How can temporary placement improve your productivity during peak periods?
In the fast-paced world of business, efficiency is key. Whether you're a small startup or a large corporation, navigating peak periods can be a daunting task. This is where temporary placement services shine. By seamlessly integrating temporary staff into your workforce during these high-demand periods, you can significantly boost productivity and streamline operations.
Understanding Temporary Placement Services
Before delving into the benefits, it's important to grasp what temporary placement services entail. Essentially, these services provide businesses with skilled individuals on a short-term basis to fulfill specific roles or tasks. These temporary employees, also known as contingent workers, can range from administrative assistants to IT specialists, depending on your company's needs.
Flexibility in Staffing
One of the primary advantages of temporary placement services is the flexibility they offer. Unlike permanent hires, temporary staff can be brought in and released as needed, allowing you to scale your workforce according to demand. This agility is particularly valuable during peak periods when workload fluctuations are common.
Rapid Deployment
Another benefit is the speed at which temporary staff can be deployed. With temporary placement services, you can quickly fill vacant positions or augment your existing team without the lengthy recruitment process associated with permanent hires. This rapid deployment ensures that your operations remain uninterrupted during crucial times.
Specialized Skills
Temporary employees often bring specialized skills to the table. Whether it's expertise in a particular software, language proficiency, or industry-specific knowledge, these individuals can plug skill gaps within your organization, enhancing overall productivity. Moreover, their fresh perspective can introduce innovative ideas and approaches to problem-solving.
Boosting Productivity During Peak Periods
Now, let's explore how temporary placement services can specifically improve productivity during peak periods:
Meeting Surges in Demand
During peak periods, such as holiday seasons or special promotions, businesses often experience a surge in demand for their products or services. By leveraging temporary placement services, you can quickly augment your workforce to meet this increased demand without overburdening your permanent staff. This ensures that orders are fulfilled promptly, customer satisfaction is maintained, and revenue opportunities are maximized.
Handling Special Projects
Peak periods may also coincide with the execution of special projects or initiatives. Whether it's launching a new product line, conducting a marketing campaign, or implementing IT upgrades, these endeavors require dedicated manpower. Temporary employees can be enlisted to provide additional support, allowing your core team to focus on strategic tasks while ensuring that project deadlines are met.
Reducing Overtime Costs
Relying solely on permanent staff to handle peak periods often leads to excessive overtime costs. Not only does this strain your budget, but it can also result in burnout and decreased morale among employees. Temporary placement services offer a cost-effective alternative by providing skilled workers on an as-needed basis, eliminating the need for costly overtime hours.

✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥
Neptune, the dreamy and mystical planet, brings both enchantment and shadows as it journeys through the astrological houses. Its influence can evoke a sense of magic, spirituality, and creativity, but it also has the potential to cast a fog of confusion, delusion, and escapism.
✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥
✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥
Neptune in the 1st House - House of Self
The enchantment of Neptune in the 1st house can be enticing, but its shadow side can manifest as identity issues and an inclination to escape from the harsh realities of life. Individuals with this placement may struggle to establish clear boundaries, often absorbing the emotions and issues of those around them. This can lead to a sense of confusion about their own identity, as they become chameleonic, adapting to others' expectations. The allure of substances or daydreaming might provide temporary relief, but it can lead to a pervasive sense of self-deception and disconnection from their true selves.
Neptune in the 2nd House - House of Values
While Neptune in the 2nd house adds a touch of glamour to one's values and possessions, it can also lead to financial instability due to idealized financial decisions. The shadow side may involve a tendency to overspend on escapist pleasures, such as lavish vacations or excessive indulgence. Money can become a source of confusion and escapism, rather than a means of practical security. Beware of deceptive financial schemes or unwise investments that can lead to substantial losses.
Neptune in the 3rd House - House of Communication
Neptune's influence in the 3rd house can foster creativity in communication but can also result in a propensity for misunderstanding and deceit. The shadow side can lead to a struggle with truthfulness, as individuals with this placement may resort to white lies or delusions to avoid confrontations or preserve their idealized self-image. They might find it challenging to express themselves clearly, often resorting to vague or cryptic communication, which can create confusion and mistrust in relationships.
Neptune in the 4th House - House of Home and Family
The dreamy allure of Neptune in the 4th house can infuse the home environment with a sense of enchantment and creativity. However, the shadow side may involve unresolved family issues, secrets, or addiction problems that are concealed behind a façade of tranquility. Individuals with this placement might struggle to establish emotional boundaries with family members, leading to emotional overwhelm and escapism through emotional numbing or substance abuse.
