In an extra included with Volume 21 of Atom: The Beginning is a series of drawings depicting life events for Hiroshi Ochanomizu (Dr. Ochanomizu) and Umataro Tenma (Dr. Tenma).

Of note is 3 in-universe birthdays for Atom: The Beginning (please note that this only applies for the world of Atom: The Beginning and not Astro Boy as a whole): Hiroshi Ochanomizu was born on November 3, 2011, Umataro Tenma was born on April 3, 2019, and Tobio Tenma was born on April 7, 2054.

I was re-reading some of Atom: The Beginning, and now that I’ve read Black Jack, it occurred to me…

Pink from the Vietnam arc, who speaks strangely, wears four bows in her hair, has bangs, and built a genius unlicensed robot surgeon to fight the medical establishment… is she a Pinoko reference/cameo??? The first time I read this it went right over my head since I hadn’t gotten into Black Jack, but now I can’t unsee it.

My mind… is blown… I wonder how many other references I’m still missing out on.

Here’s something a little different. You know how everyone thinks of Atom’s classic appearance when they think of him?

Well, Atom actually has quite a few outfits and so I decided to share a few I like! Of course, I will use examples from various canons and this is just my opinion.

For the 50s manga, my favourites would definitely be Atom’s school uniform and his outfit in the Once Upon a Time arc. This could just be the art style, but the big round buttons are cute!

I also really love the clothes he wears in Once Upon a Time, Atom: The Beginning also has this outfit in Tetsuro Kasahara’s art style!

I’ll admit that I haven’t seen much of 1963, but one episode I saw had Atom as a cowboy! He looks adorable!

1980 has a wide variety of different outfits, but they’re generally similar. I really like the yellow sweater he wears here, it suits him! There’s also a light blue version out this outfit too, Atom suits light blue and yellow.

This was also an episode in 1963, but Atom becomes captain of a space expedition to Mars! I just love the thought of someone tailoring the uniform just so it would fit Atom, and he looks great!

I’m making it a study week I guess!

Yet another panel from Atom: The Beginning vol.3! Tetsuro Kasahara chooses a lot of fun angles and poses for his drawings. I went for a pencil drawing so I could do more corrections today, since the previous two were in permanent mediums. It still went off in a bunch of places (a few that stick out to me—I can spot Hiroshi’s left arm from the elbow to the forearm is angled wrong, as well as his torso being slightly too short and the x-pattern on the shirt being too thin, and Umataro’s head is larger than it should be… a fitting mistake for him, I guess) but I’m glad I stuck it out for a while. It’s getting late though 😴

There are multiple versions and adaptations of Astro Boy:

Ambassador Atom (also known as Captain Atom) ~ April 1951 - March 1952

The first appearance of Astro Boy! Atom was not the main character in this manga, but he became very popular through this manga. It was because of Atom’s appearance in this manga that we got the Astro Boy manga! This was authored by Osamu Tezuka.

Astro Boy ~ April 3, 1952 - March 12, 1968

The manga for Astro Boy, and where the Atom we know and love came to be! This was authored by Osamu Tezuka.

Mighty Atom (tokusatsu series) ~ March 7, 1959 - May 28, 1960

The first television adaptation of Astro Boy! It is a live-action version of the manga.

Astro Boy (1963 series) ~ January 1, 1963 - December 31, 1966

The first animated television adaptation of Astro Boy! It’s a long series: 193 episodes!

This was the first regularly running half-hour anime ever produced! It was also the first widely popular Japanese animated series ever. Without the 1963 Astro Boy series, anime as we know it would likely not exist.

It was produced with direct involvement by Osamu Tezuka and his company, Mushi Production (he later went on to form Tezuka Productions).

Astro Boy (1980 series) ~ October 1, 1980 - December 23, 1981

The second animated television adaptation of Astro Boy! This was the second and final TV anime of Astro Boy produced with direct involvement by Osamu Tezuka. It was produced by Tezuka Productions and is a much shorter anime: 52 episodes.

Astro Boy (2003 series) ~ April 6, 2003 - March 28, 2004

The third Astro Boy anime! It was the first Astro Boy anime produced after Osamu Tezuka’s passing and one of the last anime to use cel animation. It was produced by Tezuka Productions, has 50 episodes, and is a very popular adaptation of Astro Boy!

Pluto ~ Manga: September 9, 2003 - April 5, 2009; Anime: October 26, 2023

A manga adaptation of one of the popular arcs from the Astro Boy manga (The Greatest Robot in the World)! It was authored by Naoki Urasawa, co-authored by Takashi Nagasaki, and supervised by Macoto Tezka who is Osamu Tezuka’s son!

An anime adaptation was announced in 2017 and confirmed in early 2023! All 8 episodes debuted on Netflix worldwide on October 26, 2023; each episode is about an hour long and covers 1 manga volume per episode.

Astro Boy (2009 film) ~ October 8, 2009 (Hong Kong premiere), October 23, 2009 (United States premiere)

The widely released feature length 3D animated film for Astro Boy! It was very popular at the time of release. It was produced by Hong Kong based Imagi Animation Studios.

Little Astro Boy ~ March 22, 2014 - April 26, 2014

The first overseas Astro Boy animated adaptation! While it was produced by Tezuka Productions, it was also produced by Yomiuri TV Enterprises in partnership with Nigerian broadcaster Channels TV. It debuted first in Nigeria in 2014, before being released in Japan on a DVD set on November 3, 2015.

It is geared towards preschoolers. It is a short series, running for only 8 eleven minute episodes. It can be watched in full in only about 90 minutes!

Atom: The Beginning ~ Manga: December 1, 2014 - present; Anime: April 15, 2017 - July 8, 2017

A prequel manga series to Astro Boy, authored by Tetsuro Kasahara! It has been serialized since December 1, 2014 and is still running! The first officially translated into English volume was released in North America in October 2022 and there are new volumes currently being released.

A 12 episode anime adaptation was made by OLM, Production I.G, and Signal.MD in 2017.

Go Astro Boy Go! ~ August 2, 2019 (first worldwide premiere), October 3, 2019 - October 1, 2020 (Japan airing)

The second overseas Astro Boy series! It was almost entirely produced by Planet Nemo Animation and Play Big + Something Big; Tezuka Productions had an assistant role with the series.

Like Little Astro Boy, it is geared towards young kids. It has 52 episodes which run about 13 minutes each. 51 episodes aired in Japan.

Astro Boy Reboot ~ Release date to be determined

There is even more Astro Boy coming out! A third Astro Boy overseas adaptation was announced in June 2022 by Shibuya Productions called Astro Boy Reboot. A release date for it has yet to be determined, but it’s still being made!

There was an old version of Astro Boy Reboot announced in June 2014, but it was cancelled in favor of this new version of Astro Boy Reboot which is being directed by Thomas Astruc.

There are many adaptations of Astro Boy! There’s even a few other ones that I didn’t mention here, but these are the main ones. Choose one, dive in, and enjoy. :)

I need help with the astro boy series, idk where to start, I knew about astro boy like years ago but have just started picking up atom the beginning recently, fell in love with it and wanted to explore more about its history😭😭😭
