Sky: Season of RiME
A Sky: Children of the Light x RiME fan season.
A mysterious red cloaked figure and a young crowned boy, Enu, have appeared in the kingdom of Sky. Accompany Enu on his journey to discover who this red cloaked figure is and to recall Enu's past.
I think Sky and RiME would work really well as a collab season. More thoughts under the cut!
---
Enu acts as an NPC companion during quests, much like the Little Prince. However, because he cannot fly and doesn't always want to hold hands, the player has to find more grounded ways to guide him. The player gets to experience Sky anew through Enu's eyes, and act as a friend and comfort through the joys and sorrows the journey brings.
There are five seasonal spirits and quests, one for each of the levels from RiME. Each of the spirits is an echo or memory of Enu's, and in the final quest you reunite him with these spirits in Orbit. I have a good idea of what cosmetics each of these spirits will offer. Denial brings a violin and humming emote, there's a costume to match the bird from Anger, a sentinel costume, a shade costume (and conch shell instrument), outfits to match both Enu and the red cloaked season guide, and many toys and props.
The season would take place in the Isle of Dawn, with the red cloaked figure acting as the season guide. A boat appears on one of the shores in Isle, which will take the player to a simplified version of the island from the first level of RiME.
The season credits would occur on a level that includes the boat from RiME's cutscenes, as well as the house from the finale. The level is a stark white plane, starting with the first wrecked ship. With each additional ship passed, the scene gains more color, leading to the house. Enu and Manu can be found inside, and their locations rotate depending on the day (like the office spirits.) An IAP item, Enu's Raincoat, would act like the Asteroid Jacket or Wings of AURORA, and would allow the player to visit this location.
This season would also go very well alongside a PC release for Sky👀. Perhaps there could be some kind of promotional discount for the season's iap through Epic or Steam if the player owns a copy of RiME. This would encourage players to buy and play the game, as the season would spoil some of the story.
Sky has touched on grief in the Season of Remembrance and The Little Prince. However, I believe a collab season with RiME would allow them to go more in depth with this theme. The story of RiME is something that creeps up on you and then hits devastatingly hard when everything falls into place. But it also offers a safe environment in which to feel those emotions. I'd love to see more of this kind of emotional storytelling in Sky and use the space to not only feel these emotions, but experience them with others. (It'd also be really entertaining to watch other players go through this ajhsgdfsf)

Gylt
Horror was once a rare gaming genre, with little variety, typified by the gameplay styles of Resident Evil and Silent Hill. With the rise of the indie scene, we suddenly saw a massive increase in horror games, such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Choo Choo Charles, and Poppy Playtime, which took the gameplay and themes in different directions. While horror was seen primarily as an adult-oriented genre, some of these indie horror games became popular with kids. In 2019, Tequila Works, the Spanish developer of such games as Deadlight and Rime, released a horror game that was not only more accessible to families but actually stars a kid, has a Pixar-esque art style and is focused on psychological horror more along the lines of Silent Hill, rather than focusing on jump scares. And they released it… as an exclusive on Google Stadia, Google’s failed experiment of a game-streaming service. (Google even had a deal where people who paid for Stadia Pro could get Gylt as a pack-in game.) In 2023, after the fall of Stadia, Gylt managed to break out and make its way to PlayStation, Xbox and the PC, followed by a Switch release in 2024.

