First off, I’m so flattered that you would even ask. I’ve never had someone send me a request before 🫣 As luck would have it, I just so happened to have the perfect word prompt for this.

Angst, Hurt/comfort, Protective JJ.

Finding Kiara face down on the ground and unconscious has to be the scariest moment of JJ's life.

He sprints towards her as fast as his legs can carry him, shouting her name in a blind panic, before collapsing on his knees at her side. As he pulls her into his arms, he's terrified of what he might see. He doesn't know the extent of her injuries or even if she was still alive.

The possibility turns his blood cold.

The first thing he notices is bright red oozing from a shallow gash on her left temple. The injury is reminiscent of JJ's run-in with the blunt end of a machete a few years ago. She's got some bruising on her face and right arm, perhaps from the fall, but other than that, externally, he couldn't locate any other injuries.

He cradles her limp body to his, shaky, unsure fingers lightly smacking her cheek, then growing in force the longer she doesn't react. "Kie, wake up! C'mon, you gotta wake up! Kiara!"

The fear constricts his chest like a vice, consuming every fibre of his being. The thought of living a single day without her is a fate worse than death. His fingers are still frantic as he searches for a pulse. Tears of relief flood his eyes when he finds one.

JJ chokes on a watery laugh before carefully brushing away the curls stuck to her forehead and pressing a kiss to her brow.

"You're okay. You're gonna be fine," he whispers, a reassurance more to himself than her. But saying the words out loud fills him with renewed vigor. Those treasure-hunting thugs were still hot on their trail, and JJ couldn't protect them both out in the open like this.

It was clear that one of their pursuers had knocked her out. If JJ had to make an educated guess, he'd say she'd been pistol-whipped. He's not sure why they let her live, and he doesn't care about their reasoning. All that matters now is getting her somewhere safe where he can treat her wound.

As carefully as he can, JJ hoists Kiara up into his arms bridal style and spins in place, surveying their surroundings and searching for any possible shelter.

His heart's beating so fast he's sure it's about to give up on him, but then Kiara begins to stir in his arms, her soft, groggy voice asking for him, and it grounds him. He touches his lips to her hairline, soothing her with a promise: "I got you, baby. I got you."

Seconds later, he spots their escape and takes off running.
