Author's Notes: this fic was born out of a want to see more realistic reactions to inhuman creatures in a world like ours. i do love a brave and instantly smitten protagonist, but we also need to remember the shy, easily startled souls who take a bit to warm up to a monster. this will be slow burn but definitely worth the wait.

The creature’s name was Spirit, given to him by your grandfather.

He told you this himself one day after he had announced his presence with a hum as he had begun doing so he wouldn’t scare you.

“That’s quite on the nose, isn’t it?” you replied, a tiny smile on your face, “Though that seems like him.”

Spirit had stared at your face long after that, his claws twitching as if itching to touch, and you realized that was the first time you had relaxed enough to smile around him.

The change in comfortability was minute and gradual; time passed slowly while spending your days at the house and Spirit’s visits became more and more frequent and lengthy. He seemed to want to be around you all the time but was reluctant as he seemed extremely conscious of your flighty nature — something you couldn’t blame him for being hyperaware of.

It was one day while preparing to paint after having stagnated in your creative efforts for so long, that you realized you missed him.

You paused, paintbrush mid-dip into the paint. If you called his name, would he appear? You’d never tried it in the year you’d known him, and felt a little shy about asking for him now. Would you be a bother? He never seemed to think so.

You blinked a few times before, feeling extremely silly, you opened your mouth and whispered, “S-Spirit..?”

The result was instantaneous. Spirit materialized from the ceiling, hollow eyes widened as if in surprise as the top half of his body hung upside down, directly in front of your face.

You were barely aware of the high-pitched noise that left your mouth as you jumped. Hurriedly, Spirit extricated himself from the ceiling in a crawl, coming to your side slowly while murmuring, “Sorry.. y-you surprise..d me, Birdie..”

“No, no, you’re fine,” you said quickly, a hand to your chest as your spiking heart rate calmed a bit, “Did I.. summon you? I’m sorry if it was sudden or if you were in the middle of something. I hope I didn’t disturb you.”

Spirit shook his head frantically, his skeletal grin crookedly stretching his maw in the endearing way you were accustomed to.

“No.. no..t.. a bother…” he gingerly placed his head on your shoulder and quietly purred in your ear, “Tha..nk you … for summoning.. me.”

For a reason unbeknownst to you, sharp, pleasant tingles went up your spine and goosebumps erupted onto your skin. Face hot, you nodded quickly, staring unseeingly at the floor, a shy smile on your face.

Spirit chuffed affectionately before extricating himself from you, head tilting curiously at your blank canvas. Smile spreading, you glanced at him, hoisting your palette towards him, paintbrush still in hand.

“I’m going to paint. It’s been a while. I wasn’t sure what my subject should be, but.. how about you?”

He blinked at you in surprise.

“R..eally? But I.. I look..”

He trailed off and seemed to curl into himself, the jerky, stilted movements that came naturally to him reemerging as he appeared to flounder. Poor Spirit had tried to control them around you, and you were sure it was because he thought they scared you. Though that might’ve been true in the beginning, it wasn’t now. You hesitated for only a brief second before placing your fingers over his clenched ones, an action that caused him to jerk and look at you, startled.

“You know I’m not afraid of you anymore, right? Not your appearance, not your voice echoing in my mind… besides,” you felt your face flush again, before stuttering out, “I-I think you’re beautiful in your own unique way now. I was too scared in the beginning, but there’s something about you that.. well, that I think should be painted.”

Instantly, you turned away, feeling too red and too nervous to want to see Spirit’s reaction. The silence was loud and long as you picked up another bottle of paint; a deep purple for the shadows that clung to him as tight as a snake constricting its prey.

Finally, you heard him whisper, a bashful tone in his voice, “Where.. shoul..d I.. sit..?”

I highly HIGHLY doubt that they're going to have Superior take over Peter's body again because that would be a kinda shitty move and it wouldn't make much sense considering everything prior (and also while slotts current spiderman run is ending to make way for superior, I think the current asm run will also continue at the same time so Peter should still be around and separate which THA NK G O D)
