spoiled (they learned their Tommy lesson and they won't be repeating it), and that will force Buck to once and for all have to confront and figure out why the thought of losing Eddie sends him spiraling. The end of the episode was the beginning of Buck's journey.

Eddie hasn't reached his starting point, yet. But having him in the kitchen, the other big Buddie room, was a way to show that he is close. Framing the shot the way they did, Eddie having a straight line of sight to Buck on the couch, was intentional. Eddie is close but he's not there yet. He's distracted by the whole Christopher thing, as he should be. Eddie won't be able to arrive at his starting point until he gets the Christopher situation settled. That entire scene was LOUD. Buck letting himself in using his key. Eddie not being able to look at Buck when talking about moving. The flirty way Buck asked what he was watching on the iPad, fully believing it was porn. And again the way the entire scene was framed and shot. The close up of Eddie's face when he realizes he's not alone in this moment and that he does have someone in his corner. Then the close up of Buck's face when he allows the mask of enthusiasm to slip and we see the real sadness that he is feeling. It was very clearly the beginning of their storyline. It was in no way shaped, framed or written as the beginning of an exit storyline. It's happening, anon. Let yourself enjoy the build up 💗

He would be lying if he said having you so close to him, practically sitting on his lap, while moaning a myriad of ‘oh my God’, ‘please, God’ and, his personal favourite, ‘Dia, Dia, Dia…!’ wasn’t affecting him in the slightest. It was, and heavily; he just wished it took place under different circumstances.

Mainly because he was low-key freaking out too, although not as much as you.

Having seen a fair number of sinners, he knew some mortal minds weren’t simple or kind, which made the darkness of life and the suffering of others a rather pleasurable affair for them. It was fascinating, apparently, a broadly studied aspect of human society, and not just one of many media genres, that propelled the pharmaceutical and therapeutic intervention businesses; a cause and a consequence, something that should’ve been avoided or couldn’t have been helped.

And yet, out of all horrors, you chose a demonic possession movie? Were you trying to tease him?

Paimon wasn’t even that bad once you got the chance to meet him properly! He was an erudite whose knowledge covered all the arts, philosophy and science. A friend of Lucifer’s, keen on reciprocity foremost and eager to start a conversation with anyone who offered him the same amount of time and interest as he did. Unfortunately, Diavolo had the tiny suspicion you wouldn’t be in the mood to meet the captivating demon, nor his demanding dromedary, after watching the disturbing movie, but you should really give it a try!

He could still understand you, though.

“Oh, dear” he said in a quiet breath as the boy on the screen slowly turned around and miraculously missed his mother crawling on the walls.

Your eyes, which had been previously peeking between your fingers, closed shut. You turned to press your face against his chest again and he deeply hoped your fear kept you from noticing the rapid beating of his heart and the way his hand closed around your waist to bring you closer. His cheeks burned, not bothering to hide an enamoured smile. There was no use in doing so when you were trying so hard to disappear from the world amongst the creases of his uniform.

Still, you had asked him to watch the film together and he would be more than damned if he disappointed you in such a trivial matter, so he forced himself to look at the screen intensely, even when a naked man loomed from the shadows and the boy had to run away for his life, tripping and falling and barely climbing to the attic on time.

“I have to say, MC” he mustered, eyes open wide as the woman (Annie?) violently banged her head against the trap door while Peter cried in desperation from the other side. “I can’t understand the appeal of watching this. When you said you wanted a movie night, I thought you’d choose something… tamer”

More romantic is what he wanted to say. Diavolo had hoped to understand love from a human standpoint and see what you liked in order to do the same. Rose petals and champagne by the fireplace? Or shopping and dining in the most expensive places in the Devildom? Dancing in the rain? Stargazing? As observant as he was, he had no clue whether you reciprocated his infatuation, so, sadly, he preferred having your full attention on him whenever he showed his feelings; and at that moment not even an emergency would’ve made you let go of his embrace. It's not like he would ever complain about that, anyway.

