OH MYY DAYS.
I can't believe I've found an x Data and it's SO GOOD afgehdifkrp
The way the writing flows so eloquently and how Data's entire character is captured to the T 😩😩♥️
Not to mention that make out session was so HOT.
I love it here. I love this series.
First Base (Data x Female Reader)
Mechanical Rose Series: Part 1
Mechanical Rose Series: Part 2: Android Mine
Mechanical Rose Series: Part 3: Exobiology
Mechanical Rose Series: Part 4: Make Us Stronger
Mechanical Rose Series: Part 5: Mother Knows Best
Mechanical Rose Series Prequel One-shot: Crush
Summary: Data is curious about whether you’d like to join him in exploring what humans call “making out.”
Rating: T
A/N: The poem Data is reading at the beginning of the story is “How Do I Love Thee?” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
Also posted on AO3 ———————————————————————-
“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.”
Data’s voice is pure honey – honey and silk. His voice is always soft, but you didn’t know it could be so absolutely sensuous. You close your eyes and feel that luxuriously velvet timbre of his voice all around you.
The two of you are in his quarters, sitting side-by-side on his couch as he reads you love poems that he has downloaded to his databanks just for you. There are poems from every era and planet: Human, Vulcan, Klingon, Betazoid, and other cultures you haven’t even heard of before. You marvel at the universality of this experience of love, this experience that you are sharing now with the handsome android beside you.
Spot is curled up contentedly in your lap, a rumbling ball of fur pressed against your stomach that you absently stroke with one hand. Your head rests on Data’s shoulder, the fabric of his uniform soft under your cheek. One of his arms encircles your shoulders, while the fingers of his other hand are twined casually yet intimately with yours.
At first, Data’s attempts to romance you were stilted and awkward (though still adorable) based on a saved template for a romantic subroutine from a previous relationship. It took several insistent reassurances from you that you didn’t want a Casanova or a Romeo, that you just wanted him, just wanted Data, before he started adjusting the subroutine so that it didn’t drown out his true personality, but merely enhanced his already romantic qualities.
“I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.”
You snuggle closer against him, your body warm and relaxed. Data’s body is warm too, pleasantly so, and your form melts against his like butter.
You can hardly believe it was only four days ago that Data showed up unexpectedly at your quarters, carrying a bouquet of Andorian sweet roses and inquiring whether you would like to attend that evening’s string quartet concert in Ten Forward with him “in an exploratory trial to assess our romantic compatibility.”
Of course, you said yes.
You’d had a little bit of a crush on him for months at that point, but it came to a head last week when he’d found you crying alone in Ten Forward and invited you over to his quarters to pet Spot, because he’d read that holding a purring cat had therapeutic and comforting properties for humans. You’d always found him physically attractive, but that was when you first realized what a gentle, sweet, and caring, even loving, man he also was.

Hit and Fade
“Hmm…”
Ton Lee Sama looked through her electrobinoculars, focusing them in a little, then nodded to herself.
There was no mistaking it. That was a Star Destroyer, in high orbit over Cabarria, along with a pair of smaller escort ships.
There wasn’t any news on the HoloNet that suggested there was going to be a crackdown, or anything like that… which was fortunate… but Ton Lee wasn’t a Rebel, anyway.
She didn’t do that kind of thing.
Instead, she went back inside, then picked up a comm system.
Ton Lee didn’t take part in any forbidden activities. She just watched the sky, and told others what she could see.
“Someone please tell me the caff machine is fixed,” Commander Harkon requested, entering the bridge.
“It’s been fixed for two watches,” Lt. Dax informed him.
“Thank goodness,” Harkon muttered. “All right – I have the conn.”
“You have the conn, sir,” one of the other officers said.
“Now tell me if anything’s wrong,” Harkon added. “And someone get me some caff.”
A rating went to go and fetch the commander’s coffee, and the woman who’d been watch-standing before him shook her head.
“Nothing of any significance,” she replied. “We’re in medium orbit, same as before.”
“Good, good,” Harkon said, hands clasped behind his back, and looked out the window. “I see there’s a patrol out.”
“Of course, Sir,” the woman told him. “Regulations.”
“Quite,” Harkon agreed. “Quite.”
He accepted his cup of caff from the rating, nodding his thanks, and took a sip.
Then another.
“This actually tastes slightly better,” he said. “That or I’ve had so long without a caff machine that I didn’t realize quite how much I was missing it.”
That got a few desultory chuckles, and Harkon paced around the bridge for another minute or so, sipping his drink occasionally.
“Lieutenant,” he said, looking down at Dax. “Your assessment is tomorrow, correct?”
“Yes, sir,” Dax agreed. “I’m nervous.”
“As you should be, it’s an important moment,” the higher-ranked officer said. “But you’re quite competent enough to advance – you just need to make sure that the Captain sees that.”
Dax nodded, thinking about that, and the background murmur of operations of the ISD Galaxion flowed back and forth around them.
Then a raised voice cut the calm.
“Sir!” someone in the bridge pit said. “Enemy fighters!”
“Where?” Harkon demanded, practically dropping his half-empty cup as he looked around for clarification. The alert sirens began to wail, and one of the nearby displays flashed.
“Behind us!” the rating answered. “Patrol is vectoring-”
“What kind of fighters, I need data-”
“Prepare the ready squadron for launch-”
The quiet calm of an evening shift turned into focused cacophony, men and women struggling to do their jobs in a way that had suddenly become urgent, then Harkon saw two three-flights of X-wings slash past either side of the bridge. One of them was just finishing the job of picking apart a two-flight of TIE fighters from the combat space patrol, then they corkscrewed and turned towards another element of the patrol.
Defensive laser turrets began to open up, a few at a time as the systems came online from crews dashing through abbreviated start up sequences, and Harkon’s head swung back and forth as he tried to keep track of everything.
“Someone wake the captain!” he snapped. “Tell Outrage and Kismet to move in closer! We need their guns-”
The whole of the Galaxion shook, and electrical discharges snapped and crackled around the nearest consoles. One of them exploded, sending the rating operating it sprawling, and someone shouted for a corpsman.
Harkon tried to ignore it, but a moment later lights began to shut down and the defensive gunfire stopped.
“Report!” he shouted, spotting half a dozen Y-wings banking around with their turrets flaring – a single skilled TIE pilot trying to interfere with their bombing run, but ion cannon bolts disabled the fighter and a moment later an X-wing downed it in a shower of sparks.
“Ion bombs, sir!” Dax reported, from his post in the engineering section. “At least a dozen, we don’t have the exact numbers – the reactor’s gone into shutdown, I don’t know when we’ll get it restarted!”
Half a dozen other conversations were going on, shouted reports about what little information they had with the whole of the Galaxion running on emergency power only, and Harkon winced as an X-wing flew right past the bridge.
“Lieutenant Dax,” he said. “Personal comlinks should still work – get me a report from engineering!”
“Yes, sir!” Dax replied, then listened to a comlink for a moment.
Harkon made himself wait, looking out the armoured bridge windows as he watched the fighting. One of the X-wing flights seemed to be focused on the hull guns of the Galaxion, clearing away turrets while they were unpowered and the shields were down, but the Y-wings were going for their escorting Acclamators – and there were X-wings following them.
How had they… the strike must have been made with some kind of interim rendezvous. With current enough data you could jump in close to a target point…
“Sir!” Dax called, getting his attention. “Commander Keres in engineering says he’s going to try a hot restart. If he can catch it before it’s fully cold then we’ll have power in less than two minutes – otherwise it’ll show him where the damage is!”
“Tell him to be as quick as possible,” Harkon said, then there was a crackle from his own comlink.
He snatched it up to his ear. “Bridge here.”
“Bridge, this is the flight deck,” Commander Perrin reported. “We’re trying to get our fighters in space, there’s problems with the handling gear and the armoured hatch is locked in place. Permission to deal with that problem?”
Harkon froze, thinking hard.
The flight deck hatch was armoured for a reason.
“Can’t you launch through the landing bay?” he asked.
“Transfer from landing to launch and vice versa is by an automated system, and I’m using all the emergency power I have to start up TIE engines!” Perrin said. “Do you want fighters in space ASAP or not?”
“Be ready for it, but don’t do it just yet,” Harkon said. “Reactor restart is going to be attempted-”
The Galaxion shook slightly.
“Engine flare and shutdown!” Dax called. “Commander Keres says there’s serious ion scarring on the control lines – we won’t get the main reactor back until that’s sorted!”
Harkon winced.
“Do it, Perrin,” he said.
“That’s all I needed, bridge,” Perrin replied, then the line went dead.
