A Bengaluru arts foundation is using a Google platform to display its two decades of work online.

The Sandeep and Gitanjali Maini Foundation has put up a few select works from its latest show, ‘The Masters and the Modern,’ on a platform called Google Arts and Culture. The exhibition is on physical display at Gallery G till March 10.

The foundation first mooted the idea of going with Google Arts and Culture (GAC) to the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2012.

 Later, founder-trustee Gitanjali Maini recommended it to Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation, based in Bengaluru. “During this five-year-long association with the GAC team, we have had conversations about documenting our foundation’s works. We started working on the project in May 2020 and have been live online since February 26 this year,” she says.  Moving art to different places has always been a challenge, especially when they are “national treasures and registered antiquities”

The showstopper for the current exhibition is a painting by Bollywood actor Salman Khan, titled ‘Immortal: Selfless in A Selfish World’.  “He doesn’t want to be in the commercial space. Indian Woman Arrested for Using ‘Sorcery’ to Cure Covid-19

Hajira Beevi, 47, lives in Cheranalloor, a suburb of Kochi city in the state of Kerala, India, on the banks of the Periyar River. She was arrested by the local police on Thursday after being caught performing “sorcery” in an attempt to cure Covid-19, otherwise known as coronavirus.

A report in The Hindu says the native of Cheranalloor was arrested from her residence following a complaint. A police official said, “Hajira has a history of involving in sorcery activities” and that she claims to “cure diseases by chanting incantations and sprinkling holy water.” The complaint was lodged against the alleged sorceress after a video of her practicing “sorcery” - claiming her occult practices can “cure Covid-19.”

The Significance of Spirituality in India

The famous 1300-years-old temple of Lord Shiva at East Cheranalloor is one of the 108 Shiva temples and 108 Durga temples created for the well-being and prosperity of the people in Kerala. According to folklore, the sage “ Parashurama” installed the idol of Shiva in the Treta Yuga and because the Lord is manifested in his ascetic form at this shrine “rituals” with fragrant flowers and incense sticks is forbidden.

Amidst this deeply spiritual environment, the accused will appear in court on Friday. According to a report on Desi Babu , the accused was known to be engaged in similar practices to “cure ailments” and with the onset of Covid-19 Miss Hajira started handing out medicines “like some powders and solutions,” said the police.

Sorcery and Spirituality

Miss Hajira Beevi has been charged under IPC Section 420 for “Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property and 269 (Whoever unlawfully or negligently does any act which is, and which he knows or has reason to believe to be, likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life” for having offered a “cure to diseases by chanting incantations and sprinkling holy water.”

On this first charge, her defense lawyer might refer to an event last year which aimed to address the waves of violence, corruption and crime in the Colombian city, Buenaventura, by launching “holy water from a helicopter.“

According to a report in  UPI, Monsignor Rubén Dario Jaramillo Montoya, bishop of Buenaventura, told a local radio station “we want to exorcise all those demons that are destroying our port.” So, Miss Beevi has is no way offended any of the 19.9 million Catholics in India, representing around 1.55% of the population.

And it is very unlikely Miss Beevi offended local followers of Shivaism, which is a nature religion in which followers perform rituals in alignment and coordination with “subtle beings and supernatural forces,” and teach that “Shiva rules magic and the occult.” It was only on July 19 Times of India instructed the Indian public on how to use six mantras to invoke Shiva, who they promise will help “protect us from diseases.”

A Case of Misunderstanding?

If Miss Beevi is imprisoned, than that also brings into question all the leaders and followers of the India Institute of Occult Science , who teach the public: “ Numerology, Palmistry, Rune Reading, Reiki, Tarot, Coffee Cup Reading, Graphology, Angel Card Reading and Lama-Fera “an energy healing system” practiced over the centuries in the Buddhist monasteries of the Himalayas.”

Since it appears that many members of Indian society practice some form of “rituals” to protect them from diseases, what has Miss Beevi done wrong? The answer to this question becomes clearer when we consider the person who videoed and reported her was a 14 year old boy, who was rightfully terrified being exposed to an adult ritual which he didn’t understand, or have explained to him.

On the second charge, for having broken IPC Section 420, “any act which is, and which he knows or has reason to believe to be, likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life,” it’s worth remembering that Miss Beevi was caught selling “cures for coronavirus,” which is the very opposite of acting to spread the disease.

Christian students will earn an additional benefit of around ₹3 crore when the minority scholarships are redistributed among them and the Muslims based on their population.

