@hungarianmudkip69 recently asked @vaspider about the spread of HIV. The excellent discussion there focused largely on qualitative aspects, notably what was going on socially in the 1970s and 80s, HIV's subtlety and long incubation periods, and exponential growth (along with a great refutation of accidental needle sticks as a dominant vector).

I've got a math and physics background - I have some extremely relevant intuition, but I still prefer being able to find real-world numbers to confirm that I haven't misapplied it. I encourage checking out all the links in this post; there's a lot of great information!

We can't literally go back in time and test everyone for HIV, but it is possible to model and estimate, e.g. this 2021 report from the CDC (US-only).

The second graph of figure #2 is very close to what we discussed:

Again, these are estimates, so we can't take the exact numbers as fact, but let's look at the big picture. HIV likely first arrived in the US around 1970; it first gained public attention in 1981, when the CDC reported cases of what we now call AIDS. At that point, the estimate is an order of magnitude of tens of thousands of HIV infections.

The original asker was interested in the behavior of a "patient zero" (see also "Debunking the Myth of Patient Zero", an excellent video linked in that thread). These numbers help us see how little effect one hypothetical person's behavior could have had on the end result. As long as the virus was transmitted at all, it was going to reach the highest-risk populations eventually, and spread once there, whether it took one hop or ten. It was also essentially impossible to notice the pattern and infer the existence of HIV/AIDS in the US until multiple people in the same community developed AIDS and contracted unusual infections - which most likely means that it's reached that high-risk population, and ten years have passed.

Tens of thousands of infections is simply the result of exponential growth during those ten years; stopping it from becoming an epidemic would've required everyone's behavior to have changed. Different behavior, different transmission, different number of hops early on would more likely have changed how long it took to spread widely enough to become noticeable, not whether it did. (An unfortunately familiar concept, in the year 2023.)

The authors also mention that "trend data comparing subpopulations is likely to be robust for each period examined", so let's look back at those individual lines. Injection drug use (IDU) actually was a fairly significant means of transmission by the 1980s, and by the mid-80s, the spread among gay/bi men (MMSC) was beginning to decline. At the end of the decade, IDU may even have passed MMSC. Simultaneously, transmission was still rising among straight people. It shouldn't be too surprising that straight sex became significant; there are rather a lot of straight people!

The CDC also has us covered for a more current picture, as of 2017-2021 in the US:

This does vary greatly by country. Notably, as of 2022 in England, 49% of new diagnoses were among heterosexuals, compared to 45% among gay/bi men. (Do keep in mind that there are far more straight people, so still, a far higher fraction of gay/bi men were diagnosed.)

I personally find that I get the best understanding when I'm able to combine some direct evidence/data with an understanding of the history and social forces; hopefully this piece helps at least one person out in that way!

[Finally, as a footnote: trans women also exist (hi I'm one) and have historically been at high risk. I am unsure to what extent trans women are omitted versus misgendered in the above data. I wanted to focus on historical estimates over time here, and unfortunately wasn't able to find that for trans women, but this review article links to and summarizes some data from two meta-analyses.]

Thorne Harbour Health launches pop-up mpox vaccine clinic

Thorne Harbour Health will launch a free mpox pop-up clinic this week for all men who have sex with men to protect themselves against the virus.

Last week, the Victorian Department of Health confirmed three new locally acquired cases of mpox (formerly monkeypox). They’re the state’s first reported cases in several months.

Tomorrow (May 8), Thorne Harbour Health will run the pop-up vaccination clinic from 1-8pm at 200 Hoddle St, Abbotsford. No appointments are required.

All sexually active gay and bi+ men (cis and trans) and any of their sexual partners are eligible for free vaccination.

Two doses of vaccine 28 days apart provide the best protection against mpox.

Thorne Harbour wants anyone at risk who hasn’t received their second dose of vaccine to drop into the clinic.

“Our communities have a long history of proactively looking after our sexual health, and swinging into action to respond to health alerts,” Thorne Harbour CEO Simon Ruth said.

“We saw an amazing response when we ran our mpox clinic before.

“With mpox back in the community, now’s the time to do your part and get your first or second dose of the vaccine.”

While common symptoms of mpox can include lesions, rashes, and sores, Thorne Harbour Health says mpox can sometimes be confused with other STIs.

The LGBTQIA+ health organisation urged everyone to stay up to date with their regular sexual health testing.

Mpox continues to spread in countries overseas

Mpox can affect anyone, but in 2022, a global outbreak predominantly impacted men who have sex with men.

Last week, the Victorian Department of Health advised, “Mpox continues to spread in many countries.

“In Victoria, the risk of local transmission and transmission linked to international travel remains.

“Getting vaccinated reduces the risk of transmission and disease severity.”

Mpox can develop into a rash, lesions or sores, with symptoms including fever, chills, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and sore throat.