Neptune in the 5th House - House of Creativity and Pleasure
In the realm of creative expression and pleasure, Neptune in the 5th house can inspire artistic endeavors and romantic ideals. However, the shadow side may manifest as unrealistic romantic fantasies or creative blocks stemming from self-doubt and a fear of rejection. Individuals with this placement might find themselves caught in a cycle of seeking unattainable romantic partners or escaping reality through indulgent and potentially harmful pleasures.
Neptune in the 6th House - House of Service and Health
Neptune in the 6th house can lead to a strong desire to help others but may also result in blurred boundaries and a tendency to sacrifice one's well-being for others. The shadow side can involve a susceptibility to unhealthy work environments, where individuals become enablers or victims of manipulation. They might struggle with self-neglect, pursuing self-destructive habits or substance abuse as a means of escape from the pressures of daily life.
Neptune in the 7th House - House of Relationships
In the realm of partnerships and relationships, Neptune in the 7th house can create an idealized view of love and a longing for soulful connections. However, the shadow side may involve a tendency to attract or idealize partners who are emotionally unavailable, deceptive, or even addictive. Individuals with this placement might find themselves entangled in codependent relationships, where they sacrifice their own needs and boundaries for the sake of an illusory love.
Neptune in the 8th House - House of Transformation
Neptune in the 8th house can deepen one's connection to the mysteries of life but may also lead to an obsession with hidden truths and secrets. The shadow side can manifest as a preoccupation with dark or taboo subjects and an inclination toward manipulation or deceit in matters of shared resources. There is a potential for individuals with this placement to be deceived or financially exploited by others, leading to financial instability and emotional turmoil.
Neptune in the 9th House - House of Philosophy and Higher Learning
While Neptune in the 9th house can foster a spiritual and philosophical outlook on life, its shadow side may involve a susceptibility to cult-like beliefs or dogma. Individuals with this placement might become lost in a world of delusions and spiritual escapism, where they reject practical realities in favor of idealized spiritual pursuits. This can lead to a sense of disillusionment and isolation from grounded wisdom.
Neptune in the 10th House - House of Career and Public Image
In the realm of career and public image, Neptune in the 10th house can create an aura of mystique but may also lead to confusion regarding one's professional path. The shadow side may involve a tendency to deceive or be deceived in the workplace, leading to career setbacks and a loss of reputation. Individuals with this placement might struggle to distinguish between their authentic professional aspirations and illusory ambitions.
Neptune in the 11th House - House of Friends and Social Groups
While Neptune in the 11th house can foster empathy and idealism within social circles, its shadow side may involve a susceptibility to deception or disillusionment in friendships and group affiliations. Individuals with this placement might idealize friends or become entangled in deceptive group dynamics, ultimately leading to feelings of betrayal or isolation. The allure of escapism through social activities can be particularly pronounced.
Neptune in the 12th House - House of the Subconscious
Neptune's natural domain in the 12th house deepens one's connection to the subconscious but may also lead to profound emotional struggles. The shadow side can involve a tendency to escape from reality through addiction or spiritual delusions, creating a sense of inner chaos and isolation. Individuals with this placement might grapple with unresolved trauma or psychic wounds that require careful attention and healing.
✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥
✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥༻∞✧༺♥
Navigating Neptune's darker aspects through the houses is a profound journey, one that demands self-awareness and a commitment to confronting illusions and delusions. By acknowledging and addressing these challenges, individuals can harness the transformative and spiritual power of Neptune while navigating the shadows of self-deception
(this is intended to appear somewhat disorienting)

A big Teddy's eyes... Another Christmas repair story
Teddy's person's person wrote last month. Teddy was fairly big -- over 2 feet tall, nice and squishy, but blind due to a run-in with a dog, and with some wounds that needed treating. The person also hoped he could enjoy a spa and be home in time for Christmas. A quick glance a his diagnosis photos showed that yes, his injuries were treatable, he'd dry fairly quickly, and we should be able to get him home for Christmas. Here are some of those diagnosis photos:
He'd also lost quite a bit of weight, but the spa would take care of that.