The redistribution following the Kerala High Court order would see the total allocation for Muslims going down to ₹9.27 crore from the earlier ₹12.68 crore and that of all the Christian communities together going up to ₹6.41 crore from the earlier ₹3.16 crore, said A.B. Moideen Kutty, Director, Directorate of Minority Welfare

The disbursal of the minority merit-cum-means scholarship scheme, which was rechristened C.H. Muhammad Koya Scholarship, and the one for professional courses like Chartered Accountancy and ICWA, would have to be restructured with the court striking down the 80:20 ratio followed for the beneficiaries — Muslims, Latin Catholics, and Converted Christians. The court also ordered that it shall be redistributed among all the minority communities on the basis of their population.

Each year, the State government spends ₹15.81 crore on six scholarships covering 14,398 students belonging to the six minority communities, Mr. Kutty said.

Highest allocation

The CH scholarships has the highest annual budgetary allocation of ₹8 crore and maximum number of beneficiaries, 7,000 girl students. It supports girls from Muslim, Latin Catholic, and Converted Christian communities in graduate, postgraduate and professional courses by offering an annual aid of ₹5,000, ₹6,000 and ₹7,000 each and ₹13,000 each for hosteliers. The scholarship amount, launched with an annual outlay of ₹10 crore in 2008, was slashed to ₹8 crore since there were few applicants initially, he said.

The scholarship for Chartered Accountancy has an outlay of ₹45 lakh and a beneficiary base of 300 students. The ₹3.30-crore Prof. Joseph Mundassery Scholarship for 2,835 students who score full A Plus in SSLC and Plus Two courses, and distinction for UG and PG courses, the ₹60-lakh APJ Abdul Kalam Scholarship for 990 students of technical courses, and the ₹50-lakh Mother Teresa scholarship for 333 students of paramedical and nursing courses are the other schemes, the official said.

The court order would see the scholarship share of Muslims shrinking to 58.67% from the earlier 80%. All Christian communities together would get nearly 40.6%, against the earlier 20%. The other minority communities including Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis and Jains, will be eligible for 0.73% of the benefits.

While most Muslim community organisations wanted the State government to appeal against the court order, most Christian organisations hailed it. The government is treading a fine line in the socially sensitive issue and has maintained that appropriate decision would be taken after looking into the verdict.

Functioning of the J.B. Koshy Commission to study the issues faced by Christians in the State should be put on hold considering the recent Kerala High Court verdict in the minority scholarship case, the Muslim Employees Cultural Association (MECA) has said.

The Kerala High Court had directed that the minority communities should be considered as a single unit and scholarships distributed.

The State government should come out with new guidelines for the distribution of scholarships and implementation of the welfare schemes taking into account the communal amity and social balances, said a statement issued by N.K. Ali, general secretary of the organisation.

A meeting of leaders of various Muslim organisations will be held shortly to come up with suggestions and proposals in the wake of the court order, the statement said.

Decoding history: Of Old Goa and viceroys

Under the Old Goa  Revelation Project,  Portuguese-based  professor and historian, Fernando Antonio Baptista

Pereira and conservator and restorer, Teresa Teves Reis, and team have unravelled new information  about the viceroys’ portrait  collection at Old Goa.  They share their findings  with NT BUZZ

With its majestic edifices dating back to centuries, Old Goa is a haven for history lovers. And the Archaeological Museum of India, located in the Convent of St Francis of Assisi further narrates the rich history of this tiny state. Among its many displays is the Viceroy’s Portrait Gallery, documenting the lineage of Portuguese viceroys and governors from the 15th century to the 20th century.

“This is a very important collection because there is no other gallery in the world which covers five centuries ie from the 16th century right up to 1961,” says professor and historian, Fernando Antonio Baptista Pereira from Portugal. “Also, most of these are oil paintings on wood which is absolutely unique. While you do find Christian art in Goa, Daman and Diu in this style, this is a unique set of oil paintings on wood with portraits,” he says. This, he continues, is important because in Europe, after the 16th century, all the paintings were done on canvas rather than wood. But because of the humid condition in Goa, wood was preferred.

A historian (PhD) in art sciences and techniques specialised in museology and an associate professor in the Faculdade de Belas-Artes (Universidade de Lisboa) where he teaches art history, museology and museography and research methodologies, Pereira has coordinated several national and international museological and museographic projects, art catalogues and curated several exhibitions.

Since 2017, Pereira and conservator and restorer Teresa Teves Reis, (currently a PhD student in Fine-Arts, in the Faculdade de Belas-Artes, from Universidade de Lisboa, supported by the doctoral scholarship HERITAS- Heritage Studies), have been working closely on examining this art collection and the secrets that lie therein.

“It all began with a good friend of ours, historian Miguel Mira Mateus, who earlier worked on restoring the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount in Old Goa and another chapel in Kochi, both of which were sponsored by Fundacao Oriente. He was also the first person to try and develop a project for the conservation of this collection. After he passed away we kept at his mission since 2002,” says Reis.

In 2017, they officially developed this into the Old Goa Revelations Project and received approval from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to be able to come and study it.