Scowling, Harkon looked out the window again, seeing laser blasts and explosions going on around the Outrage. Several TIEs exploded as he watched, shield scatter blazing off the Rebel fighters, then at least one shielded Rebel snubfighter went down as well – but a moment later there was a much brighter explosion, as Outrage exploded from a sequenced barrage of at least a dozen torpedoes.
At least it looked like Kismet was cycling her hangar launches quickly, as there was now a second flight of TIEs coming out of the hangar. That was probably it for how many fighters he was going to get.
“TIEs launched!” someone called, then their tone changed. “Enemy space patrol around the ventral side of the ship – they’re being shot down as they come out!”
“What in blazes is going on?” Captain Jered demanded, striding onto the bridge.
Harkon turned, ready to answer, then someone shouted.
“TORPEDOES-”
The whole of the Galaxion heaved upwards, like she’d just been hit by an asteroid, and everyone on the bridge who wasn’t already seated ended up sprawling.
“Report!” Captain Jered said, picking himself up from the floor. “Torpedoes where?”
“Ventral side, X-wings,” someone said, sounding shaken. “I don’t have any reports from the flight deck…”
“Engineering reports serious damage to the spaceframe, sir,” Dax added. “I think…”
“Continue, lieutenant,” Harkon instructed him.
“I think their torpedoes blew the bomber magazine,” Dax said. “If that’s happened… the spaceframe is a wreck. Commander Keres says the frame shift has warped the reactor as well – he doesn’t think he can fire it up at all.”
The engineer swallowed, suddenly sounding very young. “Atmospheric integrity is compromised across most of the ship, the blast doors won’t seal.”
“Damn,” Jered said, very softly.
He was silent for perhaps ten seconds, watching out the window as the Rebel starfighters downed the last few TIEs in the battlespace. Kismet was gone, Harkon noticed – destroyed while he’d been focused elsewhere – and the Rebel starfighters recohered into three-flights and then squadrons, before vanishing in a flare of pseudovelocity as they jumped to hyperspace.
“There’s nothing for it,” he said. “Abandon ship. And make sure to preserve the data recorders… we’ll need them for the court-martial.”

This is for pure amusement (sprung off a prompt). I'm attached to the idea Scott and Marion share custody of Guard Cameron AND harbor a Shakespearean comedic potential. Jeff Tracy gets to be a keen Commander and a cunning father. Col. Casey is not amused. There's a passing reference to BEFORE THE DARK.
Many thanks to @janetm74 for incessant support!
FROM A CERTAIN POINT OF VEIW
"Is.... is somebody there?... Hello?"
The kid's face was nearly drained of color and obviously scared. And oh so young! How early did the GDF enroll now?
The call came through directly to the island via a secure channel and Jeff switched the comm automatically, while engrossed in the backlog of reports at the desk.
"Hello! Mr Tr... Is Mr Tracy there?"
The connection was patchy. Jeff thought he could discern giant pine trees and snow in the background.
"It is I, son. Mr. Tracy. You called International Rescue - how can I help you?"
If at all possible, the boy's eyes grew wider and more anxious.
"N-no! Sc... Is Mr. Scott Tracy there?!"
"Cameron!?! What happened?!"
His eldest stepped back into the lounge, voice ringing with concern. Brown eyes lit up as the GDF kid saw a face he recognized.
"Scott! I mean... Mr. Tracy! I'm... not supposed to be calling you, but Lt. Van Arkle went dark and I..."
"Where are you!?! Sit-rep, soldier!"
Scott was already pulling the lamp handles of his chute down. A structured military address seemed to have pulled the boy on the other end of the call together a bit.
"Siberia, sir! Abandoned nuclear missile silos. Lt. Van Arkle went in to investigate a possible warheads sell-off. She gave orders not to call backup. I didn't know what else to do!"
"You did good, Cameron! I'm on my way! John, upload the coordinates to One!"
Scott was giving clipped orders already from the depths of the launch tube. A befuddled Jeff didn't have the time to wedge a word in sideways as One roared off from the pool and the connection to the hapless GDF soldier got cut off.
***
The rest of the impromptu rescue for Jeff was a jumble of thick worry and palpable annoyance of his sons, incomplete bits and bobs of data, grainy visual feeds from dark bowels of the missile launch labyrinth and a snowed in taiga, in the middle of what looked like a mayhem of a breakneck chase, flashes of shots fired, and at least on one occasion - a fistfight.
Next time he heard his eldest son's voice properly was from the elevator up from the hangars, once One completed the post flight checks. The strong, clear notes were vibrating with what Jeff was rather surprised to identify as distress, liberally overlaid with fury. The sentiment also came in stereo, fully echoed by an unfamiliar female voice:
"YOU COULD HAVE DIED!!!!!"
***
The remarkable cavalcade that subsequently entered the lounge area of the villa consisted of a visibly fuming Scott, his radiation grade uniform covered in muck and scorched areas grazed by laser fire, a young woman, carried in his arms, her GDF uniform in a similar state of dissaray, one boot off, replaced by a velcro sprain brace, and, peeking from behind them, a shy youth Jeff now recognized as Cameron, even paler than before and exuding profound misery. Scott marched to the couches and all but dumped his equally seething cargo on the cushions. Blue eyes were ablaze.
Virgil's move to offer a med scan and help was stopped on its tracks by the sizzle of silent daggers and lightning bolts exchanged between his brother and the Leutenant. In helpless confusion he turnied to Jeff, who was by then thoroughly amused by the whole pantomime. Scott eventually huffed and threw his arms up:
"Dad, meet Lt. Van Arkle, who thinks she could singlehandedly take down the Russian black market for nuclear weapons WITHOUT BACKUP!
"I HAD IT UNDER CONTROL!"
An attempt to jump off the couch was expertly stopped by a pillow, shoved under the injured foot, and an extra bright cerulean glare. Poor young Cameron, temporarily forgotten by all parties involved, was obviously trying to process the immediate proximity of THE Jeff Tracy in the flesh without hyperventilating too conspicuously.
Jeff did his best to stifle a laugh.
"Well, well... I do believe we've met, Leutenant! Albeit the last time around you tried to kill my son with a pool noodle."
The retort died out on the young officer's lips, as John's hologram in the center of the lounge enunciated a mumble maybe too intentionally:
"That certainly became a habit..."
Perplexed, Jeff was still quick to pave over the awkward pause.
"How's old Willem Van Arkle doing, Marion?"
The indignant stare up at Scott's full imposing height was momentarily deflated.
"Um... my father died... sir. After the mines were shut down he just... gave up..."
It was his turn to choke on the foot in his mouth. Blue eyes searched his gaze - free of ire and brimming with protective compassion. That definitely tumbled into a hole he didn't anticipate.
"I'm so very sorry for your loss!"
He meant it, of course. But Jeff Tracy also prided himself for nothing else if not quick thinking on the go.
"Now, kids, you need to get your reports straight for the GDF. Scott, do show the Leutenant up to the guestrooms at the Roundhouse. I insist you cross-reference your stories before the official debrief. Boys, would you show Cameron around the island? How do you like the pool, son?"
A half-nod from Dad was enough for Gordon to get the cue and drag Cameron and Alan out to the poolside. There was soon laughter and splashes and, possibly, a watergun fight. Jeff turned a pointed gaze at Scott, still towering over a notably subdued Marion on the couch.
"I suggest you get to it, Bluejay. You two don't have all day! We shall show our guests some patented Tracy hospitality, right? I'll let you know when dinner's ready."
Scott might have stifled an eyeroll, as he bent down to pick Marion up again and head for the elevator. Virgil jerked to the hidden closet, eager to offer the hoverchair or crutches Jeff himself had to use until recently, struggling against muscle atrophy. Dad's firm hand landed on the boy's shoulder and stalled the move with a squeeze.
At least there was no struggle or squabble that time around. Not till the elevator doors hissed shut, anyway. The whir of well-calibrated machinery was soon muted by overlapping shouts:
"YOU COULD HAVE DIED!!!!!"
Big, apprehensive brown eyes searched Jeff's face, full of doubt.
"Are you sure about that, Dad? They're gonna kill each other!"
"That's one way of looking at it, son."
The twinkle in his eyes was full of mischief.
***
Colonel Casey squinted at him, the hologram blue adding to the scorn. The dinner came and went and the lounge was, blissfully, quiet. The Tinies dragged Cameron down to the beach. John checked out to go over Scott's helmet camera footage - whatever was legible through heavy interference. MAX was sent up to the Roundhouse with a dinner platter once it was obvious the reports review took longer than expected. Or, maybe, precisely as long as expected. Gordon might have suggested to contract EOS for proof of life, which got poor impressionable Cameron to choke on a charred burrito.
"Is IR going rogue or are you trying to poach the GDF best and brightest to expand?"
