book!Aragorn is much more fun if you embrace him and enjoy him as the diva princess; who, despite being a hero of Man and the one true king, somehow still manages to have a way too good opinion of himself, that he is.
For a guy with such an impressive track record, it'd be quite a feat to be too full of himself, to give himself too much credit, but book!Aragorn manages it.
This is a PSA: brought to you by Hama the Door Warden.

Modern fantasy writers are like
"I want to tackle themes such as misogyny or clssism or racism or homophobia in my work!🤗🤗🤗 No there's none of that present in my book, this society that mimics 1300s central Europe suffers from none of these issues because thats not progressive and if we have DRAGONS and MAGIC why do we need this ahaha am I right? 😅🙂‍↕️Except for this individual conflict in this novel the characters have to overcome but that's an isolated case. Oh look there's a Queen!"

i can't stop thinking about the evans sisters. their girlhood, their sisterly envy and bittersweet relationship, their loves and losses, their tragic ending

I know it's tempting to think that if Game of Thrones was released today that HBO would encourage the same "choose your favourite war criminal" discourse by gutting the characterization for the "misunderstood" Lannisters and disregarding the actual themes of the source material in favour of trying to twist GRRM's critiques of the great man view of history and the underlying anti-war sentiment into a full on (but not fleshed out) theme about how "everyone is in the wrong."
But they wouldn't. And you know exactly why they wouldn't.

Women, amiright fellas?
[First image ID: a set of three comic panels from an episode of the Moomin comic strip titled Moomin and the Circus. They are of Moominpappa sitting in a hammock and Moominmamma picking berries from a bush whilst having a conversation.
In the first panel, Moominpappa says: "I have a plan, Moominmamma. Now all women are illogical, aren't they?"
Then Moominmamma says: "Well, dear..."
In the second panel, Moominpappa says: "So I'll just show them how illogical they are about animals and they'll have to..."
In the third panel, Moominpappa continues; "... Dissolve the Moominvalley S.P.C.A!"
Then Moominmamma replies: "I don't think you really know women, dear."
End ID.]
[Second image ID: the "I've connected the dots" meme with Moominpappa and Moominmamma's names pasted over the two respective guys in the picture.
The first guy, who is meant to be Moominpappa, says: "I've connected the two dots"
The second guy, who is meant to be Moominmamma, says: "You didn't connect shit"
The first guy says again: "I've connected them"
End ID.]

I think terfs are a really good example of the whole "far right people can believe seemingly contradictory things without a shred of self-awareness" given that they simultaneously believe women are inherently better than men AND that it's absolutely 100% impossible for a woman to beat a man in any competition at all bcs apparently we just naturally suck at everything.

For the banter ask: 3 12 17 and 27
helloo thanks for the ask!! [prompt list]
Tumblr media
3. Directing them to attack/move in combat
“They will learn to fear us.”
“None will stop me.”
“One strike, one kill.”
12. Encountering a locked chest/door
“World’s biggest invitation: a lock.”
“Step aside. I can get that open.”
“Now I’m curious…”
17. Looking in a mirror
“Still alive, huh?” <a/n: dry, bitter at the fact>
“I see my mother, sometimes. Glad that old witch is dead.”
“Could do with another earring…”
27. Party banter with Wyll
W: “Last night was delightful. Where did you learn to dance so well?”
S: “I was a noble in Menzoberranzan. We dance in social affairs, when we are not busy poisoning each other.”
W: -laughs- “Ah, our Sol with her hair all done up, swaying on the dance floor in an elegant dress. You must have been quite the sight. I must take you dancing, when all this is done.”
S: “Only if you dress up as well.”
W: “For you, my lady? Only the best I have to offer.”

i love ekko so much ;-; vander too. it truly is amazing how when i get shows that actually have a good ratio of female characters AND they get treated like people, the barrier that keeps me from giving a fuck about fictional dudes just dissolves.
#arcane tag#there is also maybe something to be said about more effort going into male characters rather than the... occasional assumption that#audiences will just automatically care if a guy is put in front of us#spartacus was a similar show where... maybe not a great gender ratio going on and it had time-relevant sexism but#the writing was there! i cared so much about so many of the guys bc the girls weren't my only fucking refuge lmao#similar situation with xena... maybe having so many showrunner and writer and actor overlaps w spartacus made the execution similar#it is also nice to get a break from modern society tm which is additionally helpful especially in scifi#that actually understands there's no real reason for future or alternate worlds to have the same discrimination we do#at least i cant remember arcane doing much with gender or racial discrimination#on that note i also notice that tumblr's insistence in the past that if ur white u cannot like... find black ppl attractive without it bein#fetishization or you have to put 100000% effort into engaging with these characters to prevent accidentally doing a racism#i get where that was all coming from but i think that does cause a slight barrier for me with non-white characters at times where im like.#am i.... allowed to like this character???? just as a residual mindset from those days - ridiculous as it is to that extent#so something with ambessa for example (or even like... mira in terra nova!)#is it is easier for me to latch onto them with still consideration from our world and our biases but it feels like there's#less pressure to walk on eggshells about it when understanding her within the context of her world ig?#anyway. alternate universe episode over. it is amazing how much seeing what could have been destroys me more than what is

