With a small chuckle you entered the living room, the cup of freshly brewed coffee in your hands as you walked over and offered it to him.

"It would be improper for a student to receive help from the highest authority in the Akademiya" You spoke the words with a smile playing on your lips, knowing that he wanted nothing more than to help and despised not being allowed to.

"Besides, you hardly know enough about my field of study to be of any meaningful assistance" As you spoke, he took a sip of the coffee, visibly relaxing at the warm feeling spreading through his body from both the drink and your presence.

"Hm, is that so?" A smile tugged at the corner of his lips as he sat down on the couch, leaning back and crossing his legs. It was clear that he took it as a challenge, if the way he reached out for your book on the table was any indication. You swatted his hand away with a grin before grabbing the book and placing it out of his reach.

"You have enough tiresome scholars and students to deal with at work as it is, no need to add me to that list" Although you were mostly teasing him, there was a hint of truth to your words, you could see the toll his current position took on him. He let out a sigh, not having any argument against your statement, instead he patted the spot next to him, signaling that he would like you to sit close to him. With a satisfied smile, you sat down, resting your body against his toned frame. Alhaitham placed a soft kiss to your hair, silently thanking you for putting up with him. The two of you sat in comfortable silence while he finished his coffee, you eventually picked up your book again and started reading, feeling him shift next to you to read along.

"You should take a bath. You reek of poorly-written submissions and the sweat of scholars desperate for funding" You poked his chest, not taking your eyes off of the book in your hands. He let out a low, amused huff before wrapping an arm around your shoulders.

"And it seems my *carelessness* has caused it to rub off on you." His voice was matter-of-factly, but if you'd care to look back at him, you would see a small glint in his teal eyes. A small giggle escaped you as you closed your book and tried to wiggle free, which only caused him to pull you closer with a soft hum. He set the now empty mug down and reached over to take the book from your hands and place it down on the table before bringing his hand back up to gently caress your cheek.

"Perhaps you would be interested in joining me for a bath?" His voice was still calm, although you could hear the hopeful tone entering his words. You leaned into his hand on your cheek, enjoying the feeling of his careful touch. He always touched you with such care, almost as if he was scared you would break under his touch.

"Hmm fine" You make a show of seeming disinterested, but both of you know this was exactly the outcome you'd hoped for.

"But we'd better get to it now, I don't want to be caught naked when your roommate comes home" A small kiss is planted on Alhaitham's jaw as you speak, making his lips turn up in a soft smile. When your words register in his mind, his face contorts into a slight frown. He quickly scoops you into his arms and stands up, not bothering to answer you but instead making a beeline for the bathroom as he clutched you to his chest.

I had a Loki/Sigyn fic I was writing years ago with my own concept for Sigyn’s characterization. It was fun but I don’t have much prolonged interest in the MCU anymore so I don’t know if I’ll get back in the mindset to continue it. Who knows, though? Maybe someday 😅

All aspects of a scene need to be balanced in order to craft a good story, in my personal opinion. I work very hard to write realistic dialogue and in-character actions. I really think I have a knack for characterization.

Finishing lengthier WIPs, despite all the best intentions 😅

-- What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Nuanced. It can be done correctly or incorrectly imo. I think it can be a wonderful way to express a more about a character, like using terms of endearment in the character’s native tongue, for example.

-- What was the first fandom you wrote for?

To my recollection either Kim Possible or The Incredibles when I was little. I didn’t really refer to it as “fanfic” back in the day, though

-- What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

For My Hero, I really want to write a dynamic between Toshinori and Moko Tamashi (the last woman All Might saved) not necessarily romantic; I haven’t decided on a direction for that one, only that I want them to interact.

For One Piece, I also want to write something for Sanji and Osome (the woman from Wano with the little mouse friend) — they were so cute and I liked her a lot!

Both of these are self-indulgent bc it’s one of my favorite characters and an underrated background character lol

I honestly don’t think I can choose a favorite, because all my fics are very special to me. Each one contains a piece of my soul so it makes it very difficult to pick just one. 😅

We’ve tried to answer as many common questions as possible below, but if there’s anything else you want to know, our ask box is open.

How do I post my work to the Tropetember AO3 Collection?

When you go to post a new work in AO3, there will be a section that says ‘Post to Collections / Challenges’. In the field next to it, type ‘Tropetember 2024’.

Do I have to post my work to AO3, or can I just post it to Tumblr, or a different site?