The virus spreads predominantly through prolonged physical contact. Symptoms can occur up to 21 days after exposure.

When I first started this assignment, I was fighting sleep reading about ‘The 6 Principals for a Healthy, Sustainable Built Environment’. I had read those words a million times and learnt nothing about them. I already knew that pollution is bad for you and worse if you. I already knew that water needed to be clean in order for you to drink it. I already knew that pretty rooms could help your mood. And all the other common sense that the website was yapping about. Then I got to principle 3, Harmony with nature, thousands of words into my reading. I scanned the page contemplating giving up and choosing a different project, but the word ADHD caught my attention. Ironic, I know. I’m on the waiting list for a diagnosis so, naturally, I was curious as to what the world green building council had to say about it. The bullet point read “Education: reported improvements in learning by up to 25% showing improved test results, concentration levels and reduced impacts of adhd”. I didn’t take anything in of course so I had to read it another 3 times. What was this about? What could have this much of an effect? I finally saw a glimpse of hope for this assignment and for the future of Architecture. The point was about biophilic design, a term you may have never heard but most definitely have seen before. It refers to the incorporation of plants in building designs, which is not only a beautiful design in every scenario, but it also has such a wide range of positive effects on the people in the buildings. Imagine the beauty of an entire biophilic city and how much happier we would be surrounded by what us humans are supposed to be around. This design strategy tackles pretty much every health issue we face in our current situations in buildings. Incorporating nature into indoor spaces would help with focus, and productivity, which could be used in educational spaces and be very helpful for people with adhd or any struggle to concentrate or get things done. Biophilic design can also lower stress, foster creativity, enhance wellbeing, and aid in the healing process. Research indicates that structures featuring biophilic features increase property values, boost output, and produce more healing spaces. Buildings should maximise the benefits to occupants' mental and physical health and wellbeing by ensuring that they have access to nature inside the building, adhering to the principles of biophilic design. Incorporating natural materials and patterns, sound isolation to preserve the surrounding environment, and natural lighting and space arrangement are all examples of biophilic design principles. Positive health outcomes, such as enhanced longevity, reduced body mass index, and better mental health, are linked to having access to green space. Socioeconomic factors frequently impact access to green spaces, for example; poorer areas tend to have less access to green spaces, which may exacerbate health disparities. Green infrastructure can lower air pollution, lower urban temperatures, and enhance local biodiversity. Examples of this include green walls, roofs, and vertical gardens. Water-based "blue infrastructure" has the potential to boost activity levels and increase biodiversity. Throughout the lifecycle, strategies include restoring degraded land, ponding, wetlands, endemic ecological planting, building design that incorporates green infrastructure, and taking the risk of introducing pathogens and pests into account.

One of the biggest problems I find among women's rights activists is their reliance on data when it supports them, at the same time as their absolute inability to understand (or, in some cases even read) the papers they are citing. This is then compounded by logical fallacies such as "guilt by association".

Study 1.

(Fulu, 2013) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25104345/

They studied ONLY 3rd tier economy countries, and only in Asian countries. Despite 50+ years of IPV research showing that most IPV is bi-direcitonal, and rarely happens in a vacuum (but when it does it's mostly women perpetrating alone), no mention of the woman's perpetrating role of IPV was mentioned or studied. Be that as it may, they did at least mention that poverty, alcoholism and low education were factors.

Result: Poor, illiterate Asian men are violent. Poor, illiterate Asian women might also be violent, but they never tested for that.

Study 2.

It's not actually a study, it's a report to the UN on violence against women in Arab countries. The data is scarce, inconsistent and riddled with problems. For example, on p.4 it gives an info-graphic on the Global prevalence of violence against women, and gives all sorts of statistics in the following paragraphs.

One such statistic, pulled at random is:

"In Saudi Arabia, nearly 80% of women respondents aged 18-48 reported experiencing sexual harassment, including on the street." (15)

When you check the source it gives this: https://stopstreetharassment.org/resources/statistics/statistics-academic-studies/ which gives its source as [page not found]. It's not backed up by any data at all.

Just in case this was a random glitch, I tried another reference at random, no.22. That was also a dead link.

Study 3.

It does actually have a date - 2019 - but the main worry is that the publication does NOT make ANY of the claims that OP does, because principally it didn't study for them!

Study 4.

(Jewkes et. al. 2011) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3247272/

This studied ONLY Zulu men ONLY living in rural areas run in traditional ways. However the headline makes it read that all South Africans are represented by rural Zulu nations.

Result: Zulu men rape sometimes. The most notable finding is this:

"A further difference was that men who raped had more educated mothers, with a greater proportion having completed school or attended further education."

Wouldn't that be an L for feminists??

