Building a tree from a will...
When Sarah Sidney, my 4th great-aunt, married for the first time in 1827, her groom was a widower, William Abbott. Their union only lasted six years before he died on December 15, 18331 and I know little about him. His will2, however, the final one in the series mentioned to me by Jon over on RootsChat, gives me a couple of clues.  Let’s take a look at his probate package, which includes the…

Welp people, happy fucking day to the recently deceased Mrs. Westenra, who did this shit:
the whole estate, real and personal, was left absolutely to Arthur Holmwood. When he had told us so much he went on:— "Frankly we did our best to prevent such a testamentary disposition, and pointed out certain contingencies that might leave her daughter either penniless or not so free as she should be to act regarding a matrimonial alliance. Indeed, we pressed the matter so far that we almost came into collision, for she asked us if we were or were not prepared to carry out her wishes.
And left Lucy technically homeless, and without a single penny to her name. I still try to wrap my head around the watsonian explanation for this move (because the doylist explanation lays on Van Helsing getting an easy access to Lucy's personal papers in a non suspicious manner while also not leaving any kind of loose plot threads) because good lord, this old woman really trapped Lucy with the suitor she chose.
Mrs. Westenra really put Lucy in the position of either marrying Arthur even if she had changed her mind, or living in the streets without anything to her name.
Thanks all the stars that Arthur is one of the best loving men in all of London because this legal situation; that was heavily discouraged by the solicitors, may as well be the perfect set up for an abusive relationship if Lucy had survived, and if this was another kind of Gothic novel.
The underlying infantilization of Lucy by her mother, and how she chose to plan the will reveals how this woman never thought of her daughter as a young lady ready for marriage, but as a child passing from one caretaker to another. If so, why not leave anything to Lucy? Mrs. Westenra may be moved more as a plot device than a character through the course of the novel, but her character is very consistent in how she treated Lucy, and how Lucy answered to her ubtil they died.

mad about dodo: the bachelor no one asked for... challenge 🌴🩷🌞
i know this is - probably - a mistake. but i can't help myself 😶 after watching dodo fail three attempts in bachelor/bachelorette challenges; deeply inspired by nafisa's bc (@flocy-sims); and somewhat persuaded that dodo needed his time to shine, am i right, @ethicaltreatmentofcowplants 😉? i decided to give dodo a bachelor challenge of his own.
who is dodo?
dodo, short for orlando harper, is a 7th generation spare. twin brother of the one and only, leonardo harper, and son of virginia harper and paolo rocca.
dodo is a sports enthusiast, being himself a one-star famous athlete. despite not having the ambitious and selfish nature of his twin brother and superstar actor, leo harper; orlando can be a somewhat attention seeker as well.
there’s nothing he loves more than to spend time at the gym or the football field. he’s not the romantic type... IN FACT, he performed many mean behaviours with all the bachelor and bachelorettes he interacted with 🙄 so i wonder, is there someone out there who could sweep dodo off his feet? that's what we'll find out, right?
important notes
the bachelor challenge will take place on sulani and will follow the island challenge's rules (with some adaptations here and there).
the bachelor and contestants will live off-the-grid and with just very basic survival items. they can’t leave the island (lot) and they are cut off from civilization completely.
first impressions + wicked whims will be in effect (but no adult content will ever be published). we'll be having rose cerimonies, solo dates, group dates and free days schedules. until we have only 7 sims left in the challenge, 3 sims will leave by round. also, leo harper is gonna try to steal the show once in a while 😄
submission rules
open to up to 21 contestants
no occults allowed
all sims/genders/sexualities are welcome
all previously existing skills will be erased to level 0
give them likes and dislikes at your will
only one outfit per category - remember they are on a deserted island so no polish attire is advised ;)
cc allowed to the amount of your desire, but keep it maxis match (i have all expansions, packs, stuff, so no worries)
give your sim a brief, medium or testamentary backstory (i will read everything!)
please tag me and use the tag #madaboutdodo with your entry! no deadline until i have all spots filled.
if you have any questions about it, feel free to send me a dm or leave a comment :) thank you so much!