“I didn’t want to watch the movie alone” you finally whimpered, letting go only enough to look up at him. “And I figured if someone could make me feel protected it would be you”

Your glassy eyes vaguely reflected his speechless expression and, suddenly, he was aware of everything. The weight of your body against his, bringing warmth and comfort, the smell of your clothes and the softness of your skin; your scared pouting and embarrassed blushing. Not knowing what to do with it anymore, he let his free hand awkwardly drop over your calves and immediately almost imploded when you instinctively tucked even closer.

There was no noise for a blissful moment, save for the heavy breathing and the buzzing coming from the speakers, and Diavolo briefly asked himself if a horror movie was still a good background for a love confession.

Then, a wet sound; a sawing motion.

You slowly turned to the gigantic TV, impending doom in your expression quickly morphing into heavy distress when the mother appeared once more on the screen. Your appalled scream almost made him cover his ears before you hid your face in his chest one final time.

“OH MY GOD, DIA, OH MY GOD”

Diavolo just hoped Barbatos wouldn’t ask any questions in the morning.

Thinking back to episode 1, where Agatha/Agnes clearly remembers losing Nicky (e.g. the bedroom scene), but doesn't remember why she hates Rio - even though those two things are so intertwined. Why do you think that is?

Hi Anon, thank you for the ask, and for the interesting observation + question!

I can think of 2 possible (Watsonian) reasons why Agent Rio Vidal isn't connected to Detective Agnes' lost son within the spell — and both can be true at the same time:

Rio popping up was unexpected and the spell — already distorted and stretched as it was — simply didn't have time or the juice to adapt this new character into its current storyline and setting.

It's possible that if things dragged on the spell could have made Agent Vidal somehow responsible for spell!Nicky's demise: What a delicious plot development that'd be for our small-town murder mystery prestige crime genre show!

Agatha does't want to remember why she hates Rio, as evidenced by Rio's follow-up comment: "You're only lying to yourself."

We know that the spell is being influenced by Agatha and what she believes about herself ("Is this really how you see yourself?").

E.g. Detective Agnes reflects how Agatha sees herself as a skilled investigator but also her belief and interest in the darker sides of human nature. Agnes' sad social life also reflects Agatha's own loneliness ("a lady cop cannot be good at her job and have a healthy personal life at the same time").

But I think the spell is also influenced by what Agatha wants to believe. Agnes here, as abrasive as she is, is still part of the community. People turn to her as a trusted expert. She's not shunned or hated the same way Agatha is.

And while Agatha has accepted that Nicky's dead and gone, she's struggling with the need to assign blame or reason for it. She ends up blaming Rio and herself.

And I think on the subconscious level that the spell pulls from, Agatha simply doesn't want to blame Rio.

She still has love and all these feelings for Rio but instead of dealing with what happened with Nicky — with how sometimes death and loss just happens beyond one's control no matter how much we love or how deserved it is — she prefers to run, to lie to herself (she's such a good liar).

It's this same reason why in episode 4, despite all evidence and reason pointing out that Billy isn't Nicky, Agatha embraces Rio and tries to kiss her. Don't get me wrong, Rio's truthful campfire confession definitely played a part too, but I think Agatha's an awfully good liar.

what do you think of lilia and jen as a relationship?

I love getting asks so much--thank you, anon!--but I fear my answers may become a little repetitive. I like Lilia and Jen! Again, I think AAA is such a strong ensemble show that you can put any combination of characters together and make something fun. (Fun fact: I was actually considering doing this, a la Poetry's Geometry in Six Dimensions for Animorphs, and then I was like, "But don't you have a real life? And also a challenge from February that you haven't finished? And also a fic for the Yuletide exchange that you've barely started?")

For Lilia and Jen specifically: I think that their platonic relationship in the show was really solid, efficient storytelling, and I'm happy with where they left it. If I were writing for them, there's something there about the two of them being sources of wisdom (Jen as a midwife and root worker, Lilia as the eldest witch in the coven) that would be interesting to explore. Jen as healer vs. Lilia's past experiences with fever would be cool to expand on, too. And the two of them being the scammers of the group (barring Agatha, who is of course in a league of her own.)

