his breath shudders out of him,  eyes closed against the weight of those words spoken in so gentle a tone.  it is much,  so much,  even too much sometimes;  this heart that he holds in his hand once belonging to one of ishgard’s greatest foes   ━  a being he had despised once heart and soul,  for all the suffering he’d caused,  for all the pain he’d put them through.  for shackling himself to estinien’s very soul in an act of pure,  selfish vengeance  ━ a possession unwanted and unasked for.  

out of all three of them,  haurchefant knows he took the longest to accept the fact that nidhogg was here to stay;  even longer to accept that estinien had come to love him,  without force or guile,  without influencing or manipulating estinien’s heart through that bond.  he knows he has caused all of them pain with his stubbornness to come to terms with so big a change,  in refusing to ease up even after aymeric had thawed t’ wards nidhogg’s presence in their lives. 

and yet he will not apologize,  for ‘tis through this adversity and this struggle they have come to where they are now  ━ nidhogg having fought his way into haurchefant’s heart despite it all,  the affection he feels threatening to consume him no longer there simply for the sake of his husbands.  and still this confession,  the immutable truth that such feeling is reciprocated hits him like a punch to the gut.  

eyes open to meet the other’s, red clashed with blue, and he lifts his hand to fit it,  tender and gentle,  against the curve of a cheek; fingers fanned around his horns.  “ i hope you know us past the fear of hurting one another.  if i’ve got you in my hands,  ‘tis only for them to keep you safe. “
