Otis Williams (Otis Miles Jr.; October 30, 1941) is a baritone singer. Nicknamed “Big Daddy”, he is a songwriter and a record producer.
He is the founder and last surviving original member of the Motown vocal group The Temptations, a group in which he continues to perform; he owns the rights to the Temptations name.
He was born in Texarkana, Texas, to Otis Miles and Hazel Louise Williams. He moved to Detroit at age 10. He married Josephine Rogers (1961-64), and they had one son; he married Ann Cain (1967-73); Arleata “Goldie” Williams (1983).
These groups included He and the Siberians, the El Domingoes, and the Distants. In 1959, The Distants scored a local hit, co-written by him and their manager/producer Johnnie Mae Matthews, called “Come On”, with lead vocals by Richard Street. Future Distants recordings were not as successful, and after an offer from Berry Gordy of Motown Records, he and his friends/bandmates Elbridge “Al” Bryant and Melvin Franklin quit the Distants. Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams from The Primes joined him, Bryant, and Franklin to create the Elgins, who signed to Motown in March 1961 as “The Temptations”.
The Temptations became one of the most successful acts in soul music over nearly five decades, during which singers such as David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards, former Distant Richard Street, Damon Harris, Ron Tyson, Ali-Ollie Woodson, Theo Peoples, Ray Davis, and former Spinners singer G.C. Cameron have all been members. The group’s lineup changes were so frequent, stressful, and troublesome that he and Melvin Franklin promised each other they would never quit the group.
He was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Temptations. He received an honorary doctorate from Stillman College. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

LEGENDS OF GUITAR: The Man . . The Myth . . The Guitar. Johnny Winter was the first white Texas bluesman to make it on a big scale. In 1968, he released his first album, The Progressive Blues Experiment. Soon after Johnny met the Chicago Blues guitarist Michael Bloomfield, who invited Winter to join him and Al Kooper on stage at the Fillmore East during a December 1968 performance. Columbia Records officials at the show were very impressed and signed Johnny to a very large advance, $600,000. Johnny Winter’s first Columbia Records release was logically titled Johnny Winter and included the same personnel as The Progressive Blues Experiment; bassist Tommy Shannon, drummer Uncle John Turner, and Edgar Winter on keyboards and saxophone. It was a major success. Second Winter followed in 1969 plus great success in concerts – and an affair with Janis Joplin – that led to an historic Madison Square Garden concert. Winter went on to play in the Muddy Waters Band and paired with just about every top Blues artist of the 1970s and 80s. Three albums produced by Winter for Muddy Waters, Hard Again (1977), I'm Ready (1978), and Muddy "Mississippi" Waters – Live (1979) have won Grammy Awards. Several of Winter’s own albums were also nominated for Grammy Awards and in 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame.
Decades on from his death, Stevie Ray Vaughan is still being discovered by new generations. In the decades since his passing, SRV’s impact on the music scene has become more and more pronounced. His influence – his searing guitar style, eloquent songwriting and consummate musicianship – is undeniable on the new generation of blues rockers like Joe Bonamassa, Philip Sayce and John Mayer, while his classic albums such as Texas Flood and Couldn’t Stand The Weather are now justifiable stalwarts of the blues canon. His music seemed to unite everyone: tattooed Chicano bikers, besuited lawyers and crystal-carrying New Agers. The sound of Stevie Ray’s stinging Strat and gritty voice went directly to the hearts of the huddled masses. You see, that old blues adage is true: What goes around comes around . . May their memory endure.

[Album] Texas und Spooner Oldham veröffentlichen gemeinsames Album "The Muscle Shoals Sessions"!
Tumblr media
Mit "Would I Lie to You" und "Say What You Want" gibt es bereits zwei Songs daraus zu hören.
Live aufgenommen im renommierten Fame Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, enthält das Album zwölf der größten Hits von Texas sowie zwei Coverversionen ("Would I Lie To You" von Charles and Eddie und "Save The Last Dance" von The Drifters). Die auf das Wesentliche reduzierten Songs, angeführt von der gefühlvollen Stimme von Sharleen Spiteri und untermalt von Spooner Oldham am Klavier, erweisen sich dabei als ebenso eigenständige und zeitlose Klassiker.