Teddy took a direct commuter flight to the hospital from SoCal and we got him right into his bubble bath:
Once dry and restuffed, I stitched up his wounds and then it was time to determine new eye placement. The eye sockets were too badly damaged to tell the original eye location. So I sent a couple photos of pins temporarily in place to figure out where his eyes went:
His person's person made a selection, and then they had to choose actual eyes:
I know his head looks a bit odd... that's because it's easiest to install eyes before all the stuffing is in. So for placement I had temporary stuffing, for eye color the stuffing had come out a bit. His person's person chose solid black eyes. Here's Teddy all better and ready to fly home:
Teddy arrived home safely and his person's person wrote:
Teddy has arrived safely thank you so much! He looks wonderful! I appreciate all the effort you put into making it an easy experience. Just simply taking the time to ask and confirm placement of the eyes or the amount of stuffing made it a very enjoyable experience. I will definitely pass along your name to anyone I know in the future that may be looking for this kind of service! I hope your holidays are wonderful! Thank you again!
He was all set for a happy holiday reunion with his person!

On Being a Published Writer: Without a Degree
This is a bit of a vulnerable share today, and I am writing it after a sleepless night, the monster of anxiety and shame weighing heavily on my chest. However, I have come far in life and undergone an incredible amount of healing, and refuse to be ashamed of my past. I hope sharing this can help even one person like me remember that when it comes to craft, when it comes to art, the only thing stopping you from being worthy is you.
This year, I became a published writer. After years of hard work and dedication to my craft, I finally felt good enough to begin submitting my work to literary magazines. I'm proud of that accomplishment. It's a little tag I get to add to my bio now as I submit work that helps make me feel *valid.* But that quickly, all it takes is for someone to remind me that I did not have access to a degree, that I did not learn from the best, and I will spend the rest of my life without a formal education behind my writing, and they achieve the goal they set out: to make me feel less than for not having their background.
In America, the education system is for profit and public school system inconsistent. There are many factors that can contribute to whether or not a person gets through it successfully, and it often has little to do with intelligence, work ethic, or strength of character and drive before the age of 18.
So here is my story:
I graduated high school with a 2.1 GPA.
My first hospitalization (out of the 17 I would have in my life) for edometriomas happened at age 15. I spent the majority of high school struggling with chronic pain, stage four endometriosis and the accompanying endometriomas cysts, and illness. By age 16, social services was threatened by my school to be called on my home for suspected neglect and abuse. I moved out of my house that year, and was given temporary guardianship by a friends family.
By the end of my senior year, I continued to bounce around between friends houses, sometimes sleeping in my car, and struggled to keep on top of my coursework. I was enrolled in the work study program designed for students who had to keep a job during their high school years, and earned school credits for staying employed.
Despite all of this, I still maintained high grades in Advance Placement literature and language, proceeded to get 5's on my AP tests (a perfect score, and a rare accomplishment) as well as near perfect scores on my ACT's. I spent every spare second reading and writing from the moment I learned how. My intelligence and comprehension were not the issue. My health and my home life were.
The only reason I got into college at all was because I decided to audition for a school play freshman year. Much to my surprise, I was cast in the lead role, and thus the course of my life was set. I poured everything I had into acting, I finally had a purpose and something to keep me out of having to go home after school. Still, applying for colleges was one of the most stressful and shame inducing experiences of my life. I got into many top performance programs in the country, then would not get into the university itself with my GPA. The conservatories that did not look into school performance did not provide the financial assistance required for me to attend.
There was one university that offered limited talent admissions that would allow the university admission requirements to be overlooked for students that had displayed exceptional talent in their specialized field of study. I had to put together a request for the school board, complete with letters from my high school teachers providing context for my low GPA paired with high test scores, character assessments on my likely ability to maintain the minimum required GPA in college, as well as a letter from the head of the performing arts department of the university stating that I was worthy of this talent exception. The wait was unbearable. But I was accepted. And I was approved for the work study program that allowed me to gain employment at the university to help offset the cost.
I felt like my whole life had changed in college. I had gotten in. I had gotten out. I was a new person, no one knowing about my past or the stain of my struggles. I had a fresh start. While I continued to battle my illness throughout college, it was manageable with a consistent bed to sleep in every night, as well as access to physical and mental health services. And although I tested out of being required to take any English classes with AP, I still filled my elective credits with writing classes. Screenwriting, playwriting, poetry, creative writing. Performing became my work, and writing became my joy. I took every class that sounded remotely interesting, often filling my schedule more than required on top of my work and performance load.
