Hello friends, I am back with more reading recommendations for your agonies! Next up we have the long awaited and much requested Sad Boat Fiction list. As with all of my lists, this is NOT exhaustive and there WILL be great books left off, and also you may or may not like these books! I only rec things that I've personally enjoyed or that come highly recommended by trusted friends, but taste in books is incredibly subjective, especially with fiction. If I missed your favorite, please add it in the comments or drop it in my DMs!
Now that I'm feeling more settled in my new job, I will hopefully have a lot more time to make book lists and do more virtual Readers' Advisory. I have lists in the works for women in polar exploration and companion reads for the HBO War series, but if there's something else you would love to see, please send me a message!

🇧🇷 o texto em pt br estará lá em baixo
Rereading some passages from acotar, I just found out that there are half-fae in Velaris. Rhsyand found some after he took over and brought them in, providing shelter (my headcanon is that they are probably the less fortunate people, from those buildings on Nesta's block. No way they are high fae, and now that I know there are people there with human blood, it's so... "wow, it all makes sense"). He also says that he couldn't just give shelter to everyone because Velaris is hidden, he couldn't announce it, and people wouldn't go to the night court just because the high lord called them, would they? The night has always been despicable.
I also found out that YES, THERE ARE HUMANS WITH MAGIC IN THE WORLD OF PRYTHIAN. RARE, BUT THERE ARE! THOSE WITH DISTANT FAIRY BLOOD!! The rare worldbuilding we have in Acotar... And it's all wasted because it's just stuff that's mentioned... Where were these humans with the power to resist in the war (the recent one)?
Information taken directly from chapter 20 of ACOWAR.
We also have libraries rich in knowledge being burned with all the books because they didn't want the humans (slaves) to evacuate, but I don't know where these libraries were. I imagine Rhysand is talking about the territories closest to human lands, maybe even those kingdoms on the continent... It's such shallow information that it leaves more room for questioning than anything else 🤡. I went looking for information and found more scoop. Splendid, Sarah Gmails.
I put several random tags so that more people can see it.

Wildflower Plateau, the Most Important Spot
Sorry it took a long time to return, although I'm still only slowly going to do so now that I have Rebirth for PC (and can play on ultra settings). I never had my own PS5, so I had to improvise last year to get though it...which was a rushed affair...but now I can do whatever I want.
I played till I got to the Wildflower Plateau and took some pictures. Don't think I mentioned this detail...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The devs purposely designed this area to show you the huge pipe coming from Midgar. The Sector 7 reactor (the only visible numbered one) is on the left of that pipe, meaning that it comes from the Sector 6 reactor, the one Zack fell down into in one of the timelines where Biggs dies.
The Sector 6 pipeline is the one that's featured in the first Kyrie quest ("Lifeline in Peril"). If Zack travels through this pipeline, he will be able to exit it through the leak shown in the quest since it won't be fixed in that timeline. I can't be perfectly sure that's the Sector 6 pipe or if their plans will change a little bit, but it's not the southern pipe at least.
I don't know the exact way Zack gets to the Wildflower plateau though. The "major hint" is the scene in World of Final Fantasy's DLC where Zack is dropped on a bed of flowers by Bahamut on what looks like...a wildflower plateau, and with Serah there to greet him with the whole "...'ngel?" bit. I mentioned it multiple times now...Cloud is mentined as being "Snow's friend" and the conversation derails to it being about him, and then I noticed this scene was connected to FF15's "Terra Wars" DLC by how Noctis does something similar when he wakes up to a "Sarah".
The Junon Tifa quest "Dreaming of Blue Skies" hints at the condor while also combining it with the Remake "Hollow language" (Hollow only plays around the pipes and Wildflower Plateau). Actually, there's no real reason why anything about this quest is about "blue skies" in the first place other than Tifa mentioning it at the end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original hint in WoFF involved Bahamut. The monster that takes the cow in this quest seems to be a hint at Bahamut and connects it with the reactor (some of the Sector 6 reactor pipe runs underwater). Also, why is a "Mystic Dragon" rotting? Maybe "caves" can refer to the pipes?
Tumblr media
The condor appears in the Intergrade DLC right as well. Note that the Condor is around Midgar and is flying towards "the blue sky". There are even pipes shown in the right shot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bottom two pics are the condor in FF7 Rebirth for comparison. So we know the condor goes around Midgar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The area around the plateau is very large as if something big will happen at this spot at some point, but all we get is a side quest that forces us to get here ("Flowers from the Hill"). This obviously means something will happen here in the next game, and it's connected to Aerith's "flower picking for the orphanage" event from Remake. The spot is expansive, possibly to get the condor through here and drop Zack.
By the way, most people don't know this but Yuffie stands by the Foxtail grass (Tifa - White, Red XIII - Red, Barret - Blue). Don't know about Cait Sith. Everyone takes the quest early, so it was hard to find out what Yuffie does. In Remake, Foxtail was about "surprise", the white ones were loyalty, and the yellows were "reunion".
Tumblr media
Loveless explains that the "goddess" will "descend" around what is probably the time when the Weapons come from the earth and wreck havoc. If Sephiroth is doing the FF9 thing where two planets become one in other timelines where mako has run out, then the "planet" will likely be descending over Midgar to replace how Meteor does it in the OG timeline. If that's the case, it's possible that Terra will descend somewhere around Midgar, but I'll see if there's a hint to that detail.
The condor quests also hint at something happening "next time". Yuffie's date does this a lot, so I'm going by that for reference.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's all for now. See you later.
I do have to say though..."Hollow" is Terra's actual theme from FF6 mixed with "Awakening" and redesigned for FF7 Remake so it sounds difficult to notice unless you compare the songs.