During lunch he told us that Mrs. Westenra had for some time expected sudden death from her heart, and had put her affairs in absolute order; he informed us that, with the exception of a certain entailed property of Lucy's father's which now, in default of direct issue, went back to a distant branch of the family, the whole estate, real and personal, was left absolutely to Arthur Holmwood. Of course, we had then no alternative but to accept. We were right in principle, and ninety-nine times out of a hundred we should have proved, by the logic of events, the accuracy of our judgment. Frankly, however, I must admit that in this case any other form of disposition would have rendered impossible the carrying out of her wishes. For by her predeceasing her daughter the latter would have come into possession of the property, and, even had she only survived her mother by five minutes, her property would, in case there were no will—and a will was a practical impossibility in such a case—have been treated at her decease as under intestacy. In which case Lord Godalming, though so dear a friend, would have had no claim in the world; and the inheritors, being remote, would not be likely to abandon their just rights, for sentimental reasons regarding an entire stranger. I assure you, my dear sirs, I am rejoiced at the result, perfectly rejoiced."
The way Stoker makes a point of lampshading Mrs. Westenra's bonkers will by having the lawyer go "well we argued against it and here's why", but then justified the necessity to the plot by having the lawyer go "but in this situation it was actually the one time it turned out most convenient, and here's why" is actually pretty fun.
Doesn't really go far in explaining why Mrs. Westenra would be so insistent on it to the point of leaving nothing directly to her actual daughter, but...

“It seems like she [ Elizabeth of Poland ] already prepared one will, during her first years of stay in Poland, but only the above-mentioned [ made in April 6th 1380 ] survived, which is by all means interesting. At the beginning, Elizabeth states that she wants to be buried in the Poor Clares monastery in Óbuda, which she founded and not in the royal graves in Szekesfehervar [ ... ]. She recommends the care of peace of her soul to her son and daughter-in-law, to whom she also entrusts the protection of her favourite monastery. Then there are bequeaths for the royal family, monasteries and courtiers and from them we can learn not only about the wealth of Elizabeth's treasury, but also about many beautiful features of her character.
Her son, Louis, receives several golden vessels, among them a cup, a gift from Naples on which next to the figure of Saint Ladislaus and the Hungarian count of arms, there was also engraved Polish eagle and then relics, except for a painting supposedly painted by Saint Louis, which was received by Poor Clares. To her daughter-in-law Elizabeth she leaves her castle in Óbuda and then her valuables and one of her breviaries, on which she used to pray. The granddaughter, Mary, receives golden tiara decorated with two eagles and a necklace, the second, Jadwiga receives a tiara with lilies and necklace with costly stones. Elizabeth also does not forget about Jadwiga, an orphan from her brother Casimir, who was still hiding in Buda castle, and leaves her the same tiara as the previous two.
Then Elizabeth disposes of her money, from which, after paying off her debtors, she allocates 500 gold florins for exequies after her death and 2,000 for funeral costs of her granddaughter after her son Stephen, the recently deceased Elizabeth, whose body she orders to be brought to Buda. Elizabeth also provides generously to her courtiers: Jan, the provost of Buda receives 400, knight Jakisz 300, page Ladislaus 200 gold florins, Klara de Pukar receives a village, a cart and 6 horses, 400 silver fines and the Queen's second breviary, which, however, Poor Clares are to receive after her death.
What is left after providing the Queen's confessor and a few other courtiers, jewels, dishes, robs, decorations, utensils and 1,000 golden florins is to be distributed equally among all the Queen's courtiers, both Polish and Hungarian. Pages and other courtiers who do not receive separate salery receives 1,000 florins and all the Queen's carriage horses, except six, which will accompany her funeral.
Finally, there are bequests for churches, in which she supplies all the Dominican, Franciscan and Augustinian monasteries throughout Hungary and a number of other temples. Having entrusted her ladies-in waiting to her daughter-in-law and her courtiers to her son, she asks him to not hold menagers of her estates and treasures responsible on the basis of false accusations, because they are trustworthy people, at the same time she hereby cancels all her previous testamentary decrees. She also appoints the executors of her will, including Cardinal Demtrius of Esztergom and her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth. To be sure, two copies of the will were prepared, one of them remained at court and the other was given to the Poor Clares in Óbuda for safekeeping...” — Jan Dąbrowski “Elżbieta Łokietkówna”

Nina reads Dracula 🦇
September 21st 💜🕊️🎂
Happy birthday to me! Let’s all celebrate at Lucy’s funeral. 🎉
"She makes a very beautiful corpse, sir. It's quite a privilege to attend on her. It's not too much to say that she will do credit to our establishment!"
