Deeper dive into Design Thinking tool box In 2018, #StandardCharteredBank run multiple #LUMA system course. This is was a 3 day deep dive on Human centered Design framework: trainees discovered, explored and practiced the Luma Toolset such as:

Interviewing, Walk-a-Mile immersion, Stakeholder Mapping, Experience Diagramming, Creative Matrix, Buy a Feature, Build your own, Concept Poster... so many interesting and practical methods that can and should be used at work.

Last week, my colleagues and I at TCB have enjoyed the Advanced Design Thinking training lead by Doodledesign.

After a first 2 days virtual training during Covid period in 2022, we could eventually enjoy a face to face session. Chris is and his team are awesome facilitators, this 2 days were very smooth and practical. Design Thinking offer a deep range of tools but we really focused on practicing few technics:

Of course we first reviewed the #DoubleDiamondofDesign, where these techniques are key tools of the journey from the Problem Space to the Solution Space.

We also had the opportunity to review the key design thinking facilitator attributes, where each trainee reflected on their strength and weakness.

My key reflection by the end of these 2 days are the following:

What is in for me as a Trainee? • Which of the tools can I really use as transformation leader and Agile Coach? • Which tool dare to practice in real situation with our challenging stakeholders?

What is in for me as Facilitator? • What can I learn from Chris? • What are the Facilitations skills I can grow? • What are the tools, the wordings, the games I can adapt to our Coaching context in order to make our “clients” fully engaged.

Being myself a facilitator, having continuous coaching sessions, training every week our teams to embrace the Agile Mindset, attending this advanced Design Thinking training is a great opportunity to be in the trainees shoes, observe and learn! School, Sights, Sinuses, & Spinning

Week 2 Recap: Started classes, saw sights, sinus infection, and spin class

Happy Monday! Today is our day off of classes and I spent the day recapping my last week and prepping for the week ahead. 

Last week was our first week of classes! My architecture and design class is definitely my favorite so far, and it’s a really great way to explore Prague and learn more about my new home. We spent the first class talking about the structure of the class, where we learn about an area and then actually get to explore it! Day 1 was learning about Old Town while walking around the main square.

My other classes are EECS 496 (Tech, Ethics, and Public Policy), EECS 497 (Augmented Reality: Leadership Development in the Tech Sector), and Techcom 497 (Communication for Tech Sector). These classes are going to be super interesting, as my professors are from all over the world and will be able to give so many different perspectives on the tech sector. I’m glad I can still get EECS credit while being abroad - that’s one reason why this program is so amazing!

Our classes run in 3 hour increments, and depending on how many classes you’re taking, you can have only 1 class a day! Luckily, I only have 1 class everyday which leads to lots of time exploring Prague. This week, I went to check out the Prague Castle, which was so beautiful. I went around sunset time and it was practically empty, so we had the entire place to ourselves!

Unfortunately, all of the go-go-go of being abroad caught up with me and I got a sinus infection. Luckily, the health insurance and tele-doc service provided by Michigan was super easy to use. Someone called me and asked about my symptoms, and after a quick conversation, I received the antibiotics I needed! 3 days later, I’m feeling so much better and can use this Monday off to recharge before the week of school ahead.

Today, my roommate Caroline and I went to a spin class (the Czech version of SoulCycle). Luckily, it was in English (we had a rough experience with a yoga class in Czech earlier this week). Afterwards, we did our weekly grocery shopping. This experience is pretty different from grocery shopping in America. First of all, it’s significantly cheaper (at least compared to LA prices). We decided to try out one of the nicer grocery stores, and a week's worth of produce and snacks came out to around $35. Secondly, you have to bag your groceries - and FAST. There is absolutely no funny business happening here. They scan, and you bag as fast as you possibly can. You also have to pre-buy your bags, so you better hope everything fits! 

Next week abroad: 2nd week of classes, trying Czech sushi for the first time, and a trip to Italy!

Building, designing, refining and training the Agile delivery framework of the Bank!

By the end of December 2023, I am rewarded and listed among the few Agilists whom delivered more than a dozen of the immersive 1 day Agile foundational training within a year.

