Cheating At Bingo and Other Christmas Traditions: Max's Version

He's hard to talk to; his presence – despite it being his home and his grandmother – feels like a disturbance.

Which is rude, Max thinks as he climbs the ladder for the final time. Max can appreciate that Charles is probably in a weird spot – Max is, too. He's been helping Celeste for what feels like ages at this point, helping all the neighbors. It's part of his routine, it's something that makes him feel… he's not sure.

Wanted isn't quite the right word.

But Charles is a confusing wrench in that, someone that knows every detail of the neighborhood better, grew up in it, with it. And Max would like to talk with him, get to know him, he's just hard to read. He's constantly bristled, as if every time Max reaches a fork in the conversational road, he chooses the wrong one.

But they're working together on this, hanging up Celeste's lights.

Maybe that's a step, doing the same thing, being in the same space. A step towards what, Max isn't entirely certain, but it's a step that his body yearns for.

They move to the end of the driveway in silence, just like they always seem to be coated in silence; bodies not used to standing next to each other, soft parts of them not used to listening.

They'd done good work together, Max can't help but think – tilting his head back to take in the full extent of their efforts. They made quick time; Charles was a more competent helper than some of his actions would indicate. Max opens his mouth to say as much, when Charles – confusingly – speaks first.

"She thinks rainbow lights ‘look more American’." He says, tone unlike what Max has ever heard.

Max turns to look at him, multi-colored lights reflecting against his fair skin, glimmering in Charles's eyes. They're brighter than usual, like the cold has made him tear up; his nose is red, too, cheeks pink. The corner of Charles's lips twitch, almost like he can't decide if he wants to smile or frown, and Max can't ignore the overwhelming urge to fix it. Somehow.

Max blinks, a little stunned. His heart rate picks up. "I suits her, I think."

He looks back at the house before Charles catches him staring. It suits you, is what he meant to say – the words hot and confusing on his tongue.

What… what had he meant by that? Wanted to mean by that?

"Celeste, she’s…” He carries on like he hadn't thought anything at all, looking at the lights they hung together instead. “She likes it to feel like home, doesn’t she?"

And if home for Celeste meant Charles, the maybe there was something to that. Something Max still needs to figure out.

Yes & no. Ruby’s exaggerates, but it is certainly frowned upon. I don’t think anyone cares enough to actually reprimand the mentors/escorts for sleeping around, so long as it doesn’t interfere with duties. Kind of like office rules. On paper it’s not allowed, but it’s more like - don’t ask don’t tell, y’know?

But Ruby would not be able to handle the gossip or smug stares from her peers if they found out. She is a professional! She’s got a reputation to uphold! Oh, it would just be the talk of the Capitol.

She’s got a hot blush on her cheeks for dayyys after, and she can’t even look John in the eye.

John’s not making it easy on her, either. Teasing her at every opportunity so he can watch her stutter through exceptionally high-pitched objections. Getting a rouse out of her is one of his favorite time-passers.

Price will even try to fluster her with low spun dirty talk and lingering touches, reveling in the way she squeals and practically runs from him.

He’ll laugh, a rarity - a hearty, genuine laugh from deep in his gut as he watches her clear the room, grumbling unhappily all of the way.

(Ruby loves it, but she could never admit it. Instead she’ll lock herself in her room and ride her fingers to the tune of Price’s vulgar tongue and brute manhandling, stifling her noisy moans and squeaks).

buddy i look up to everyone in my life i am but a mere 5'3" hahaha but fr? and this is gonna be so fucking cheesy but i don't care: you. you and your bravery and resilience and optimism. and yes i am aware there are many days where you "don't wanna" and you're not brave and you just wanna have sad floor time. but the fact that these days happen but you willingly choose to pick yourself up over and over again is inspiring. especially with your words of advice often hiding in jokes, but the messages still stands. you actively make me want to be a better version of myself <3

hold on to whatever is the closest thing next to you cuz you're not gonna believe this.... i don't have one :) i just don't have strong opinions on movies. i guess the closest answer i can give for this is my comfort movie, which is '50 First Dates' !

59: what's the happiest day of your life you've ever had?