Romantically--eh? It doesn't immediately jump out at me (now Rio and Lilia, there you go--Lilia with her vampire lovers and constant fleeing from Death would be very interesting to see with Rio). But, I mean, that's what writing is for! If I wanted to, I bet I could make it work, and then I'd be convinced.

The best way I can describe the way I love Alicent Hightower is that I think she is an incredibly well-rendered and sympathetic character who's life is so so utterly terrible in a way that I find so interesting. Like, re: HOTD, I couldn't care less if anyone is right or wrong--it's a civil war between a bunch of really awful royals and nobility. "Right" is not a thing I think or care about. Now INTERESTING--that is something that matters, and Team Green in general just ended up being SO interesting, probably because they're wildly fucked up. Alicent is flawed and messy and sympathetic even when she's making the "wrong" choices. Also, I think I've made a post before where I said that "guilt is the sexiest emotion in fiction" and that definitely plays a role in my attachment to Alicent. Loml, honestly. In the words of my best friend Who Gets It "God, please take all of her suffering and give it Daemon" LMFAO

top five upcoming bl shows that you're excited for?

OH THIS IS SUCH AN INTERESTING QUESTION!!!!! let's see....

1. last twilight. JIMMYSEA + P’AOF + A STORY ABOUT A DISABLED CHARACTER DO I NEED TO SAY MORE. i mean i could and i would but you don’t want me to go down that rabbit hole, trust me. even pushing my own personal bias to the side, this looks like it's gonna be a mature story with fantastic direction and cinematography, and if done right it could also give a very powerful message about disability, so i have insanely high hopes for it and im gonna be SO ANNOYING when the show finally airs (yes even more than i already am).

2. wish you luck. im not sure we’re actually getting this in 2023 or at all tbh, but god knows i desperately need it because 1) tonnam FINALLY as the main character in a BL, it’s what my boy deserves so please make it happen, and 2) [CHANTS] SCI-FI BL SCI-FI BL SCI-FI BL!!!!!! i enjoy it immensely when BLs try to get plotty and ambitious and innovative, and the trailer seems to have a pretty good production and fantastic cinematography. it honestly has so much potential AND I WANT IT SO BADLY.

(and just to confuse the hell out of everyone....)

3. wish me luck. this looks like a very classic office romance and i do personally tend to enjoy those, but the real reason why im more excited for this one compared to all the other office BLs we’re getting this year (a boss and a babe, cherry magic thai, step by step, etc.) is that i ADORE both fiat and na and i can’t wait to see them together as the main characters in a BL. in the category of office romance it's also the trailer that convinced me the most out of all of them, like the vibes are just [chef's kiss] immaculate. ALSO MORE TONNAM.

4. dangerous romance. to be fair i could have honestly put any other gmmtv BL here because im very excited for all of them, however after seeing perth and chimon in never let me go my interest in this one has skyrocketed, which is very surprising to me considering it's an highschool BL, but this is what great actors with great chemistry can do to a woman. the plot isn't particularly groundbreaking but at the same time the trailer is really compelling and i like that the show will probably deal with more serious topics, so im very much here for it.

5. the next prince. to be completely honest im not that big of a fan of zeenunew (or dumundi in general actually), however this show looks like all my teenage dreams coming true and unfortunately i am very weak for it. i grew up with movies like ‘princess diaries’, ‘the prince and me’, ‘what a girl wants’, and so many other hallmark christmas movies about modern royalty, all the while wishing there could be a queer alternative for those, which in the years also made me read all the possible royalty AU fics i could find for my ships. so not only domundi is playing with all my hopes and dreams, but they also gave me fencing and ballroom dancing and love vs duty. this is most likely going to be pushed to 2024 and im not sure domundi will be able to actually deliver (at least plot-wise), but despite my better judgement i am embarassingly excited for this one.

I totally understand the need to have a mental visual. Even if it's just a basic concept. I'm the same way since I visualize my stories in my head as though they were a movie (or in this case, an anime lol).
