I only got it this afternoon so have only read the (quite long?) excerpt available online and pages I came across while flipping through, but everything I've read so far is really interesting and well-written. If you're interested, it's promoted on the blog of @pumpkinpaix, where there are also chapter spotlights with comments from authors of each paper/chapter about them and about MDZS in general (which is how I found out about it, one came up in tumblr's 'based on this tag you follow...' recommendation), as well as FAQs (including where to buy it, though I did link that at the start). Alternatively, all posts about it are in the tag #catching chen qing ling!

I really recommend it, especially if content about MDZS interests you! and I promise I haven't been told to advertise this it's just something so so cool... a collection of academic work about MY FAVOURITE BOOK... and I know people do follow me for meta/analysis so this might be the sort of thing people looking at this blog will be interested in..?

2024 Art Summary

Today was a great year for my art. It had some ups and downs in my opinion but I'm really proud where my style has ended up.

Current favourite song: So I fell down a TXT FreeFall rabbit hole; fell in love with Skipping Stones, which then led me to the artist who created that song, Hanroro, and am now obsessed with one of her other songs, "Even if you leave,". Her tone, mood, just everything. Obsessed.

Currently reading: These days I only read fanfic and nonfic. Oh and the Batman: Wayne Family Adventures webtoon lolol Shoutout to Yeaka on A03 who (among other things) writes pitch-perfect Ustukushii Kare ficlets that get me through the day; here's the one I read most recently.

Currently watching: lol here we go (in no particular order but semi-ranked in terms of how much space they are taking up in my brain?):

Shadow the Series: binged all 7 eps yesterday, eagerly awaiting the back half!

I Feel You Linger in the Air: finale this week; this one was really hard for me to watch at first due to the the sexual assaults in the first four episodes, but it's a really gorgeous piece of work and I'm glad I stuck with it (I did have a real moment to myself where I thought if this pattern was going to continue I would have to drop it, but luckily it did not keep going). There are a few powerful scenes that I've written about separately that will live rent-free in my head.

Kimi ni wa todokanai / I cannot reach you / won't get through to you: I'm watching this one grey thanks to the incredible sub work by @lurkingteapot (follow @kiminaisubs!) and am absolutely loving it. These are such wonderful characters. It's so interesting to be watching this at the same time as the next one, because the similarities and differences make comparing the two a richer experience watching both!

Kimi to nara koi wo shite mite mo / If it's with you: Amane has rocketed up to one of my favourite characters of all time. Love how the family stuff is integrated into this show. I think I actually like this show more than I cannot reach you, but I've been providing the minimal insight I can into drafts of the subs for the other show so have been thinking about it more.

One Room Angel: very excited for this one, the humour is pitch-perfect and the themes are my cup of tea. I love supernatural stuff, and mysteries especially around supernatural mechanics, and psychology, and self esteem issues. and all that good stuff.

Kinou nani tabeta / What Did You Eat Yesterday?: Love that this show has retained the heart and quality of the previous work. Loving this a lot. It's not higher on the list only because I don't need to think about it a lot, it's SO legible, and so well done.

Mr Cinderella 2: I am having a FANTASTIC time with this show lol it is such a pulp; there is high drama, paranormal elements (rituals and potions), insidious psychological tricks, and really solid relationship writing. This show starts with the main couple together, and shows how they deal with all of these external forces--which works for me in a way it doesn't with Kiseki below because their response as a couple at first is to unite and shore up; they support one another through it. It's when they start trying to handle things on their own (and this is justified by the narrative) that things fall apart.

Kiseki: Dear to Me: Like everyone else, I have fallen in love with Ai Di the murder kitten. I think the mains aren't resonating with me as much because their problems are all external rather than internal, and they keep trying to handle them individually (i.e. without ever working as a couple to face these issues), but they are also very pretty and I appreciate all the lap-sitting.

Absolute Zero: Honestly I now watch this show with annoyance like "What are you doing with this scene, New Siwaj? Why?". The mechanics of the show are still interesting but I am mad at it so I now approach those questions with annoyance rather than interest lol

Venus in the Sky: I liked this one way more than I thought I would; it's miles better than Check Out and far more coherent. It's a decent pulp!