I am withholding some of the more personal details of my life, but when I finally moved out to LA, I hit the ground running. I accomplished more in a few years than fellow artists and performers who had been out there for more than a decade. And I valued every person I met. I was in small, independent theatre shows with Juliard grads. I was on professional sets with wildly naturally talented people working to get their GED with no formal education but that undeniable *it* factor. People from all walks of life set out for the Angel City to make it, and I was one of them. I also began writing again, this time short films and audition monologues. I began writing pieces for friends and classmates at their request. I secured my first talent agent with a performance piece that I wrote, along with an offer to renegotiate my contract to include literary representation should I complete a script worth shopping. I began to organize applications for writing fellowships at top studios, when my condition became so severe the only option to move forward with my life was surgery. And then my life completely changed again.
I came out of that surgery with nerve damage that left me unable to walk for six months, as well as developed a new permanent nervous system disorder.
My career and my life never recovered. I was permanently changed. However, during that time, I turned one of my sci-fi short films I had written into a 160k word novel, with outlines for a trilogy. While it was one of the darkest times of my life, writing got me through it. I moved out of Los Angeles to a more affordable city and threw myself into writing. I learned that ivy league schools like Stanford, Harvard, and Yale shared their syllabi for continued study coursework online, including the required textbooks for the courses. Example here. I took myself through the textbooks and coursework of top schools, I took every local workshop possible when it was in budget. Any education on craft that was within my means, I reached for.
I will never be able to change the course of my life. I will likely never be able to go back to school. However, this amazing video by Bandon Sanderson helped me overcome my shame, my lack of access to returning to higher education when my life and career were irrevocably changed: Be Anything But an English Major
I had already done what he had encouraged, pick a subject I was passionate about, fill my college coursework with things I found interesting, and let it inform my writing. While this is not to disrespect or degrade English majors or say successful authors think the degree is worthless, I am simply sharing to say this video helped ME combat against English majors who made me feel worthless for not having access to their diploma.
So to anyone feeling insecure today, you do not need a degree in the arts. Whether you want to be an author, an actor, a painter, a fashion designer, a poet. And I say this as someone whose greatest privilege and joy in life was getting a performing arts degree.
We must continue to prioritize art being accessible, value diverse backgrounds, and wish for it to be open and available to all. We must continue to treat art as subjective, and reject ideals that learning from a certain set of paid individuals makes all other opinions, choices, or ideas invalid.
There is no dollar amount I could give to a piece of paper that would make my mind, my intelligence, and my ability to organize and understand words in an impactful way that would make me more valid than I am today. There is no degree that could replace my work ethic, my empathy, my desire to write stories to do good. To give something to the world and help people survive in the ways that I had needed to survive.
Maybe I'll tell this story again one day, and it will help another young person with my background believe there may be more in life than the cards they were dealt. Maybe this will be the first and last time sharing these words. Maybe I'll never get another piece published, but will continue to write fanfic and poetry and prose pieces to share on the internet for free because I believe in my heart it is valuable. To look at myself, and my work, and deem myself worthy of my efforts and passion.
I am proud to be a member of the community of published writers without a degree.
I am even more proud to be a member of online fandoms full of writers, artists, creators, contributors and more who give their free time and energy towards something that does nothing more than make others happy.
So,
to the people who look at the stars and wish.
to the stars who listen— and the dreams that are answered,
this one is for you.

Child Removal from Low-Income Romani Families Raises Severe Human Rights Concerns in Bulgarian Child Welfare System
Recent cases in Bulgaria have shed light on significant human rights issues within child welfare practices, particularly affecting vulnerable, low-income families, mainly of Romani origin. The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) and the Equal Opportunities Initiative are supporting two important legal proceedings representing two different families: the Marinov and Kovachev families. Both highlight crucial issues regarding family rights and potential injustices within Bulgaria's child protection system. The removal of children from their families by child protection services is deeply concerning—mainly when it is based on poverty alone and occurs without clear explanation, substantial justification, or properly informing the family. While this practice should aim to protect children, it frequently fails to address the root causes of family struggles, leading to discriminatory practices, human rights abuses, and unnecessary trauma for both children and parents.
Marinov Family
The Marinov family—parents Andrey and Ivanka and their four children—faced a challenging situation when the children were removed on the grounds of poverty and placed in a Family-Type Accommodation Centre (FTAC). Andrey recently applied for legal recognition of their guardianship of three of the children, while the youngest was already recognised at birth. On August 1, 2023, the eldest child returned to live with his grandfather without informing his parents, prompting them to seek help from the Second District Police Department in Sofia to locate their son.
On January 12, 2023, police found and detained the eldest child at a Home for Temporary Accommodation of Minors in Sofia. Andrey was informed that his four children would be transferred to back to the FTAC. Child Protection employees took the other three children from Ivanka, who claims she was misled—they told her the children would be taken to the Second Regional Police Department for pickup after an hour rather than informing her of their placement in the FTAC.