Mayyybe keep that thought to yourself.
I noticed that Van Helsing never kept far away. This was possible from the disordered state of things in the household. There were no relatives at hand; and as Arthur had to be back the next day to attend at his father's funeral, we were unable to notify any one who should have been bidden.
Someone hold him
You forget that I am a lawyer as well as a doctor.
In another life, Van Helsing was Dracula’s pet sollicitor…
For me, I watch here in the room and in Miss Lucy's old room all night, and I myself search for what may be. It is not well that her very thoughts go into the hands of strangers.
OK I really like him.
I want to cut off her head and take out her heart.
GDHJSKSLSKSJS OKAY
Friend John, I pity your poor bleeding heart; and I love you the more because it does so bleed. If I could, I would take on myself the burden that you do bear. But there are things that you know not, but that you shall know, and bless me for knowing, though they are not pleasant things.
Mayyybe do not keep these thoughts to yourself.
"You need not trouble about the knives; we shall not do it."
"Why not?" I asked. For his solemnity of the night before had greatly impressed me.
"Because," he said sternly, "it is too late—or too early. See!" Here he held up the little golden crucifix. "This was stolen in the night."
"How, stolen," I asked in wonder, "since you have it now?"
"Because I get it back from the worthless wretch who stole it, from the woman who robbed the dead and the living. Her punishment will surely come, but not through me; she knew not altogether what she did and thus unknowing, she only stole. Now we must wait."
The readers wondered why Van Helsing would not trust the maids.
Oooooh but he was right all along!!!
When he had told us so much he went on:—
"Frankly we did our best to prevent such a testamentary disposition, and pointed out certain contingencies that might leave her daughter either penniless or not so free as she should be to act regarding a matrimonial alliance. Indeed, we pressed the matter so far that we almost came into collision, for she asked us if we were or were not prepared to carry out her wishes.
She must have known, somehow. Damn this is sad.
I did so, and left him at the door of the room, as I felt he would like to be quite alone with her, but he took my arm and led me in, saying huskily:—
"You loved her too, old fellow; she told me all about it, and there was no friend had a closer place in her heart than you. I don't know how to thank you for all you have done for her. I can't think yet...."
Dracula characters: raising the bar for men since 1897
"Jack, is she really dead?"
Tumblr media
"I only used that name because I was in doubt. I must not call you 'Mr.,' and I have grown to love you—yes, my dear boy, to love you—as Arthur."
Arthur held out his hand, and took the old man's warmly.
Van Helsing strikes me as very lonely, and therefore distrustful of the people around him, while also craving their warmth… I don’t know if we get to learn more about his past, but something tells me he did not get the same kindness the locals showed Jonathan during his first encounter with the paranormal, and that left him stunted, in a way.
Perhaps this is part of the reason he doesn’t tell Jack the truth. So he can feel needed. Hmm.
"Call me what you will," he said. "I hope I may always have the title of a friend. And let me say that I am at a loss for words to thank you for your goodness to my poor dear." He paused a moment, and went on: "I know that she understood your goodness even better than I do; and if I was rude or in any way wanting at that time you acted so—you remember"—the Professor nodded—"you must forgive me."
You know, I’ve seen people complain Arthur doesn’t get a lot of personality, and I don’t necessarily disagree: he has one dominant characteristic, and that is his grief.
But isn’t it beautiful to be defined by what you’ve loved and lost?
"And as it is all yours, you have a right to deal with it as you will. I want you to give me permission to read all Miss Lucy's papers and letters. Believe me, it is no idle curiosity. I have a motive of which, be sure, she would have approved. I have them all here. I took them before we knew that all was yours, so that no strange hand might touch them—no strange eye look through words into her soul. I shall keep them, if I may; even you may not see them yet, but I shall keep them safe. No word shall be lost; and in the good time I shall give them back to you. It's a hard thing I ask, but you will do it, will you not, for Lucy's sake?"
🥺
"And you are right. There will be pain for us all; but it will not be all pain, nor will this pain be the last. We and you too—you most of all, my dear boy—will have to pass through the bitter water before we reach the sweet. But we must be brave of heart and unselfish, and do our duty, and all will be well!"
HELL YEAH TO THAT
… Is Quincey still outside? Does he even know Lucy’s dead???

