I read the latest volume of Atom: The Beginning yesterday. It’s kind of weird and kind of fun reading this in parallel with Urasawa’s Pluto. They’re both clearly inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy, but also distinct and personal. I’m really enjoying this prequel to Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy series. I first read about Astro Boy in an issue of Comics Scene magazine back in the early-to-mid 80s. When the manga finally became available to read in the US, I became a huge fan. I’m also loving the related works like Pluto and this, created by other creators. I really like how they take Osamu Tezuka’s characters and themes and tell new stories with them without aping Tezuka’s style.