The parents filed a complaint with Sofia City's Administrative Court, and a child rights lawyer was hired to represent them. In April 2023, the lawyer discovered an administrative order placing the children in FTAC for 3 years and mandating the parents to attend sessions to improve their parenting skills. The lawyer raised concerns that bias regarding the family's ethnicity and economic status affected the officer’s decision on parental skills sessions after just a single home visit, concluding that the family’s living conditions were below the poverty line.
During this time, their eldest son reported instances of abuse and harassment at the FTAC, both towards himself and his siblings. On July 11, 2024, the Marinov family initiated legal actions with the Elin Pelin District Court to reintegrate the children into their family. Social Services supported the reintegration, and after open hearings on August 5, 2024, the court ruled in favour of the family on August 29, 2024. The lawyer's request for immediate execution was granted, paving the way for the family's reunion.
Kovachev Family
Aleksandar and Elena are young parents struggling to keep custody of their newborn son, Stefan. Despite Aleksandar’s willingness to care for his child and partner, authorities placed Stefan in a “Mother and Baby Unit,” effectively separating the family. Aleksandar encountered significant obstacles in obtaining legal recognition of his child, with authorities refusing to accept his declaration of paternity. The Shumen Social Service Directorate (SSD) cited concerns about his ability to provide the necessary living conditions and resources despite Aleksandar’s expressed intention to care for both mother and child. Social services employees allegedly threatened Aleksandar with imprisonment for his relationship with Elena.
An appeal against the SSD's order was filed, leading to ongoing court proceedings, and transferred to the Razgrad Administrative Court, where a hearing was held on June 12, 2024.
This case brings to light several societal and legal issues, including the rights of young parents, the welfare of children born to minors, and the balance between state intervention and family unity. Initially, the Razgrad Court decided against Aleksandar on June 26, 2024. The case is now pending appeal before the Supreme Administrative Court. The ERRC is exploring ways to escalate the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
Both cases highlight biases and discrimination in procedure, a lack of regard for family rights protection, and a focus on punishing racialised poverty often over the children's best interests within child welfare systems. They also shed light on the myriad pitfalls and barriers faced by Romani parents and their children as they navigate the child protection system.
The economic situation of a family alone does not affect parental abilities. These cases emphasise the urgent need for reform in child welfare practices to better align with human rights standards and the best interests of children and families. Only through such reforms can Bulgaria create a system that truly protects and supports its most vulnerable citizens, particularly low-income Romani families. The ERRC remains committed to advocating for families' rights and ensuring that legal processes effectively uphold these rights, regardless of racialised poverty.
The names of individuals and families were changed in this article to protect their anonymity.

“An Absolute Massacre” – The New Orleans Slaughter of July 30, 1866
Reconstruction Era National Historical Park
Political Cartoonist Thomas Nast drew this political cartoon, "The Massacre at New Orleans," criticizing President Andrew Johnson for his role in permitting the violence to unfold in New Orleans on July 30, 166
The Confederate military and government collapsed in the Spring and Summer of 1865, effectively ending the Civil War with the United States preserved and slavery destroyed. But the violence was far from over. White resistance to Black citizenship during Reconstruction often turned violent – as it did in New Orleans on July 30, 1866. During the war, President Abraham Lincoln had hoped that Louisiana, with a strong US military presence in Louisiana would serve as the model for readmitting states back to the United States. In 1864, the state ratified a new constitution that abolished slavery, but did not grant Black Louisianans the right to vote – something that President Lincoln began to consider as the war ended the next year.
In his last speech, delivered on April 11, 1865, Lincoln openly expressed his desire to enfranchise select freed people and emphasized that “…voters in the heretofore slave-state of Louisiana have sworn allegiance to the Union… held elections, organized a State government, adopted a free-state constitution, giving the benefit of public schools equally to black and white, and empowering the Legislature to confer the elective franchise upon the colored man.
Their Legislature has already voted to ratify the constitutional (Thirteenth) amendment recently passed by Congress, abolishing slavery throughout the nation.”1 In the crowd was John Wilkes Booth. Incensed at the thought of Black citizenship and voting, Booth assassinated President Lincoln a few days later. The violence did not stop at Ford’s Theatre.
Harry T. Hays had served as a General in the Confederate Army. But in the Summer of 1866, he was the Sheriff of New Orleans, and deputized a posse of ex-Confederates to confront a citizen's convention in the city.
