TO LIVE, AND TO SERVE
part one
(tfo. sentinel x gn.miner.reader )
spoilers! just in case. nothing plot heavy spoilers but yk just in case.
one, two, three
CHAINS clinked against the ground. Ones, you realize that were yours as you try to lift up your pedes, only for it to stop short a few centimeters high and drag back down again with a hackle. Alright, so you're shackled. Easy, just flip over and see where I am.
You tried. Tried. To flip over, but all you could manage was a wiggle and that's just about it. Your servos were chained to your back. And your neck was sore bent at a position for so long. The ground was grimy and dark and your cheek — Primus it was sore —was pressed against the floor.
Where am I?
A migraine pulsed behind your optics, coupled with a familiar faint ache thrumming from your abdomen, freshly sore.
Oh, right.
A kick to the shin and one to the helm. A blur of colors. Then, a throttle. Darkwing, you grimaced. You should've known better than to play hero and help. A creak sounded, hinges of a metal door opening and your neck strained from frantic ways of trying to look over your shoulder.
—Proved futile.
"Oh, you don't have to run." A voice echoed, a cave-like resonance that trilled and bounced off the walls of the cell. "I've already made sure that you couldn't."
The shadow stretched across the floor. It became larger, molding in size. Into shape. You try to speak, but all that came out were incoherent slurs of sentences. Each one increased with panic. Intake, slack, faceplate numb. And that, to your unfortunate demise, amused the Prime.
"No worries, though, Airachnid's venom aren't usually that fatal. Well, usually. But this time I advised, and I'm glad she listened, to use her lesser death-inducing ones. Ones that take an instant. Its a bit of a mess when anomalies die."
His pedes stopped beside your helm. "And you know that... don't, you?" Another babble from you made him laugh. "Hah. You look ridiculous. Here, allow me."
A harsh tug on your back flipped you over and you grunted, finally able to relish some light from the ceiling. Sentinel prime loomed above you, a grin on his face.
Oh, Primus.
You never thought this was how you'd meet your beloved Prime. Besides, any other way would result your spark snuffed and churned into energon. The ache in your abdomen pierced into a searing pain. You winced.
"You know what that is? Its a kind of paralysis that only affects your body, not your helm." He tapped your forehead.
Tink.
Tink.
"Your mind still works. You can think, you can feel. I can see your optics are still bright." He tips his helm, curiously amused. " Still got that little fire in you, huh. And you're scared. You're scared, yes?"
Silence. You only stared back, chassis pumped with andrenaline. What else you were suppose to say, blegh blegh blegh?
" Silly me. Blink twice if you're scared."
You blinked once.
"Oh?"
Then another slow blink.
"That's what I thought. Now," he knelt beside your helm. The tight smile on his face was nothing genial. " What did I tell you about miners going around creating troubles for me to fix. "
Sir! It wasn't what it was! You rustled, moving you mouth. Nothing came out. Whether Sentinel was aware of the incident or not, it seemed he chose to ignore the possibility that you might be right.
" Not only you defied a supervisor, you also kicked him and destroyed — let me see," He tapped your cheek, tink tink tink, optics to the ceiling, thinking. "Oh yes, almost blew up crates worth of decades use. Injured five of my gaurds. Many more, probably. And, why is that? To make a point nobody will understand. To make a point that's virtually worthless?"
You shook your head.
We couldn't go on any longer. Sir, please.
We are free.
We need to be free.
"Your little speech was adorable. That mineer you saved, oh how melodramatic. Unfortunately like you, he's not going to have the opportunity of choosing his punishment."
Your optics widened and you froze. That look on your face seemed to please him and he lunged forward. You choked as he grabbed your face, pulling your head up to his level.
"It's a shame." He crooned. " You miners are so delicate. Its a miracle you managed this much through the mines already." The other servo grabbed your throat. He sighed, and tightened both grips.
The accumulating andrenaline allowed you to kick below in panic. The venom was dissapating. You feel a little pulse in your pedes, as well as the sensors blooming back on your digits.
"Now, I'll give you two options" He leaned closer. "And I'll only say this once. You can serve Cybertron and it's people — or,"
The servo clutching your throat released and glided down, down and lower...
" Or, you can serve me. Your Prime. Your leader — What will that be?"
Your optics flickered, staring back into his blue ones.