The old friend's holo was burning a hole in his chest and Jeff felt himself smile into the sip of scotch. That was certainly one way of looking at it.

Hi!
For the prompt requests...I'm thinking "I'm sorry, I had to" with Hound maybe 👀 or Cody as an alternative ❤️
hello roz my dear. thank you for this prompt!! I wanted desperately to write for Hound for this, but Cody came in and said "nope, this one's mine" so here we are. hope you enjoy!
First Kiss - Cody
Summary: You're injured. Cody can't risk losing you without telling you how he feels.
Warnings: canon-typical violence, angst, fluff, confessions
Word Count: 1k
dividers by: me, @saradika, and @dystopicjumpsuit in that order <3
As a starship technician, you don’t often travel to the frontlines. You support your boys in yellow from the Negotiator, repairing the clones’ gunships, the Jedis’ hyperdrive rings, and other engineering tasks that sometimes fall through the cracks. While you’d technically been combat trained when you enlisted with the GAR, that had been ages ago. You’ve never had a need to brush up on your skills. In effect, the GAR viewed you as a civilian engineer, not as a soldier, and so didn’t feel the need to press your training.
Maybe they should have.
Because while you don’t go to the frontlines, today the frontline has come to you.
Explosions rock the Negotiator. Tremors rumble up through the durasteel floor into your body, already panicked as it is, as you pelt full-tilt down a side corridor. Your blaster is clutched in sweaty palms. You need to reach the hangar bay. You’ve been working on some modifications to the gunships to make them quieter, stealthier, more efficient—if that data is destroyed or, even worse, stolen, several months of your work goes down the drain. You may even be fired if the Separatists use the data against the clone army.
But in reality, that’s not what you’re worried about. No, you’re worried about Cody. You know him; he’s out there at the front right now, leading his men by example. It’s part of the reason you fell for him in the first place. He cares for his men—and in the end, that depth of emotion may be his downfall. Kark, you should have told him how you feel.
You sprint past dozens of troopers running in the opposite direction. As you near the hangar, one of the men stops you, yanking you to a halt.
“Hangar’s compromised!” he shouts over the blaring klaxon. “Come with us! Commander’s orders!”
That gives you pause. Meeting the helmeted gaze of the trooper with wide eyes, you flounder for a moment. Another explosion shakes the ship. You stumble, the trooper’s grasp the only thing keeping you upright.
“Where’s the Commander?” you shout.
His hesitation tells you all you need to know. Pulling yourself out of the trooper’s grip, you continue on your mad dash to the hangar, its state of damage be damned. Thankfully, none of the rest of the men stop you, and at last, you reach the hangar entrance.
The entire space is engulfed in an inferno. Heat snarls at you as the door opens, before the metal screeches to a halt halfway, jammed. Taking a deep breath of fresh air, you step over the threshold.
You practically live in this hangar. You know exactly where your workstation is, how to get to it, where everything is within your toolbox. This is a space you could walk through in your sleep—yet as you squint against the sting of smoke and dodge flames that seem to leap at you, panic begins to build in your chest in earnest. Because Cody is somewhere in all this carnage, too. You can’t save both your work and your commander.
You couldn’t live with yourself if you let him die.
Your lungs scream for air. With a terrified whimper, you gulp in a deep lungful. Immediately you begin to cough, the smoke burning into your body. Turning in a circle, you attempt to squint through the smoke. The heat grows by the minute and becomes increasingly oppressive. Your knees feel weak. But still you stagger forward. Blind and lost, you cry with a cracked voice for Cody.
You trip. Knees crack against the floor. Hacking, you peer through the smoke with watering eyes. Is that a person coming toward you?
As your vision goes dark, the last thing you see is a pair of hands reaching for you and a familiar golden visor.
When you wake, you’re in the medbay. You can tell before you even open your eyes, just based on the sterile scent of antiseptic tickling your nose, and the hushed, rhythmic beeping of several medical devices.
Eyes fluttering open, you squint against the bright white light reflecting off equally bright white walls. It hurts to breathe, but as you take silent stock of your body, nothing seems dangerously injured. No casts, no splints. Just a few bandages over what you assume are burns.
“Cyare,” a familiar voice says, full of relief.
You turn and meet Cody’s eyes. He looks like shit. Dark circles under his eyes, a long-dried bloody split in his lip, soot and ash coating his normally pristine armor. He sits next to you on a small stool, his elbows resting on his knees, one of his feet bouncing incessantly. But his worried expression melts into something calmer, softer as he takes in your conscious form.
He half-stands, brushing his fingers over your forehead gently, and then leans down. Though logically you know what’s about to happen it’s still a surprise when his lips meet yours in a soft, chaste kiss. You press your face up to his, meeting him, and you both hold there for a moment before he pulls away with a shuddering breath.
“I’m sorry,” he whispers, hand sliding down to grasp yours, “I had to. You scared me.”
“M’sorry,” you mumble, mind hazy with his kiss. Your tongue is thick and dry. Nearby, one of the medical devices jumps in its rhythm, the beeps coming faster.
He lowers back onto the stool. “What were you thinking?”
Grimacing, you drop your gaze. “It’s stupid.”
“Tell me,” he says, voice soft and kind.
“I was thinking about you,” you admit in a whisper.
His amber eyes widen in surprise. “Cyare.”
“Told you it’s dumb.”
Shaking his head, he huffs an incredulous chuckle. He inhales deeply, runs a hand through his dirty hair, and fixes you with a look so fond that your heart squeezes.
“I love you, you know,” he says.
The medical device goes crazy now, matching the way your heart stutters in your chest. “I- I love you, too.”
The smile he gives you makes all the pain, all the panic, worth it.

Star Trek, part 4: The Next Generation (Making the Federation even more Mary Sue)
[All images are owned by Paramount. Please don’t sue me]
The introduction of the Enterprise-A in Star Trek IV opened up the possibility of new adventures of the USS Enterprise, so when it was announced in 1987 that a new Star Trek television series would be starting, fans were hopeful that the crew of the Enterprise would go from the big screen back to the small screen.
They were very wrong.
youtube
(Thanks to Great80sTV)
Star Trek: The Next Generation (or simply TNG) takes place 80 years following the original Enterprise’s five-year missions. Gene Roddenberry is once again at the helm of the show, though he is assisted by Rick Berman, who would become the official showrunner following Roddenberry’s death.
The Federation of the 24th century is, if possible, even more utopian than before, having signed a peace treaty with the Klingon Empire (even if more than a few Klingons aren’t happy about it)
The latest ship to carry the legendary name, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) is a Galaxy class starship, capable of longer missions into deep space. Warp technology has progressed far enough that the formula for warp speed had to be amended. Now (according to fan publications) the calculation is to a power of 5 (meaning that Warp 5 would be 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5, or 3,125 times the speed of light. Using my Alpha Centauri example from my review of the original series, it would take about 9 1/2 hours at Warp 5 to reach Alpha Centauri from Earth, a much more reasonable time frame.
In addition to better Warp and defensive technologies, the Enterprise had a new technology known as holodecks, that made life-like imagery that the crew could touch and interact with, as a way to keep the crew from going stir-crazy. And the holodecks never, ever, ever had anything go wrong inside. Nope. Never. Not even once. (excuse me as I stifle several giggles)
Two other things that were different than previous Enterprises.
youtube
(Thanks to April 5, 2063)
Since the Galaxy class was designed to go farther out than was previously possible, crew quarters are large enough to allow the families of the crew to join them on board. Because of this, the saucer section can be detached from the Engineering hull to allow the civilian population to be evacuated in cases of extreme peril.
One other change was in the uniforms.
(Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter)
Starfleet has replaced the uniform used for over 70 years with an almost “throwback” uniform with the uniform color matching divisions (though red is now operations and gold is now service; but don’t worry, we’ll still call the doomed security personnel “Redshirts”)
You will note that the uniforms are all onesies. This will be changed by Season 2 (along with several minor changes as the series progresses, almost as if whoever designed the uniform didn’t plan for the comfort of the wearer)
Now let’s meet this new crew…
The Enterprise’s commanding officer is Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Sir Patrick Stewart, a Shakespearean actor who had never seen Star Trek before auditioning) Stewart takes the gravitas he learned on stage and brings it to the 24th century, setting the tone of the series to something a bit more thought-provoking and less fist-provoking (just one question: why is a French starship captain talking with a British accent?)
Picard’s First Officer is Commander William Riker, who tends to be more Kirk-like in his command style. He’s not the type to get into a brawl or anything, but he’s more the smooth-talking type who leads his team when danger presents itself. He tends to lead missions that are away from the ship, preferring the Captain stay within the relative safety of the Enterprise.
