and guys my age stop by to tell me I remind them of their aunt, of their grandmother. This is a compliment and I take it as such. They confess to having tried crochet once, and I smile. They get back in line for the bathroom.

I'm knitting in the corner at a party and a queer woman sits on the floor next to me, arranges her skirt, and smiles up at me. (I try not to blush.) She asks me all the questions on her mind about my craft and I answer them, hands still moving. We swap yarn sources. She doesn't stay, but she knows where to find me.

I'm knitting in the corner at a party and everyone knows where to find me when they need a minute, when socializing is too much and the music is too loud and they need to catch their breath. They pretend to be checking in on me, which is sweet, but I can see the relief in their eyes the moment they stop performing for a house full of people. They sit down and tell me things and all the while they never take their eyes off my hands.

The party has wound down and I'm still knitting and the hosts, two guys in their twenties, thank me for "helping to curate the vibe." I had no idea that's what I was doing. I leave the party having forgotten to drink anything and without that woman's number but with many rows added to my top-down raglan sweater. I call it a night, and a good one.

Yandere host~ Who would ignore his clients and stare at you from across the room with jealous eyes burning holes into the people that would host you.

Yandere host~ Who asks your friend everything about you which makes the whole thing about you not her.

Yandere host~ Who genuinely falls in love with you after hearing more and more about you.

Yandere host~ Who constantly asks you out and gets pouty and sulky every time you reject him only to ask you again the next day.

Yandere host~ Who one by one "gets rid of" all the other hosts so you'll have no choice but to let him host you.

Yandere host ~ Who's the definition of clingy and loves your personal space and is the equivalent to a puppy when you're around.

Yandere host~ Who always slips something into your tea and you always wake up in his embrace or with marks on your neck and chest (or both more often then not).

“You coming this weekend?”

It comes out casual, as you tug the white tee over your head. Your shift at the bar starts in an hour. Just enough time to walk home, grab your shit.

You’ll shower, after.

Maybe it’s a little bit pathetic, but you like the way his cologne clings to you. The reminder in the way he’s left a slick mess between your thighs, even after the wobbly feeling in your legs fade. It’s enough.

Joel’s eyes linger. Sweeping over the tight pull of your shirt across your chest, before they flick up.

“Maybe.” He hedges. A lift of his bare shoulder, as the teal polo slips back on.

The same one he was wearing this morning for tee time. The snag of his eyes even then, when you had waved both him and your father off for their monthly game.

Falling together in the afternoon. No more than a few minutes passing between the time you twisted open his front door, and he kicked the bedroom door shut behind.

It’s not the first time. Won’t be the last, not with the way his hands had wandered. The rough “fuckin’ need you, sweetheart” that had slipped from him, when he bent you over the bed.

Shoes and socks still on, shorts twisted around your thighs.

Maybe he’ll be at the dinner. Maybe he’ll keep his hands to himself. Maybe you won’t end up back here later, in the same summer dress that your mother will say you look so nice in.

Maybe you’ll do your best not to imagine another life - one where you don’t have to hide the way your foot brushes his beneath the table. One where he drives you over to dinner himself, lets you fiddle with the dials in his old truck until you find the station that plays your song.

It’s a dream you push down. Feelings are a lot of work, don’t have time for that right now. And like you said - it’s enough.

It’s enough that you know his maybe means yes.

That it’s never enough, these moments that you steal. Half-dressed, with hurried movements and panting breath, leaving you to wear him for longer than he’s been in you.

Joel’s footsteps follow yours as he walks you to the back door. Easy to slip down the alley between the houses then. Thick trees in the yard for cover.

“You got plans after work?”

It follows you down the steps. A verbal touch at your shoulder that has you turning, a glance back to where he lingers in the doorway. You smile, as your head tilts.

“Maybe.”
