ITS BEEN TWO DAYS since your encounter with caitlin. it’s been a weird experience knowing that you two were staying in the same hotel.

sure you never ran into each other due to your different schedules, but knowing she was here was enough to get you on edge, even more today, you’re manger had told you that they got courtside tickets to iowas game.

just your luck, sure you didn’t mind going to the game but knowing thousands of people are going to be there that knew who she was and who you were.

as you walked in eyes and cameras were immediately on you, you tried your hardest to ignore them and enjoy the game but it was difficult with people coming up to you and asking for photos or autographs. surely as soon as the players started to come out everything died down.

but your heart rate didn’t, as soon as she stepped on the court your heart rate picked up the way her ponytail moved with her movements, she got to her spot on the court ready to start her warmups when her eyes landed on yours.

a smile made its way to her face and she gave you a small wave which you returned as she turned her focus back towards her warmups.

throughout the whole game you tried your hardest not to look at her but your eyes kept moving towards her and everything she did.

as the game came to an end you got your things ready to leave when a hand tapped your shoulder “hey!” you said with a smile “hi! thank you so much for coming to my game” said caitlin with a huge smile going in for a side hug “of course, you guys did amazing!”

“hey by any chance are you free this weekend?” asked caitlin fidgeting with the towel she had in her hands “yea, i should be free” you said looking back at your manager who gave you a slight nod as to say yes. “okay, because i was wondering if you would want to maybe go have lunch or dinner with me” she whispered the last part but not low enough for you not to hear her, “sure i would love to! here’s my number and text me the details later” you replied scribbling down your number on a piece of paper.

the weekend came faster than you could imagine, nerves were bubbling in your stomach as the time for your date with caitlin arrived. you were doing some finishing touches when your phone lit up with a notification “i’m outside :)”

butterflies filled your stomach as you read the message. she was outside your hotel room you couldn’t believe it, quickly gathering your things you headed towards the door. opening it you were met with a very nervous looking caitlin, at least you weren’t the only one, you smiled at her “hey” you said trying to ease up your own nerves “hi, ready?” she replied with a shy smile “yup! where are we headed?” you asked closing your door and walking to the elevator.

“you’ll see” replied caitlin with a look in her eyes you couldn’t quite figure out. walking down the streets of ohio you came across this cute little italian restaurant, you look at caitlin to see she’s already looking at you with a lovestruck smile. she opens the door for you “welcome to valerio’s do you have a reservation?” said the waitress with a friendly smile “yes! it’s under the name caitlin”

“right this way” said the waitress as she led you guys to a table near a window. “this is nice” you spoke looking around taking in the restaurant and how beautiful it was “the best italian restaurant here in cleveland” she says looking at you.

last book: i recently finished The House of Rust, by Khadija Abdalla Bajaber, this fantastical tale of deep sea creatures and local crow and goat shenanigans, it was full of folklore and these gorgeous, spiraling passages about family and ancestry and meaning-making and choice.

now i’m on to the newest book in the Barrøy Chronicles, by Roy Jacobsen, a beautiful and sparse series about a family on a tiny Norwegian island that i discovered from a bookseller rec. i adore these books.

Hi hi!!! I’ve been following u for a while but I just noticed you updated ur pinned post :)) I’d love to hear any thoughts or writing you have on grief if you ever wanted to share know that you definitely have an audience! <3

oh YAY thank you! I have this post that went kind of viral on here (the tags regularly make me misty eyed), and it made me realize that the things I have to say about grief really resonate with a lot of people! i then made it into an instagram graphic, and then a zine, and all of those got a lot of really positive feedback.

one night, I started brainstorming a bunch of grief prompts about remembering 'your person', and then recently, months later, I finally picked that idea back up and it has bloomed into what I hope will be an actually published book/interactive grief journal. I'm even considering looking into making the prompts themselves into a deck of cards that can be used in daily grief exercises, or in a communal grief setting like wakes, funerals, deathaversaries etc. I've gotten positive feedback about this WIP as well!

some of the readings that have been really impactful for me re: grief are:

all about love by bell hooks, chapter 11 / On earth we're briefly gorgeous by ocean vuong / andrew garfield's interview in the believer about his mom / all the living and the dead by hayley campbell / caitlin doughty's books & youtube videos / gendersauce instagram posts / Rebellious Mourning by Cindy Milstein

I'd definitely like to share some excerpts of this WIP here if people are interested (sounds like you are at least!!!!) and to start, I'm happy to share some of the prompts!