The Second Officer and Chief Navigator is Lt. Commander Data (played by Brent Spiner, who previously was known as recurring character Bob Wheeler on Night Court), an android created by Dr. Noonian Soong capable of independent initiative. Despite rumors to the contrary, Data earned the rank he holds. His journey of learning to be as human as possible often puts him at the center of humorous situations (like when he tried growing a beard) He (and it’s been confirmed that he is male, with all of the plumbing to match) is incapable of showing emotion or using contractions, and often gets so wrapped up in what he’s saying that he has to be cut off by whomever he’s talking to due to not knowing when to stop spouting facts.
Some time during the series (it’s never explained in or out of canon when or how), Data acquired a cat, which he named Spot (despite the fact that the cat had stripes) There were four different “Spots” throughout the series and NONE of them looked alike (plus Spot’s gender changed at least once) Spiner has gone on record saying he hated doing scenes that included Spot, as they always took three times as long to shoot due to the cat not cooperating.
The Ship’s Counselor and advisor to the Captain is Lt. Commander Counselor Deanna Troi (played by Marina Sirtis), a member of a telepathic race known as Betazoids (she mainly uses her abilities as an empath, preferring not to use telepathy) Troi is actually half-Betazoid. She previously had a relationship with Riker that ended amiably, which comes back into play every now and then.
Her mother Lwoxana (played by Majel Barrett) is infatuated with Picard, much to his chagrin.
The Chief Helmsman (and eventually Data’s best friend) is Lt. (later Lt. Commander) Geordi La Forge (played by Reading Rainbow host LaVar Burton) La Forge is blind (due to a blind girl wanting a role model on Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry having an ironic sense of humor by making the pilot blind) The object that looks like a banana clip (because that’s what it is!) is a VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement), which is connected to implants on La Forge’s temples that feed his brain sensory data, including infrared and ultraviolet emissions. Starting in Season 2 (following Season 1’s “Chief Engineer of the Week”), La Forge is transferred to Engineering where he remained through the remainder of the series and beyond.
Lt. Worf (played by Michael Dorn) is the first and (thus far) only Klingon to serve on a Starfleet vessel. He was the last survivor when the Romulans attacked a Klingon outpost when he was a boy. A Starfleet crewman found him and raised him. He is still very much a Klingon warrior, though tempered by Federation ideals.
He serves on the Enterprise as…well, I’m not entirely certain what his duties are at the start of the series other than to be the Token Klingon.
[FUN FACT: The prosthetic Dorn wore in season 1 was stolen after the season ended, so a new one had to be crafted but wasn’t an exact replica, which is why he looks different from Season 2 onward]
The Chief Medical Officer is Commander Dr. Beverly Crusher (played by Gates McFadden) Unlike Dr. McCoy, she doesn’t have any memorable catchphrases. Her husband was killed under Picard’s command years prior. She and Picard have unresolved romantic tension throughout the series.
Since families are allowed on the Enterprise, Dr. Crusher is allowed to bring her son Wesley (played by Wil Wheaton, who was previously known for Stand by Me) aboard. Wesley is a child prodigy who…
Look, I’m just gonna say it. I never liked Wesley (though I’ve gotten a lot of respect for Wheaton since he left the series) because he was pretty much a Mary Sue. He knows more about every aspect of the Enterprise than officers who’ve spent years to earn their posts. Despite being a teenager, he refers to the crew as “grown ups” rather than “adults” and (at least in the early parts of the first season) threw tantrums when the people in authority wouldn’t let him get his way.
That being said, he managed to somehow gain the respect of the crew (especially Captain Picard)

(Thanks again to April 5, 2063)
Last, but certainly not first, we have Head of Security and Tactical Officer Lt. Tasha Yar (played by Denise Crosby) Yar comes from a colony that had broken down, now ruled by the strongest. At times it seemed like there could be romantic leanings between Yar and Worf (and there WAS a sexual encounter with Data!) however, this never came to fruition as the season 1 finale will explain.
youtube
(Thanks to Frustrated Idealist)
It turns out that Denise Crosby had the same issue that Nichelle Nichols had (her role was essentially window dressing), but unlike Nichols, Crosby didn’t have a famous comedian to urge her to stay so she left the series. With Yar’s death, Worf was moved to her position (which really should’ve been the case from the start, given he’s a Klingon)
In addition to Wesley’s field commission and the transfers of Worf and La Forge (oh, and Riker grew a beard), there were two casting changes for season 2.
Backstage tension between Gates McFadden and the show’s head writer (who had gotten more authority as Gene Roddenberry started stepping back) caused McFadden to be fired. In canon, Dr. Crusher was reassigned to Starfleet Medical (though Wesley stayed aboard for some reason)
Replacing Dr. Crusher is Lt. Commander Dr. Kate Pulaski (played by Diana Maldaur (who had appeared in an episode of the Original Series and was best known for falling down an elevator shaft on LA Law) Dr. Pulaski was far more gruff than Dr. Crusher (more similar to Dr. McCoy, but without the catchphrases), and proved to be unpopular. She was replaced when the writer left and Rick Berman asked McFadden to return for season 3.
Finally, we come to the other Nichelle Nichols story she enjoyed telling.
There was a young black girl who saw Uhura and was amazed there was a black woman on TV who wasn’t a maid (this was the 60s, so that kind of thing was almost unheard of) She would be inspired to become a stand-up comedian, and eventually a popular movie actress. When TNG started, she went to Roddenberry and told him she wanted a role on the show…ANY role!
That little girl’s name?
Whoopie Goldberg, who was given the role of Guinan, the bartender of the Enterprise’s Ten Forward lounge. Guinan is of a race with cosmic-ish abilities (when the Enterprise is involved in a temporal event that changed history, Guinan was the only one who knew something was amiss)
Also over the course of the series we got interactions with Original Series crew members...
Admiral McCoy (retired, now over 130 years old)
Captain Scott (retired, who was suspended in time for over 70 years)
...and Ambassador Spock (well, Vulcans do live over 200 years)
It’s the interactions between the cast members that sets the series apart from the Original Series, and it truly is an ensemble cast; every cast member is given their chance in the spotlight on a number of episodes (particularly Data (in his quest to try to be more human) and Worf (as he tries to find his place between two cultures))
With the Klingons more-or-less friends, Starfleet needed more recurring alien threats to deal with (the Romulans were still around, but were quiet during the early seasons)
The Ferengi are a race that personify the absolute worst a capitalist society can be, prioritizing profit above all else (they even codify it in their code of “ethics” known as the Rules of Acquisition) Unfortunately, rather than being the threat they were intended they turned out to be little more than comic relief.
The Cardassians are a militaristic race bent on conquest (there are certainly a lot of those hanging around in the galaxy, aren’t there?) They tend to be cruel to those they conquer. However, to prevent a war the Federation ceded a number of Federation colony worlds that once belonged to the Cardassians, leaving those who chose to stay to fend for themselves against their new rulers (this may be the first crack in the utopian facade the Federation shows) Many Federation citizens (including a number of Starfleet personnel) formed a resistance group known as the Maquis, who are dedicated to freeing the colonies left to the Cardassians. Both the Federation and the Cardassians treat the group as terrorists.
Q (a member of the Q Continuum, played by John deLancie) is an omnipotent entity who appears occasionally to attempt to teach the Enterprise (and more importantly Captain Picard) about the fallacies of humanity and the dangers of What Lies Beyond. Many times his antics are played for laughs, but unlike the Ferengi there is always a dangerous undercurrent to Q’s games. Unfortunately, his antics have gotten Q in trouble with his fellow Q, and at one point he had been stripped of his powers and made human for a brief period.
Q is directly responsible for introducing the Federation to the gravest threat to the galaxy…
The Borg.
The Borg are humanoid beings that have been enhanced with cybernetics and, due to their hive mind, are able to adapt quickly to dangers (a phaser will down a few Borg, but they will quickly adapt and be able to repel future blasts on that light frequency) Any time they encounter a new species, they assimilate the species and their technology into their Collective.
The series ran for 7 seasons, beginning and ending with Q putting the humanity on trial (with the crew of the Enterprise playing the role of defendant for the entire race) The series laid the groundwork for two spin-off series set in the same era (plus at least one that debuted after 2010, so I won’t be covering it), but those are tales for future reviews.
If you would like to watch the series it’s available on Paramount+, PlutoTV, or behind your favorite paywall. If you would like to see an episode reviewed, please let me know!
One quick note before I go: I would like to show the tale of the first Meeting of the Generations (which occurred during the filming of Star Trek V), as told by Wil Wheaton.
