You seek refuge in the kitchen. Spending time with others is fun, so fun, but that nagging voice in your head won't stop. I'm being annoying, you think, pressing your head to your hands where they rest on the countertop, hunched over. You breathe out raggedly.

"Fuck," you whisper.

The laughter and merriment in the living room battles to drown out the blaring sound system. You feel its vibrations in your feet. Insecurities ring between your ears relentlessly.

Maybe I should go home, you think.

Someone clears their throat. You spring up, narrowly avoiding hitting your head on the cabinet, Remus having already placed his hand against the sharp edge. You wince at your mistake and his fingers, which took the brunt of your surprise.

"I'm sorry, I didn't hear you come in," you say sheepishly.

Remus pulls his hand back to his side and smiles his forgiveness. You adore his smile, the sight of it sending you into a tizzy that has you forgetting what you were worrying about in the first place.

"You okay?" he asks. Brutally reminded.

Right. "Yeah, I'm good. Are you okay?"

"I'm just fine." His words are coloured by bemusement. "Why're you out here all by yourself?"

You lean against the countertop with your hands braced on either side, tipping your head back in what you hope is a convincing and slightly flirty way.

"Needed a break for a second."

He copies your stance. You tell yourself he's flirting a little bit too as his head tilts back, neck bared, eyes on the ceiling. You trace the curve of his throat as he talks, watch his Adam's apple move.

"It's been more than a second. We're missing you."

You laugh awkwardly. He stays as he is but his eyes move, glancing at you from the peripheral of his vision.

"What?" he asks, expressionless though his voice remains kind. "You don't believe me?"

"How can they miss me? They've got the infamous marauders to keep them entertained."

He turns his head, dipping his chin toward his shoulder, chiding. "Y/N. Come on."

You stare resolutely at the scar branching over his upper arm until it disappears under his short sleeve and say nothing.

He straightens up. "Are you kidding?"

"It's not a secret. I'm, like, a seat filler. You know, I get the numbers up." Your voice rises towards the end and decimates any joking tone you'd established. You scramble to sound less pathetic. "Which is fine. I realise I'm not that funny or interesting or anything. I'm glad to be here. I just worry I wear out my welcome, sometimes."

"That's not true." Remus looks like he might reach out and touch you. He settles for glaring at you. "None of that's true. You're smart, you're more than interesting and you're funnier than those clowns," he jerks his head towards the living room, where both Sirius and James' laughter is bellowing, "will ever be. Half their jokes are recycled material, dove, trust me."

You stretch your hands out, clench them shut tightly. "Thank you. I don't believe you, but thanks for saying it."

He nudges you with his elbow. "Have I ever lied to you?"

You huff a laugh, more because you know it's what he wants than because you feel reassured.

His voice quietens. He speaks with more intensity. "Listen, bub. I know they all want you here. I know they do."

"How can you know that?"

"You have to trust me," he says firmly. "And even if I don't know that and I'm all wrong, I know for certain that I want you here. I love your company. There's no way you could ever wear out your welcome with me."

You smile reluctantly and slide a little closer until your arm is pressed to his. To your startled satisfaction he throws his arm around your shoulder and squeezes you close.

"Believe me?"

"I believe you."

He grins like you've made his day, hand rubbing up and down your arm semi-roughly. "You wanna know something?"

"What?" you ask, returning his secretive glance with a mix of nervousness, unsure what he's going to confess.

The moment you send the message, a pit of guilt seems to open up in your stomach. You’d promised Nobara that you would help her train today, but alas, your children are the priority. No matter how much it pains you to break your promise.

“Dad! Akane is crying again!” Says Kyo, the oldest of your kids, referring to her youngest sister, who can be heard crying out from the living room.

Huuuh why not? Nobara replies, as blunt as usual.

“I’ll be there in a second sweetie.” You call out before rushing to type out a response.

“What’s wrong, honey? You hungry?” You coo to the child in your arms, squirming and wailing. “Oh boy.”

