Stop Making Sense: the birth and resurrection of a monster in Biddeford
Over the just the past few days, two journalists have reached out to me in order to criticize some things I’ve said on social media. Ted Cohen, a former and respected reporter from the Portland Press Herald, and Ed Pierce, now the editor of the weekly Windham Eagle, both think I need some guidance. Cohen was sincere and well-meaning with his criticism. We’ve known each other for more than 25…

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone hasn't already seen it. It's a TED talk about art and creativity that Taika did back in 2010 after Boy was released and it's one of my favorite videos to watch because it really does inspire me to get creative, plus it never fails to make me laugh because Taika is in peak comedic form here-showcasing his typical dry/goofy sense of humor. Also want to point out that he apparently has loved the name Jeff and/or Jeffrey for years.

I'm not really a "fan" (a term I don't much like) of Ezra Klein or his brand of liberalism which often irritates my own Leftist sensibilities. There's something about particular "intellectuals" whose personalities just annoy me and he's one of them. With that said, there are moments when the subject matter and the guest are interesting enough to get me to tolerate Klein and actually listen to his podcast. This episode was one of those rare moments. Klein here is talking to journalist Rhaina Cohen about her book, "The Other Significant Others: Reimagining Life With Friendship at the Center" (which, I think, began with articles she wrote for the Atlantic like, "What If Friendship, Not Marriage, Was at the Center of Life?" from 2020) (here's Cohen's short TED Talk on this) The central premise of Cohen's work is an attempt to examine our relationships and get us to expand on, and reimagine, how they are composed (even outside of concepts like polyamory which, again, often centers sexual relationships which is not the focus here). Namely, what if we placed more weight on the importance of our friendships rather than our romantic entanglements? As Cohen says, we treat friendships as if they were "peripheral...fungible...dispensable" rather than recognizing the importance of friendships to our own sense of self, our own physical and psychological health and the deep connections that some friendships entail but are devalued by our culture (which really doesn't have the language, legal nor colloquial, to properly recognize intense, platonic entanglements). It's an interesting discussion that I'm suggesting you give a listen to.

As a self-proclaimed mostly straight white dude,
I hope that mostly got a bit of a workout at the SAG Award Ambassadors Dinner honouring Phil and his fellow ambassador Taylor Zakhar Perez.
Phil, I know dark, hairy dudes are your weakness. I fully understand.
And you spent time with your SURFACE costar Oliver Jackson-Cohen? Lucky duck!
"Throuple?" Taylor, count me in.
Philip, you've not even seen his full power because he's clean shaven. With facial hair?
He's not just good-looking, he's quick on his feet. This answer to an interview he did for THE KISSING BOOTH 2 made me, a very private person, proud.
It's the truth! You are not dating if you're already married/engaged. Interviewers gotta get smart on how they phrase their questions.
-Now we just need Taylor to get to work.

so how are we feeling about the song choice during the trent finds out about colin scene? i mean there's the very obvious meaning of the title "everybody knows" but it's also such a pessimistic song with this "everything just always goes to shit" / "been there done that" vibe and maybe i'm wearing my clown make-up but that combined with the look on trent's face as he walks away makes it seem like he doesn't only know that this is serious but that he *knows* on a very personal level
#ted lasso#trent crimm#i need this man to be queer for personal reasons and it's all coming together#also i'm just always here for a sad cohen song damn that shit hits different

It's the solstice tonight, and a good time to reflect on my favourite books from the past year.
I'm making very little attempt to rank these titles. They're simply the books that I enjoyed most, and they're presented in the order I read them. • "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet," by Becky Chambers (2014) • "The Galaxy, and the Ground Within," by Becky Chambers (2021) • "Locklands," by Robert Jackson Bennett (2022) • "Beloved," by Toni Morrison (1987) • "Exhalation," by Ted Chiang (2019) • "Fugitive Telemetry," by Martha Wells (2021) • "Becoming Kin: An Indigenous Call to Unforgetting the Past and Reimagining Our Future," by Patty Krawec (2022) • "The Vanished Birds," by Simon Jimenez (2020) • "The Netanyahus: An Account of a Minor and Ultimately Even Negligible Episode in the History of a Very Famous Family," by Joshua Cohen (2021) • "Utopia Avenue," by by David Mitchell (2020) • "The Calcutta Chromosome: A Novel of Fevers, Delirium & Discovery," by Amitav Ghosh (1995) • "Moon of the Crusted Snow," by Waubgeshig Rice (2018) • "Bea Wolf," by Zach Weinersmith; illustrated by Boulet (2023) • "Fighting the Moon," by Julie McGalliard (2021) • "The Empress of Salt and Fortune," by Nghi Vo (2020) • "The Glass Hotel," by Emily St. John Mandel (2020) • "New York 2140," by Kim Stanley Robinson (2017) • "When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain," by Nghi Vo (2020) • "The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Omnibus," by Ryan North et al; illustrated by Erica Henderson & Derek Charm & Jacob Chabot & Naomi Franquiz & Tom Fowler & Rico Renzi et al (2022) • "Buffalo Is the New Buffalo: Stories," by Chelsea Vowel (2022) • "Greenwood: A Novel," by Michael Christie (2019) • "The House of Rust," by Khadija Abdalla Bajaber (2021) • "Children of Memory," by Adrian Tchaikovsky (2022) • "Jade Legacy," by Fonda Lee (2021) • "A Deadly Education: A Novel: Lesson One of the Scholomance," by Naomi Novik (2020) • "The Last Graduate: A Novel: Lesson Two of the Scholomance," by Naomi Novik (2021) • "The Golden Enclaves: Lesson Three of the Scholomance," by Naomi Novik (2022) • "To Be Taught if Fortunate," by Becky Chambers (2019) • "Helgoland: Making Sense of the Quantum Revolution," by Carlo Rovelli (2020), translated by Erica Segre & Simon Carnell (2021) • "A Psalm for the Wild-Built," by Becky Chambers (2021) Ah, but I said I'd make "very little attempt" to rank them, not "no attempt." So here is that attempt: my favourite five books from the last solar orbit — the five I enjoyed even more than those other thirty — also presented in the order I read them.
• "Nona the Ninth," by Tamsyn Muir (2022) • "Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands," by Kate Beaton (2022) • "Record of a Spaceborn Few," by Becky Chambers (2018) • "Briar Rose," by Jane Yolen (1992) • "Babel, or, The Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution," by R.F. Kuang (2022)