books i read in 2024!
so i got back into reading in 2023 after almost a decade of not doing it (thanks uni for killing the passion lol) and so last year i decided to make a list of all the books i read! here they all are in order followed with my thoughts (*=reread)
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen Rebecca - Daphne du Maurier The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks Fight Club* - Chuck Palahniuk Lullaby - Chuck Palahniuk The Harpy - Megan Hunter A Voyage for Madmen - Peter Nichols Moby Dick - Herman Malville The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Flatland - Edwin A Abbott The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K Le Guin Frozen in Time - Owen Beattie & John Geiger Superheavy - Kit Chapman This Is How You Lose The Time War - Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone Affinity* - Sarah Waters A Room With a View - E.M Forster The House at Riverton - Kate Morton The Perfect Storm - Sebastian Junger Tell Me I'm Worthless - Alison Rumfitt Crow Moon - Suzy Aspley South: The Endurance Expedition - Ernest Shackleton The Hunger - Alma Katsu
as you can see i read some Absolute Bangers this year. there were only two books that werent for me and that was 'tell me im worthless' and 'this is how you lose the time war'. while it sounded interesting and there were some parts i really liked, the writing style of the former just really wasn't for me and the amount of sexual violence was not something i was expecting so that threw me off as well (there was a tw at the beginning so obvi no fault to the author there! i just personally wasnt expecting it to be the main plot of the book). the main qualm i had with it though is that there were no likeable characters, which is just not something for me as i like someone to root for when reading. i like a bit of escapism when reading but i dont mind heavy subject matter but oof the whole thing was a proper downer lol, just not for me personally!
for the latter it was So Hyped Up for ages so i decided to read it but all the way through the book i couldn't help but think that the two characters had fallen in love without ever meeting each other and in fact had only glanced at each other once across a battlefield. i know its probably not the point but i just couldnt help thinking about that and it just made the whole romance seem a bit silly to me? idk maybe that just the aro in me lol
2024 also marked the first time in my life id ever read non-fiction and besties i am absolutely HOOKED. read some really interesting true stories and have some more lined up for next year. i always thought it wasnt something i was interested in but i couldnt be more wrong, and being real life stories i think the perils and heartbreak hit me harder than fiction bc i Know that this really happened to someone.
anyway, choosing book of the year was Difficult but in the end i knew i could really only come to one conclusion. honourable mentions to 'pride and prejudice' and 'rebecca' - both completely changed me as a person, with the ending to 'rebecca' coming like a punch to the gut which i Still think about to this day.
however - i must give book of the year 2024 to 'a voyage for madmen' by peter nichols. as well as it being the first non-fiction book i had ever read, this book got me into boats and maritime expeditions and its now my number one interest! im not an emotional girlie but i cried my gd eyes out toward the end at the fate of one of the men, just absolutely harrowing to find out one of the men you followed through the entire book and rooted for through thick and thin ended his life not long after, hurts even more bc he was a real life person with real thoughts and feelings and desires and all that. got to thank this book to being my gateway to start reading about other boat journeys and now im Obsessed with doomed polar expeditions, particularly the franklin expedition of 1885, thanks peter nichols! 10/10 recommend!
there will definitely be more boat books in 2025 - i got apsley cherry-garrards biography of the terra nova expedition for christmas and am hoping to read that next! im also really interested in reading about the crew of the belgica in 'madhouse at the end of the earth'. im hoping to read 'house of leaves' this year as ive wanted to read it ever since i heard about it way back in the late 2000s but it was out of print, then a few years ago my sis+sil got me it for christmas! hope i find some absolute bangers this year!

