For those of you out there who are familiar with the Texas-based sandwich chain, Schlotsky’s, you will understand the craving. Because we no longer have any Schlotsky’s locations in (or anywhere near) NYC since about 2004, I usually have to wait until I’m visiting Texas to have one of my favorite sandwiches. However, the craving got so strong over the last week, that I decided to try my hand at making it at home. Using the bottom half of 2 bialys, I successfully recreated the Cheese Original (cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, sliced black olives, yellow mustard, lettuce, tomato, a tiny bit of onion, and @franksredhot to stand in for the Schlotsky’s sauce (which was dynamite). The bread wasn’t quite the same, but pretty darn close — and the flavors were absolutely there.