You can post your work wherever you like! As long as you make a submission through our Submissions form, or mention us @tropetember in your own post including either the link to wherever the fanwork is hosted, OR the text of the fic, we will post it.

You can also post only to the AO3 collection if you don’t want your work on Tumblr.

How do I tag/format my submission to the blog?

The most important thing is to check the box for #R-tropetember if your fic is NS/ FW (AO3 rating of M or E).

You can also choose from the other checkboxes to tag your work, but please make sure to use these responsibly and correctly! For example, don’t check all of the different types of media unless your work genuinely falls under these categories. Each submission needs to be individually checked and posted by the mods, so please don’t make our job harder - we’re already putting in many hours of work!

Incorrectly tagged works will have all nonessential tags removed and will therefore not show up in the search results.

Please make sure to include your fic’s TITLE, TROPE & SHIP (if applicable). For ship fics, the commonly accepted ship name (main ship only) should be included in brackets after the title, if you know it, and also the main trope/prompt(s) you used in the fic.  Any further courtesy or content warnings are appreciated, but not required.

What do I do if my submission isn’t posted?

Give us 24 hrs to post your submission - both of us work, so we aren’t always online. If it’s been longer than that, it’s either Tumblr screwiness or human error, so please do send us a message or ask so we can check we received it. We want to post all your submissions!

What kinds of fanworks are allowed?

Anything and everything! You can post fic, art, craft, fanvids, playlists, original music, audio, or whatever you like, as long as it fits a trope.

Can I skip some days?

Absolutely. You can do as many or as few days as you wish.

Why are there multiple prompts listed for each day? Do I have to combine them, or can I just pick a single one?

We listed various prompts for each day to give everyone as much choice as possible. You definitely aren’t expected to combine them (but you can if you want!).

Is Tropetember open to any fandom, character or ship?

Yes, it is! Feel free to create content for whichever fandom you want, including crossovers.

What if I miss the day for the prompt I want to do? Can I do the prompts out of order?

It doesn’t matter if you miss the specific day - please go ahead and write the prompt that caught your eye! Feel free to do any of the prompts on any day of September.

What if I’m late and don’t finish before the end of September?

We’ll be allowing late entries for one week after September 30th. If you miss that deadline, the AO3 collection will remain open until the one for next year is up and you can still post your works there.

Can the fills for the prompts be a new chapter of an existing fic, or part of an existing series?

Yes, that’s fine with us. Go ahead!

Can I combine the prompts with another event or bingo?

Absolutely!

Will you reblog NS/FW or controversial material?

Yes, in general we will. However, anything NS/FW or particularly controversial will be tagged with 'R-tropetember’ at the mods’ discretion. Please make sure to block this tag if you don’t want to see NS/FW content.

We will also attempt to tag works with any other relevant tags for blocking, including the ship name if possible. However, we won’t necessarily read all works ourselves, so we won’t be able to tag for all work content. Please heed the AO3 tags.

Why do you post and reply at strange times?

We don’t live in the USA, so our time zones are different. :) One of us is European and the other is Australian.

What’s with #27, “gay panic”? Isn’t that a discriminatory legal defence that allows for hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ people?

We (the mods) are both members of the LGBT+ community and we are very much aware of our gay history and the way this term has been used against people like ourselves. However, this phrase has a history of being thoroughly reclaimed by fanfic authors, with use dating back well prior to our own entry into fandom (and we’re old enough to remember the days of Livejournal, Wordpress and Fanfiction.net!) Feeling an initial sense of panic over one’s sexuality is something that is highly relatable to most people in the LGBTQIA+ community and that most of us have experienced, and the use of the phrase “Gay Panic” to describe a crisis of sexuality is part of our intertwined communities’ history.

Thanks to @randomfoggytiger for the tag. I didn’t do all of them, just the pertinent ones, and I modified those just to include ffnet as well. 

1. How many works do you have? 26 on AO3 (for my mature rated Spy Castle stuff); fanfiction.net has 278 Castle fics;and about 300ish archived at Gossamer for X-Files.

4. What are your top fics by kudos/reviews? The Return of Vulcan Simmons, Tempest (not a spy work!) on AO3; ffnet would be One Hundred Days of Summer (co-authored with SandianeCarter) and Dash It All.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yeah, I think if you take the time to contact me, you deserve the respect of hearing from me. It might not be a full-blown conversation, but I’ll do what I can with a full-time profession and a writing one as well. Also, suuuuper sorry, just discovered AO3 has an inbox. 300 days ago, some of you messaged me and I am just now seeing those. Lol. 