A knock on your door tears your attention away from Akane, placing her on your shoulder as you move to answer the door. “Kugisaki! Hi.” You greet sheepishly.

Nobara looks you dead in the eye, unimpressed to say the least. But her expression quickly softens upon noticing the child in your arms and hearing her cries.

She sighs, not saying a word as she takes the child from your arms, comforting her with soft whispers and back pats. “You look awful.” She comments.

“I know.” You sigh, moved a hand down your face. “Sorry for--”

“No need, I get it.”

You quiet at that, watching as your girlfriend sits on the couch, taking care of one of the lights of your life without asking for anything in return. It makes your heart stutter as an unbearably fond smile spreads across your lips, watching as Akane reaches out to a smiling Nobara.

“Stop being a creep.” She scolds you teasingly, barely holding back her own tender smile.

You move to sit beside her, only to feel your phone vibrate in your pocket with a notification, ‘Pick up Hiroto.’

“Oh sh-” Seeing Nobara’s glare makes you bite your tongue, “I gotta go pick up Hiroto from school. I hate to do this to you but can you watch them for a bit? The school’s not far.”

She blinks at you for a moment, looking down at the child in her arms, “Think I should do it?” she asks the wide-eyed baby.

“Nobara-chan--”

“Relax, I’m kidding. Just get going, don’t leave your kid waiting.” She waves her hand dismissively, smiling genuinely when you starts thanking her profusely.

The door shuts behind you, leaving Nobara alone with the children. Children? Where the hell is Akane?

The girl gets up, calling out to Akane as she walks around the small apartment.

"There you are."

"What do you want?" Akane replies grumpily, looking down at her drawing. Nobara blinks at the unexpected attitude.

"Is... Something wrong?" She tries to approach the conversation carefully. The young girl had always been polite to Nobara whenever she came over to see you, so what's up with her now?

"Nothing is wrong." The girl responds, sparing Nobara only a glance over her shoulder, revealing her frustrated pout.

"Are you having trouble with the drawing?" Nobara suggests, placing a hand on her shoulder, hoping to help, only to be shoved away. "Leave us alone!"

'Us', not 'me'. So it's something she's been bottling up, probably because of how happy her dad seems now.

Kyo starts crying again at the sudden aggression, which Nobara rushes to fix by bouncing her up and down, to no avail. Akane sighs, placing her drawing utensils aside to pick up her sister, quieting her in seconds.

As Nobara watches she tries her best do something she's really not used to, being vulnerable and understanding. She kneels by the two small girls and asks, "Why don't you like me?"

"It's not-" The girl immediately tries to deny it but thinks better of it, "It's not that I don't like you, it's that I don't know you. And I don't know if dad knows you..." she speaks sheepishly.

"Your dad knows me. We're dating."

"I know that. It's all he ever talks about." Akane admits quietly, looking down at her sock-coverer feet rubbing against the carpet.

There it is — the real reason.

"You don't like that I'm taking all of your dad's attention?" Akane doesn't answer, but her embarrassed frown is enough.

"But if I wasn't around, your dad would give you even less attention, since he'd have to take care of the three of you alone. " Nobara explains as patiently as she can.

"But I help him with that." The girl tries to reason, to get back some of her pride.

"And with me, he gets even more help. Isn't that better? Makes his life so much easier."

Akane looks down, embarrassed but realizing the girl is right. "I'm sorry."

"It's alright. Just help me with your sister and I'll forgive you." Nobara says with an air of faux superiority, smiling playfully as the girl begins to smile again.

"Hey, is the house on fire yet?" You call out as you walk in, Hiroto by your side. You walk into the living room to see Nobara, laughing along with Akane at whatever new TV show Kyo's now obsessed with.

"You're usually the one starting fires though." Akane comments with a chuckle while Nobara nods cheekily.

Although you have to lay your pride aside, your heart swells upon watching them interact.

You don't mind them making fun of you, if it means they get along like family.