My Universe: I'm a bit behind on this one but mostly caught up now (one story behind); the quality of these stories varies wildly but it's an interesting short story format! I'm keeping track of thoughts for all of the stories and will do a post when I'm done if anyone wants to know which are worth watching (since they all stand alone)

My Dear Gangster Oppa: This just got started; the first episode was pretty! I think it's going to be a solid and enjoyable pulp lol

You Are Mine: This one I am not enjoying. Too much boss-using-his-powers-over-his-subordinate-to-force-proximity-and-not-actually-communicating, and the women pushing this male secretary at his boss as fodder really sits wrong with me.

Dangerous Romance: I have very little sympathy for the rich boy who doesn't think through the consequences of his actions or the people who enable him, and I'm annoyed that the Sailom character we got at the beginning of the series who was self-aware, confident, clever, and had his priorities straight seems to have disappeared. There is no internal consistency in this show.

Taskmaster series 16: I love this dorky show from England lol comedians are given absurd tasks and then are judged; it's got a very strong undertone-turned-overtone of kink, and yet is family-friendly, and I find that fascinating. What a good show lol

Current favourite character: HMMMM. Amane from If It's With You comes first to mind, to be honest. He's gay, he fucks, he has self esteem issues but he's working on them, he's brave enough to be honest to his crush even though he's been burned before, and he asks for what he really wants, and then hold hope that he might actually get it. And his behaviour around his crush is relatably cringe. I LOVE HIM. [@wen-kexing-apologist wrote this before I saw yours but YES, sad boy hiding behind happiness is THE BEST]

Current WIP: I have 4 asks that I have in my drafts that I owe @wen-kexing-apologist, @mynameisnotthepoint (this wasn't really an ask per se but it was an excuse to gush so I'm taking it), @wanderlust-in-my-soul, and @waitmyturtles. I have been working on all of them and do still plan on answering them! I also have a draft re: Hidden Agenda the novel vs the show that I realllllly need to just stop fussing with and post.

OLYMPIA

canvas: does your oc have any scars, piercings, tattoos, or other markings? do they display or cover them up at all?

olympia doesn't have any tattoos or overly noticeable markings; she also has fairly tame piercings (just a few in the lobe of each ear, and one small piercing near the tip of her right ear so she can wear a chain between them).

she has scars though. her healing magic has swept most of her small injuries away, leaving the faintest lines or marks here and there. there's a cruel line running from the bottom of her throat across her clavicle from a necromancer's blade. olympia's back is the worst of her scarring; she has burns pressed onto her shoulder blades, almost a mockery of wings, from when nere shoved her into the lava at grymforge. the lava bled through her armour and clothes, and the only thing that saved the rest of her from melting away was lathander's holy light (and that she's resistant to fire). the scars never healed quite right though.

texture: does your oc favor any specific kinds of cloth or textures? is there anything they can't wear or don't like? what sort of fabrics do they prefer?

she will happily wear most things, but she definitely has a preference for soft materials. a light cotton, smooth silk or cheesecloth are probably her favourites. she also adores the look of lace, but it tends to make her itch a little if there's no material between the lace and her bare skin. she still owns a set of lace lingerie though.

ISADORA

stature: what's your oc's body type? how tall are they? do they wear clothing to accentuate their look or do they try to mask it?

isadora is short, around 5'4, and has always had a fairly standard hourglass physique. she doesn't have much muscule mass, especially when she's first snatched by the nautiloid, and has never been very physically strong. she's built for dexterity or managing her smuggling business behind closed doors. she can and will use her womanly assets to her advantage if needed, and actually quite likes corsets and dresses, but after being quietly resented by her parents for her appearance since she was born, isa's also very conscious that she's doesn't look Normal (or at least, doesn't look 'normal' to her very human parents). still, she stopped trying to hide her tiefling features (eg., fangs, the ridges along her skin, horns, tail) a long time ago out of spite ... it's a work in progress.

armor: what kind of armor does your oc wear? is it well kept? bonus: where does it come from? is there a story behind it?

she wears light armour, but it's mostly focused on protecting her vitals (namely, her chest area) over anything else. she's not built to wear anything overly heavy or with high coverage. mostly, she wears skirts or dresses that offer good freedom of movement, with a corset-style chest armour piece, a thick belt to carry her weapon/potions, sturdy travelling boots, and maybe a cloak if the weather's chilly (think jester's canon look from a style perspective). it won't protect her against intense, but is better than wearing No armour. the armour itself doesn't have any sentimental value, and the individual items will change in and out as things wear and tear.