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I have a spy fic where the two of them are just so at odds, so grieving with and over each other… okay that’s most of them. But I try not to end on angst, as it’s supposed to be the journey not the destination. (Angst is a twisting of the heart, not a place where you stay. According to me.)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Dash series has the ‘happiest’ endings. Not because life is happy, but because they figured out how to create contentment within what they’d been given/dealt in life. And in ways other versions of the Castle characters hadn’t accomplished. They did the work.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Oh definitely. A while back, I turned off comments on tumblr for about a year as I processed and healed from some targeted attacks, and I can say that I came out more certain of myself and my writing. But I was also an adult who had not been forced to weather these attacks as a vulnerable 13 y-o on social media (as so many of you are unfortunately dealing with). I was able to detach, center myself once more, and rise above because I’d grown up IRL, so to speak. I have a faith in something bigger than me which, while it doesn’t look like what it did, has sustained me and given me the confidence to know my worth even as it spurs me to be/do better. 

9. Do you write smut. If so what kind? Oh definitely, lol. It’s on AO3. Usually I like to explore M/F with a third in there for kicks, as the concept of generosity and giving within the sexual relationship/experience is intriguing to me.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I objected to the term ‘stolen.’ I’ve had my fics, without my knowledge, posted elsewhere, translated without my knowledge, and changed to other fandom characters to be posted elsewhere. However! I’ve had loads of people ask me too, and I really appreciate being able to go visit them. (Stolen would indicate I somehow own these fanfictions, and I do not, as that would be a legally difficult hill to stand on. I also do not perceive collective fan art in this manner, because the world is all of ours.)

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Oh there’s a co-written story that me, carto, and muppet47 started and have NEVER finished. We all know Castle has to go to jail, but we can’t write it.

16. What are your writing strengths? Writing it the first time. Correctly. As in, it comes out the way it should or ought to or how I am seeing it in the moment. I have the right rhythm, I can spell and I have the grammar skills. My first draft is fast and good enough for submission. Of course, I go back and edit, and I have to, but I’m very blessed in not ever going through anything like writer’s block.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Secondary characters. I have a tendency for tunnel vision, where all I want to do is talk about and to and for the main characters. If they have friends or family, I barely include them. I can’t manage to care that they exist. But all of us live in a complex web of relationships and community; no one is alone. My last novel, Taste of Salt, was an concentrated effort to include as many other perspectives as possible, so it was told through the POVs of the two main characters and interspersed with flashback chapters from the POVs of their friends, family, coworkers, chance encounters, medical personnel, kids, support networks… there you go.You have to do the thing that’s hard. Write it out, over and over, keep practicing.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? Yeah, sometimes it becomes necessary for the character. But please keep it to a minimum (imo) as it detracts from the reader’s understanding and experience of reading. It ought to be rather easy to understand what the person is saying due to context or just the flow of the scene. If you’re writing in English, and you have a character visiting France, then obviously some of that ought to be in French, but after a while, you can indicate that the language is being used while writing it in English. I say this because most of you are fandom writers who are not writing for literary audiences; therefore, don’t ruin everyone’s fun my making it incomprehensible or inaccessible. Please.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written? Don’t ask me to choose between my children! I can tell you that Dash holds a special place in my heart due to the amount of readers who said it gave them understanding of their own sensory issues or their child’s autism, etc. Spy gave me one of my greatest friends, carto, who continues to love and support me and my writing.

Rules for Choices Horror Fest 2024

Hello everyone! We are one week away from Choices Horror Fest, so here are our rules for participating.

#1. Submissions can be anything you want it to be. Fanfiction, artwork, graphics, mood boards, animations, are all submissions you guys can submit. All pieces, no matter what they are will be acceptable, regardless as to length and/or style that it is presented in.

#2. Everything that is submitted must be tagged appropriately. This makes it easier when making an overall masterlist at the end of the day AND ensures that people avoid content that they do not wish to see; trigger warnings must be included and labelled correctly; these will also be posted next to the link to said piece so that people are warned beforehand. This applies to NSFW content also.

Please be sure to tag @choiceshorrorfest, @bloodboundismylife, @kinda-iconic to make sure that we don’t miss your submission. 

#3. ABSOLUTELY NO TERROR FEST SPOILERS! Some participants may not be VIP and are not caught up. Be considerate and don't post spoilers.