Gilder Lehrman Institute
This image from Harpers Weekly depicts Confederate veterans opening fire on the crowd in New Orleans. The placement of the US flag in the drawing served as a reminder to readers that some former Confederates had not yet accepted the outcome of the war.
Library of Congress
In a matter of approximately two hours, 34 African American supporters were killed, while the wounded numbered 119. Three of the delegates who had assembled in the Mechanics Institute were killed, while 17 were wounded, and approximately 200 others arrested. When the streets around the Mechanics Institute fell quiet, General Baird ordered martial law, which remained in effect into early August. On August 1, the Cleveland Daily Leader published sentiments that were shared by many other papers across the North: “Remember that this work was done by the constituted authorities of the city of New Orleans, rebels in record and in heart, but placed in power over loyal men by the policy of a renegade President. Remember that these scenes are but a prelude of what is to be… if Mr. Johnson’s policy shall be carried out.”5 Paired with news of the tragedy that occurred in Memphis months before, the New Orleans massacre contributed to major changes in Reconstruction policy. The 1866 elections saw to it that a Radical Republican majority ruled in both the House of Representatives and Senate, and ultimately contributed to the passing of the 14th and 15th Amendments. It could even be said that the violence which transpired on July 30, 1866, in a twist of irony, gave rise to several policies that would be enacted in following years, including Federal military presence in the South, temporary disenfranchisement of former Confederates, and for a population of more than four million freed people - the right to vote. 1 Lincoln, Abraham, and Scott Yenor. “Document 5: Last Public Address.” Reconstruction: Core Documents, Ashbrook Center, Ashland University, 2018, pp. 13–17. 2 O'Donovan, Susan, and Beverly Bond. “‘A History They Can Use’: The Memphis Massacre and Reconstruction's Public History Terrain.” The Journal of the Civil War Era, 10 Jan. 2018, www.journalofthecivilwarera.org/2016/08/history-can-use-memphis-massacre-reconstructions-public-history-terrain/. 3Reynolds, Donald E. “The New Orleans Riot of 1866, Reconsidered.” Louisiana History: The Journal of the Louisiana Historical Association, vol. 5, no. 1, 1964, pp. 5–27. In my never ending search for the best boundaries to maintain my sanity, I think I need to really hold myself accountable for less emotional involvement in this case. I promised myself only indirect communication either Mom and that’s been working well. But I’m hearing about the details of her stupid decisions through the social worker. I’m also getting massively frustrated with the slow pace of getting a new placement for Older Brother. Partially that was because I mentally wanted to keep him out of the temporary placement so I was pushing and pushing for the progress towards the permanent placement. But now I have decided to just name a deadline, which based on the current timeline should allow him to enter permanent placement on 26 July like they are saying he can. If they mess it up, that’s not my fault. I need to stop pushing.
I’m going to meet the social worker tonight, get a dump of information on the case and then ask her to turn off the information switch. Ask her not to contact me unless she needs something or unless she had a confirmed date that Older Brother is moving to temporary or permanent. And we can try to maintain as little info flow as possible. I need her to help me manage my unhealthy addiction to the drama. I think I’m stuck with the cycle of the adrenaline rush of being angry, which sends me into a rant-to-everyone stage, and then the exhaustion stage and then I get riled up again.
Maybe I need to even ask the social worker to not give me an update about the case tonight. Maybe we just focus on the many outstanding issues about the kids services. But like any true addict, I’m like “Give me one more hit and then I’ll quit.” So I’m going to continue with foster care as my drug of choice today and then I’m going to do a 3 month foster care rehab starting tomorrow morning (I swear). I will only the bare minimum interaction with the social worker. No pushing for the stipend (but I will take a meeting if they finally arrange one). I will withdraw my request to meet Mom and the social worker together to better understand what Mom wants from the future. (I need to live in the present for now.) I will only supervise calls between the kids and mom and basic logistics, no more supervising visits with Mom. No involvement in Older Brother’s case at all, will let the other foster mom handle that.
I will continue to focus on being the best foster parent to Younger Brother that I can. I will continue to advocate for services for him as needed. I will continue to fill him with love and joy and care. I will continue to say positive things about his mom to him. I will do my best to manage my own mental sanity and keep my performance at work at an adequate level so hopefully he can live with me for as long as needed. And if I have the mental energy, I will also do a few overnights or activities with his siblings so I can keep a connection with all the kids and help support their bonds.