If you send me an ask with a number between 1 and 72, and i'll reply with that grief prompt!

The prompts span from mundane things like their name and their favorite things, to heavier things like how did they die and what was their funeral like?

a few things to consider:

Through all of this, it is paramount to mention that nobody is all good or all bad. Not every prompt in here is deep and heavy, but some are. Sometimes we fight with the people we love. We let each other down, we disappoint each other, we forget something important. Sometimes we hurt each other. The ways you hurt or were hurt by each other don’t die when they do - it’s okay to wrestle with the ways your person was imperfect. You are not a bad person for remembering them in the fullness of their humanity. You are not grieving wrong for still being mad about something you were mad about before they died.

 If you are afraid that stepping into the waters of painful memories will inevitably sweep you up and suck you down, remember that no feeling lasts forever. Your hurt will come and, if you give it the space it needs, it will go, too. I promise. This is a safe space to remember your person and the person they were, warts and all. Tread with care, take breaks, take deep breaths, you’re okay. You’re safe. I’m proud of you for sitting in your grief.

bell hook says in ‘All About Love: new visions’ that “In its deepest sense, grief is a burning of the heart, an intense heat that gives us solace and release. When we deny the full expression of our grief, it lays like a weight on our hearts, causing emotional pain and physical ailments. Grief is most often unrelenting when individuals are not reconciled to the reality of loss.” This book and its prompts are meant to aid you in the expression of your grief, to deny the denial of grief.

that said oh my god cue the usual agony. TOP FIVE MUSIC ARTISTS? of what, ALL TIME? what does "top" mean, is it like, most listened to? most beloved? ahhh. okay i have decided to just go with my gut. i'll do all time. sure. sure. i'm fine.

NOT in ranking order:

the cranberries - some of my earliest real memories are riding in my dad's car while he played everybody else is doing it, so why can't we? and no need to argue. i had my own favorite tracks that i requested on repeat. when i hear those opening chords, i am transported back in time. i'm so small that my eyes are barely level with the car window. i can smell the leather interior. i see my dad shifting gears, the leaves on the trees as we speed by, and i hear him laughing. to come back to these albums as an adult was profound and i fell into them heavily after my dad died. dolores' voice is like... pure comfort for me, even when she makes me cry.

frank ocean - if you were also in college when both nostalgia, ultra and channel orange dropped, you'll understand. and if you were younger, can you just imagine being in college when those albums dropped?! it was wild. soundtrack to my early 20s. i felt so much, wanted so much, despaired so much, loved so much and frank ocean had a song for everything. i love his voice, his lyricism, and the soundscapes he creates. i feel like he's not only trying to sing he's trying to submerge you into a bodily experience. no artist has so consistently driven me to weep just from the emotion in his voice. i love how he started and i love where he's gone and grown. i love everything he does musically. nothing is too weird or experimental for me.

florence + the machine - i was a freshman in high school when lungs was released and i heard "kiss with a fist" for the first time. you have to understand it sounded so different to everything on the radio where i lived and also so different to what i had been listening to (metal, punk, pop punk, hardcore, rap) while still giving that fuck you energy. i remember saying to my dad for the first time, playing it for him, "she uses her voice like another instrument!" my dad ended up being a big fan, too, and i am extremely lucky that we got to see them live together. watching my dad jump up & down to songs like "the dog days are over" and "you've got the love" and "spectrum" like a little kid is one of my favorite memories.