#4. Second-hand submissions are accepted, though we will need the original creator to come forward with confirmation that they want their piece to be a part of this appreciation week. If said confirmation or consent to share is not received, then we will not reblog it.

#5. Late submissions are always welcome! Life gets in the way, and we both have first-hand experience of that. It does not matter which day it is…it will be posted!

#6. We DO NOT tolerate abuse, bullying, homophobia, biphobia, acephobia, transphobia, or racism. If anyone is exhibiting this kind of behaviour, then it will be reported, and you will be blocked from accessing the blog. You will also be blocked from interacting with our personal blogs.

okay, so! we had a total of 5 votes in the past week, which was a little less than i’d hoped to get, but still definitely enough to work off of! the lovely @louistomlionson did a count & noted that we’ve had 50 fic fests this year when we usually have ~33, so it’s definitely understandable that by the last month of the year, many people are a bit burnt out by writing & fests! with all that being said, the winner was option C -- no deadline; make the fest ongoing.

Hello, @jump-wings! We're thrilled you're thinking about participating this year.

This fest is designed to be low-stakes and informal. There is no actual sign up process to participate.

Using the method of your choice (random generator, dart board, tea leaves, plain old brainstorming, et cetera) find a name and character concept for a new-to-you original character and a scenario to introduce them in. Then, write a short (1000-2000 words) snippet that introduces them inside the fandom property of your choice. The idea is to provide a compelling moment that makes the reader want to know more about this person.

The guiding principle is to do something new, and possibly challenging, and to serve as writing practice. It can also be a low-stakes excuse to try out a new character in a fandom you don't usually work in in a small and manageable way.

You may publish your finished piece on the site of your choice and provide a link to the blind-dates-fest blog. If the post is here on Tumblr, tag us in it so we can see it! You can look through the tag #fest submission here on this blog to get an idea of how these posts are usually formatted. (And please, this fest is pro read-more. Please use one if you are publishing here on tumblr.) On February 10th and throughout the Valentines Day Weekend, we will publish all of the submissions for you and your fellow participants to read and reblog.

Hi! This is my blog for rambling about vehicles (trains, cars, boats, etc.) and media with sentient vehicles. You can find reblogs, headcanons, and occasional fics.

I'm the author of two anonymous works on AO3 for The Railway Series, "For The (Living) Record" and "To The Surface." I have a new account there, anonymous_boxcar, to post the rest of my RWS / TTTE derivative works!

A general warning: While I may discuss children's media on this blog, I'm an adult who may also discuss heavy themes or events in said media or fan interpretations/derivative works. HD MPREG 2023—Submission Guidelines

Submission time is getting so close, and we're super excited. Massive thanks to all our wonderful participants this year for responding to the check-in emails we sent out. It was great to hear from all of you about how you're progressing.

The due date for submissions this year is 23 April 2023 which is about three weeks away, unless you've been provided an extension. We will check in with you all again about 10 days out from your due date to see how you're coming along. Our email and DM are always open if you need to chat with us.

POSTING YOUR WORK TO THE AO3 COLLECTION

Please avoid posting draft works to the collection. This can often lead to confusion when it's time to release them. Please preview your works on your personal AO3 prior to adding the Mod account as co-creator. Once the work has been submitted to the fest, no more changes are to be made without contacting the Mods to discuss.

Once you're happy that your work is displayed correctly, go ahead and add the Mod account and post the work to the collection. The collection link is here: 2023 Collection.

SO WHAT DO I DO?

Post to the Collection On or before 23 April 2023, go to the 2023 Collection and click Post to Collection. AO3 has further directions on making a post to a collection (ignore the challenge references). Tick the Add co-authors? box, and add the Mod ID hdmpregmod as the co-author. This ensures we can proofread all entries, keep the end-notes uniform and actually post the works as part of the fest. Once the fest concludes, the co-creator status will be removed, but the works will remain within the Collection.

Use Archive Warnings If your work contains graphic depictions of violence, major character death, rape/non-con, and/or under-age content, you must include these warnings in the header content, and utilise the appropriate archive warnings on AO3.

Add Content Tags You may add relevant AO3 tags to describe the content of your work. Readers may follow tags to assist them to find new works. Please refrain from excessive use of free-form tags that do not describe the work or its content (e.g. "omg I cannot deal"). Once the fest is finished, you may add these. Unless it is a secret or critical plot point, it is recommended to tag the pregnant character(s). This has been a polarising point in previous years, and it's best that readers are informed where possible. The Mods will review the content tags, and may make minor adjustments if deemed necessary. Larger changes will be made in consultation with the creator.

