This is an ongoing collection of links* that should cover a whole range of bits and pieces relating to Dragonriders of Pern and Anne McCaffrey – from interviews to interesting articles!

* I check these regularly, but I cannot vouch for if the domains still exist and, if not, what is currently on them. A lot of resources relating to Pern are from the 90s/early 2000s and liable to be replaced by random hosting spam. EDIT: walks-the-ages has added some excellent comments about the Wayback Machine! The Dragonborn raises her eyebrows. "I fought the World-Eater and won."

"The World-Eater," says Lydia, "can't jump higher than a man is tall."

They're skirting the Blue Palace sparring-yard, the Dragonborn and her wife, watching the High Queen's newest shield-maid batter one of her sworn sisters—Helka, the Dragonborn thinks, and then poor Helka—into the ground like a tentpeg. Helka's face is flushed and furious. She’s starting to flail. Her opponent, her wooden sword flicking out in measured strokes, beats her backwards and down with all the mercy of a cat toying with a mouse.

Even Lydia looks impressed. The Dragonborn kisses the corner of her mouth for luck, swift and smiling, then ducks her disapproving look and strides into the sparring-yard. “Scapegrace!”

Helka breaks free of the barrage, eyes wide, and staggers into a bow. The High Queen’s newest shield-maid bares her teeth.

She's filled out in the weeks since they fetched her—screeching, thrashing, stinking of mange and mead—from the tavern in Bruma where she'd almost disemboweled the Dragonborn with a kick. She'd been gaunt as a draugr, then, with the same fanatic fire in her eyes. Now, after a bath and several suppers at Elisif’s own table, she looks almost alive: broad-shouldered, silken-furred, her tail lashing behind her like an outraged flag.

But her eyes, burning two hateful holes in the Dragonborn, are the same.

“Chaunter-cull,” she hisses, bristling, and smacks Helka’s sword from her hands. Helka yelps. The sword thuds into the slush at the Dragonborn’s feet. “Nothing worse to do?”

The Dragonborn, with a calm smile, stoops to pick it up. “I thought we might—”

Shiv Scapegrace swings at her head.

The Dragonborn, with a startled laugh, throws up her sword to block. Her opponent’s blade bounces off it—crack—with a violence that shudders through the wood and jars every bone in the Dragonborn’s arm. Then it whistles back again, tearing the crisp morning air like an arrow. The Dragonborn grits her teeth and bats it away. Her feet skid in the slush. She realizes, breathless and amused, that she’s floundering around with even less grace than Helka—

Her opponent flashes her teeth, then her blade. The Dragonborn finds herself flat on her back, as expected, with a sword-tip tickling her throat.

She smiles up the sword. “Shurri.”

Her opponent’s face freezes.

Then it wrinkles in a snarl. “Don’t call me that.”

“I—”

“Don’t never”—the High Queen’s newest shield-maid, her eyes blazing like ice, leans so close that her whiskers brush the Dragonborn’s face—“call me that.”

The Dragonborn searches her face for anything like satisfaction. She had wanted, she thinks ruefully, to give the other woman a fair fight: no ultimatum, no words of power, no Lydia to tackle her to the floor.

“I,” she says again, softly, “would like to be your friend.”

Her friend’s daughter stares. Then she straightens with a snort and turns away.

"Reckon you would," she says, and brushes the Dragonborn's face with her tail.

I would have to go with the bow and arrows. Taking the footnote into consideration, the bow would never break or deform and I would always have arrows. Getting the obvious out of the way, a bow is a silent long ranged weapon, ideal for hunting all types of game depending on draw weight. This is already a big attractor.

Secondly, the bowstring can also be used for assorted placeholder tasks assuming it is also similarly indestructible. Arrows are also useful in assorted situations, as they can be used as makeshift tentpegs and — depending on the arrowhead — other tasks such as a sharp but short knife for textile and leatherwork (modern steel broadheads can accomplish this task with ease) or even as a saw (flint or obsidian arrowheads possess serrated edges capable of sawing through small branches and saplings).

The bow itself, apart from its formidable long range capabilities, can also be used at close range in the form of a mid length staff. Assuming an English style longbow composed of one piece of wood, the thickness of the arms may provide enough heft to generate significant blunt force when used in the style of other similar staves; an English longbow is around 6 feet or 1.8 meters long, long enough to be considered a quarterstaff by some definitions, though due to its light weight it would likely be faster than a quarterstaff without hitting as hard.

Even if the arms are thinner and lighter, as in the style of a modern composite longbow (i.e. a laminated construction), force could still be generated by using it as an off-balance montante or zweihander, providing access to a potentially cumbersome but still effectively intimidating area-denial tool. There exist bows longer than the English longbow, such as the asymmetrical Japanese yumi, but I would think them too long and flexible to be used in this way.

The bow can also be used in difficult terrain as a walking staff, though of course many sticks taken from the forest floor would serve the same purpose. One could also fashion or find a spear tip and lash it to the bow, creating a spear which can be used for hunting or self defense. Again, any stick could achieve this, but since you have an unbreakable piece of straight wood I see no reason not to take advantage of it. Depending on the length of the bow it may even be possible to use it as a bow without removing the speartip, though the additional weight may make it sluggish and unbalanced.

Needless to say, please don't do any of these things with an actual bow except shoot with it. I'm just working from the provision that the bow is indestructible and arrows are infinite. I would have suggested using the arrows as fuel in the absence of dry kindling but I don't think it's fair to say they're indestructible yet also flammable.