You faintly reminisced bumping into a miner on the street while heading down to the main square of iacon. You've just had your pay, a few hundred shanix clutched in your servos and the collision smeared them across the ground. Frantic, you tried to pick them up, ignoring the several laughters from the bots above — and the miner did too. They were just like you, except...
"Here," They said.
You look up.
They were pretty. Well kempt. A gentle smile on their face. Their platings were shiny, glossy. Without a scratch.
You were confused.
They were just like you. No cogs. No nothing.
"Oh, you're at a different sector, then?" You remember asking.
The miner blinked and frown, chagrined as he handed the last slip of shanix and looked away. You couldn't asked more. A mech with gleaming gold platings dragged them away.
The last look he gave was a somber look before looking ahead. Never back.
You remember being confused. A little irritated at such a display the senator took them away.
But, now. Now, it all made sense.
Is that what it was?
A toy for them to play with?
"I'll...serve....you...." You croaked out.
But even so, at least you're able to live.
"Good mech."

Think fast, Sentinel. That is what you are for, after all.
Tumblr media
Today on "this is not what I planned to draw, but I think it turned out Neat": a nightmare.
Sentinel from my ongoing fanfic verse, Crossed Sparks.
This won't make much sense without the context of the fic, but I'm basically playing around with the idea of a Sentinel who was custom made for his position of the Principal Aide.
Bonus closeup because this thing is huge:

Why I feel Jack Darby isn't like Orion Pax/Optimus Prime
Tumblr media
This is probably not gonna do me any favors in the wider Transformers community, but that's fine; I don't want to be in the good graces of half those people. Besides, I've grown to really dislike Jack over the years, and now that there's a new TF film that actually shows us Optimus and Megatron's past that has everyone cheering, I can actually cite that film in my argument should I encounter any whiners.
Fair warning, this will not be in Jack's favor.
So, as we see of him in Transformers: Prime, Jack had a really poor life. His dad is missing for reasons unknown, his mother is working herself to the bone to keep the roof over their heads, and Jack himself is working a horrid job to try and lift some of the burden from her shoulders. A standard modern day life for teenage boys, right? Oh, and don't forget him going all gaga over prissy cheerleader Sierra; that's of course the icing on the cake of this cut and dry trope, because the loser boy has to have a thing for the social climber girl who he can't recognize as trouble.
However, when he crashes into the Autobot-Decepticon War, Jack is adamant against getting involved. He whines about his new lot in life, complains that he just wants "a normal life", and overall is ungrateful to the Autobots that saved his skin a short time ago. Yes, he pulled through in the five part premiere and did so at other points in the first and even second seasons - but those were all life or death situations.
Every other time, Jack caved to peer pressure and stayed inside the lines. He never stood up to the school bully, let himself get embarrassed by said bully in front of Sierra, and then broke his deal with Arcee by going to an underground race. Heck, if you ask me, the only reason he helped save the bully in that episode was because Jack didn't want to have a dead guy on his conscience. Sure he said "it's the right thing", but where was that nobility when you were ogling your crush throughout the episode, hm?
And to say that he's like Orion Pax after all of the above is an insult to Orion and Optimus' integrity. Can you truly see Optimus whining over his lot in life, being spiteful and rude to guys who were mean to him specifically and not his friends, or just losing brain cells when a pretty girl is involved and getting himself into trouble in a misguided attempt to impress her?
No.
Orion/Optimus would never do that. He'll take the hits to himself and make the best of it with a smile on his face, he'll fight for his friends rather than himself alone, and even if he's head over heels for Ariel/Elita One, he won't compromise himself or his morals just to impress her. Orion/Optimus is better than that, and would never stoop to such actions.
But you know who would do all of that?
This guy.
Tumblr media
As TF One shows, Megatron in his youth was much like - gasp - Jack Darby. They both kept their heads low to avoid further ridicule and pain, they never wandered outside the lines for fear of the unknown/repercussions, and despite advocating for a change or better life, they didn't really lift a finger to do that. They both needed an outside force to push them onto a new path. And they both ended up having a low chance of heroism when there was pressure on them: Jack's was anytime Sierra or Vince the Bully was involved, and Megatron's was when the 'Bot responsible for ruining his life and all of Cybertron's population was at his mercy.
Speaking of, what are the odds Jack would have a similar reaction to meeting his father? Yeah sure, he spared Megatron in S1, but Megatron also taunted him by asking what Optimus' response would be if he killed him. Put Jack in a position where he gets to beat up his dad, and are we sure that Optimus would still have that sway over him?