There's a Silver Lining Through the Dark Clouds Shining pt 4
Because @sneverussape asked what would happen :)
“Well, there’s something you don’t see every day.” Tobias Snape commented mildly, catching sight of Severus on one of the beds. “All right, lad?”
Severus stared for a moment, taking in the sight of Tobias Snape in…in robes. He looked…he just looked big next to the headmaster, the clearly magical tailoring showing off his height and the breadth of his shoulders. Of course, Severus thought, he’d inherited his build from his mother. If he’d taken after his dad he wouldn’t need the steps to get things off most higher shelves.
“All right, Da.” Severus answered automatically.
“And that’s got to be the Potter boy. I’d recognize that nose anywhere.” Tobias continued as if blithely unaware of the sensation he caused.
Potter, of course, tried to look cross-eyed down at his nose. He possessed all the subtlety of that troll that almost finished him off last year.
“Handy, this is.” Tobias commented to the headmaster. “Now I don’t have to ask you to go hunting the lad down.”
Why would his father have anything to do with Potter?
“Or Russ, of course, as it seems he hasn’t read his post or a newspaper in the last four months.”
Would the infuriating man actually explain anything?
“Your gran’s gone and upset all the, er, blood purists, are they?”
“How, Da?” Oh, this would not be good.
It might, however, be hugely entertaining. And it certainly wouldn’t be dull, so there was that.
“Well, it seems that if one of those old families is dying out, then the magic might find the best family member without magic and…elevate them to head of the family. That’s what I could make of the explanation they gave your gran, in any case.”
“Nan’s…” Severus blinked.
“Head of the Fairchild family now. And, er, she’s got quite a bit of magic. Certainly took her by surprise, but the family wand works for her.”
Severus thought furiously for a moment. The Fairchilds were a rather reclusive family, rumored to have produced Squibs in the last few generations. Nan had that tea set from her own Mam with the crest on it.
Nan…she wouldn’t have to be an OAP, hoping she’d have enough for the electric meter and meals and neither would Da. They’d be taken care of. And…and they’d live longer now, in the magical world. He wouldn’t lose them, not yet. Not soon. Severus just breathed for a moment, trying to take all of it in.
“It’s a bit…”
“Oh lad, I know. It’s been in all the papers. Your lot don’t half get themselves worked up. Mam’s having the time of her life.”
He bit his lip to keep from smiling at that. What would Lucius Malfoy look like if he heard Tobias Snape criticizing the magical world? And oh how he wanted to see Nan in society. For some reason, he had the inescapable feeling she’d be like Mame Dennis in that one film Lily loved.
A vague memory of an out of the way cinema and Lily’s ‘Come on, Sev! Mum said it was funny!’ tickled at the edges of his consciousness.
“And you required Potter for…” he trailed off, hoping his Da would fill in the blank.
“Well, that’s been a right undertaking that has. Ten years I’ve been looking for the boy, since the obituary. I asked you once, but you had no idea where he’d gone.”
That answered precisely zero questions. Potter, as usual, stared gormlessly. Although…something niggled at the back of his mind. Some reason Potter wouldn’t ask questions. He didn’t know where Potter lived, but something bothered him about that.
“Lucky he’s here though. I’ll be taking both of them for the week at least.” Tobias turned to the headmaster.
“I cannot give Mr. Potter into a stranger’s custody, Mr. Snape.” Dumbledore spoke tartly, as if they’d had this argument before. “His aunt is his custodial guardian and he must remain with his family.”
“Well, that does put us in a pickle as I’m his testamentary guardian. Mrs. Dursley isn’t the one his parents chose and she acknowledged that sweet as you please this morning.” Tobias somehow seemed to grow larger in his irritation. “Lily Potter came to see me after her mam’s funeral and asked me if I would take the boy in if the worst happened. I agreed. She had everything done proper, by a solicitor who knew both worlds, and filed where it should have been filed. I’ve no idea how he was kidnapped and hidden, but he was. I have everything with me, certified by your own Ministry.”
Potter went chalk white at that little speech. Severus, spurred by some instinct he didn’t quite understand, moved to shove Potter’s head between his knees.
“Breathe,” he ordered. What the bloody hell? What had Lily been up to? Where had Da learned how to do that? Walk in like he owned the place and throw around orders.
Actually, Da probably learned that between growing up in the theater and the war. No one made an entrance like Nan. He’d just…forgotten for a bit.
