a ship everyone in the fandom you’re in loves, but you can’t stand?

it's not necessarily the ship as such, it's how it's talked about. i'm not going to go into a lengthy thing, but basically, i don't think there's inherent progressive value in the fiyeraba ship. (it could most certainly be imbued with progressive value through reinterpretation, which i have seen writers on here successfully do.) i think it became a big thing in the musical because of a failure of imagination on the part of the adaptors, who couldn't conceive of telling a woman's story without centering a heterosexual "love of her life" tale in it (which the fiyeraba relationship definitely is not in the books), and pretending that having a man and a woman fall in love in fiction is so incredibly radical is just... well... it's disingenuous.

yes. on an old blog, i got super drunk one night and posted something about men that was not very nice. tumblr quickly let me know that i had committed the most vile and heinous of crimes, for which i would be roundly punished. i then went on to make spiteful posts about this periodically, with stuff like "and for those who think activism is making posts on tumblr..." etc. right now i try not to even touch such subjects except in the chillest and remotest of ways, not because i think anything i did was particularly wrong, but because i don't need that stress in my life anymore.

there's some stuff i could say but i think it all boils mostly down to: i really, really, really wish people would actually, deeply, and seriously read these days. so much of the stuff i disagree with, find frustrating or angering, etc. derives from people not reading deeply or critically, and very often from people straight out not understanding what they're reading.

i'll give an example. there are some semi-viral posts going around about how elphaba is "canonically intersex" in wicked the novel. i am here to tell you: no. the text makes it explicit, within a sentence, that what appears to be ambiguous genitalia is a bit of biological tissue from elphaba's birth, which a character rubs away, showing that she has a factory standard vulva, which is enough for her in this context as well as in our world for her to be assigned female and considered perisex.

you can make an argument from the text that elphaba might be interpreted as intersex or is meant to embody characteristics assigned to intersex characters in fiction, such as gendered ambiguity and "straddling two worlds" (in fact, given the kumbric witch image that recurs throughout the novel and its identification with elphaba, there is MORE than enough textual evidence for this); you can also write elphaba in the rpc and have her be intersex as your personal interpretation of the character. but you cannot say that the text STATES she is intersex. it states the exact opposite... which you would know if you actually read and took the time to understand the book.

(another thing i see cited as evidence is elphaba having a "shadow" near her groin, implied to be a scar, as an adult, and arguing from this + her unwillingness to be touched by hands below the waist that this means she has undergone reassignment surgery and this means she is factually intersex. the opinion in the wicked fandom about 15 years ago was that this is actually textual evidence she had been a victim of rape. i am not saying either interpretation is wrong; i am saying that both of these are not in the text, and therefore not canon.)

he is so so SO boyfie! he'd be so cute trying to keep it all a secret, blaming all his new scrapes and bruises on skateboarding when in reality, he got it from fighting curses all day long. he'd come home to you, tired and exhausted from the day, and you'd let him rest his head on your lap while you run your fingers through his hair, massaging his scalp. he finds this very soothing and relaxing!

he's so torn right before shibuya, seriously considering running away together somewhere overseas where no one will ever bother the two of you. but then he remembers all his friends willing to fight for the sake of humanity and ultimately decides to go. and when it's over, the pain of losing his friends and losing his eye is slightly dulled because he's lucky enough to come back home to you. 😭

Maru actually doesn't have a favourite city-state.

Each of them tends to have one thing that really appeals to him and one thing that really puts him off.

If he could have the sun and the heat of Ul'dah and Thanalan, the diversity and fishing of Limsa Lominsa, the warmth of welcome from certain denizens of Ishgard and the hot springs and architecture of Kugane, if such a place existed he'd live there.

If he had to pick just one, he'd probably go with Kugane as it would tick the most boxes for him. He'd probably not live there however, given how out-of-the-way it would be. He'd get lonely out there on his own. Having a private estate to visit and stay in while he's out there for the occasional visit would be a happy medium (and it's precisely why he has one such private estate in Shirogane).

okay so, everyone is always telling buck that eddie has a resting bitch face, right? and buck is so so so adamant that he doesn’t and he fights everyone on it. he really can’t understand what people mean. he’s baffled when chimney makes jokes about eddie scaring patients with his stony expression. he is so confused when maddie tells him she was a bit intimated by eddie before they ever talked. buck just can’t believe that this is something people think.

until one day hen shows buck a video of eddie just chilling at the station while reading a magazine. and he looks so serious, so frowny. a little bitchy if buck is being totally honest. and then, in the video, buck walks up the stairs and as soon as eddie sees him he lights up. suddenly he’s all sunshine and rainbows. he’s all smiley and he just looks so soft.

and that’s how buck finds out that eddie does have a resting bitch face but buck never sees it because eddie always looks ecstatic when buck is near.

So, there must be a ton of people thirsting over him on the internet. Fancams, edits, fanfics and imagines ("kidnapped with Bruce Wayne 😍 by a Gotham rogue"), the whole charade!

And anytime one of the batkids stumbles on a thirst post, they have the most dramatic disgusted reaction, loudly gagging, before sending the link to the batkids chat, because if they must suffer, then they should all suffer. Clicking on a link in this groupchat is like playing russian roulette, and getting rickrolled is a good ending.

i got my isbn today for the book. 8 months to go. my mom and i were talking about what the next steps are. i was eating trail mix, standing on one foot, phone tucked into my ear.

"yeah," i said. "the problem is that tumblr as a market is like, not something that can be studied." there's this weird wave of nostalgia and affection for this place that came up over me: how lovely we avoid consumerism. okay, it sucks as a creator. but also? keep stickin' it to 'em.

my mother made the sound at the back of her throat that i also make, the one that means i've got an idea. "you should figure out some kind of reward for presale amounts. maybe you give out poems or a mug or a signed book or something. would your followers like that?" my mother is sweet, and kind, and i have no idea how to explain on this website you can buy someone crabs.

i put more m&ms down the hatch. i had to speak through peanuts and almonds. "if it passes 25 thousand i will print the book out in its entirety and eat it live on camera."

"oh god. no, you don't have to do that." she was anguished. "just tell them that you'd love them to read it, and that they've inspired you to write. you got started on that site, and they helped you keep going. raquel, you love these people. the community? you talk all the time about the other writers and artists and whatever else. tell them that you're hoping for their support, they'll come through."

"no," i assured her. i discovered i had dropped an m&m, but an ant had already found it, so it belonged to him now. i will let his little life have a surprise blue treasure in it, too. "i'm gonna fuckin' eat the book."