Just ask Sentinel, he can tell you how well that turned out when Orion Pax tried talking down D-16 - oh wait, you can't, because D-16 killed him.
Tumblr media
Honestly, there are far more similarities between Jack and Megatron than Jack and Optimus. I'm tired of Jack getting all the love and being heralded as Orion-like or Optimus-like when he never was. He's far closer to Megatron, and if I'm the only one who can see that, fine. I don't care.
These are my observations, my beliefs, and I'm sticking with them.
Now on the same token (but coming later), Smokescreen actually has more in common with Orion Pax/Optimus Prime, something the new TF flick has shown, even if I disapprove of a chunk of the writing and characterization in it. But, given I'm probably setting some people's hair on fire, I'll leave you alone for now to digest this post.
Good day, and remember:
"Autobots, transform and roll out!"

So, while watching Transformers One this time, I found my eyes drawn to B-127 and his overall demeanor. Particularly the fear in his demeanor.
And the train scenes are where it is maybe the most obvious (with him asking himself why he's doing this when they're climbing the train and then being the first to start running when they notice the rocks coming closer). But he also kinda has that same demeanor a lot elsewhere, in more subtle areas and such.
And not that the other main three don't have fear in their demeanors now and again as well, but Bee consistently has it more often, and when the others have it to, he has it to a different extent, amount, etc. than the others.
The first thing that kinda clued me into this was when Alpha Trion wakes, everyone backs up. But, when the other three stop, Bee keeps moving back a bit before finally stopping like the rest.
Now, this is all before he gets his T-Cog. And with his T-Cog, since he now obviously has the autonomy and a better way to fight (not talking about knife-hands yet, more so just the general "hey the playing field is leveled now"), and based on one of Bee's movements right after they get their T-Cogs, which kind of looks like he's practicing throwing a punch (camera cuts away while he's doing that so I can't be 100% sure, but it does look like it), obviously now his demeanor's going to completely change, correct?
Wrong. He still has quite a bit of fear in his demeanor here and there. And it's especially true with people, one of the first cases being the High Guard, with him looking scared throughout the whole fight part and remorking nervously about the High Guard members being meatheads. (again, looking a bit more scared than the others, particularly Elita, who he is right next to. Not really counting Orion in this one because he's got a lot of shit going on up there with Dee's sorta behavior switch-up and all)
Then, as a better case, when he gets captured with Dee and other High Guard members, we notice him kind of cower away from Sentinel quite a bit where other characters don't, especially when Sentinel comes really close to him. And when Dee is struggling to get up after having the Megatronus decal burned into his metal, Bee warns him to not get up by whispering, trying not to catch Sentinel or any other Iacon guard's attention.
And that one is particularly interesting because that's the first time we see Bee really cower from a person like that. Like with Alpha Trion, it was just when he was first getting up, and Bee kind of adjusted fairly quickly after that. And with the High Guard, obviously they're a violent bunch, but Bee doesn't really actively cower away from them like he does from Sentinel.
Then, later in the movie, when the fight in Sentinel's Tower is under way, we see Bee start to cover his head when explosions sound when Elita and Orion do not.
And then when Megatron is making his big speech and all of the High Guard are getting excited and start to walk towards where Megatron is, we see Bee hunch down while getting pushed around, while Elita doesn't hunch down as much (we also see her look to check on Bee real fast before going back to watch Megatron and the High Guard and all).
So yeah, Bee overall has a more fearful demeanor than the rest. Now, why is that?
For his fear towards people particularly, part of it could be the violence that Cogless bots have to endure from Cogged bots. Like, it's kind of established that Cogged bots being violent towards Cogless bots is just a regular thing that Cogless bots are used to. No one's really phased by it in the movie, and when it's talked about (Orion and Dee in the barracks after getting punched) it's also brushed off as "Oh yeah the Cogged bots were entitled to do that to us lowly insubordinate Cogless bots". So it's a thing. And for a bot that got reassigned (demoted) multiple times because he was so good at what he does (talking), and then finally just dropped into Sublevel 50, it is fairly likely that he faced violence as well, possibly to a different extent.
But, also, all of his fearful demeanor could also be because he likely never held a super dangerous job like the miners for a long time, unlike other characters. So for Elita, Dee, and Orion, all of these fear causing things would likely be more mild, because come on, they have to go through tunnels of death regularly (at least regular enough for everyone to be hella prepared to leave that damn tunnel at the beginning of the movie). But for Bee it isn't. Because he didn't have to go through that.