Dumbledore looked like he’d got an extra-sour lemon drop as he looked through the papers Da handed over.
“So, if you could have Mr. Potter’s and Russ’ things packed and ready in an hour, I’ll be taking them with me.” The dismissal in his voice would have been clear even to Potter, Severus thought. “Thank you so much for your assistance, Headmaster. Now, has that hand been healed?”
Potter struggled upright and stared at his still-bruised hand. “Er, no, sir.”
“Madam…Pomfrey, is it? Could you?” Tobias smiled a charming smile as Madam Pomfrey flushed and got to work.
Dumbledore swept out of the hospital wing in high dudgeon.
(It was, Severus thought, an excellent strop and quite wasted on the current audience. Nan would have approved.)
Mam always said Da had a way about him that just drew one in. Well he could stop drawing in the school mediwitch. Severus watched as Pomfrey quickly healed Potter’s hand.
“It would, of course, be best to vanish and regrow the bones, but this will do. There’s some old damage that needs to be cleared up or Mr. Potter will have problems later on in life. I shouldn’t wonder if he has trouble writing due to poorly healed prior injuries.”
Madam Pomfrey, Severus remembered, never let an opportunity pass her by.
“If you have any instructions or suggestions, Madam, my mother and I will be pleased to see him properly healthy.” There went that charming smile again. “We can discuss it when I bring the lad back.”
Severus really had tried to make peace with his own inherited looks, but when Da went all charming he couldn’t help but feel put out. If he tried smiling like that he’d look like a deranged badger.
His destiny lay in brooding silence, he supposed.
“Did my mum really…” Potter trailed off, hunching his shoulders and staring at his knees.
“Yes, lad. I don’t suppose your Aunt Petunia ever told you about where she grew up?”
Severus startled when Da sat next to him on the bed. He felt like he should be…bigger next to his father.
“No sir.” Potter answered quietly.
“I didn’t think she had. I took her a bit by surprise, I reckon. Why don’t you have a look at what your mam left with me. She left a letter.” He held the sheaf of papers out to Potter.
Severus watched Potter take them and stare down at them. Who would have left him with Petunia? It made Potter make sense, though. Something from being an adult told him that. Petunia never liked questions or what the neighbors might say. Magical children were a sure way to get the neighbors talking.
“She really did want me with you. I wasn’t meant to be with my aunt at all.” Potter looked up, anguished. “I…how…”
“I reckon you’re a bit shaken. You’ll come home with us for the week and we’ll…we’ll sort something out.”
“But he hates me!” Potter bounced up off the bed to point dramatically.
“Do I? Or should that be did I?” Severus asked. “I’m not quite sure how any of this really works. I don’t think I hate you now. It’s more like resigned exasperation? As if I just know you’re going to do the most ridiculous thing possible in any situation.”
Da looked like he wanted very much to laugh. Severus recognized the crinkling around his eyes.
“Don’t tease, Russ. We’ll work that out at home, lads. Your things ought to be ready by now and it’s a long trip back. Is there anyone you’d like to tell what’s happened?”
Potter’s eyes went comically wide. “Ron and Hermione! They’ve got to know!”
“We’ll go and tell them, then, before we’re off home. Come along.”
Da stood and Severus found himself following in his wake with Potter. He’d forgotten how big Da always seemed to him. He must seem enormous to Potter, who stood head and shoulders shorter than he did.
At least Nan would be at whatever home they went to. Severus hoped she had an idea of what to do. He hadn’t any.

Reading will cases and snickering at one with a friend who's a history lecturer:
The deceased and one of the plaintiffs were two maiden ladies, who for thirty years had lived together. They had joined their incomes together and agreed to make mutual testamentary dispositions, to give the survivor all their property.
Ah yes. The friends who joined their incomes, as friends usually do.
We have concluded that these two maiden ladies were approximately as 'happy and content' as Robert Herbert and John Bramston.
Herbert was Queensland's first Premier and he 'came out' to Australia with John Bramston, his Attorney General and friend and roommate since Oxford Uni.
They lived together in in a farmhouse named Herston, a portmanteau of their surnames.
Herbert gave this explanation as to why he had not married: "It does not seem to me reasonable to tell a man who is happy and content, to marry a woman who may turn out a great disappointment."
As my mate puts it: "Although John Bramston did in the end marry, with the implication there had been some breach beforehand between him and Herbert, something was up and it perhaps broke."