I don’t think this is the best situation for the 4 kids and I’m guessing it will delay the timeline of the hopeful reunification because I won’t be pushing for it. But I think I need to try this path for 3 months and see if that helps. Because if I continue as is, I know I will burn out and end up needing to disrupt Younger Brother’s placement. And I think that will be worse for everyone. So let’s at least give the contribution I am capable of giving instead of ending up giving nothing.

Your Strongest Soldier | Levi Ackerman x You | Chapter I
Starting a new job can be exciting, but a familiar undercurrent of anxiety tempers your enthusiasm. Each job is different, you think to yourself, and you never know in advance what you’ll be forced to see or be asked to do.
You began working as a medic toward the end of the Marley Mid-East War, so your earliest memories on the job are of binding soldiers’ wounds, administering fluids, and covering the faces of the dead with shrouds. Many times, when your shift ended you were too exhausted to go home right away. Instead, you would sit on the darkened curb, looking up at the stars until your hands stopped shaking and your tears ran dry.
A lot changed after the Battle of Heaven and Earth - some changes were obvious, like the absence of the Walls that once protected the citizens of Paradis from the Titan threat. With the Walls gone, new towns and homesteads seemed to pop up every day, and you next worked as a traveling nurse in these burgeoning communities. You still witnessed illness and death, but you also delivered babies and set the broken bones of children whose roughhousing went a step too far. The fresh air of the countryside revitalized you, and the world began to seem colorful, even hopeful, once again.
Now, you step off the streetcar and begin following the directions hastily scrawled on the note in your hand. You are here in Mitras because you recently accepted a temporary placement as a home health assistant. The details were sparse, but based on the opulence of the neighborhood in which you find yourself, it seems likely that the patient is a retired government official or soldier. One of the only things you know for sure is the timeframe - the placement service said that the position would only be needed for one month.
Your directions lead you to a two-story townhouse in a quiet residential area. The house is one of the largest dwellings you’ve ever visited, but it is also the smallest building on the street. A high stone wall wraps around one side of the house, and through a wrought-iron gate you can see flowers blooming in a private garden. At your knock, the front door opens to reveal a petite young woman with flowing black hair.
“Welcome!” she says, opening the door fully to invite you in. “You must be from the placement service, right?”
“Yes, I’m Y/N,” you answer, and she introduces herself as Gabi Grice.
“Here, let me show you where you can put that,” Gabi offers, gesturing to the hefty bag slung on your shoulder. She takes you directly upstairs and shows you to a modest guest room. Once you put down your things, Gabi begins walking you through the house and shows you the parlor, study, dining room, and kitchen.
As you go, Gabi explains that she is newly married, and today she and her husband will be leaving for their honeymoon. The husband she mentioned, Falco, materializes shortly thereafter with a suitcase in each hand. He greets you briefly before returning to his last-minute preparations for their trip.
“It sounds like you’re going to have a lovely time,” you tell Gabi. “But are you saying that the house will be… vacant while you’re away?” You’re starting to worry that what Gabi and Falco really need is a housesitter, not a nurse, but then Gabi explains:
“No, no, our housemate will be staying behind.”
“Oh, so your housemate is my patient?” you ask, noting that Gabi winces slightly at your usage of the term ‘patient.’
“Yes, that’s right,” Gabi answers. “His name is Levi Ackerman. He was hurt pretty badly during his time with the corps, and he’s doing really well now, but…” Here, Gabi’s voice drops to a whisper. “…We would spend the whole trip worrying if he were left here alone.”
“I completely understand,” you say, giving Gabi’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “And I promise you, he will be in good hands. Now, did you want to introduce us before you go?” Falco came into the room while you and Gabi were talking, and you see him exchange a look with his wife.
“He’s… not exactly happy about all this,” Falco responds. “And, honestly, we are already running a bit late as it is. He is out in the garden right now so, if it’s alright, we may just tell him goodbye and let him know you’ve arrived.”
This is utter bullshit, Levi thinks to himself. He is seated in the garden, a walking stick propped up on the chair beside him as he takes in the afternoon sun. Some people say that spending time outdoors is good for the soul, but Levi is just getting more and more pissed off the longer he sits here.
On some level, Levi can recognize that Gabi and Falco are coming from a good place. It was a battle to get them to take this trip at all, and then it took weeks for Levi to convince the newlyweds that they really, truly could go without him. He thought that would be the end of it, but instead they went behind his back and hired a NURSE to stay in the house with him. Levi’s been stewing over it since he found out.