Only a single university was studied, and the study only looked at inter-collegiate athletes. However, OP claims that 46% of all undergrad students in the entire USA admit to perpetration of sexual violence. The study does not back that statement up.

Result: 29 intercollegiate athletes at an unidentified US university may have used some kind of coercion in a previous relationship.

Study 6.

(Hales & Gannon 2021) https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/10790632211051682

My massive concern for this one is the demographic makeup. In the supplementary tables, the researchers break down the ethnicities of the perpetrators:

54% of Other Asian men were perpetrators 50% of Pakistani men 33% of Black Caribbean men 33% of Arab men 20% of Irish men 18% of Indian men ...

Starting to sound a bit racist to me...

Seriously though. This did an Aristotelian logic, by looking at two groups of people, identifying similar traits between the two, and concluding backwards that A must be like B:

Convicted rapists score high on believing rape myths, and arousal to rape scenarios - therefore - ANYONE who believes rape myths and is aroused by rape scenarios is likely to become a rapist.

In case there are people reading this that don't get the logical fallacy, let me describe it in a different way: Oranges have been found to be high in spherical shape, and usually consistent in orange color. Therefore ANYTHING that is high in spherical shape and usually consistent in orange color, must be the fruit of an orange tree.

I think you can see the problem.

I do actually have problems with the studies beyond just demographics - many of them use Koss as a sexual misconduct benchmark, and Koss was the first to state that any alcohol consumed (by a woman only!) makes any subsequent sexual act, rape. Even her participants did not view their consensual loving sexual encounters as rape, but Koss didn't listen.

Koss also went on to say that men can't be raped, period. No amount of inebriation of the man results in him being able to be taken advantage of by a woman, apparently.

None of these studies is representative of White Western men, or even men more broadly.

But it takes a frikkin essay to explain why feminists are so routinely wrong, so not many people bother, they just ignore feminists, which ironically perpetrates these rape myths, because no one corrects them.

More Than 1 in 3 Men Admit to Raping or Abusing Women

Earlier I made a post about how many men will openly admit to abusing or raping women. 

This post expands on that by looking at a few specific publications from that post and introducing some other publications on the same issue.

First, a study examined multiple sites in East and Southeast Asia, and, uniquely, aggregated the data across sites (Fulu, 2013):

33% of men admit to perpetrating physical intimate partner violence (IPV)

46% of men admit to perpetrating either physical or sexual IPV, or both

53% of men admit to perpetrating at least one emotionally abusive act; 30% admit to at least three different acts

34% of men admit to perpetrating economic IPV

24% of men admit to perpetrating rape against a partner

11% of men admit to perpetrating rape against a non-partner

4% of men admit to perpetrating gang rape

Of the men who admitted to committing any type of rape, 58% admitted to perpetrating rape more than once and 33% admitted to more than one victim

67% of the men who committed rape faced no legal consequences 

14-52% of men said had transactional sex at least once

Second, a study examined multiple countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The data was not aggregated across country, so the range of responses is provided (UN Women, 2017):

10-45% of men admit to perpetrating physical IPV

20-80% of men admit to perpetrating emotional IPV

31-64% of men admit to perpetrating street-based sexual harassment; in addition, more educated men were more likely to admit to having sexually harassed a woman, and more educated women were more likely to have experienced sexual harassment

Third, a study examined multiple countries from around the world (Brazil, Chile, Croatia, India, Mexico and Rwanda). The data was not aggregated across country, so the range of responses is provided (Barker et al., n.d.):

25-40% of men admit to perpetrating physical IPV

6-29% of men admit to perpetrating sexual violence against women and girls

16-56% of men said they had transactional sex at least once

Fourth, smaller studies provide data from a range of different countries:

28% of men in South Africa admit to having ever raped a woman; many perpetrated rape more than once; 2% admitted to perpetrating gang rape; more than 30% faced no consequences and over 80% faced no legal consequences (Jewkes et al., 2011)

46% of male undergraduate students in the USA admit to perpetrating  some form of sexual coercion (Young et al., 2017)

Finally, some studies with related data:

13% of men in the UK admit to perpetrating sexual violence over the past twelve months; importantly, this figure is not comparable to the lifetime prevalence estimates given above (Hales & Gannon, 2021)

35% of male undergraduate students in the USA reported some likelihood of committing rape, in a review of earlier studies (Malamuth, 1981)

The wording of these studies is crucial, as some men will endorse behaviorally descriptive items, but reject labeling items - where the word rape is used (Edwards et al., 2014); these differences may explain at least part of the reported victimization-perpetration gap (Kolivas & Gross, 2007)

In addition, these studies all used self-report measures (asking men if they committed particular violent acts). Therefore, the reported prevalence is likely based on (1) the true prevalence rate and (2) the social acceptability of that form of violence. Some estimates may therefore be much lower than the true prevalence rates.