I already said the one with dad and the parked car listening to music, so my runner up for 'happiest day' would be: OOOUUUU there was one day when i took the puppo to the vet to get some vaccines, afterwards we parked in my self proclaimed spot which is this (mostly) empty and narrow road that was next to a field of cows!!! we walked for a little bit but it started to rain and i didn't want to go home yet so we stayed in the car listening to music, he got treats, i got biscuits and we stayed there having a fun little date!! My current favourite wip is very little more than a concept at the moment, which is a Lestappen fic (no surprises lol) that I think was inspired by a tweet or a tumblr post. The secondary inspiration that solidified the concept/plot was the recent press conference when our Charlie was high out of his mind on painkillers and kept giggling and chatting with Max.

It stems from them being much younger and still karting, and one thing leads to another and they kiss. And promptly never speak of it again. Buuuut they both think of it all the time. As they grow up, they encounter some deja vu and find themselves kissing again and, shock!, it’s just as good as they remembered and more.

(Answering about this actually helped me formulate a lot of the background plot so thank you!!)

HOWEVER I also want an excuse to post this excerpt from a separate Landoscar wip, just bc I like it :’) I’ll put it under a cut so it doesn’t clog anyone’s dash!

Ten!

Shit. Lando shoved his way out of the kitchen he had found himself in, scanning every face for the soft cheekbones or warm brown eyes he had come to recognise.

Nine!

A girl Lando had definitely hooked up with before caught his arm, and tried to pull him in another direction, but he brushed her off.

Eight! Seven! Six!

Lando set his half-finished drink down and rubbed at his eyes. He was determined not to let Oscar go into 2023 alone among strangers. He just had to find him first.

Five!

Oscar wasn’t in the bathroom, or the one bedroom Lando hazarded a peek into.

Four!

One job, Lando. One job. Keep Oscar safe while showing him a good time. And, somehow, he had managed to lose him at the most crucial time of the party.

Three!

Lando burst out of the apartment and onto the balcony, where only a few partygoers were stood. The night was cool, but not unbearable, though Lando shivered a little as he stepped outside.

Two!

There he was. Thank God. Lando spied the sandy blond wave of hair and crisp white shirt, stood right by the railing, gazing out over the city. He rushed over to Oscar, and put his hand on his arm, making Oscar jump.

One!

The crowd around them erupted into cheers, popping open champagne and kissing their other halves. Without thinking twice, Lando grabbed Oscar by the back of the neck and kissed him, hard. He felt Oscar tense up for just a moment - just long enough for him to panic and regret the risky manoeuvre. But, milliseconds later, Oscar’s hands found their way to Lando’s waist, and he was kissing him back. The fireworks exploding across the city around them echoed the fireworks in Lando’s mind. When they finally broke apart to breathe, Lando grinned dopily at Oscar.

“Happy New Year, new teamie.” Lando said, almost into Oscar’s mouth, before kissing him again.

okok so I actually haven’t completely finished it yet, I have two episodes to go!! generally so far I think it’s not bad? like, I’m enjoying it even though it’s not as good as it could be. I think they did the casting really well (gordon is literally aang irl) as well as the visuals/costume/the general look of it

however 🤓☝️ I don’t think they did the characterisation very well … the majority of the time the characters feel kind of dry, when in the original they’re so fun!!!!! like I swear they stripped away sokka and katara’s entire personality 🤨 and wdym zuko has not mentioned his honour once 🤨 also the way they cut so many “filler” episodes … likeee give us some fun episodes please!!! overall I think they just tried to make it way too serious .. they stripped away all the fun! and like yeah it can be serious and mature but why not have both!!!

but yes I’m still enjoying it, despite it being not as good as I’d hoped (which is probably partly nostalgia driven). the episode with zuko’s backstory made me cry lolzies. and I’m excited for the next seasons!!!!!! especially zuko’s redemption arc because dallas is going to look so incredibly scrumptious with the grown out emo boy hair 😁😁😁 anyways this was way longer than it needed to be, shutting up now xxx

Hmm...I usually celebrate by closing my computer or iPad, stepping away from social media and taking a long walk. I am very (very) hard on myself, and often think I don't deserve any credit or praise, so doing that is a challenge. But I'm trying to be better!

💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

Honestly, I didn't think Make.Believe, would be the hit that it was. (There's that low self esteem talking again.) I had had it in my drafts for months, but decided to publish it on a whim. Part 1 is now at almost 1k notes, which is crazy to me! I am a little sad that Part 2 or 3 didn't do as well, but overall I'm happy with the series.
