useful information: How to get a USB Blu-Ray player to work on your computer

Not a post about vintage technology, just an explanation of what you think might be simple to do but isn't: There are Blu-Ray players that plug into your computer by USB, and you discover that just plugging it in doesn't make it work* in the same manner that CD-RWs or DVD-RWs are automatically recognised and function. You will see "BR Drive" in My Computer and the name of whatever movie you have inserted, but that's as far as you're able to go.

*There is software you can buy to make a Blu-Ray (internal or external) function, sure, and if an internal came with your computer it's likely already installed -- but if you're like me you don't have that software, you're cheap and won't pay for software, and you want to use what you have installed already or find free solutions.

Looking in the Blu-Ray drive's package, there's not a lot of info about what you're supposed to do. The above no-name Blu-Ray player cost $40 from a popular website; name-brand ones can set you back $120 or so. Looking around online for those instructions, I never saw the whole set of directions in one place, I had to cobble them together from 2 or 3 sites. And so here I share that list. To keep out of trouble, I'm not linking any files -- Google will help you.

Get VLC, the free video player available for pretty much any operating system. Thing is, it doesn't come with the internals to make it work with Blu-Ray even if when you go to the Play Media menu there is a radio button for selecting Blu-Ray.

Get MakeMKV, a decoder for reading Blu-Ray disks. This had been totally free during the beta testing period but it's come out and has a month or two trial period you can work in.

Get Java if you don't already have it. Reason for this is, the menu systems on Blu-Ray disks uses this... technically it's not required, however it does mean you don't have options such as special features, language and sound changes, or scene selection if you don't have Java installed; insert a disk, it can only play the movie.

Get the file libaacs.dll online so you have AACS decoding. I am told it hasn't been updated in awhile so there may be disks produced after 2013 that won't work right, but you won't know until you try.

There's a set of keys you will also want to have so that the player knows how to work with specific disks, and so do a search online for the "FindVUK Online Database". There will be a regularly-updated keydb.cfg archive file on that page to pick up.

Got those three programs installed and the other two files obtained? Okay, here are your instructions for assembly...

In VLC: go to Tools, Prefs, click "show all"… under the Input/Codecs heading is Access Modules then Blu-Ray: Select your region, A through C. You can change this if you need to for foreign disks. Next related action: go to My Computer and C:, click into Program Files and VLC, and this is where you copy the libaacs.dll file to.

In MakeMKV: click View, then Preferences, and under Integration - add VLC.

Confirm that Java is set up to work with VLC by going to the computer's Control Panel, going to System Properties, and into Environment Variables. Click System Variables, and click New to create this key if it doesn't already exist: … Name: Java … Value: [the location of the Java 'jre#.##' folder... use Browse to find it in C:\Program Files\Java]

Let's go back into My Computer and C:, this time go to Program Data, and then do a right-click in the window and select New and Folder. Rename this folder "aacs" (without the quotes), and then you click into it and copy the keydb.cfg file here.

REBOOT.

And now you should be able to recognise Blu-Ray disks in your player and play them. Three troubleshooting notes to offer in VLC:

"Disk corrupt" -- this means MakeMKV has not decoded and parsed the disk yet, or that you don't have the libaacs.dll in place so that it can decode the disk. ...After checking the VLC folder for the DLL to make sure, launch MakeMKV, then go to File, Play Disk, and select the Blu-Ray drive. Now it will grind a bit and figure out the disk's contents.

A note appears when a movie starts saying there will be no menus, but the movie plays fine -- Java isn't running. ...Invoke Java by going to the Java Settings in Start: Programs. You don't have to change anything here, so Exit, then eject the disk and put it back in to see if the movie's menu now appears.

Buffering between chapters, making the movie pause for a few seconds? There is a setting for this but I need to find that info page again for where that is. (If you find it, tell me where it is!)

I don't claim to know a lot but if you have any questions I might have some answers or suggestions. So far I've watched "Office Space" and Disney's "Coco" without any issues beside occasional buffering.

Hello, and Merry Christmas to those who celebrate~! Otherwise, Happy Holidays! I am here to share the English subtitles for more MoriMyu~!

Oh gosh, I apologize for such a long wait...! Life just punched me around a bit with studying for board exams (which I passed, thankfully!), a bit of technical problems with the BD version, and a lot of real life things I needed to take care of before the year ends (￣▽￣*)ゞ

Op. 4 covers chapters 33-47 of the original comic, with a few scenes/moments omitted. It is essentially the build-up to the climax of the story that was covered in Op. 5! We were also blessed with the addition of Miss Mary Morstan and Adam Whiteley for this musical, and I hope everyone falls in love with them, too~!

Anyway, here are the subs~! A huge, huge thank you to @mouldering for helping me with proof-reading and quality checking! So I've kind of been obsessing over The Crow since watching it for the first time last Friday.

