Fleabag, a Feminist Icon
I love the show fleabag with all my heart, it is an amazing piece of television which makes me feel so many emotions. I spent a lot of time pondering how this piece of art is involved/impacts/advocates for feminism and want to share my thoughts.
⁍ The use of breaking the fourth wall was a very poignant technique. It served as a commentary on the agency and autonomy of the female voice. Fleabag's direct engagement with the audience, while offering a deeper insight on the characters feelings thought and emotions, challenges the typical passive role female characters are given within story telling as she is an obviously active participant in HER narrative. ⁍ The show tackles often taboo subjects such as sex, a topic women have been shamed for talking about or indulging in for decades. Fleabag's unapologetic approach of her own desires and refusal to succumb to societal norms go against the stereotypical representation of women in television. Her sexual autonomy is a crucial aspect of her character and is never demoralised or shamed for her choices and instead encouraged to navigate her journey through validation and empowerment. ⁍ Fleabag also delves into the intricacies of female relationships. It views them of less of "gossipy" and more of a strong powerful sisterhood which is unlike what is usually presented in television. The shows central focus is on Fleabags relationship with her sister, not a man. It beautifully acknowledges the ups and downs of woman and sisterhood and shows that women are deeper than what is at face value. ⁍ It offers a critical examination of societal expectations placed upon women by showing the brutality of the guilt, grief, and self-worth issues Fleabag has to deal with which many other women can relate to. The show dismantles the typical perfect, put-together woman ,whom we are far to familiar with through all sorts of media, and instead presents a protagonist who is flawed, messy and REAL. It is a refreshing departure of the one dimensional female characters we are typically forced to indulge in. ⁍ The character of Fleabag challenges traditional gender roles and expectations by rejecting the idea that her worth is defined by her relationships with men or how well she adheres to social norms. The show is about HER journey of SELF-discovery and SELF-empowerment. This enforces the fact that a woman's narrative does need to revolve around conforming to societal expectations.
The show is a ground-breaking representation of feminism in contemporary media. Through its innovative narrative, unapologetic exploration of female sexuality, and nuanced portrayal of female relationships, the show defies stereotypes and provides a platform for authentic, multifaceted female characters. I highly recommend anyone to watch the show as it was a breath of fresh air.

this is the only time i will ever speak about st on this blog, but the show should've centered around Kali & she should've been canonically sapphic.
(if you're in any way interested in what i actually mean, i suggest reading the tags. i tend to elaborate there more often than in actual posts- i'm trying to break the habit, but it's where we are rn.)
#stranger things#kali prasad#linnea berthelsen#b*lly weirdos dni he's racist & if you compare his trauma to the systemic abuse faced at the hands of the american government by a woc#im gonna gut you :) peace n love on planet earth#but for real it would've been so much more... inspired i guess is the right word to tackle the concept of these big government secrets whil#centering around a protagonist who is part of the groups that the united states has targetted with the most vitrol & tmm the most frequentl#-ly with that kind of shady shit. and to give her a chance to fight back & reclaim her agency & come to a place where she can feel safe how#-ever that may look. and the inital set up for both Kali & her possee (sp?) overall had so much room for character & relationship developme#-nt & growing up. like it very much could have functioned as the above AS WELL AS a coming of age story for people who are held back in#life by the trauma they have to work through first in order to be able to participate healthily and ‟wholly‟ ig you'd say#and it would have given them a chance to explore all their more nostalgic inspirations while feeling less derivative and almost same-y as#*it would be giving the perspective to someone who was not previously allowed to occupy those spaces due to structural racism in the film &#televison industries#and also she's punk and cool and what we know of the group's ideologies leaves room to explore some really interesting intersectional femin#ist/leftist & potentially even anarchofeminist themes which considering the human antagonists of the show. intrigues me very greatly#and also i think she's pretty and linnea berthelsen is a v talented actress who deserves far more credit- esp because she had like what? a#few hours tops to get Kali across to the audience? and she did THAT. legend#if anyone from the og cast has to show up it can be nancy investigating & they can have a rival to lovers arc where kali knocks nancy down#a few pegs causing nancy to reassess her perspective & have gil blyther + zuko levels of character growth before helping kali destroy the g#-overnment in the way most couples would get each other roses <3#*anyone other than jane