“To have the option to go to Muscle Shoals to record was like being a little kid in a sweet shop”, erzählt Sängerin Sharleen Spiteri über die Erfahrung, die mit Texas im Sommer 2023 zuletzt das karriereübergreifende "The Very Best Of 1989 - 2023" veröffentlicht hatte. “Working with Spooner was inspiring, fun and he’s just a wonderful human being. The fact that Northern Soul music has been such a massive influence for Texas made the fit with Spooner just right. Him writing ‘Keep On Talking’ was essential to us recording it for this album.”
Als Songwriter, Produzent und Keyboarder prägte Oldham, der 2009 in die Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen wurde, Klassiker wie "When a Man Loves a Woman", "Mustang Sally" und "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)". Nachdem er 1967 Memphis verlassen hatte, tat sich Oldham mit dem Sänger Dan Penn in den American Studios von Chips Moman zusammen, wo die Beiden zu einem der besten Songwriter-Duos des Landes wurden. Gemeinsam schrieben sie unter anderem Hits für Aretha Franklin ("Do Right Woman"), die Box Tops ("Cry Like a Baby") und Janis Joplin ("A Woman Left Lonely"). Nach dem Ende der bahnbrechenden Ära des Southern Soul komponierte Oldham auch noch für andere Artists, darunter Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne und die Everly Brothers.

Nanci Griffith Dies at 68
Folk and country singer/songwriter Nanci Griffith has died at age 68.
Her death from undisclosed causes was first reported by her friend and fellow musician Suzy Bogguss and confirmed by Griffith’s management.
“It was Nanci’s wish that no further formal statement or press release happen for a week following her passing,” Gold Mountain Entertainment said.
In her own statement on social media, Bogguss said her “heart is aching” over the loss of “beautiful soul that I love.”
“I feel blessed to have many memories of our times together along with most everything she ever recorded,” Bogguss said. “I’m going to spend the day reveling in the articulate, masterful legacy she’s left us.”
That legacy spans nearly 20 studio albums between 1978 and 2012, songs like “Love at the Five and Dime” and “From a Distance” and treasured live concerts.
“Never a more captivating performer than Nanci Griffith,” Steve Martin said on Twitter. “Voice of the sweetest angel.”
That voice used to sing with John Prine’s. His widow, Fiona, mourned “a sad day” for music and music lovers.
“Rest in peace and music, sweet Nanci, and if you see that old duet partner, please hug him from all of us,” she wrote on Facebook.
Darius Rucker said Griffith was one of the reasons he went to Nashville to make country music after his pop days with Hootie and the Blowfish.
“Today i am just sad, man,” he tweeted. “I lost one of my idols.”
Griffith was to be inducted into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame in February 2022.
“Rest in peace, Nanci Griffith,” Todd Snider wrote on Facebook. “Bravo, thank you, we will all miss you.”

Today we remember the passing of Lead Belly who Died: December 6, 1949 in New York City
Huddie William Ledbetter, better known by the stage name Lead Belly, was an American folk and blues singer, musician and songwriter notable for his strong vocals, virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the folk standards he introduced, including his renditions of "Goodnight, Irene", "Midnight Special", "Cotton Fields", and "Boll Weevil".
Lead Belly styled himself "King of the Twelve-String Guitar", and despite his use of other instruments like the accordion, the most enduring image of Lead Belly as a performer is wielding his unusually large Stella twelve-string. This guitar had a slightly longer scale length than a standard guitar, increasing the tension on the instrument, which, given the added tension of the six extra strings, meant that a trapeze-style tailpiece was needed to help resist bridge lifting. It had slotted tuners and ladder bracing.
Lead Belly played with finger picks much of the time, using a thumb pick to provide walking bass lines described as "tricky" and "inventive" and occasionally to strum. This technique, combined with low tunings and heavy strings, gives many of his recordings a piano-like sound. In fact, scholars have suggested much of his guitar playing was inspired equally by barrelhouse piano and the Mexican Bajo sexto, an instrument he encountered in Texas and Louisiana.
Lead Belly's tunings are debated by both modern and contemporary musicians and blues enthusiasts alike — exacerbated by the lack of film footage of his performing rendering chord decoding difficult — but it seems to be a down-tuned variant of standard tuning; it is likely that he tuned his guitar strings relative to one another, so that the actual notes shifted as the strings wore. Such down-tuning was a common technique before the development of truss rods, and was intended to prevent the instrument's neck from warping. Lead Belly's playing style was popularized by Pete Seeger, who adopted the twelve-string guitar in the 1950s and released an instructional LP and book using Lead Belly as an exemplar of technique.