[DISCLAIMER: This is told entirely from Wheaton’s perspective, and I’m sure William Shatner has a different take on it, but given all the stories about Shatner over the years, I’m inclined to think this is closer to the truth]

Prelude: The regrets of an imperatrix:
Notes from the author: I started writing a few months ago and defined a lot of historical events in my fantasy, this story goes over one of them and I had the idea to build the chapters as an Opera. Let's see how it goes. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The shared military and science station, Amanitore, had been peaceful for over a hundred years. Several species walk among the humans, but it was said that the station was shared because nearly 30% of the people living there were Kal’Hal. A 10% of the personnel that came and went on the passing ships were from other species. The station orbited between the ninth and tenth planet of the human solar system. In its four hundred years it had grown exponentially as one of the main stops orbiting the original human system and especially with the astounding amount of commerce conducted after we joined the Galactic Council a hundred and fifty years ago.
Jeanette Iceni was really happy with her life, she had gained a position as general two years ago, and she was raising a young daughter with her husband in the Amanitore station. Her skills have been proved as, maybe one of the best, political negotiator of the outer ring. Humans had been a recognized space faring species for the last eighth hundrish years, but only accepted as a significant governing self sustainable species in the last century and a half. And now, she was there, on the doors to all the vast space, handling human interactions and setting a peaceful example of how humanity could be a significant allied on the universe.
I walked into the command room of the station. This huge monster held almost half million souls between all the species that came and went and all the ones that lived here. A lot of familiar faces saluted me as I was in charge of all the military and security operations of this place. I told them to rest and Ictenia, a Kal’Hal that had gained her position as operation chief, dragged herself on her long tail with a data pad on her hand.
Ictenia – General Iceni, I have the list of the operations conducted during your absence since yesterday.
Jeanette – Thanks Lt Ictenia, is anything out of the ordinary, or it does require my attention?
Ictenia – Nothing immediate, but you should know that a Gubni ship asked permission to restock and refuel and is carrying a Gubni ambassador.
Jeanette – What? How I was not notified that an ambassador was travelling through our territory?
Ictenia – It wasn’t in any notice. How should I proceed?
Jeanette – Prepare the upper levels docks for a welcome ceremony and handle the communications with their ship to prepare for the event.
I smelled something fishy. The Gubni came from a garden world, even they evolved from plants. Nothing made them more proud than the fanfare that came with political events, and here I had one that came without notifying half of the universe where he was going.
The rest of the day went normally, I learned that in three days the Gubni ship was going to dock. Some Sav’Jok made a scene and I had to handle the situation only because they didn’t understand that this was a human base, and they had to acknowledge our laws. A lot of others informs later, and I was done for the day. I wondered how my little girl did today at school while I took a v-train that went through several levels to fetch her.
As I arrived to the school, I already could see her outside chatting with her friends, one young LintNok that haven’t learned to fly yet and two Sanarin, which I was sure she befriended more because they resembled an earth feline than any other reason. As I came closer, Kluc, the LintNok youngling, puffed her feathers as a greeting and the other three turned around. Jazmine, my daughter, run to me and gave me a hug while the other two bowed as a signal of respect. I chatted with them a few minutes as they told how their day was at school and I parted home. Mike was going to arrive later, so I stayed in the living room playing with Jazmine and then sent her to do her homework.
I took the chance to read about the Gubni and after two hours the only thing I accomplished was being more unease than before with all this. My husband came and took me out of my data pad, distracted me for a while until my frown was gone and after the diner and having Jazmine finally asleep we talked about my suspicions until I calmed down.
The next day I focused on the preparations for the arrival of the ambassador. I managed to get as much military presence as was peacefully possible, and as much as the inner council that handled the station allowed me. I was part of that council as my rank required it, but that group of tight up old people reacted as if I was being paranoid. They couldn’t see something wrong in anything, never. This day was going to be long, so I made some time to let my husband know he needed to get Jazmine off school, and then they could come as a parade was going to be held for the ambassador.
Hours later, a lot of discussions in the middle, and after straining the last drop of patience of my subordinates with the promise of a day off in mind, all the preparations finished. Finally, I could meet with my husband and held my little girl in my arms. We took our seats on the front row and saw the soft polished Gubni ship as it softly reached for the dock. It was a majestuous sight, as the ship reflected the lights and look like a dagger that cut the sight of the station and moved very differently to other's ship, like it was weightless. No thrusters, windows, or decks on it, only the sober silver reflection. Suddenly, several lines appeared beneath the ship and the standard docking clamps appeared and with a soft touch it finally landed and grabbed itself to the station. The band started playing while another set of lines made themselves visible and the ramp stated emerging from the ship.
A chill went down my spine, something was wrong. I grabbed Jazmine and pulled my husband to start running. Mike followed me dumbfounded until a second later laser shoots were heard and all the screaming started. I was a general, a part of humanity first line of defence but right now I was a mother, so I ran, I needed to protect my baby.
The screams and shots followed us for a few corridors, and then the explosion started. It wasn’t a rogue ship, it was a full scale attack to the station. The strong wind that was making it difficult for us to move meant that the atmosphere was leaking, quick. As I arrived to the escape pods I turn around and saw my husband looking at me, lying on the floor, all his left side red from the blood, and with only one look I understood. He wanted me to keep going. I climbed to the pod, pushed the emergency button and put my daughter on a seat. She looked at me with big tear filled eyes, she was bleeding too. “It hurts mommy” were the last words I heard from her as the sudden jolt of the ejection threw me to the floor.

What’s a trope you love to write?
As soon as I saw this ask, I had to go look at my Ao3 page because I legitimately spaced on everything I had ever written.
Not exactly a trope per say, but I most often find myself writing missing scenes or alternate POVs. I haven’t posted many works, and the ones I have are pretty spread out across fandoms, but the “missing scene” I’m probably most proud of right now is “Telling Stories to the Empty Space Where You Used to Be” for Star Trek Next Generation, and specifically for the episode “The Most Toys”, where an evil rich dude kidnaps and fakes the death of Lt. Commander Data (an android) to keep him in his collection of rare things. It’s an examination of how an empath like Counselor Troi might handle the “death” of someone she could never sense in the first place.
Summary:
“Missing scene from "The Most Toys"
Data is in a world of trouble: kidnapped and imprisoned by a mad collector who treats him like a prized posession instead of a person. But this story isn't about that. Because right now on the Enterprise, everyone believes Data died in a shuttle accident. Right now, Deanna and Will grieve for their friend.”
Thanks for the question! 💜💜💜

Refueling at Europa
So this is a short sci-fi story i wrote 2 to 3 years ago. I'm still learning, so please give me whatever constructive criticism you can.
I'll also be posting a few more of my stories while I'm currently working on that one lesbian bug alien romance story I posted about before.
Synopsis: A Blackbox from a group of Voyagers’ is recovered after their starship is found destroyed. It reveals that refueling off of the water from Jupiter’s moon Europa may not be the best idea.
“AY-005 to command.” the terminal crackled and the image of Lt. Pallin faded into view through the static. “One moment Pallin. Gotta clean up your image.” I replied into the microphone as I twisted the dials that lined the terminal. Slowly Lt. Pallin’s face became more clear and her voice lost some of the accompanying grain. “Alright go ahead.” I was eager to hear her report, usually being on night shift I rarely get any first hand contact. It's all told to me by the previous shifts or in emailed memorandums, this was a welcome surprise. “Right,” Lt. Pallin began “We found the black box that belonged to AX-004.” My heart leaped in my chest. This was astounding news, AX-004 had been destroyed a few months ago, and we only found out thanks to some routine telescopic searching. “That's fantastic news, Pallin. Send it in.” The loud clicking of my key-board nearly drowned out my instructions as I prepared the terminal to receive the blackbox’s contents. “Copy.” she replied and moved just off screen. I went and made myself a fresh pot of coffee as the data was being transferred, my shoes sticking and making awful squelches as I walked. They really need to clean this place.
I made my way back and sat down with a new mug of coffee steaming, the pot set next to me. The terminal’s processor revved and the fan spun, working hard to complete the download. Finally the green bar with a ninety-nine percent hovering over finally filled and presented “DOWNLOAD COMPLETE” and Lt. Pallin’s face returned. “I’ll review this right away. Thanks Lieutenant. Be careful.” I praised, and I readied myself for a long night. Her chuckle was distorted as the feed gained more interference. Before she cut out I heard her say “All G— will con— need to refuel. Planning— Europa’s ocean.” Then she was gone. Honestly, I was surprised her communication had lasted as long as it did. These terminals may have been the latest and greatest in light-year communication, but even they have their limits. I queued up the file, only an audio log accompanied by descriptive text of the ship's onboard computer system. Sadly the AX series of ships were just old enough to not be equipped with cameras but were equipped with auditory receptors allowing the crew to use voice commands. That way they needn’t travel to a ship terminal just to adjust the temperature or run diagnostics. I grabbed myself a snack from my desk, my notepad, and settled in.