Can’t Gabi and Falco see how well I’m doing? he rages to himself. Do they think if they aren’t here, I’m going to forget how to wipe my own ass all of the sudden?
Even after all this time, it’s like they don’t believe that he can be independent. They still think he needs handholding on a daily basis. And it fucking hurts.
~~~~~
It’s been a while since Gabi and Falco left, and through the kitchen window you can see that the man in the garden hasn’t moved. It’s going to be awkward, you think, but finally you decide to break the tension. You open the side door and walk up the path towards where Levi sits with his back to you. He speaks first:
“Listen, I’m sure you are great at what you do, but as far as I’m concerned this is going to be a waste of your time.”
Levi turns around to look you in the face and continues, “You’ll get paid either way, so you may as well just go to the bar and get trashed tonight. I don’t need you here.”
The dismissiveness in his eyes and the disdain on his face stop you in your tracks for a moment, but you won’t give up so easily.
“Let’s not get off on the wrong foot, sir,” you reply in your kindest tone. “I was hired to do a job and I intend to earn my pay.”
“Good for you,” Levi mutters. You ignore this comment and continue:
“Why don’t we start over, you and I — what can I call you?”
The man looks like he would rather be fighting a fifty-meter Wall Titan than having this conversation right now, but after a long moment he responds. “I’m Levi Ackerman.”
“It’s great to meet you, Levi,” you respond. “I’m Y/N Zoe.”
“New Deal policies focused on promoting domestic roles for women, such as sewing, cleaning, canning, and nursing. Administrators tended to see women as temporary workers who were helping out in an emergency and would return to the home after the depression. Why teach them nondomestic skills they would never use again? Operating procedures in the Works Progress Administration mandated that job preference be given to male family heads, or, if none existed, to adult male children in the household.
Only if a husband were absent or disabled and no adult sons lived at home could women receive a high priority at the agency. Even in the National Youth Administration, men received preference over women in job placement. The WPA limited the proportion of jobs it opened to women to between 12 and 16 percent.
There were other limits to the New Deal programs. Social Security excluded domestic servants and agricultural workers, and by doing so excluded from its benefits most black female and Chicana workers. In the 1930s, 90 percent of black women worked in agricultural labor or domestic service. No code, and later, no minimum wage or maximum hours law covered these workers, either. Nor was government relief evenly distributed. It went disproportionately to whites. Black women in the South and Chicanas in the Southwest found themselves ousted from work relief programs so that they would have to take poorly paid domestic work or labor in the cotton or vegetable and fruit fields.
…Other programs not particularly aimed at women could also have unexpected results. The Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 aimed to give Native American tribes increased autonomy by creating tribal governments built around newly written constitutions. Although the underlying sentiment of the act was a new respect for tribal cultures, the new constitutions tended to be built on white models. In tribes where women had been excluded from formal political participation, they gained new voting power, and new women leaders emerged.
On the other hand, in some other tribes, women lost economic rights and political power, as they did among the Iroquois, where women had had the power as a group to depose chiefs and influence tribal decisions. Moreover, among the Navajo, New Deal policies of reducing stock in the name of conserving overgrazed land lessened the economic power of women, who were the traditional tribal stock owners. At the same time, jobs programs favoring men made the Navajo men less dependent economically on the clan’s women and less willing to contribute their income to the extended family.
…With the tremendous anxiety over social stability, and fears for the family as the institution at the core of social order, few spoke for the women workers, and feminist individualism was rarely seen. In 1935, the New York Herald Tribune reported that the president of the national League of Women Voters, the organizational heir to the suffrage movement, was defining a “1935 new-style feminism.” This new feminism, she insisted, did not demand that women disappear into their kitchens. Instead, it required “women making good in positions of responsibility, other women backing them up, and all preparing themselves for similar service,” as they did in Roosevelt’s administration. Yet the new focus was less on personal achievement than it had been in the 1920s. Women social reformers had achieved high visibility and power with the New Deal, and those focusing instead on equal rights for women were in disarray.
The social reformers saw themselves as bettering the world for women, helping women and children fend off economic disaster, fostering the success of women in government positions, and safeguarding the welfare of working women. But in Frances Perkins’s Department of Labor, the Children’s Bureau expanded rapidly, while the Women’s Bureau remained small. That policy decision left childless women stranded and left little room for a notion of women’s rights that did not depend on their family roles. Despite its powerful women, the New Deal did not revolutionize the position of women in relation to men or the family.”
- Sarah Jane Deutsch, “Women and the New Deal.” in From Ballots to Breadlines: American Women, 1920-1940
