"Currently, It appears that the two of you are not getting along within the drama."

Takezai: Hajime is reluctant to reach out, while Kotaro is. Kotaro wants to protect Amane-chan and Haruka-san, but can't even protect himself, and Hajime is the one to always protect us, which frustrates Kotaro……So now, he's taking it out on Hajime?

Morimoto: When he sees Kotaro like that, I feel that Hajime finds it very interesting.

Takezai: There's a part of Hajime that Kotaro admires, but he won't allow himself to feel that way. It's a complicated feeling.

Morimoto: Hajime is uncertain too. Being around Amane-chan makes his heart feel at ease and warm inside, but he still doesn't understand what it means "to be loved," and he doesn't even understand why he wants to protect her. As his human side develops, so too will the number of his problems, and I think Hajime is going to have a much harder time from now on.

"So, apart from your roles, what do you like about each other?"

Morimoto: He has good intuition, can immediately grasp the situation, and he's also very tolerant and considerate.

Takezai: I don't have anything to say about his performance, other than that I've learned quite alot from him. Usually, you act pretty silly, don't you? And when everyone's together, the tension really rises. But, when it comes to acting, he changes completely. I think, "Is this really the same guy?" The range of emotions, and the way in which he switches between them is amazing. I'm usually very reserved.

"Kotaro's becoming more and more quiet…or rather, it's more like he's becoming serious."

Takezai: There's alot of emotional ups and downs. Every time we get a new script, it's something new. I'm like, "Ah, so this time it's this emotion." I used to play Kotaro, but the range has become so narrow, that now, I'm pretty much playing the role of Terunosuke Takezai.

"Would you ever consider switching roles?"

Morimoto: I don't get to smile much, do I? Kotaro is a really cute guy, and he has a charming smile, I'd like to be able to laugh too.

Takezai: I'd like to try being Chalice. I rarely get to show my emotions. If you think about it, we're the complete opposite in terms of personality.

Morimoto: Yeah. I think Hajime is jealous of Kotaro because they're complete opposites. Hajime wants to smile, but his smile continues to be rather awkward. I want to hurry up and become human…..

Takezai: Then you'd be a monstrous human (laughs).

"What's the most interesting part about Chalice?"

Morimoto: Because I don't have many lines, the lack of dialogue makes it much more difficult to communicate through my eyes and facial expressions. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing how I'll show the process of becoming human.

"Come to think of it, have you been working out recently?"

Morimoto: When I watched 555's movie, there's a shirtless transformation scene, so I was worried that something like that would be in our movie, so I just thought......I don't want to look like a matchstick if I have to take my clothes off (laughs). I do think Hajime is strong, even in his human body.

"What about Takezai's role in the film?"

Takezai: The movie takes place 4 years after the TV show, and I've become a stuck up guy after selling my books and becoming rich……

Morimoto: Kotaro seems to be much more active in the movie.

"Do you ever have time to go out drinking together or just hang out?"

Takezai: Now that you mention it, we've never gone out drinking together once, have we?!

Morimoto: We all go out to eat together, don't we?

"Do you share any common interests, like soccer or motorcycles?"

Morimoto: We do. We both like comedy.

Takezai: I like to laugh. Although, I'm better at being laughed at than at making people laugh.

Morimoto: I'm more of Tsubaki-kuns type.

Takezai: I think you're right

Morimoto: It's better if no one notices me doing it. So I try to do it secretly.

Takezai: There are times where the audio crew picks up on it, and then they'll suddenly start laughing. It makes me happy when they laugh.

Morimoto: I can't help but sometimes joke in front of everyone! Sometimes I do it too much and get pulled aside.

Takezai: Lately, no one comments on your jokes, so you've been forcing them.

Morimoto: I'm like, "…wha, hey!" (laughs).

Takezai: That's…it's alittle bit funny.

"You share a similar hobby, but do you have any differences?"

Takezai: Yeah, I love soccer, but I'm more of an indoor type of person. I recently had 3 weeks off, but during that time, I stayed inside for a whole week. It was tiring, but I do like to just space out at home.

Morimoto: I'm about ready to get out of here! (*he can't imagine being indoors for that long)

"Well then, finally, for you two complete opposites, please give a yell of support to each other."

Takezai: Yell? Support? Don't want to.

Morimoto: No (firmly).

Takezai: With Ryoji around, I can focus on acting with a sense of ease. I trust him.

Morimoto: I'm at ease too. I feel he gives off alot of confidence.

Takezai: The truth is that I have alot of work to do. And yet, everyone says it doesn't look that way…..

Morimoto: I can see you're nervous. Your tongue tends to do this, right? (he licks his lips)

Takezai: Yeah (laughs).

"Well, we're looking forward to it!"

Takezai: Please look forward to watching Chalice this August!

Morimoto: That's right! From now on, the relationships will continue to be very interesting!

If I had a nickel for every time i watched a horny tv show with an explicit name, full of sex scenes, yet it presents sex as more objective, a study subject. And then it also turned out to have the best written characters you'll ever see on tv. The best character growth for the pathetic little wet cardboard of a male protagonist (which continues to be pathetic until the end but now with more depth). And also makes me fall in love with an objectively shitty man... I'd have two nickels, which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice lol

The Pornographer series has joined my list of best written characters right up there with Masters of Sex. I cannot express how much I love this show. I'm obsessed, I will not shut up about it.

This Japanese bl drama is very erotic.