CRESSIDA

arms: does your oc have any weapons? what weapons do they carry, and how do they wear them when they're not fighting?

cress is fairly proficient in daggers, hand axes, and shortswords. while she tends to rely on her magic for a lot of combat, she also enjoys close-quarters weapons, has always liked being inches away as she watches the life leave someone's eyes, has always liked the feel of hot blood on her hands. bhaal and the church always encouraged a more hands-on approach as well. post-game, when she's been abandoned by her patron and father and with her magic ripped away, cress is somewhat thankful for the training.

change: has your oc ever drastically changed their appearance? significant haircuts, big tattoos, complete wardrobe swap, etc? why? how do they feel about the change?

she doesn't remember anything of that sort prior to the game, although given the length of her hair by that stage, she doubts there was anything so drastic in her past. it's not of her own choice, but after bhaal's influence is torn from her, her eyes slowly shift from red to silver over the course of a few weeks. she also chops off most of her hair into a blunt bob (with shadowheart's help). cress insists it's just to lighten the load on her neck, but in reality it reminds her too much of orin and the splash of bood dripping from its ends. she wants something fresh and new, and not crusted with crimson.

CALANTHA

roots: is your oc's look inspired by any specific style of clothing or fashion trend? what are the roots and/or inspiration for their look?

cal, predictably, dresses kind of like a pirate. or at least, like someone who grew up on a sailing boat, stitching her own clothes and dressing for practicality over fashion. a lot of her look is inspired by her captain and father figure, dominic - the half orc would take her shopping in ports when she was barely taller than his knee, and would always let her pick out the most outlandish of things. she always dresses in his ship's colours of teal and brown, whether consciously or not, and her necklace was a gift from him (it's a shark's tooth).

hair: how does your oc wear their hair? does it have some kind of meaning?

her hair is usually in a messy pixie cut or very short bob, depending on the week. she started wearing it short fairly young, when having long hair was both impractical for swining between rigging and hard to keep looking nice when constantly filled with salt and sea spray. it's been so long that she's now used to having it short. it also provides her a certain amount of anonymity when it came to her more criminal activities; it's amazing how many people would mistake her for a young urchin boy, especially when she was swallowed in her large sailor's jacket.

...I won't lie, I'd expected a result like this for Revka more than myself. But at the same time and while not wanting to be too far up my own ass - I think I get it? Being a mom will do that to you. I know this talks about a partner, but could see it meaning familial or platonic love as well. If I'm gonna get offed in a horror movie, I'd chose to do it helping someone I love - especially kiddo - get somewhere they'll be sure to survive. (And hey, might as well do it going down swinging and a little drunk, lol.)

I'm going to throw a stone at a hornet's nest and say that the TERFs who like to claim Alison Bechdel as one of their own lack basic reading comprehension—and worse still, they lack shame.

There's an actual, honest-to-goodness, authentic, genuine strip of Dykes to Watch Out For in which Mo gets called out for her transphobia when she whines about sharing a restroom with a trans woman. Moreover, she then becomes the victim of bathroom policing herself, because butch women don't fit the cis-hetero-normative mold. It's all right there in the text, plain as day.

Just because Bechdel is a butch lesbian, and prefers that identity over "trans man" or "nonbinary," doesn't mean that she rejects the theory and rhetoric that produced those labels. That's child logic.

Cherry-picking her work to support their bigotry, just so they can claim lineage from a distinguished queer writer, is not only stupid and easily debunked, but it's deeply insulting. It betrays how little TERFs actually care about LGBTQ rights, feminism, or literature.

Any so-called "radfems" interacting with this post will be blocked—thereby cleaning up the "Alison Bechdel" tag for my browsing, so I don't have to wade through a bunch of bigotry every time I scroll through it. Thank you in advance. ❤️