<SCS> 00:30 running diagnostics. Fuel low. Reserve error. Waking Captain…
(Capt. Love): Computer, what’s happening?
(SCS): Request not recognized.
(Capt. Love): God dammit. Computer run diagnostic.
(SCS): One moment. Diagnostic report: Engines- fine, shields-fine, landing gear- fine, life support- fine, Fuel - Low, Fuel Reserve - Error
(Capt. Love): So it's a fuel problem. Alright, damn. Computer, scan for possible fuel sources, enough to complete the mission.
(SCS): One moment.
<SCS> Scanning…
(SCS): Large source of H2O found. 325 miles from current position. Location: Europa.
(Capt. Love): Huh, okay. Computer wake crew.
(SCS): One moment.
<SCS> Waking crew…
(Cpl. Benings): Awww, come on. What now?
(Pvt. Dell): What's going on? Are we here?
(Dr. Ve): Well that was a nice nap.
(SCS): Captain, crew have been awakened.
(Capt. Love): All hands to the bridge.
(Cpl. Bennings) What’s going on Captain?
(Capt. Love): Low on fuel and the reserve is malfunctioning. I found us a good refueling point, at least enough to finish the mission. Europa.
(Cpl. Bennings): Alright so we just fly down and grab some water, easy. I’ll go check out the reverve, see what's up. Though why’d you wake up these two?
(Pvt. Dell): Yeah I was gonna ask the same thing. I'm no engineer.
(Capt. Love): Good experience for you Dell and I figured the Doc wouldn't want to miss landing on a moon made of ocean.
(Dr. Ve.): Thank you.
(Capt. Love): Computer chart course for Europa
(SCS): One moment.
<SCS> Charting course. Ideal landing zone found. Engaging Autopilot. Engaging engines…
<SCS> 01:20 Deploying landing gear. Intciating landing…
(SCS): Please be advised. The temperature on Europa is currently -260℉ or -160℃. Thermal suits are recommended.
(Cpl. Bennings): No shit sherlock. Oww, sorry.
(Capt. Love): Alright, Everyone ready?
(Cpt. Bennings): Yep.
(Pvt. Dell): Yes Sir.
(Dr. Ve): Almost. Okay.
<SCS> All crew members have left the ship. Switching to remote communications.
(Cpl. Bennings): Holy shit, I thought my mother in-law was cold.
(Capt. Love): Imagine it without the thermal suits. Now Dell, bring that over here. Alright This is literally the definition of plug and chug. We insert the drill, it drills the ice, sucks it up and puts it in the reserve. Then when we reach the water below the surface, that will fill up our main tank.
(Dr. Ve): Would you look at those geysers? Amazing.
(Capt. Love): Hey Doc don't go too far, the surface is very unstable from the shifting currents.
(Dr. Ve): Oh right. Sorry.
(SCS): All members be advised. Large life-form detected. Proceed with caution.
(Pvt. Dell): What?
(Capt. Love): Computer, elaborate.
(SCS): Sure. Lifeform location 85 miles below the surface. Lifeform appears to be 360
feet in length. Weight estimated to be 467 tons. Creature’s thermal signature indicates it is an endotherm.
(Cpl Bennings): What the fuck? Really? First alien life we encounter and this type of shit. Great.
(Capt. Love): Hold it together Bennings. Computer, track lifeform. Warn us if it's within 2.75 miles of the surface. Dell get the Doctor back to the ship, I'll finish here.
<SCS> Lifeform movement 63 miles from surface. Fuel 54% complete.
(Pvt. Dell): Watch your step Doctor.
<SCS> 2 of 4 crew members on board. Lifeform movement 34 miles from the surface. Fuel 65% complete.
(Clp Bennings): Come on Sir. I don't like this, it's too quiet.
(Capt. Love): Just as quiet as before Bennings.
(Clp Bennings): Yeah but now there’s a fucking leviathain beneth us.
(Capt. Love): What?
(Clp. Bennings): Nothin’.
<SCS> Lifeform movement 22 miles. Fuel 78% complete
(Capt. Love): Dell get the ship ready for departure. We are not waiting to see this thing, understood?
(Pvt. Dell) Yes sir. Computer, prepare the cockpit for liftoff.
(SCS) Sure. One moment…
<SCS> Initiating manual piloting system…
(Capt. Love): Computer, Fuel status update.
(SCS): One moment… Fuel 86% complete
(Clp Bennings): Alright. Alright, we making progress.
(SCS): ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! Lifeform within 2.75 miles of surface. ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!
(Clp. Bennings): Fuck.
(Capt Love): Run!
(SCS): Lifeform 2.00 miles from surface.
(Dr. Ve): Come on! Hurry!
(SCS): Lifeform 1.52 miles from surface. Warning surface becoming unstable.
(Capt. Love): The Ice is cracking, come on Bennings! Dell start lift off!
(Pvt. Dell): Yes Sir!
<SCS> Manual liftoff engaged. All control to pilot.
(Clp. Bennings): Oh Shit! Guys Help! Fuck thats cold!
(Capt. Love): Shit Bennings! Fuck! Dell get this thing off the ground so we can get him!
<SCS>3 of 4 crew members onboard. Gaining altitude… (SCS): Lifeform within 0.46 miles of surface.
(Clp. Bennings): Oh shit I think I see it! Fuck, I think it sees me!
(Capt. Love): We’re coming, Bennings! Get to a high point!
(SCS): ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! Lifeform has reached the surface. ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! (Clp. Bennings): Holy— how many eyes does this thing have?!?
(Capt. Love): What the fuck?
(Dr. Ve): Oh God.
(Capt. Love): Dell, you see him? Avoid those tentacles!
(Pvt. Dell): Holy shit! Holy shit! Why didn't I just go to College!
(Capt. Love): Keep it together. Bennings grab my hand!
(Clp Bennings): Ha, got ya! Ok, now pull my ass up!
(Capt. Love): We’re trying! Not our fault you're a mountain of muscle, lay off the gym will ya?
(Clp. Bennings): I’m Sorry!
<SCS> All Crew members have returned to ship. Sealing outer doors…
(Dr. Ve): Alright let me check you over.
(Capt. Love): Ha, good Flying, Dell. Now get us the Fu–
*End of all downloaded information*
I leaned back in my chair sweating, exhausted from simply listening and reading the recount of what happened. My mind spun with billions of horrific images, attempting to grasp what they had encountered. In the end I only succeeded in conjuring a headache, and took a swig of my forgotten coffee, now chilled by the AC unit running full blast. I sat in silence for minutes that stretched for hours, shudders and chills ran up and down my spine. Then a thought pierced me, spurred me into frantic action.
I twisted and pulled on the terminal’s hard unfeeling dials, typing command after command to the point I thought the keyboard would break. I had to reach the Lieutenant, warn her. I know they didn't have the correct equipment to have seen what I had seen, read what I read. I finally got the signal out. One minute turned into two, two to ten, ten to thirty. But the Terminal only displayed static.

Rust Compiler Performance Triage
Our build pipeline got sped up by PR #112012, which side-steps one of the rustc rebuilds we were suffering with before. (There is further potential speed-up by caching LLVM, as noted by on that PR.) Other than that, various small regressions that are largely noise, as well as one unexpected increase in binary sizes from PR #109005 that we should follow up on.
Triage done by @pnkfelix. Revision range: adc719d7..4bd4e2ea
7 Regressions, 3 Improvements, 5 Mixed; 5 of them in rollups 46 artifact comparisons made in total

Thanks for tagging me @permanentlyexhaustedpigeon88 <3
My primary blorbo: Sauron from Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion/Rings of Power. I have loved Sauron since I first read the Silmarillion 22 years ago. I've always had a soft spot for villains and anti-heroes, and Sauron in my opinion is the best villain there is: manipulative, brilliant (but also a bit dumb - gotta love it), equal parts impressive, intimidating, and pathetic, complex motives and worldview, cruel, cunning, tragic, overdramatic, the whole shebang. I read about him song-dueling, defying lightning from God Himself, roleplaying an emissary of the Valar, and laughing his head off as he watches his intricately-laid plans coming to fruition and I was a goner. Rings of Power and Charlie Vickers have done nothing to dampen the fire.
My second blorbo: Lt Commander Data Soong from Star Trek: TNG. Oh Data, my cinnamon roll android, my beloved. Ironically, I love Data for many of the *opposite* reasons that I love Sauron. I love how utterly *good* Data is. He exudes all the positives of humanity: creativity, curiosity, honor, loyalty, bravery, friendship. Data was also key for me in realizing my own autism and embracing it as part of who I am.
