I love using lights to paint light into shadowy areas of a scene. Whether it’s a vineyard scene at night to capture starlight filling in details of canopy leaves with a million candle power beam or like this shot painting with a small flashlight to get the detail of the grassy foreground, no sensor or film can capture what the human eye can so having a ‘helper’ for the shadows can be the difference between getting the shot.....or going home with half an image. The hills in the distance are a Pinot Noir vineyard along the Sonoma Coastline I love to return to from time to time. With a New Year comes a fresh haircut for these Old Zin’s! For whatever reason, pruning is happening a little early this year and it makes for one of my favorite photo op periods in the vineyards. These vines aren’t extremely old but they definitely qualify being planted roughly 1962. A large print of this show the little purple-violet ground flowers in the right-hand bottom corner and makes for a fun little touch 🌸🌺🌸🌺. Clouds have a way of capturing the imagination of both the young and old. It’s not ‘mystical’ but a purposeful beauty that has originated in a way that no man can explain (other than the observance of what is ‘is happening’ in their formation and the colors they display). On this Christmas Day, the central figure if this celebration is the one who is said to have the knowledge of the origins of the universe and the billions of galaxies contained therein. There is a book I have told my son is a requirement to read and study to graduate from high school. It is a book that 99% of Ph.D.’s have never read nor will until education becomes academic rather than political. The book is called ‘Starlight & Time’ and provides a glimpse of the possible mathematical explanation of an instantaneous expansion of the universe. A fascinating read opening the doors to a new beginning for science....but until then, I choose to enjoy the beauty of this part of the universe, it’s my own back yard. When I’m tasting, blending or evaluating wines for others, my favorite thing to do is to find music from Direct live experiences that I’ve enjoyed and play those sounds. I think it grounds me with the richness of living life “live”.....So, here’s a clip for the moment....tasting the @standardwines Sonoma Red wine at the moment. Ripe blackberries, hint if anise, plum & sweet berry lift. Leather & earthy tones matured in the glass as several minutes went by sipping and swirling.