I cannot believe it took me this long to watch it because it is so up my alley and once I get a physical copy that can work in my blu-ray player (I bought a 4K and didn't realize until I'd opened it), I can totally see this becoming a comfort movie.

But I want to talk about what might be my favorite scene in the movie.

Which may seem an odd choice compared to something like the scene at the pawn shop, where we get to see Eric have a little fun...his humor and personality come through along with the menace.

But this scene with Eric and Tin Tin?

It is fantastic.

I love how it starts with Eric experimenting...testing to see how far he can go...ending with that maniacal, gleeful laugh when he discovers he is impervious to harm.

But it gets really good when he confronts Tin Tin.

When you see him through the fire, he's like an animal. He has his prey in sight, and nothing will get in his way.

He is being fueled purely by his rage.

And when he screams: "MURDERER!!!" at Tin Tin, it legit gives me chills.

And then the dialogue between them starts and he switches. He is no longer being fueled by rage alone...now the pain is starting to creep in. But the pain is keeping his rage in check...for now. And I find it interesting that it almost seems to physically hurt him when Tin Tin starts talking about what he did to Shelly. Which of course, is what gives Tin Tin the brief upper hand in the fight.

But he's fighting a temporarily immortal being, and so that upper hand doesn't last. I'm obsessed with the way Eric avoids the knives (I guess you missed Tin Tin) and how he turns the table to take his first act of vengeance.

I lot of the reason I love this scene really comes down to Brandon Lee's performance. Like I said earlier, this is his rage and pain laid bare and Brandon Lee did such an outstanding job and physicalizing it and making it so palpable. Again, hearing about the pain Shelly went through seems to physically hurt him (which we also see in later scenes)...and I interpret the story as Eric came back to avenge Shelly's death, not his own.

And the other reason I love this scene is the fight choreography. Of the four villains Eric goes after, Tin Tin is really the only one who put up a fight (I know Fun Boy's scene was longer where they actually fought once Darla left), and so that makes the scene a bit more interesting to watch. But the fight is very raw and rough...I appreciate the fact that the fight wasn't "perfect", even though they could have easily done it, considering all of Brandon Lee's skills. And the knife work is really cool, culminating in that final blow with "Victims. Aren't we all?"

I am so happy I finally got to see this movie.

And if you're looking for something to watch this Halloween season, I highly recommend this one!

In the near future, video games have evolved to a point where they are able to biologically interact with players through the use of an electronic umbilical cord. I don’t usually swear but FUCK DRM on blu ray discs. Rant under the cut.

spent $50 on a disc drive that I could plug into my laptop that could play dvd and blu ray discs. (because my normal player doesn’t want to communicate with my laptop.)

DVD works perfectly. I move on to testing it with a blu ray disc to see if I need to download a software that can handle blu ray. Doesn’t work.

I try two new, rather sus, softwares the user guide recommended. Nope. Doesn’t work.

At this point I ask my friend who’s training to be an IT person.

I show them the issue and what pops up. They find something that’s supposed to fic VLC media player so it can play blu ray discs.

I give them remote access to my laptop so they can do that, because it was too much to walk me though.

They spend at least a half hour doing that.

NOPE. Still doesn’t work. We try a few more things and download 3 or 4 new softwares to try. We try a different blu ray disc. Even the most recommended shady software they found.

NOPE.

NOTHING. WORKED.

Nothing could get around the DRM. (Digital rights management, I just learned a tiny bit about it. It’s so stupid.)

I’m screaming. My friend who tried to help is too.

I just wanted to be able to watch the hobbit extended edition when I’m not home and to be able to privately stream it to friends. I wasn’t actually even going to violate the copyright.

I am a disappointed puddle and going to try to get ready for bed and maybe sleep now. 😔😭

Very cool! I'm sure my international friends will be glad, especially about the region free! (I, myself, bought a region-free DVD player a while back for the international versions of the 1st and 2nd seasons of Quantum Leap (the music is everything).

I'm guessing since Walker isn't really a big enough property, they couldn't do multiple languages, which is too bad.

Was considering buying (ridiculously overpriced) Sunny blu-rays to (very, very legally) rip them (for Personal Use archival purposes), decided to test on a blu-ray I already own, realized my external drive only reads DVDs, successfully ripped a DVD, but then was sent down a rabbit hole trying to see if I could use my (again, very, very legally) hacked PS3 to rip the .iso (I can) since it is indeed a blu-ray player with an attached PC-adjacent machine...

Long story short. If you see me spending $70 on seasons 1-5 on DVD and 6 on blu-ray, no you didn't, but also expect a 1080p season 6 bloopers upload in the near future.