In some of the recordings in which Lead Belly accompanied himself, he would make an unusual type of grunt between his verses, sometimes described as "haah!" Songs such as "Looky Looky Yonder", "Take This Hammer", "Linin' Track" and "Julie Ann Johnson" feature this unusual vocalization. In "Take This Hammer", Lead Belly explained, "Every time the men say, 'Haah,' the hammer falls. The hammer rings, and we swing, and we sing. The "haah" sound can be heard in work chants sung by Southern railroad section workers, "gandy dancers", in which it was used to coordinate work crews as they laid and maintained tracks.
Lead Belly's songs covered a wide range of genres and topics including gospel music; blues about women, liquor, prison life, and racism; and folk songs about cowboys, prison, work, sailors, cattle herding, and dancing. He also wrote songs about people in the news, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Jean Harlow, Jack Johnson, the Scottsboro Boys and Howard Hughes. Lead Belly was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
Though many releases credit him as "Leadbelly", he himself wrote it as "Lead Belly", which is also the spelling on his tombstone and the spelling used by the Lead Belly Foundation.
Lead Belly was imprisoned multiple times beginning in 1915 when he was convicted of carrying a pistol and sentenced to time on the Harrison County chain gang. He later escaped and found work in nearby Bowie County under the assumed name of Walter Boyd. Later, in January 1918, he was imprisoned at the Imperial Farm in Sugar Land, Texas, after killing one of his relatives, Will Stafford, in a fight over a woman. During his second prison term, another inmate stabbed him in the neck (leaving him with a fearsome scar he subsequently covered with a bandana); Lead Belly nearly killed his attacker with his own knife.
In 1925 he was pardoned and released after writing a song to Governor Pat Morris Neff seeking his freedom, having served the minimum seven years of a 7-to-35-year sentence. Combined with his good behavior, which included entertaining the guards and fellow prisoners, his appeal to Neff's strong religious beliefs proved sufficient. It was a testament to his persuasive powers, as Neff had run for governor on a pledge not to issue pardons (the only recourse for prisoners, since in most Southern prisons there was no provision for parole). After their initial meeting in 1924, Neff came back several times and regularly brought guests to the prison on Sunday picnics to hear Ledbetter perform.
In 1930, Ledbetter was sentenced to Louisiana State Penitentiary after a summary trial for attempted homicide for stabbing a man in a fight. In 1939, Lead Belly returned to prison. Alan Lomax, then 24, took him under his wing and helped raise money for his legal expenses, dropping out of graduate school to do so. After his release, Lead Belly appeared as a regular on Lomax and Nicholas Ray's groundbreaking CBS radio show Back Where I Come From, broadcast nationwide. He also appeared in nightclubs with Josh White, becoming a fixture in New York City's surging folk music scene and befriending the likes of Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger, all fellow performers on Back Where I Come From. During the first half of the decade, he recorded for the Library of Congress, and Moe Asch (future founder of Folkways Records) and in 1944 went to California, where he recorded strong sessions for Capitol Records. He lodged with a studio guitar player on Merrywood Drive in Laurel Canyon. Lead Belly was the first American country blues musician to achieve success in Europe.
In 1940, Lead Belly recorded for one of the biggest record companies at the time, RCA Victor. These sessions were held on June 15 and 17, with the Golden Gate Quartet accompanying some songs. The recordings resulted in the album, The Midnight Special and Other Southern Prison Songs, being issued by Victor Records, which contained extensive notes and song texts prepared by Alan Lomax. According to Charles Wolfe and Kip Lornell, "it was one of the finest public presentations of Leadbelly's music: well recorded, well advertised, well documented. And the album justified its reputation as a landmark in African American folk music. Several of the recordings from these sessions were also issued as singles by Bluebird Records.
In 1941, Lead Belly was introduced to Moses "Moe" Asch by mutual friends. Asch owned a recording studio and small record label, which mainly released folk records for the local New York City market. Between 1941 and 1944, Lead Belly released three albums under the Asch Recordings label.
In 1949, Lead Belly had a regular radio show, Folk Songs of America, broadcast on station WNYC in New York, on Henrietta Yurchenco's show on Sunday nights. Later in the year he began his first European tour with a trip to France, but fell ill before its completion and was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease (a motor neuron disease). His final concert was at the University of Texas at Austin in a tribute to his former mentor, John Lomax, who had died the previous year. Martha also performed at that concert, singing spirituals with her husband.
Lead Belly died later that year in New York City and was buried in the Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, 8 miles west of Blanchard, in Caddo Parish. He is honored with a statue across from the Caddo Parish Courthouse, in Shreveport.