the older I get, the more the technological changes I've lived through as a millennial feel bizarre to me. we had computers in my primary school classroom; I first learned to type on a typewriter. I had a cellphone as a teenager, but still needed a physical train timetable. my parents listened to LP records when I was growing up; meanwhile, my childhood cassette tape collection became a CD collection, until I started downloading mp3s on kazaa over our 56k modem internet connection to play in winamp on my desktop computer, and now my laptop doesn't even have a disc tray. I used to save my word documents on floppy discs. I grew up using the rotary phone at my grandparents' house and our wall-connected landline; my mother's first cellphone was so big, we called it The Brick. I once took my desktop computer - monitor, tower and all - on the train to attend a LAN party at a friend's house where we had to connect to the internet with physical cables to play together, and where one friend's massive CRT monitor wouldn't fit on any available table. as kids, we used to make concertina caterpillars in class with the punctured and perforated paper strips that were left over whenever anything was printed on the room's dot matrix printer, which was outdated by the time I was in high school. VHS tapes became DVDs, and you could still rent both at the local video store when I was first married, but those shops all died out within the next six years. my facebook account predates the iphone camera - I used to carry around a separate digital camera and manually upload photos to the computer in order to post them; there are rolls of undeveloped film from my childhood still in envelopes from the chemist's in my childhood photo albums. I have a photo album from my wedding, but no physical albums of my child; by then, we were all posting online, and now that's a decade's worth of pictures I'd have to sort through manually in order to create one. there are video games I tell my son about but can't ever show him because the consoles they used to run on are all obsolete and the games were never remastered for the new ones that don't have the requisite backwards compatibility. I used to have a walkman for car trips as a kid; then I had a discman and a plastic hardshell case of CDs to carry around as a teenager; later, a friend gave my husband and I engraved matching ipods as a wedding present, and we used them both until they stopped working; now they're obsolete. today I texted my mother, who was born in 1950, a tiktok upload of an instructional video for girls from 1956 on how to look after their hair and nails and fold their clothes. my father was born four years after the invention of colour televison; he worked in radio and print journalism, and in the years before his health declined, even though he logically understood that newspapers existed online, he would clip out articles from the physical paper, put them in an envelope and mail them to me overseas if he wanted me to read them. and now I hold the world in a glass-faced rectangle, and I have access to everything and ownership of nothing, and everything I write online can potentially be wiped out at the drop of a hat by the ego of an idiot manchild billionaire. as a child, I wore a watch, but like most of my generation, I stopped when cellphones started telling us the time and they became redundant. now, my son wears a smartwatch so we can call him home from playing in the neighbourhood park, and there's a tanline on his wrist ike the one I haven't had since the age of fifteen. and I wonder: what will 2030 look like?

So, were reading the gospels in my new testament class and I was very excited that there were two named after two of my favorite characters from the following. Sadly, I didn't see much either of them in the gospels. But I did find something interesting.
Both gospels tell the same stories with slight differences, which makes sense with them being similar twins though having distinct personalities. The gospel of Mark was written before Luke, despite in the show Luke being the older twin. Maybe these names were random (I don't believe that but I'd be remiss to not consider it). Mark's gospel is shorter and to the point while Luke's is longer and had more detail while in the show Luke dies and we get to see Mark develop for another season.
In the gospel of Mark he naively took in his first apostols while in Luke he had to work for it, which parallels how he takes in his followers in season three despite how untrustworthy they all turned out to be. In Luke it's said the followers should not bring a staff but their instructed for just that in Mark, which has another in show parallel since Luke in the show is kidnaped and still takes on the FBI with nothing while I can't remember Mark ever fully being without a weapon. Interestingly, in Mark when they go to Jesus's tomb there's one man while in Luke there's two, perhaps a hint to the eventual fate of Mark being left alone in the show. In Mark when there told about Jesus's fate post crucifiction, they tell no one while in Luke (and the other 2) they tell everyone. Another hint maybe, since Mark ends up all alone with no one to even confide his final revenge plan in.

I love this Kdrama so much!
When I tell you I gasped so hard the first time I saw this man on my screen while watching this Kdrama...This man is so UGH!! Sure, he plays the shittiest character in the show, but come on! He's so hot! I couldn't focus the entire time he was on the screen. I recommend this Kdrama called "My Name". It has a very profound plot, and the main lead is a badass female! I love that! She goes through so much as an individual, but she never let it get to her! I recommend this to anyone who loves dark drama/crime Kdramas, or dramas in general! It is sooo good! I rate it a solid 10/10. (Unbiased). It's on Netflix, and it has 8 episodes that span from 40 minutes to an hour.

I have got to say something everyone.
I have never seen a single episode of Riverdale. To be honest, i really regret never getting into it because it seems like a HILARIOUS media experience.
But thats beside the point. I've never fucking seen it a single episode. I've never even watched the memes of it and yet......
..... When I saw that clip of the 4 main characters being confirmed as a canonical quad poly relationship.....jesus christ guys. That felt fucking revolutionary. I have NEVER seen a relationship in media referred to that way without it being a fucking joke. And EVEN THEN, i rarely even SEE THE JOKES because most writers just dont seem to know what it is or its so taboo that it cannot ever be acknowledged.
So to have this fairly popular show actually acknowledge and canonize and DISCUSS that fucking concept???? I dunno man! It just !!! It feels like a huge step in the right direction for queer rep in media. It felt so fucking cathartic to see.
And I KNOW Riverdale is meant to be the CRAZY BIZARRE WEIRDO SHOW WHERE NOTHING MATTERS AND ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!!!!!! but like. That doesn't mean it isn't important or influential just because it comes from a silly or strange place. A lot of queer representation and expression STARTS in places like that. Back in the 70's thousands of trans people saw themselves for the first time in a CRAZY BIZARRE WEIRDO MOVIE called Rocky Horror and it changed their lives. So like. Yeah. Riverdale is fucking ridiculous and maybe those characters arent meant to be taken too seriously and maybe they break up and maybe it isn't Prestige Fucking Televison.
But....fuck!!!! It's significant! Its real! It fucking MEANS SOMETHING to see those types of relationships portrayed !!!
So THANK YOU, Riverdale. Seriously. Even though i've never watched it, I just gotta say thank you for breaking that barrier.