EDIT: found this saved in my drafts FROM FOUR WEEKS AGO ohhhh my god caitlin i'm so sorry. idk what happened, if i got too stoned or too tired or what but i don't even have memory of starting it? i'm so sorry and also i definitely can't finish it. trying to pick just two more......... impossible.

now i’m just gonna preface this by saying i’ve mostly reread books this year LMFAO, but the best book that i’ve read for the first time this year is The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. i’d been meaning to read it for YEARS and i finally got the chance to this year and i really enjoyed it

Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins (2009)

as i said, i haven’t read as many new books this year :(, but i did reread The Hunger Games trilogy earlier this year and Catching Fire is one of my favorite sequels EVER! the furthering of the rebellion, as well as the new characters introduced fit so seamlessly and it’s genuinely one of my favorites ever

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - Suzanne Collins (2020)

i don’t have the time to keep up with new releases but i am really looking forward to reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes because i went back into my hunger games phase earlier this year and i now have the energy to read it and i’m very excited to 

Biggest disappointment:

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes & Other Lessons From the Crematory - Caitlin Doughty (2015)

i think the biggest disappointment of the year for me was Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, which is a memoir that i had to read for class. I started off really enjoying the book, but by the end, i started to disagree with some of her thoughts regarding death and funerals and all that, and because i had to read it for class, i couldn’t just stop reading, and i actually had to write about her ideas that i didn’t necessarily like but didn’t know how to expand on lmfao

Biggest surprise:

honestly i think that my biggest surprise was how well written The Hunger Games is as well as how impactful it is. the reason i say this is because i first read the books when i was 12 years old and i haven’t gone back and reread them until this year, 7 years later. that being said, i did understand the series when i first read them, but i didn’t understand the full scope of them like i do now. they are genuinely such good books and are quite literally the blueprint.

Favorite new author (debut or new to you):

Donna Tartt

now this isn’t technically new to me this year, but within the past full year, i read both The Secret History and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and i LOVED them. so definitely Donna Tartt all the way

Boris Pavlikovsky & Kevin Day

i actually have two answers because neither of them are from books i read for the first time in 2022. The first is Boris Pavlikovsky from The Goldfinch. i love him and i think he’s GREAT, but i obviously read that book last year. the SECOND is the one and only Kevin Day from the All For the Game trilogy by Nora Sakavic. i’ve read these books a million times since 2016, but i’m rereading them again right now and my love for him grows every reread

Book that made you cry:

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins (2008)

when i started rereading the hunger games i SOBBED the entirety of the book. i quite literally could not stop crying the entire series. i was a MESS the whole time

Book that made you happy:

Grasshopper Jungle - Andrew Smith (2014)

the thing about me is that i somehow manage to only read books that make me cry, but i think the happiest i’ve been while reading any book this year was when i reread Grasshopper Jungle because it’s my favorite book of all time (tho i don’t recommend it necessarily, it’s very teen boy)

Currently reading: Uhhh a few things. From Here to Eternity by Caitlin Doughty, The Intelligence of Crows, Ravens, Magpies, and Jays: Bird Brains by Candace Savage (yes that’s one title). Also Tokyo Ghouls because I’m a nerd and collecting the series.

Last movie: Resident Evil: Retribution. I’ve been forcing some friends to watch the live action resident evil movies and take a drink every time there’s a cheesy line. We all end up QUITE tipsy.

Last series: I mean, right now I’m re-watching Hannibal (don’t judge me) because I can’t tell if I’m attracted to Will or just want his gender. Other than that... idk. Haven’t been watching a ton of tv cause my brain hates me. Oh!! If we’re talking games I played through all three of the trilogy Mass Effect games in under a week!

Currently working on: I had a dream about an artificial intelligence that a person falls in love with and it felt so real that I started writing about it. The AI was a himbo and that was very sexy of him so, I had to write it.