billions also comedy gold presenting winston as a scapegoat for abuse culture fans when it's like but hey it can't be actual scapegoating if you Enjoy It or consider it Justified or experience Reassurance from Its Opportunity For A Group Cohesion Substitute For A Cohesion Based On An Inherent Equal Degree Of Belonging, The Absence Of Which Allows For, Encourages, Reinforces, & Rewards Scapegoating
it can't be Bullying if someone's Weird or you Just Don't Personally Like Them or Nobody's Actually Stopping You, Maybe At Least If They Don't See Too Much Of It, Maybe Others Are Supporting It
it can't be Abuse if you're just doing things Normally or are Following Rules or Aren't Feeling Malicious And Aren't Getting Divine Revelations Otherwise and probably it's just that a lot of abnormal people are being whiny &/or unfair &/or the Real malicious ones. kinda just like how that scapegoat is the real person ruining everything and really just forcing you to treat them like this
#might note hardly limited to billions; the series doing bog standard suffocatingly common [Being Normal can't be abusive] replication#nor is their Unaware Replication Of [it can't be ableist if i'm not reacting to ppl who walked up & said Hi I'm Autistic]#well abuse & traumatic treatment can't be Everywhere. like how umm sexism can't be everywhere. neither can white supremacy. ableism. cmon.#oh please not everything can be political. Just Be Normal. which makes it ''apolitical.''#now we all agree abuse can't ever be made palatable; insulated; easy. now ppl doing it never said it wasn't That bad.#if they did they must have been maliciously lying. whereas when i say it can't have been That bad; i mean it :)#and if that person says it was; well they must be lying. or clueless. or a pussy. or scheming to destroy me. Must be. Gotta#& we wouldn't be able to look around & see contexts of imbalance. who's vulnerable. who's life gets smaller. who's supported automatically#who's supported if someone even posits they May have done anything like No; Impossible; now instantly definitely get their ass#you can just go on all day about the ''um i'm just the Realistic Normality vessel'' arguments made boundlessly in bad faith#being like ohh Everyday Interactions / ''Normal'' Semi/Public Situations Can't Be Uncomfortable Imbalanced Dangerous Abusive....#if they are that must be So Rare & created only by Rare Bad Actors with Malicious Mens Rea (itself a great concept to make any act Okay)#something framed as Extreme must be an outlier. could never be part of everyone's everyday life & some much more than others.#could never be what's defined as Normal (associated with Superiority) like how Abuse can't be shit i'd think of as Normal#like how damn if ya don't just wanna kill the autistic coworker and everyone agrees & would clap & cheer if you did And That's Great#you'd have to feel Weird / Abnormal about it! b/c Weirdness & Abnormality is what's bad!#like the autism or the cptsd (the Real abuse can only be: inflicting the existence of a victim's survival skills on Superior Normals)#or whatever else gets pathologized with Polite ABA arguments about how it's not ''social skills'' so hide it or suffer the consequences#winston billions#having that perspective too like oh [our blessed successful conformity] [their barbaric xyz Issues]#if the best you can argue for or against smthing is as Normal or Weird respectively like. no. what's behind that door#the authority figure/s who must be supported lest this all crumble. vs the ruinerrrrrr#billions recognizing winston & tuk the next most shitted on would probably get along & have a mutually supportive friendship#billions also recognizing that mutual support better not be Allowed to get that far. lest this all crumble#like look see we Knew it. we knew the bottom tier ppl who don't really belong in the group who we bully & scapegoat are Always Ruining It.

This is your reminder that ambiguity in a (competently written) story functions to force the reader or viewer to engage on a thematic level, rather than a literal plot level. In other words, you don't "answer" ambiguity with conspiracy-grade theories born and "proven" through easter egg hunts and counting breadcrumbs. The thematic answer, the message of the ambiguous part of the story, should fit regardless of whichever of the likely possible "answers" is the "true answer." Because in cases of ambiguity, the thematic answer is the "true answer."
Do with that what you will.

one of the biggest ironies in india is how we say ideas like feminism and lgbtq community is western, when in reality, it is our patriarchal ideas and homophobia that is western

#shoving this at every TLOU stan who still think joel is a hero#dude was fucked up and so were ellie and abby and that's the POINT (tags by deanpinterester and THANK YOU I was about to reblog this with this because ‘Or they argue that the collateral damage didn’t really happen, or that the negative outcomes weren’t really that bad actually, and thus miss the point altogether. ‘ is literally describing what the fandom did for yeaaaaars. And it’s why TLOU 2 got so bashed on, it didn’t validate their entirely made up headcanon about how Joel did the unquestionably right thing, and instead followed the narrative it created in a completely sensible way and explored how wrong and fucked up it was. Joel is so fucking awful.)
People think "gray morality" in fiction is about Both Sides Are Partly Right Actually but so much more often it's about choices having inescapable negative outcomes that have to be weighed against the benefits, or it's about having to choose between a series of bad options, or it's about making hard decisions about what you are willing to sacrifice to achieve the outcome you believe is good.
So often, I seem to see people angry that a story in a video game didn't present a Good Option with no collateral damage and no negative outcomes whatsoever, and if there are any downsides it's seen as the writers punishing you for the decision, because they see the primary purpose of stories to be moralizing rather than exploring the complexities of human experience. Or they argue that the collateral damage didn't really happen, or that the negative outcomes weren't really that bad actually, and thus miss the point altogether.
And I feel like it's important to remember that a narrative telling you a decision is difficult is not the same thing as the narrative telling you it is wrong.