Add Creator's Notes This is a great place to include your prompt details and a shout-out to your beta readers and/or cheer-leaders. Please be sure to use initials if naming them would reveal who you are; and remember to update it after the fest reveals. The Mods will use the foot-notes to add some fest information.

Hit Submit! AO3 is sorted. No more changes are to be made to the work on AO3. The Mods will do their thing, once we know the work has arrived, so...

Create your Header Jump on into our Work Submission Form in AirTable for a glorious HTML-free header submission experience. You will need the 5-digit submission code that we gave you on your prompt allocation email, and the email address that we sent it to. You'll find it right here:

We are offering a submission form for automated headers again this year. When it's time to submit your creation, you'll need this code: [your unique code here] Make sure you don't lose it!

The form will ask you a few questions about the work, and most stuff you can copy and paste from AO3. If you feel like kicking it old-school you can also email your HTML header details using the form(s) below to the Mods.

Wait, Anticipate, Enjoy Your submitted work(s) will be listed as Unrevealed Mystery Works in the Collection. Nobody but you and the Mods will be able to see the entry before its posting date in the fest. At posting time, the Mods will update the date of the work so that it receives maximum exposure. Please do not change it again. All creators will appear as Anonymous until the fest is revealed. While hype is definitely welcomed and encouraged; it is poor form to de-anon works before a fest is revealed. Do not cross-post, reply to AO3-comments, or otherwise claim ownership of an anonymous work until after 18 June 2023. It's only a few weeks, just be patient.

It's probably more messy than you realize, but I'm glad I've managed a satisfying system to deal with everything but let's demystify some stuff

To sum it up :

- Google form is your friend here, especially if you're planning for a big bracket (else paper and pen also works well from what I've seen)

- The first thing you do is making a copy of your Google Sheet. That way if you mess up one / you erase info to make it lighter on the eyes you still have a not modified one with everything in it you can copy infinitely. Give each file names different enough you don't risk to confuse them

- Actually the first thing you should do could be trying to use the google form and check if your answers appear correctly on the sheet

- Colorcode. This one I learnt from watching other poll runners. Other poll runners often have great ideas which will help you out with a lot of stuff

The more submissions you got, the more colors you'd have to settle for. Use distincts colors, not just shades of one. And write them down at first, you'll get better at reminding them the more you use them

Here's my code but it's not necessarily better than another

(It actually has suggestions to up to 16 submissions but I stopped respecting it properly over 8 submissions. Not many characters have more so I just use any color I know I'm not using for the others randomly)

- Colorcode more. I have two systems with colors.

I use the left column as such : untouched for the ones that hadn't been put through a bracket, blue for the ones currently in the bracket, red for the ones that won't be in the main bracket, green for the ones accepted into the main bracket. I erased the dates when there were several submissions for easier reading

- Actually I have another colorcoded system. Names written in red are ones I'm not certain what to do about. I use the dilemmas tag for those.

- Dates in bold means the character's already in my @flowerycharacterslist (that's a suggestions list)

- If a red name is barred and the date was erased, it was voted against on the blog.

- Rename things when needed. For example when you have many submissions for the same fandom and they keep intertwining (ie : a submission for Daisy is followed by one for Daisy too but they're separated by a submission for Bluebear), you can just do ridiculous stuff like that to have them in the right order :

I'm organizing my sheet per media (except when checking for doubles, like Susan Pevensie (Narnia) and Susan Pevensie (Chronicles of Narnia) to give them the same fandom name) and have to do similar stuff often enough

- Keep track of what you're doing. The earlier you're up to date from the start, the easier it is afterward. I started ordering things when I had a few hundreds' submissions I think and needed half a day but earlier would probably not hurt if organization isn't really your thing

- Remember that you can ask for help. To other poll runners, yes, since many will try to help, but also to your followers. You don't know if a character belong ? Make a poll so people can vote

- Don't worry about making mistakes. Do your best to be respectful and understanding and keep a safe place for your followers (basically, block anyone sounding threatening/discriminatory) and you'll be okay. Nobody worth your time will jump at your throat for setting the wrong time limit or picking up the wrong image

- Relax. You're supposed to enjoy this too