If a writer of erotic stories hurts his dominant hand, who will be able to write for him? And here Kuzumi, a simple university student, finds himself confronted with the world of erotica and with his own sexual attraction towards the one he listens to every day.

The use of lights and the choice of environments brings me to a sense of nostalgia and timeless place. I really appreciate this choice that allowed me to perceive the feelings of the two in a more direct way.

If there are scenes they are truly erotic.

It is worth it.

The ending is suspended, everything can either end there, or reopen for a continuation.

We've watched The Novelist, Mood Indigo, and Spring Life. Let's watch these two try to survive long distance.

I'm going wild over the cinematography of Rio's pacing during this fight. Incredible acting from both of them in this long take. Rio can be such a jerk.

Did Rio never recognize the crazy in Haruhiko's eyes? It was the first thing I noticed about him.

Japanese characters are so good at staying still and pretending to sleep when someone looms over them.

I just love Japanese filmmaking. I love trusting actors to act and I love the composition of these shots.

"It's not about being tough. You become tough when someone is important to you." Come through, Haruko!!!

I'm fond of Shizuo.

I'm glad Kuzumi didn't answer his phone and Kijima has to take the leap of going to Tokyo without reassurance.

Kido, you have a daughter. Why ask that question?

Finally a forthright, vulnerable apology and confession from Rio.

I love that these two always kiss like maniacs.

I just love trains.

Families are difficult, but Rio is still loved.

Oh, Rio. I felt that wall breaking. Goddamn Takezai Terunosuke is good.

"Is there really such a life without loneliness?" is a great rebuttal to Rio's cynical view.

I'm so glad things ended well for Haruko and Shizuo as well.

Final Verdict: 10, If You Are Male and Queer Please Watch This Franchise Immediately. I'm giving this movie a 10 for the way the entire franchise has been the most satisfying experience I've had in BL in a really long time. I keep begging for realistic approaches to male-male intimacy and relationships, and this franchise hits it constantly. Rio is layers of bullshit hiding an incredible loneliness and sense of worthlessness, and it was so satisfying to see him claw his way out of that because he found someone else who finally connected to him. It's been a really long time since I felt this good about going back to something I skipped over for one reason over another, and I can say confidently that I fully trust @lurkingshan recommendations. If you are gay and feeling a bit displaced in BL, please watch this, and then ping her, me, @harurio @ginnymoonbeam or @waitmyturtles. I promise it will be worth your time.

When I saw similar dynamics to the first season of the drama, I laughed so much.

And he breaks his arm, this time the right one.

And he has to write a book, this time for real.

And there is a young boy who can write for him, who still shows interest even if he is too innocent to understand what could happen.

Luckily Kuzumi arrives.

And here the story finally tells the truth.

The heaviness and inadequacy towards such strong feelings struck me a lot. I also appreciated this film. And then the chemistry between the two...

I know there is a spin off on the story before Kuzumi, I don't know if I want to see it, probably I would miss Kuzumi too much...

The Novelist (2018) Ep 6 (Finale) Stray Thoughts

Last time, Kijima committed to the asshole bit when Haruhiko confronted him about lying, and they had an intense but uncomfortable sexual encounter. Kijima played himself and panicked after Haruhiko left upset. Later, Haruhiko spoke with Kido about Kijima and then bullied the key out of him. Now he’s running.

Last Episode: The End of Desire and Reason

Love when a show is legible. I suspected immediately that all of this started because Kijima was bored. Knowing that he was battling writer’s block explains why he was so touched by Kuzumi saying he liked his writing.

Oh, whoa, this just went to an especially dark and troubling place.

This man typed that entire letter with T9? Nothing displays the age gap more than that.

I really love the way Japanese cinema appreciates space and the audience’s ability to remember space. Holding the shot looking at the porch as Kuzumi runs back and forth in and out of the frame frantically before collapsing in the middle of the frame is just so excellent. Any other dramatic tradition would have used more than a dozen cuts for this.

I’m glad Kijima hadn’t left yet, because he gets to continue to be mild in response to Kuzumi’s frantic energy.

He really asked for a new novel with total earnestness.

Oh, Kijima is crying now. Takezai Terunosuke is really fantastic.

Kijima’s writer’s block is sometimes hard for me to watch. I was an editor for two years and worked with a lot of writers. Keeping them motivated and breaking them through their own blocks was not always easy, and it could be ugly.

“Can you tell me more about yourself? I want to know you better.” may be one of the most romantic things I’ve seen from Japan in a long time, and that just raised the entire show a full point for me.

Hey, that was actually a really great kiss, no caveats about Japan.

How fascinating. For all the raunchy porn-grade sex we’ve seen in show, we only see the aftermath of their first mutual encounter where they apparently did it six times?? Goddamn. I like the choice to focus on their tenderness.

Oh, I just knew Kijima was going to leave before he woke up. I get it. He has to face himself in his writing alone.

Final Verdict: 9, Highly Recommended. I am glad @lurkingshan and @waitmyturtles poked me to finally watch this show. What started out as a twisted exploration of sexual desire peels back to reveal a deeply-lonely man and the low-key unhinged guy who becomes obsessed with him. Their dynamic was a little twisted, and I am absolutely fascinated that there are four more installments for this. As expected, this show couldn’t show us the mutual encounter between these two because it would have been too much for TV. Instead, this show was able to hit us with all sorts of raunchy or improper depictions of sex on screen. That in itself is a not-so-subtle commentary about what can and can’t be shown. This was an absolutely fascinating show that often made me uncomfortable, but compelled me to return to it.