Read Along: Ancient Greece A Political, Social and Cultural History by Sarah Pomeroy, Stanley Burstein, Walter Donlan, Jennifer Tolbert Roberts. Long post, reminder that you can blacklist "songbird chirps" and/or "read along ancient greece book" to avoid these posts.
(Pg 2) "Though religion inspired much of architecture, literature, and even athletic competitions, which were held to honor the gods, Greek government and society often seemed to function in an entirely secular manner. Marriage, for example, was a purely civil affair, and divorce was not believed to distress the gods at all. The gods were nowhere and everywhere. Ideals of equality were preached by men who usually owned slaves and believed in the inferiority of women."
Thoughts: The quote "the gods were nowhere and everywhere" hits hard but no real use for it -Interesting that they list a lot of everyday aspects of life then say things are mostly secular. But makes sense in a way--humanity has remained roughly the same and some people make religion a part of every single thing and other people are the 'church on major holidays' sorts of people. Would like to see their source for this, though, as whether the original authors were religious or not seems to greatly affect their opinion. -The slave thing...yes. Noted a lot especially in literature about Athens life, Spartan life, agricultural, and mining operations. Just like now, philosophers tended to be wealthy men who ignored the people doing the actual labor. For some reason these authors then go on to quote those same slave-owning bastards with their hot takes on Greek labor with no caveats so that's fun.
(Pg 4-5) "Materials decay, and the soil of Greece is not good for preserving things. Accordingly, artifacts made of wood, cloth, and leather are rarely found. Metals fare better: gold and silver last almost forever; bronze is fairly durable, iron more subject to corrosion. Another material, virtually indestructible, is terra-cotta."
Thoughts: Survivorship bias is something to always be mindful of. Especially looking at what is surviving--it is all materials by and for rich people, who will not give us an accurate portrayal of day to day life of the Greeks, and will leave us holes in terms of every day worship practices. However, terra-cotta was extremely cheap and plentiful so possibly also explains the amount of surviving votive offerings with it.
(Pg 6) "The most common medium for writing in the ancient Mediterranean was papyrus"
Thoughts: rip people's grocery lists and burn books. But in seriousness, again, survivorship bias! We see such a small amount of how the majority lived and worshiped.
(Pg 9) "When all is said and done, what stands out about the Greeks is the great paradox: a single people, yet totally disunited and regularly at war with itself."
Thoughts: Why it's important to note geographical locations when speaking about rituals when possible. What happens in one polis may not happen in another. This is American-centric but it's very similar to how the states are set up. People from Alaska don't have much in common in day to day life with people from Iowa, but they're both American and statistically are going to hold similar religious beliefs. There is never going to be just one way to do things. Also explains the different holiday calendar due to differing climates and needs.
(Pg 15) "Water, the most precious natural resource, is scarce in Greece because there are very few rivers that flow year round, and few lakes, ponds, and springs"
Thoughts: Find that agricultural book again and look for references for wells. It could also explain the importance of libations above all offerings--they're giving a finite resource. Could also explain why even the gods give libations. One drought and I can promise everyone is religious as all get out. Also, remember the messages left at Zeus' temple and how snippy people got about the rain. It is likely connected, reference maps between those temples and location of rivers to ensure mental connection is correct.

I’m still going through my first playthrough of FFXV. I’m only on Chapter 5 and I swear, these two have more chemistry than Noct and Luna from what I’ve seen so far. This side quest/collab with Terra Wars was fun though. c’: The cuties.

In the Zack flashback there seems to be a subtle clue about the rift in the sky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elmyra says the "world is ending". When Elmyra says the world is ending, there is a dying yellow flower and the petals fly off towards the rift.
Biggs in the Sector 6 reactor says the lifestream is "bone dry" (in a 3rd timeline though).
If there is a world that has a dead lifestream, then it could be that Sephiroth is summoning another planet as this one has nothing left. He's said it over and over again and it makes sense he'd do it in this circumstance.
Since the petals fly towards it, then it may be that the "worlds converging" thing is actually two planets.
In Opera Omnia, worlds are literally "merged". Things in both worlds appear in one place. FF9 has that symbolism and the ending of Remake as well. It would be kinda dumb if Sephiroth's whole plan is just make timelines into one as it's always been about "going to another planet to drain it".
I like the name of the complex Jessie names in her Remake chapter, the "7-6 Annex". This timeline is a bit odd since the effects of meteor already appeared in Midgar, but meteor doesn't seem like it's a thing here...it's just "the rift". As far as I know, a rift wasn't used to summon meteor, but it's also said in OG that that meteor is a small planet.
If the lifestream is actually "bone dry" then maybe Sephiroth wants to merge this planet with another so that when he summons meteor here he'll actually have energy to draw off of. Perhaps that's where the "making multiple timelines into one" part make sense.
Btw, Biggs in this timeline came from Cloud's timeline. That's not hard to find out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this may be how Terra ends up in this world, but we have years to find it out...although Kingdom Hearts 4 may have some info.
It's worth showing the main hint about Zack and Terra. Compare the two scenes below replacing Serah/Sarah with Terra and Noctis with Zack. In the Terra Wars FF15 DLC notice the similarity between the final boss of it and Sephiroth/Jenova.
youtube
youtube
The WoFF scene with Zack doesn't make sense without the FF15 DLC (the similarity is how both Noctis and Zack wake up, which is implying that Noctis "is" Zack in this regard). Sarah "being" Terra is shown by the aliens (they're basically "moogles" since "hiso/kupo") and her line about dealing with "little kids". Also, the thing is literally called "Terra Wars", but maybe the obvious is too obvious to make sense (RIP random mobile game). Opera Omnia also connects Zack with Noctis. The "Eroder" sounds like something Jenova is named after.
Thing is, since this hint exists and nothing has "disproved" it, I'll have to believe it.