The Saga of Me Trying To Watch the Leverage s5 Commentary (Legally) With My Mom

Okay, so for a while my family has owned one copy of “Leverage: The Complete Series” on DVD which I bought new as a present for my sister, as well as individual copies of seasons 1 through 4 which I picked up secondhand at my favorite thrift shop. We discovered pretty early on (before we found the secondhand copies) that The Complete Series disks didn’t like certain DVD players, including my parents’ DVD/BD machine, so I brought my old DVD/BD player over to my parents’ place where we watch TV on Saturdays.

This is a disk player that I bought in maybe 2012 or 2013. And it had been showing signs of its age since, oh, 2017? It sometimes likes to stop working until it can have a rest in a cool place and not be used for a while and then it works again. The last time it stopped working, maybe during s3?, I tried to play The Complete Series disks in my parents’ player again and went “oh right, that doesn’t work” so I tried the secondhand disks and they were fine, so we’ve been using their player since then. It’s also old and has been known to do things like skip, and eat disks, but since we gave it a nice airy heat-conductive muffin tin to sit on, it’s been pretty reliable.

I forgot about this whole thing until we tried to start Season 5 and the Complete Series disk, of course, still did not like that player.

I was like “No biggie, my player has probably had enough of a rest, we can switch back to that!”

That worked for about half an episode, and there were some laggy bits in there, before it stopped playing entirely.

So obviously I was like “well I will get a new disk player,” because the players were old and I thought the chances were good that a new player would have a better chance of being compatible with picky disks.

The new player arrived! I installed it! The Complete Series S5 Disk 1 completely failed to play!

(This is my mom’s second watch-through and my third, but our first with commentary. Usually we spend two weeks on an episode, commentary the first week and regular audio the next, and since we started s5 we have been listening to pirated commentary audio by itself on the first week [I feel zero bad about this, WE OWN THE DISKS] and watching the regular episode on freevee on my laptop the second week. Not getting any visuals with the commentary and getting commercials in the episode is annoying, but it’s a net pleasant experience still.)

My first reaction was, “Okay, I need some new disks,” but my search of Amazon came up with a $57 dollar option, a zone 2 copy, and not much else, so I decided to explore other avenues for a while first.

So I was like “Well if the new player isn’t working, but an older one did, I should use The Oldest Player I Have” which is the DVD drive that I pried out of the premade desktop I bought in 2008 after it died. That drive. Is. Solid. It is the most reliable disk player in my life. Possibly because it lives in a drawer most of the time because it’s annoying to set up and won’t play my blu-rays. But it laughs in the face of scratches. I tested it out with another disk and it worked fine.

Confidently, I brought it over to my parents’ place, set it up with its special powered converter cable, plugged it into my computer, and put the disk in!

Nothing happened! No good!

I considered hulking out, but ultimately thought it was time to cough up the $57 instead.

This time, when I searched, there was a nice friendly $18 option, with nothing in the description about zones, which has bit me in the ass before, but it’s $18, I figured, so I bought them. (I think the S5 search was a little wonky because the cover just says The Final Season, but they fixed it I guess.)

Today they arrived!

The player I have access to right now is my old 2008 DVD drive, so I set it up with my laptop and opened it up. The Complete Series S5 Disk 1 got forgotten in there! I set it aside and put in The Final Season Disk 1.

No good!

I tried the second disk.

Would not open!

SAD.

And then I was like, “okay, if there is something the matter that is not with the drive or the disk, what could it be? It could be a zone issue after all.”

BUT THEN I remembered that when I had done the test run before bringing the old drive to my parents’ place, I had plugged the USB cable into the LEFT USB port on my laptop, and the subsequent attempts, I had plugged it into the RIGHT USB port.

I switched the cable to the other port, and the new disks played!!!!!! YES! THEY LIVE!!!

And then I was like “If this was the problem the entire time, I am going to feel Very Silly about buying the season over again when the problem was my right-hand USB port” but I had The Complete Series S5 Disk 1 right there, because I’d accidentally left it in the drive. So I put it back in the drive!

I have never been so happy to have confirmation that something is broken. The disk did NOT play. The purchase of the new season was worthwhile! There is something more functional about the new set of disks over the old one.

Hopefully the new disks will play in at least one of the two players currently in residence at my parents’ house, but just in case, I will bring my Oldest Drive too.

