"You know, people ask me how I could be interested in pagan, Teutonic cultures, and I tell them I cannot help myself—voices sing to me. I tell them there might be something we can learn from them.”

Hansa - When city-states ruled the seas…
Tumblr media
The first trade unions of European cities were established from the 12th century, but the most famous and largest union was the one called Hansa, which included all port cities of the Baltic and North Seas.
It began in 1241 with the Treaty of Lübeck with the city of Soest. Later, the union expanded to include other German, Danish, Pomeranian, Prussian and Scandinavian ports. At its peak in the 15th century, the Hansa was a commercial and military power, and the most powerful cities of the union were richer and more politically influential than entire states and their monarchs. Some cities were practically separate states, including the great Gdańsk (initially belonging to the Teutonic State-Prussia) or the rich Lübeck, which remained the seat of the union's meetings.
Tumblr media
Over time, competition from independent Dutch merchants weakened the position of the Hanseatic cities. Ultimately, in 1438, war broke out between the Dutch and the Hansa cities, which ultimately weakened the union, but it is worth remembering that for several centuries many cities in Western, Northern and Eastern Europe formed a kind of equivalent of today's European Union, and many cities and countries experienced their greatest prosperity at that time.

“The colourful brigade of German knights were trooped about a Castle or Palace, to draw wonder and awe from the commonalty—propping up the view of their lieges.”

What is another word for Teutonic? “Teutonic peoples such as Germans and Scandinavians and British” synonyms: Germanic. Why are the Germans called Teutons? The etymology of the name Teuton, come from the Gallic words : teuta (tribe) and ona (water). The Gauls called Teutons to most of the tribes from the East of the Elba river.