My third blorbo: Dustfinger from the Inkheart trilogy. Dustfinger hit me like a lightning bolt the moment I first read about him when I was 17. He was exactly the sort of character I am weak for: a conflicted, tortured anti-hero who also has goodness buried deep deep inside. I also related to him strongly at that time in my life especially, as someone who felt like a constant outsider stuck in the wrong world.
My fourth blorbos (because they come in a set) Princess Marianne and the Bog King from Strange Magic. Oh my god, these two! My most beloved OTP. My punk rock fairy warrior princess and my awkward, grumpy, Scottish goblin king. These two are so dear to me, both of them outsiders who feel alone, who have both been severely hurt and struggle to trust, who find each other and are able to match each other's freak. I've always been a sucker for Beauty and the Beast and enemies to lovers, and these two hit me right in the feels.
My fifth blorbo: Loki from Norse Mythology/Runemarks/Marvel. I've never met an iteration of Loki that I didn't like, but my personal favorite is Loki from the Runemarks book series by Joanne Harris. I love him for many of the same reasons I love Dustfinger: conflicted anti-hero who maybe has a little bit of good buried deep, deep down if you are willing to dig for it. I've always been a sucker for trickster archetypes, and Loki is the ultimate folklore trickster for me.

I’ll start with my favourite Pedro boys😍
Don’t glare, Joel! You’re always my number one😁
Joel Miller. He’s not my first Pedro love (it was Din) but the biggest one for sure❤️ (52 fics prove my obsession😅) I think we all feel the same about him so I don’t need to explain why I love the man. I don’t wanna start crying🥺 He deserves everything best. The love of my life❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Din Djarin. He’s such a cunt lol but also soft, kind, brave, caring!! he’s the best dad🥹😍 His armor is super hot, his voice makes me weak but I lost my mind when he took his helmet off. He was so miserable and bloody, just my type🥺🥵 and Din brought me to fanfic so he’ll forever be in my heart🥹❤️🔥
Javi P. Do I even need to explain myself?🫠🫠🫠
Frankie Morales. When I need comfort, I write Frankie. My perfect teddy bear😍❤️
Tommy Miller. Gabriel Luna played him so well! he’s gorgeous and his kind eyes and sweet smile won my heart🥹❤️🔥
Dean, Sam, Cas. I put these three together because I love them equally (ok, I love Dean a liiiiittle bit more)❤️🔥
Jeff and Britta (Community) She’s a beautiful mess, he’s a lovable asshole, I wanna be their third❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Love Quinn (You) I love her so fn much! She’s passionate, she loves hard and just wants to be happy🥹 She’s never done anything wrong😤
Chandler Bing. What an amazing character! Desperately looking for love and then being the absolute best tv husband😍 and his sense of humor is everything!! My favorite Friend for sure❤️❤️❤️

Star Trek, part 7: The TNG Movies VII-X (so a show that lasted more than twice as long as TOS gets just over half as many movies?)
[All images are owned by Paramount. Please don’t sue me.]
[QUICK NOTE: This is a bare-bones review of the films rather than my usual tongue-in-cheek blow-by-blow review since I’m trying to cover four movies in one review. If you would like to see any of the films reviewed in-depth, please let me know]
With the final film starring the Original Series crew and the season finale of TNG in the past, it was only a matter of time before the TNG crew would hit the big screen. How would Picard and Company make their mark on movie audiences?
The answer is “It’s complicated.”
While not every film with Kirk and Company was a masterpiece (in fact, one could say that only every even-numbered film was good) they were more-or-less (I’m looking at you The Final Frontier!) entertaining. In the case of the TNG films, only one of the films is unanimously considered "good", while the rest…well, at least they weren’t The Final Frontier, but not by much in some cases.
I should also note that none of the TNG films have number designations, showing that they’re not from the same time frame as the previous films.
There were only 4 films due to the final one not being well-received both in reviews and at the box office, forcing Paramount to scrap plans for a fifth film to tie up any loose ends.
Those that were waiting for DS9 or Voyager films would unfortunately be disappointed, as following the final TNG film there would not be another film in the series for 7 years (and that was a reboot to the franchise)
But now, onto the films! If you would like to watch them, they’re available on Paramount+ or behind your favorite paywall.
The first film was a “passing of the torch” moment, transitioning the eras for the big screen.
As such, Kirk, Chekov, and Scotty were in attendance for the beginning of the film, which was the maiden voyage of…
…the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B), an Excelsior class starship. This was a publicity stunt where they brought in Kirk (now retired), Scott, and Chekov for the press to gawk at.
Suddenly, they receive a distress call as a strange “ribbon” of temporal energy was about to envelop a transport. Unfortunately, as this is a dog and pony show, there were a lot of systems that weren’t yet online and the Enterprise was ill-equipped to deal with this crisis.
They manage to save some of the crew, but the Enterprise is caught in the ribbon’s gravity. Scotty has an idea how to save the Enterprise (because of course he does), so Kirk (because he has to be the hero) goes to pull off Scotty’s hare-brained plan. It succeeds (because of course it does), however…
The section of the Enterprise Kirk was working in is hit, causing a hull breach that blows him into ribbon’s grasp, killing him (that will NOT look good on the captain’s resume!)
Among the survivors are Guinan (future Ten Forward bartender)
…Tolian Soran, who desperately wants to go back to the ribbon.
Fast forward 70-ish years. The Enterprise-D is given new uniforms to match DS9, Worf gets a promotion to Lt. Commander (just in time to be transferred to Deep Space Nine), and Data decides it’s time to try installing an emotion chip he acquired near the end of the series (unfortunately, Data was not prepared for the onslaught of emotions the chip would grant him, leading to rather forced “humor” as he adjusts)

(Thanks to enessis)
However, all of this frivolity needs to wait as Soran has developed technology that can extinguish stars, and he intends to use it to divert the ribbon to the planet Veridian III so he can finally rejoin it (Guinan explains that part of her is inside, and it’s a paradise)
Picard attempts to stop Soran as the Enterprise is attacked by a pair of Klingon renegades they’ve had dealings with in the past. Not only does Picard fail (drawing him into the ribbon as well), but…
youtube
(Thanks to Wolftime Gaming)
However, all is not lost, since the portion of Guinan tell Picard he can leave any time, and place. What’s more, there’s someone who can help!
Yep, Shatner just has to be the hero one last time!
Anyway, they go back to stop Soren again (why? Why not go a bit further back to before Soren was ready?) and stop him this time, but…
Well, at least Shatner can’t return to hog the spotlight in future films.
With the awkward passing of the torch, we need to replace the Enterprise, so…
Meet the new USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E), a Sovereign class starship. The ship has a crew of 700, but not families (and after what happened to the Enterprise-D, who can blame them?). Additionally, the Enterprise now has its own EMH (that Dr. Crusher despises) Most of the command crew (except Worf) have transferred to the Enterprise-E (making casting the film a lot easier)
One other change between films is in the uniform…
(Thanks to EVIL ED)
We see the second Starfleet uniform change over the course of a decade. I’ve already covered the change in my review of DS9. You will also note that ocular technology has advanced between films, as La Forge has bionic eyes rather than needing a VISOR.
But enough about the differences, on to the film!
First Contact is the first of two Trek films directed by Jonathan Frakes (though he has directed episodes from all three TNG-era shows, as well as three of the Paramount+ Trek shows and a Trek parody series)
Earth is once again threatened by the Borg. Once again, the Enterprise is able to sweep in and Save The Day.
During the battle, the USS Defiant (commanded by Lt. Commander Worf) is critically damaged. Fortunately, the surviving crew is beamed to the Enterprise (allowing Michael Dorn to get a paycheck from the film)
However (what, you didn’t expect it to be this easy, did you? It would be a rather short movie otherwise)…
…a sphere inside the cube escapes and opens a temporal rift, which causes Earth to assimilate in the present (wouldn’t that make all the humans on the Enterprise suddenly become Borg as well?)
The Enterprise travels slightly farther back in time (the far-flung future of 2063, to be exact) to stop the Borg, which allows them to meet…
Zephram Cochrane, the inventor of the Warp Drive (or at least Earth’s version of it; better get on it, you have less than 40 years to pull it off!) The crew manages to defeat the Borg, save Earth, and witness Cochrane’s historic flight, in which he makes First Contact (hence the title of the film) with the first aliens Earth has officially encountered.
youtube
(Thanks to Binge Society)
First Contact is by far the best of the TNG films (and could surpass The Wrath of Khan as the best overall) It also sets the stage for the next Trek series (more on that in a future review)
Unfortunately, it’s pretty much all downhill from here.
Insurrection was also directed by Jonathan Frakes. This film went for a light-hearted approach after the violent First Contact. Unfortunately, no one thought about the fact that The Final Frontier was also mostly humor and look how THAT turned out!