Now, is this to say that Bee is a coward? Of course not. We see multiple moments of bravery (not counting his knife hands scene, that's less bravery as much as it is just glee and getting knife hands), such as when he and Elita didn't even hesitate to go fight Megatron when they realized he would probably just kill everyone. Plus, at the High Guard hiding place, while characters like Starscream try to run and hide from the fight, Bee joins when Orion randomly throws him the gun, and then even throws himself off of Orion and at people.
So yeah, he's a scared bot, but I wouldn't say he's a cowardly bot.
And of course, thank you for coming to my TedTalk

TO LIVE, AND TO SERVE
part two
(tfo.sentinel x gn.miner.reader)
A short chapter
one, two, three
"So, what'd you think?" He placed his servos on his hips and glanced down at you with a grin. You're looking at elsewhere, though. At the interior of the habsuite and the slight widen of your intake and mouth should be embarrassing.
After all, you missed feeling the movements on your face after the venom disappating.
"A nice, lovely space for a miner, isn't it?"
Nice was a bit of an understatement. It wasn't anything lie you'd have at the barracks. Gold amassed the entirety of the room, gleaming as every glare of the light streaming through the wide arched windows rushed in. A a comfortable mini alcove for a library was by the corner and — oh, look your berth. Right by the window, puffed up with pillows and satin covers.
A dream for any mech with terrible backs and callous bodies. Small but strangely pleasant. Befitting of a miner, you suppose.
"I appreciate your kind...gift, sir.''
You could finally enjoy a time of solitude. Away from all the drilling.
"I've got it all prepared in under a cycle." He said. " Had the drones churning up a few midnight energon for the bit. You know, after I saved you from getting killed."
Saved me from getting killed by you. How poetic.
The drones behind pottered into the room arranging the furniture where Sentinel wanted it to be, moving in necessities you never thought you'd needed : waxing equipment, extra plating transfers, extra paint transfers, among more you couldn't count. However, one of the drones had a significant dent across their chassis. Almost like someone had thrown quite the punch and wanted to string out their gut.
You curl out a digit to point. "Is that...normal?"
Sentinel grunted and gave a dismissive wave, optics trained on the several drones organizing the library. He was fixated on the covers being color coded.
"Nothing trivial. This used to be a holding cell for soon to be named convicts so you can expect the structure to be a little bit janky and loose."
You look up to see where the metal pole of the ceiling is bent at an odd angle with clear signs of energon flakes coating the end. Poor mech, almost impaled by the thing. What were they doing up there anyway?
" The blueprint is drawn up before the war. Unfortunately, too much funds were going to the military so we had to improvise— " he nodded towards your berth, "—and built personal cell at the castle instead"
"I'm assuming holding cells are this lavish all around."
He finally looked at you for a moment and let out a loud laugh, a rich crescending wave of timber. "For me? Perhaps. Not for you, though. Not anything you would expect it to be."
A kind of tightness coiled in your chest at the tone of his voice. Not for you. Not like you. Not you. A chant. A mantra. Layers and overlays of voices that won't stop. The prior migraine that plagued your helm plunged back at full force and you gritted your dentas, cringing. As sentinel looked away, he conversed with the drones of what color you preferred your berth covers to be. " Blue," he declared. A distant murmer.. You drown out the noise, lightheaded. Eventually, he came up to you, uttering words that doesn't make sense.
"Thank you, sir." You say aimlessly.
"And, on that topic of sir," He cornered you in.
You step back instinctively
"I remember asking you to serve." A servo curled around your sides. "And I won't repeat this again, you know how much I hate repeating myself its ridiculous."
" What do you—"
"My Liege." He leaned down, whispering in your audials firmly. "Say it."
You stared straight ahead and swallowed. The lump on your throat glided down like an irregular sized rock. He was so close. So close to reach. If you could just reach out, curl your servos around his neck and squeezed — maybe, you could accomplish something that hadn't been done in your lifetime.
"My liege, sir.'' The words rippled out.
"Louder." He squeezed your sides, digits digging into the soft protoform.
You winced. "My liege, sir."
His nose grazed your jaw and he smiled. "Good mech, and don't worry about the floor you're in. I'll only call you up when you're dearly needed."
Which is, every night.