Actually it has been 3 years that the Agile center of excellence has been building, experimenting, improving, updating and eventually released the official Techcombank Agile way of working: the Techcomway. One thing which particularly helps while delivering the trainings or implementing the new way of working with new teams, is the deep and strong connection between the Agile Manifesto and the Techcombank’s core values :

Leveraging on core the values of the bank is a really strong message to each Techcomer in my opinion. This is re-enforcing the importance of the transformation teams by continuously reminding the need to embrace the bank's beliefs.

I need to precise that the adoption of Agile frameworks (during execution) has been officially embedded as a part of the Project life cycle of the bank since early 2021 already, under the initiative of our previous Head of Transformation Timothy Kyle; which was a significant step! It has drastically evolved since then.

Today, the result is a solid way of working based on Scrum framework, using at scale components (Chapters, Scrum of Scrums, Joint events, Community of Practices…) which helps to drive the delivery and reach the expected business outcomes. The journey wasn’t easy at all to be honest, however it is now being recognized and endorsed by each foundational part of the bank as an absolutely enabler when it comes to implementation. Also meaning we have yet tackled Agile for discovery phase of a new business case, this should probably be the next big thing to tackle…

As a part of the Strategy & Transformation division, the dedicated Agile workforce have collaborated closely with Retail Detail Bank (+Digital Office & Marketing initiative), DNA (Data), IT (including Cloud Migration initiative), Business Banking... Each of them have embraced the Agile way of working, under Project Management Office and Agile Center of Excellence strong guidance. Since early 2022 our agile playbook is mandatory framework measured by clear KPI when it comes to delivering a large initiative (successfully!!). Here are the major topics it is dealing with:

By the end of 2023, a Kanban based version has also been developed for specific initiatives, equipping Business As Usual teams with proper agile mindset and tools. We already leveraging on this and propagate the usage of it as we have we started the Agile Journey with several business department with no technology component involved: the technology part are just enablers to reach the outcome expected.

Longtime due, but for now we are focusing on building a deeper and more targeted training: a 3 days course, including, 1 full day Agile fundamental, 1 full day of simulation activities for Scrum and / or for Kanban; 1 day of “hands on” sessions with the internal tools and practices - absolutely needed for the current & future scrum masters. The main intent is to equip carefully selected candidates with new skills (which are not in their initial set of skills and experience).

Although it is collective effort, I am in charge of the design of the Scrum simulation, designing the serious games, the scenarios, the way to facilitate and enable the learning. For this exercise I need to collaborate with the pillars of our team :

A beautiful example of teamwork for a common objective! Can't wait to run it!

Note that this 3 days course is not an isolated training to equip seasonal scrum masters: these 3 days are just 1 component of the upskills program for existing teams member willing and qualified to become future scrum master, but let’s talk about this in another article!

Movin' in! Week 1, Praha 2

Week 1 In Prague is (almost) done! After arriving on Wednesday, I’ve had 5 days of getting accustomed to life here and preparing for classes, which start tomorrow. 

Moving into our apartment was pretty easy! Me and 3 friends are living on the 5th floor of a white building, which happens to be above a Mexican restaurant - HUGE plus. My room has a perfect view of the sunset and I spent the first night getting settled with that as my view. I’m in a neighborhood called Vinohrady, which means Vineyards in Czech. Prague is split up into 22 districts, and I am in Praha 2. It’s known for its colorful buildings and young & trendy cafes and restaurants, making it perfect for us. It’s also a 7 minute walk from the Gröbe Villa, where we have classes. 

I’m taking Essential Czech (a 1-credit course designed to help us learn a bit of Czech so we’re not completely lost), and have had that class everyday since we’ve arrived. It’s been really helpful, learning words like Ahoj, which means “Hi”, Ano, which means “Yes”, and Ne, which means “No”. Confusing, I know. Tomorrow, I start the rest of my classes - Architecture & Design in Prague, Techcom 497, EECS 496, and EECS 497. I had a preview of my Architecture and Design class on our walking tour, where we got to explore the Old Town and the important sights of Prague.

Some highlights included the National Museum, Old Town Square with the Astronomical Clock, and the Kafka head! 

Besides all of the sightseeing, I’ve been spending my free time finding my favorite grocery stores and any other necessities like a hair dryer and blankets. Overall, the first week here has been amazing! I’ve met up with my friends also studying here who are on a different program which was really comforting. Having familiar faces in a new place is always a nice way to go outside your comfort zone without going too far. I’ve been taking time alone to walk around and explore my new city, and I can’t wait to share with you what I do next!