And I don’t regret buying the new disk player either, because I like personally owning a machine that plays blu-rays and was manufactured this decade. And also Good Omens 2 is coming out soon and we learned with the first season that my parents’ smart TV does not get along perfectly well with Amazon Prime. I’m hoping the new player will prove its worth by doing that job better.

i'm thinking of doing a build rewatch because i'm missing my bf banjou and the experience of Muto's Wild Ride, but i don't feel like wading through the pool of ads on kissasian or sites equivalent again lol. internet archive actually has the full series but it's tv-nihon which isn't really my taste. 

you've never never steered me wrong before, so i thought i'd ask you which sub group you'd recommend and where to acquire them? while i'd prefer without torrenting bc i don't have that set up on my computer at the moment, i'm open to suggestions for the future!

hmm... well, for sub groups i'd recommend over-time, but excluding torrenting and ad-infested streaming sites there's not a ton of options out there

speaking of internet archive tho, i did find this link which has the full series from ozc-live (archive(.)org/details/ozc-live-kamen-rider-build-bd-box-complete-series-720p), who basically just take subs from other groups and attaches them onto blu-ray raws for maximum quality. the issue is, because it's softsubs, the subtitles don't appear in the video player, but if you download the episodes and play them in a video player that's compatible with .mkv files like VLC, the over-time subs show up no problem. since torrenting's not an option for you at the moment, you can direct download them individually from this page (archive(.)org/download/ozc-live-kamen-rider-build-bd-box-complete-series-720p) by clicking the .mkv files specifically (the subs don't work with the .mp4 files). i just downloaded episode 1 to test it to make sure it worked

i know that's not as ideal as just having all the episodes ready to go at once and im not sure if that'll mesh with your setup, but i can't think of more alternatives off the top of my head. i hope this helps!

Jesse Malin Finds the Light (+ sidelong musings)

Greener pastures always wait for you You can make it tonight

So ends the Jesse Malin song Greener Pastures, here the final track on his "Chasing the Light (Live)" CD released this past spring (the package also comes with a Blu-Ray disc of performances with an alternate slate of songs). The lines close the book on a record themed with overcoming obstacles to live one's life, while looking both forward and back on what life has delivered.

What life has delivered to Malin - a vibrant indie rock/club figure in New York City, 57 years of age with 4 decades in the business - was a rare spinal cord stroke late spring of 2023, that left him paralyzed from the waist down. This is a performer who works a room old school and interactively, traversing crowds for a deeper connection, leaving the stage breathless like the best performers often do.

The album's songs and their sequence feel purposefully rueful and ultimately hopeful (Malin remains unfailingly positive), and are punctuated with the joyful kind of playing that Malin pulls from his band. Recorded live, albeit sans actual crowds - the sleeve cites "no overdubs" but there were more than one takes. Regardless, the sound is crisp and the vibe is fluid, highlighting the capabilities of the players and the subtle musical depth to the songs themselves.

A trio of tunes that open and close the record tightrope across its themes as well, with the excellent opener State of the Art setting the tone (and aided by Tommy Stinson's garage-raw rhythm guitar contribution); later Malin gets Stonesy with Meet Me At the End of the World, and then finishes with the folkier, poignant Greener Pastures.

Jesse may indeed be chasing the light given the physical hit he took, but this record is another example of him bringing the light to us. And this was just a beginning - in late June, a show (including multiple guests) at the Beacon Theater in NYC on 12/1 was announced, which sold out, and 2nd show on 12/2 was added. I don't know if the extensive physical therapy Malin has been undergoing in Argentina has changed much, but I will be at that 12/1 show to see for myself. Pearl Jam's Grab Bag

For any believer still paying attention, Pearl Jam has released 5 solid records starting with 2006's eponymously named pseudo-return to form, with the recent "Dark Matter" rounding out the set. I occasionally find myself thinking that Eddie Vedder's powerful baritone can leaden their sound at times, but the band is skin tight and Mike McCready's guitar leads are nimble and reliable, and all of that continues on the latest offering.

I also felt they might have been dabbling and/or having fun with both contemporary and influential artist sounds within their own battle-tested framework on this record. There are several examples, so choosing one, the radio released Wreckage, and its Tom Petty samplings.

The song in general espouses the chiming timbres of Petty's signature work, along with backing vocals echoing both Heartbreakers and solo Petty recordings, perhaps leaning towards the Jeff Lynne-produced choral flavors of the solo albums. More specifically, starting at 2:20, the guitar break hints at what later culminates with a riff from Petty's Learning to Fly (after a series of Vedder's signature emoting) from 3:55-4:05, and echoed in the ending notes of the song. Otherwise, the backing chorals adroitly bring stylings of both Petty and Guided by Voices' lead man Robert Pollard together, Pollard having spent a period opening for Pearl Jam some 15+ years ago that retains its impact.

And finally...

Low Cut Connie is a Philadelphia-based band fronted and driven by Adam Weiner, and 2020's Private Lives was an unexpected career milestone that merits discovery and multiple listens. So I found myself surprised to have missed the 2023 follow up "Art Dealers."

And if not as memorable as "Private Lives" the record achieves as an encouraging follow up and reimagining of the previous record's sweet spots. While the results lean a little more Elton John than Jerry Lee Lewis, the passion remains and the sonic palette expanded. Two samples:
