thinking oc thoughts...

everett has such a complex about helping and not hurting people, as well as a slightly smaller complex about not turning out like how he last saw his dad (i.e. murdering people left and right for seemingly no reason).

separately, i Really want him to become a worse person. i just think that him slowly turning into his father and continuing the cycle of borderline obsessive love and brutal violence for the sake of said love is SO spicy. i wrote a little paragraph about it yesterday after our d&d sesh and oughhhh.

because, like. ev has friends now, something he never really got as a kid. and as much as he wants to keep the amount of harm hes doing to zero, sooner or later someone is going to hurt or threaten his friends, and hes going to realize that yeah, he understands why his father did all that for him. because he'd do it for them. he'd do so many things for them. terrible, unspeakable things, maybe. but its for them. the ends justify the means, right?

is there a specific process you have for creating dnd characters, or do you just let the characters happen how they happen ?? :0

bit of both tbh. usually characters start with a Concept or Idea, and they kinda form themselves around this sort of base without much input from me.

example: caspian came to be around when i played return of the obra dinn with my friends. kept thinking about doomed sailors and lo n behold, theres a guy in my brain. he formed mostly separate from the campaign i played him in, but the dm did give me some things like one of his patrons being a black dragon and the whole slavery bit.

example 2: everett came to be from the idea of "guy who gets his consciousness put in a robot, possibly against his will", which i proceeded to flesh out over the course of several weeks to months. did a LOT of talking w my dm for him and my dm provided a lot of stuff i could use, like the terminal disease that killed him.

example 3: sallygale came to be from a dream, actually, but the base was "wild west angels and demons" and the dream simply gave me her name as well as a basic plot and a few other characters that exist in her universe. her appearance came from a lot of playing around with the symmetry tool in CSP, and the vibes followed suit.

example 4: ven came to be from the general idea of "guy who wakes up in a river with no memories", which i had attempted once before with a bad toxic dm, which. didnt work out. worked with my dm a TON since ven needed some sort of basis in the world (which i decided was cloning) and she was super cool and helped me out with a lot of ideas. initially expected him to be a cocky guy with a tendency to start trouble, but he ended up being just the sweetest happy-go-lucky guy with a tendency to simply End Up in trouble.

this is too many examples. i need to stop.

but yeah usually my Guys™ (gender neutral) start out with some sort of base concept that gets built upon and fleshed out, and then at some point they stop becoming my creations and start becoming their own little beings who sit in my head and give me brainrot.

they do pay rent, though. the rent is me torturing them.

the concept always comes before the stats/species/class/character sheet/etc, as i cant really get connected to a guy i make off a pre-made sheet.

i live! oc posting 3: tokyo drift

this is everett lovelace, hes a "half elf" (actually a warforged) transmutation wizard who's currently living through the two worst weeks of his life. he was a normal guy for most of his childhood, then caught a weird terminal mushroom disease. he did die from it (which he doesn't know) and his dad freaked out and made him a robot body over the course of a year. some fucked circumstances led to him getting his soul shunted back into the body before his dad wanted, and he proceeds to get almost killed by his dad on accident and have a truly awful time about That. hes on the run now and has a d&d party that he cares about, as well as so many issues. so many. sorry king.

i think two or three sessions ago he figured out he was a warforged with a really nice nat20 roll that led to him finding the catch that pops open his chest panel. drawings of that chest panel are depicted above. hes. yeah. hes not having a fun time about that.

current d&d character, hes having such a normal time about everything (lie) and im super excited to watch him get his shit kicked in even more >:]

What do your ocs wear to bed? Im thinking like, slumber party type shit

caspian: i have a drawing of him in his (modern) sleep clothes already, he sleeps in a tank top and boxers, or whatever the fantasy world equivalent of those are. probably underclothes. comfy and something you can still walk around in, just in case you need to be up for some reason.

trystan: shirtless and boxers. just about the only thing trystans actually okay with is his body, so hed be perfectly fine sleeping shirtless with no blankets in his room. though, given the number of times hes been to the hospital, i could say hospital gowns. lol. lmao, even

varah: im not even sure she sleeps, man. probably the clothes she walks around in, if she does, because she has no concept of normal human behaviour outside of what can be observed in public, and it simply wouldnt occur to her to have different sleeping clothes.

carmine: you bet ur ass they have the fanciest fuckin sleep clothes ever. fancy ass silk pajamas, shirt and pants. they do end up ditching most of the signs of their wealthy childhood eventually, but the sleep clothes definitely stays. i mean shit, its comfy, why not.

everett: technically, he has been running around our d&d campaign for the past two in-game weeks in his pajamas. just a short-sleeved shirt and comfy pants. the pants are definitely important considering, uh. the nature of the terminal disease that killed him (the first time). i wont get into details bc its kinda body horror, but lets just say it sucked.

caspian: so long as he knows that im not the creator of all his problems, we would stand in awkward silence for possibly forever.

varah: we'd definitely hit it off though i think i'd find her a little much towards the end of it.

everett: once we both figure out that we're just silly nerds, we'd talk for a long-ass time about our favorite things.

not gonna list all one hundred thirty four of my ocs but if i missed someone you want me to talk about (staring at all my friends who know all my blorbos), please let me know and ill do this for them

EVERETT: guy who died (doesn't know this) and got turned into a robot (has recently discovered this) and is happy with approximately none of it

honestly i think a good portion of his nightmares are reliving his "awakening" in his new body (which he still thinks was just an extension of the night he actually died). he wakes up fully cured of his terminal disease in an unfamiliar place, sees his kind and cool dad indiscriminately killing people, tries to run, gets shot in the back by his dad and almost killed (again) before his dad realizes that its him, and then makes a break for it. he's like 90% sure that his dad didn't mean it, but the 10% is what his nightmares are made of.

the remaining portion of ev's nightmares are like. banal shit like showing up for school and finding out there's a test. bc he's a nerd.

THOUGH. there's new nightmare material in the mix now that he has real friends and its "what if i hurt my friends and end up exactly like my dad" which hes already considered several times and really isnt happy about considering again.

object #4: is there an item your character liked that they can't get back?

ev had a stuffed owlbear at home named owlbert thats hug-sized and he slept with it every night from the night he got it to the night he died. technically there is nothing physically stopping him from getting it back besides distance, but there is nothing he'd rather do less than go back home at this point in time. something something physical manifestation of a childlike innocence and a life lived that won't ever be the same even if you do get it back.

object #6: what is something your character is proud to own?

his spellbook! his current spellbook is just a plain empty book he bought and rewrote all his spells in over the course of a week bc he didn't have his old spellbook on him upon revival, but hes still proud to own it. its a physical representation of all of his knowledge leading up to this point, and he is proud of being someone who Knows Things and Is Smart.

weather and nature #11: what part of nature would your character most resonate with?

hes a very science guy by virtue of being a nerd and a wizard. i think hed really enjoy and resonate with the way everything in nature is linked together. ecosystems are one big web and nothing can exist without everything beneath it and everything above it, and he'd find that vaguely reassuring. everything and everyone has a place in the world, and no one can exist without one another.

hobbies #7: what is a talent that your character is proud of?

feels like a somewhat derivative answer, but he'd really be proud of his ability to do magic. he spent a long time learning on the side in addition to school and once he stopped being able to go to school due to terminal disease moments, he devoted most of his time to learning what he could do that could affect the world with his mind rather than his body. his magic is a symbol of his persistence throughout his childhood as well as a finely honed skill that has been practiced for years now to get to the point where it is.

a lot of ev's character centers around the mind and its capacities, esp re: intelligence and all that, which. he IS a wizard. thats kind of a given. but still. i think he'd go insane if he ever was put in a situation where he Lost his capacity to think clearly and use that powerful +5 intellect of his. writing notes to send to my dm now...

quick update if anyone was interested: we did experience the horrors quite badly. well. some of us did. ev had a normal night. one party member almost got killed in a dream (and possibly in the waking world as well) before being rescued by another party member. third party member went and nonconsensually turned someone into a vampire. fourth party member tried to sleep as little as possible out of spite and did not succeed.

anyways ev spent his night downloading primordial into his docent, reading every book he could in the guy we're staying at's house, and writing a "send this to my dad if i die" letter. and sleeping ig but hes an automaton he barely needs that anymore.