[Review] Rime (PS4)
Tumblr media
Another Ico-like adventure.
Another Ico-esque title on my backlog is this 2017 game by Spanish studio Tequila Works. They have had success with a variety of genres and tones, but in this case the Mediterranean-inspired setting and vibrant colour palette give this game a nice flavour. Otherwise it's a solid platform-puzzling adventure with a decent story, even if there's something of a double-take at the end.
I'll deal with the story first since it involves a bit of a content warning (child death) in addition to a spoiler warning. You see, you think you're adventuring around a mysterious island as a "ye olde times" lost princeling, exploring ruins, fending off shadow creatures, befriending fox spirits and ancient robots, and ascending a monolithic tower... until an epilogue reveals that it was all some kind of fantasy of a modern grieving father. This wholesale reframing is interesting structurally, and I liked the idea that each chapter corresponded tonally with Kübler-Ross's stages of grief, but with how late and sudden this element is introduced and how confronting the subject matter, it came as something of an unpleasant shock for me personally.
Tumblr media
There are collectibles to find in hidden dead-ends or secret coves that tie into the fictional backstory of the prince, but I don't think anything really hints at the real surprise. So for most of the runtime you're just having a gentle fantasy adventure. The shadow creatures are creepy but don't pose much of a threat, and chapter 2 has a creepy reptilian bird monster that you have to hide from, but otherwise it's a nice conflict-light time.
Each chapter runs through a few puzzle ideas: shifting light and shadow, perspective, moving orbs around, things like this. The child (who I think is named as Enu in the credits) can clamber around, move boxes and such, but their main method of interaction is a quick shout which can activate magic statues as well as inflame braziers and oddly break pots (there are trophies for doing these a certain number of times). The puzzles are rarely challenging but can be decently clever and the game keeps up the variety through its five-odd hour runtime.
Tumblr media
I don't have much more to say about Rime but I did enjoy my time with it quite a bit. It's well-made, the environments and atmosphere are nice... it was a good chill-out game. It's clearly trying hard to say something with its story which I respect, even if it didn't quite land with me at the time. But damn if I didn't love shouting at every wall-mounted torch in a hallway on my way to the next bit.

Another game I would very much like to see Earth and Lunar play sometime. I know the SAMS and their sister channels usually play horror games, and this one has some horror or just scary elements to it.
I used concept art from the game for the background

«RIME DEVELOPER TEQUILA WORKS FILES FOR INSOLVENCY»
⚫️ gamesindustry.biz
«Tequila Works» –

Some Team Ico and RiME character sketches. I’ve included both the lineless version and the lineart because I think they look cool separately.
Enu might be from a different studio but I think he’d vibe with Ico and the boy. Their games share a lot in common.

Due to be available on both Steam and GOG. You've probably know League of Legends, right? The online battle arena where champions duel it out, vying for dominance. Now, step aside from the heated battles for a moment and think about the rich stories and worlds behind those champions. That's where Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story comes in for Steam Deck and Linux. Instead of a competitive arena, this as an adventure into the heart of one of the game's most compelling regions: the Freljord. This icy realm, with its vast landscapes, towering mountains, and chilling blizzards. Also, the stage where the story unfolds. It will be available on Wednesday, November 1st at 9:00 AM PT / 4:00 PM GMT / 5:00 PM CET. Picture this: Nunu, a young lad, is on a journey, searching for his mother. But he's not alone; Willump, his loyal and trusty companion, is right beside him. In Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story, their bond is as tight as you'd expect from two best friends. While they laugh, play snowball fights, and together. As a result, they face challenges that test their bond.

And challenges are aplenty in the Freljord. From navigating dangerous terrains, whether it be scaling heights or sledding down icy slopes. All the way to facing the wild elements of the land. Wolves, fierce and cunning, are only one of the many obstacles in Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story. Plus, the Freljord isn't just a barren, frozen wasteland. It's also full of enchantment, with magic that dances in the air and secrets buried deep beneath its icy surface. The duo's journey isn't just about finding Nunu's mother or having an adventure. It's about learning the true essence of the Freljord. The stories that bind its people, and the events that shaped its history. Along the way, they come across iconic figures in Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story. So you might recognize them if you're familiar with the world of League of Legends. Do to champions like Braum, the heart of the Freljord with his enormous shield. Ornn, the master craftsman who can forge anything; Volibear, the thunderous bear spirit. Also Lissandra, whose power over ice is both awe-inspiring and threatening. What sets this game apart from many others is its focus on story and exploration. Since it's a chance to dive deep into a universe that many only know from a battle point of view. Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story offers an intimate look into the lives, dreams, and struggles of its characters. That's something truly special.
