Adichie is Amazing.
I have been really fascinated with Chimamanda Adichie and her work since our discussions in class this past week. I decided to look more into Adichie’s pieces and to see what other things I could find that stuck out to me. Obviously, when I searched up her name a wide range of things, too many to count, came up. Then I proceeded to look to see if Adichie had presented any other TED Talks other than The Danger of a Single Story and I was happy to see that she had!
In 2012, three years after her previous TED Talk, Adichie presented “We should all be feminists” at TEDxEuston. The video on the TED website alone has over a million views and the tagline reads, “We teach girls that they can have ambition, but not too much ... to be successful, but not too successful, or they'll threaten men, says author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. In this classic talk that started a worldwide conversation about feminism, Adichie asks that we begin to dream about and plan for a different, fairer world -- of happier men and women who are truer to themselves.” Even the short description just absolutely blew my mind away. We have previously discussed how Adichie is an extremely talented storyteller; I think that when she speaks things out to where the listener/viewer can hear what she is enunciating and how she expresses the different parts of her story it only enhances her talent.
Additionally, this TED Talk heightens the idea of intersectionality and how impactful this is to upbringing which is another one of our class topics.

If you feel inspired to learn more about ecology, animal welfare, indigenous justice, etc from the Avatar franchise, here are some books, groups, and videos that I recommend! (US-centric, please reblog with international resources if you know of them!)
BOOKS
The Lagoon: Encounters With The Whales of San Ignacio by James Michael Dorsey
Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Vitamin N: 500 Ways to Enrich the Health & Happiness of Your Family & Community by Richard Louv
GROUPS
The Saint Kateri Conservation Center, a Catholic ecological organization and land trust with board members ranging from ecologists to Indigenous peoples. They focus on educating and supporting people both practically and spiritually in letting their lawns grow wild and native in safe, sustainable ways.
Cultural Survival focuses on protecting Indigenous peoples whose communities foster a majority of the wildlife on the planet.
The Nature Conservancy is US-based and they have groups all over the nation.
VIDEOS:
Indigenous Issues with AVATAR | RANT by Native Media Theory (note: the guy isn’t saying you should avoid or hate on the franchise lol, he just wants to share problems that he feels are important to address and improve on)
Native America | PBS playlist
Australian Aboriginal Documentary playlist
How indigenous wisdom can build home-grown economies | Charles Dhewa | TEDxEuston great intro to the need for respecting local cultural practices to empower their economy
The Kitten Lady is a youtube channel but has sooo much great info for managing feral animal populations and strays in a way that is dignified and effective.

The Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie makes a surprise appearance on Beyoncé's latest album, released on iTunes this morning, declaiming: "We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls 'You can have ambition, but not too much'."
The novelist's intervention comes during the track ***Flawless, appearing as a series of samples from her impassioned TEDxEuston talk, "We should all be feminists".
During the speech, the Orange prize-winning author argues that differing expectations of men and women damage economic and social prospects in Nigeria, and more generally around Africa and the world.
Beyoncé has been particularly inspired by sections where Adichie explores attitudes towards marriage, sampling a passage where the novelist talks directly about aspirations.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This is a song called “***Flawless” by Beyonce. This is the first time Beyonce get’s a little raunchy with her song lyrics like “This my sh*t, Bow down bi@#hes” & “You dreamt of being I'm may world”.
Too many this song can be interpreted in different angles, some people say it’s a song about female empowerment by breaking social norms and telling men to bow down to women. Some think it’s about being the voice of women, saying that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ and that everyone is “I woke up like this, Flawless” in their own way.
This is also the first song Beyonce came out publicly that she is a feminist. She included an excerpt of Chimamada Ngozi Adiche speech during her TEDxEuston discussion.

“We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, ‘You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you will threaten the man’
Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don't teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors — not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are.
Feminist: the person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.”
— Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie at TEDxEuston “We should all be feminists.”