Worf has once again joined the crew, despite the fact that Deep Space Nine is in the middle of a war with the Dominion (and he should be mourning Jadzia Dax’s death), but there he is because he just happened to be in the neighborhood.
The Enterprise and crew investigate a planet that emits particles rendering its inhabitants effectively immortal. Additionally, the crew enjoy benefits from their brief exposure, including Geordi’s eyes temporarily being able to see, Worf more or less going through Klingon puberty again, as well as…
youtube
(Thanks to April 5, 2063)
…the rekindling of Riker and Troi’s relationship. Of course, Riker had to make a tiny concession.
(Don’t worry, the beard will return in time for the next film)
An alien race (with the help of a Starfleet Admiral) are attempting to move the indigenous people to harvest the particles for themselves. The Enterprise manages to expose and thwart the plot in time for Worf to return to Deep Space Nine for the final season.
Which brings us to the final TNG film
Jonathan Frakes did not direct this film. It was instead given to a director who never watched TNG, and boy howdy did it show!
The film starts happily enough…
youtube
(Thanks again to April 5, 2063)
Yes, Riker and Troi manage to continue their relationship from the last movie and get married! (the first of two, as they will be having a traditional Betazoid wedding later…in which everyone in the wedding party is nude!
As you can see, they managed to shoehorn Worf in once again (this time as a wedding guest, but that doesn’t explain why he sticks around after)
Meanwhile, the Romulan Empire is being overthrown by a subject race, the Remans (get it? Romulus and Remus? READ A BOOK!) The Enterprise is sent to assist the Romulans. Along the way, they encounter…
…a prototype android, designated B-4 (get it? Before? The writing is definitely top-notch here!) which they bring aboard.
Upon arrival at Romulus, they encounter the Reman leader…
…Shinzon (played by Tom Hardy, who would go on to play Bane and Venom), a clone of Picard the Romulans had planned to use to infiltrate the Federation but later abandoned. Shinzon intends on invading the Federation and poisoning Earth, killing all inhabitants.
Picard uses the Enterprise as a battering ram, crippling Shinzon’s ship and boards to defeat him…
youtube
(Thanks to Omega Trek)
Before too many of you are up in arms about Data’s death, Brent Spiner had been wanting a death scene for Data since Insurrection due to the fact that he felt he was getting too old to continue to look like he did in the series. However, he was given an “out” to continue playing the part…
youtube
(Thanks to Rotten Tomatoes)
Data had made a backup of his memories into B-4, meaning Data could continue in another (slightly older-looking) body had there been a fifth film.
This ends the Star Trek films before JJ Abrams lens-flared the franchise up nine years later.
If anyone would like me to review any of the films more in-depth, please let me know!

Of all the days to be out on a mission, this had to be the one of the worst. She wanted nothing more than to curl up in bed, hold her infant son as tightly as she could, and forget that the galaxy existed for just a little while. But life didn’t care that Kanan Jarrus had been dead for a year to the date, the Empire was still out there and she had a duty as an Alliance General. So she bundled up all the unpleasant feelings roaming around in her mind and locked them away, turning her focus on her team and the dark, foreboding hallways of the abandoned space station.
It had been pure luck, coming across the derelict Imperial space station in some decrypted files sent to her team from another cell. Finding out that the Imperial Officer overseeing the mechanisms of the space station was none other than Grand Admiral Thrawn, well, Hera didn’t know if it was fate or luck but she wasn’t going to pass up the chance to investigate whatever the Chiss had been up to.
Especially if it could lead her to him and more importantly, Ezra.
The station was cold, so cold that Hera’s breath clouded the air in front of her as she carefully stepped over fallen cargo crates that littered the hallway. According to the schematics they were able to download from the data files, the station's central control room was dead ahead. She had made the decision to split her strike team into two groups to cover more ground. The station might not be operational anymore but that didn’t mean the Empire wasn’t watching it.
She led her group towards the main control room while the other team headed for the only area on the station that was still operating on low power. Maybe they would find something useful there, something that could help cripple the Empire for good. Or better yet, a clue as to what Thrawn had his minions researching while he had been busy terrorizing Lothal and if it could lead her to Ezra.
Thus far, her search for Ezra had been less than successful. With the attack on Yavin and the subsequent destruction of the Death Star, Hera didn’t have the time or resources available to really look for him. There hadn’t been a night where she didn’t lie awake in her cot while guilt slowly ate away at her. Ezra was her crew, her family, and she wasn’t doing everything she could to find him.
But now she finally had a chance to change that.
Her team’s footsteps echoed strangely in the long metal hallway as they advanced towards the main control center, the light from their glowrods hardly enough to cut through the gloom. Broken pipes hung from the ceiling, several sections of the walls torn back to expose wiring and other salvageable bits that had begun to rust in the low atmosphere of the station.
It was unclear in the data they had recovered what Thrawn was using the station for or why it had been abandoned but Hera was determined to find out. She adjusted her grip on her glowrod to activate her wrist comm. “Strike Leader Blue is this Strike Leader Green, what’s your status?” she asked in a commanding whisper.
“Strike Leader Green this is Strike Leader Blue, we’re coming up on the source of power now.” crackled Lueteniant Bitee’s voice. “Stand by.”
Hera wordless signaled her team to stop, the four rebel fighters turning to face her with drawn faces. They all held their breath while they waited for Strike Team Blue to report in.
After several tense minutes, Hera’s wrist com crackled to life. “Uh, General.” Lt. Bitee said. “You’re gonna want to see this.”
“What is it?” she demanded, her feet already in motion, tearing back down the hallway.
“It’s best if you see it in person, Sir.”
A pit of dread formed in her stomach as she ran. Thousands of possibilities raced through her mind. Was it bodies? A weapon? Something far worse?
Hera turned a corner, her boots clattering against the durasteel floor. Up ahead she could see Strike Team Blue clustered around a set of blastdoors. An eerie blue light spilled out from the chamber beyond, the smell of bacta thick in the cold air.
She slowed her pace as she approached, Strike Team Blue clearing the way for her to pass. Her hands began to sweat in her gloves, her heart fluttering against her breastbone as she crossed the threshold.
Somehow, it was colder in the chamber than the rest of the station, even with the power still activated. Hera shivered as she looked around, taking in the line of cots that made up the left wall and the impressive amount of medical equipment scattered about. Even if they didn’t find anything of use, they could always salvage the med supplies. She spotted Lt. Bitee standing by one of two large bacta tanks fixed to the right wall. Hera approached him, her blood pounding in her ears.
As she grew closer she noticed a figure floating in the thick healing substance, a figure she would recognize anywhere.
Kanan.
Suddenly Hera was back on that fuel pod, her body suspended in midair, held aloft by the current of Force Kanan had directed at her. She could see him standing there with arms outstretched as he pushed back the flames. She watched as milky white eyes turned blue.
Then he was gone, ripped from her life in an explosion of metal and fire, leaving behind a wound that would never heal.
Kanan had sacrificed himself so they could live.
He was gone and Hera’s life had shattered.
Kanan was dead
And yet, here he was, floating in a bacta tank.
Hera didn’t remember moving. The next thing she was consciously aware of was the smooth transparasteel pressed up against her face, her eyes wide as they took in Kanan’s body. His hair had grown out again, the long strands floating around his face, suspended in the bacta. There was a respirator strapped to his mouth and she could see that his amber skin was marred by a network of waxy looking scars. She didn’t trust the gentle rise and fall of his chest. She didn’t dare believe her eyes.
“Is he alive?” she asked in a hushed whisper, her breath fogging up the glass. “Tell me, is he alive.”
“Readings say so, Sir.” Lt. Bitee said, his voice far away and echoey. “Looks like he was safe to come out of batca a few months ago.”
“Get him out.” Hera ordered, unable to detach herself from the front of the tank.
“But General, we don’t know who he is-” Lt. Bitee interjected.
Hera spun to face him, her lekku flying. “I said get him out.” she demanded in a harsh snap. “Now.”
Lt. Bitee paled but nodded, gesturing to the other members of his team to begin extracting Kanan from the tank. Someone pulled her back and Hera let them, watching with sharp eyes as Kanan’s body was lifted from the bacta and slowly lowered onto a hovercart. The second the respirator was free, she was by his side.
She let her gloves drop to the floor, unbothered by the chill in the room. Her fingers trembled as they hovered over Kanan’s familiar skin. Slowly, she lowered them to the underside of his neck.
Kanan’s heartbeat was a strong and steady tempo.
Hera fell onto him, her arms pulling his limp body close, not caring about the sticky bacta that covered him. She could feel the heat from his skin, hear the sound of his breathing, smell that familiar smell that was so distinctly Kanan.
He was here.
Kanan was here and Kanan was alive.