“We won a grant from the Portuguese foundation, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. The foundation considered this project to be innovative, especially as it was a collaborative project between Portugal and India, including not only the material examination of the paintings but also the training of Indian officials from ASI to perform the same kind of examinations,” says Pereira.

In January, a team of eight people including those associated with the Laboratório HERCULES and Laboratório José de Figueiredo brought in instruments weighing from Portugal for a period of three weeks. And a team of 10 Indian officials, all chemistry graduates, were trained to understand how to deal with these instruments and how to get information from the paintings using these instruments.

“The aim was to understand what these instruments can inform us about the paintings because you cannot preserve anything without studying it,” says Pereira. And while viewers can see only one layer of the paintings, there are several others beneath it, he says. Thus, the idea was to understand which layers were lying there, which could then inform future actions towards preservation and conservation of the collection.

While they focused on 15 paintings, they minutely examined around eight of these. “It was a very important project because it showed that this is a shared history between Portugal and India. It was thus important to join together the knowledge in order to get more information,” says Pereira.

And what they discovered was that each layer showed a different restoration, while also revealing interesting information about the change in costume, court of arms, poses, etc, over the years. They were also able to get a better idea into the authorship of these paintings.

And different periods have different artists. The first set of 13 portraits for instance was commissioned by Viceroy Joao de Castro. They were sketched by Gaspar Correia, the Portuguese chronicler who had arrived in Goa with Afonso de Albuquerque. These were then handed over to a local artist to paint. “Unfortunately the name of the local artist is not mentioned. But later sources speak about an Indian painter of miniature art tradition that later converted to Christianity on the eve of his death. He was said to have been baptised as Constantine because the viceroy of that time was Dom Constantino de Bragança who wanted to be his godfather,” says Pereira.

Many other artists and their works followed over the years. Chief among these were the ones done in the 17th century by Manuel Godinho de Eredia, who was an important cartographer of Portuguese-Malay descent. In 1825, 47 paintings were said to have been restored by a Margao-based painter called Camilo. The restoration of the remaining paintings was then ordered by Jose Vieira da Fonseca in 1838.

Also noteworthy was the restoration work done by a Portuguese military man Manuel Gomes da Costa (who later went on to become the 15th president of the Portugal Republic) who had a way with water colours. “He decided to harmonise all the paintings to give them a brand new look, and to suit the aesthetics of that time ie during the Romantic Period, he darkened all the backgrounds,” says Pereira.

The later paintings were done on canvas, as there were then conditions available to preserve them accordingly. “All these were on display at the Viceroy’s Palace in Old Goa which no longer exists today,” says Pereira.

In fact, the team has also looked into learning more about the palace, how long it lasted, and the journey of the paintings since then. “The palace began to fall into ruins in 1812 and was then totally demolished in 1830. The paintings then came to the Adil Shah Palace in Panaji which became the new governor’s palace, and stayed there till the end of the 19th century,” says Pereira. These were then moved to Old Goa in a new building close to St Cajetan Church which was being planned as a museum.

However, they then moved back to the Adil Shah Palace later. It was only after Liberation that the paintings then shifted to the Convent of St Francis of Assisi where they are today.

It is also important to note that some of the portraits were taken in the 1950’s to Lisbon, to be restored. After Goa’s Liberation though, they did not return. And it was these paintings that were first studied deeply, layer by layer. This same methodology has now been replicated with the paintings studied here in Goa by Pereira, Reis, and the team.

“We are also working with the ASI museum in order to get a new display with all the information using new technologies so that people can learn more about these with their smartphones by scanning the QR codes. You can always keep updating the information, add animation, etc. We are also looking at making platforms with written printed matter so that people who do not have smart phones can also read and learn,” says Pereira.

And the team is looking at doing a follow up project soon. “The ASI has shown great interest in the conservation part. And as they are now used to working with these types of art, we hope to follow up with them with regards to the methodology of the conservation, and how this could be adapted to this type of climate and also train some officials to perform these kinds of treatments,” says Pereira.

She later claimed that she had performing arts in her, revealing that her mother was a singer and her dad was into theatre in college.

 Amala had changed her on-screen name to Anakha, on director Samy’s insistence, who cited that another actress, Amala had already made her name popular.

However, after the failure of her 2011 movie Sindhu Samaveli, she reverted to her birth name, since she felt that the replacement had brought her bad luck.

As early as 2011, when Amala was working on Deiva Thirumagal, she was romantically linked to director A. L. Vijay, but denied that the pair were dating.

On 7 June 2014, she got engaged to Vijay at Aluva in Kochi. The couple got married on 12 June 2014 at Mayor Ramanathan Chettiar Hall, Chennai.

In 2016, Amala and Vijay filed for a divorce due to a disagreement between her and her in-laws on continuing her acting career. They were granted a divorce in February 2017.
