It seemed she could only manage one at a time, and being seen by Thackery meant she couldn’t be heard. She pressed her lips together in clear disappointment, then mouthed the words, “I’m sorry.” Emily didn’t know how long she had wandered in the mist before finding her way back to her brother, but the world she found him in was unrecognizable. The clothing he wore, the dwelling he resided in; nothing was familiar to her besides her brother’s face. How was he untouched by time, if so much had changed around him? Or was this even the same world she had left? So many questions, and no way to ask them.

Engaged Couples of Kashmire: Alanna Thackery & Franz Schoulsburg

Franz and Alanna have been good friends since they were teenagers. Franz is a stoic man of very few words, but his actions, affections, and talents speak for him–in the way he leaves books he thinks she will like to read in her mailbox, or in the delicious taste of his homemade chocolate chip cookies, all wrapped up in a handkerchief and tied with a bow. Alanna is his favorite person, and she can draw a warm smile out of him with just a look. 

It’s not hard to see why Reggie was obsessed with her–someone as pretty, and kind, and lovely, and good-humored as Alanna. It’s not hard to see why she chose to propose to Franz in the end–despite all the misunderstandings and obstacles they’ve endured. 

It all makes sense to Franz why Reggie went after his twin sister, in retribution for having Alanna’s love, but it’s too late to threaten the future political star of Kashmire to back off. Franz can only love Alanna as hard as ever and try to keep Reggie away from her, but it will be difficult when Reggie is about to become his brother-in-law.
