I don't know if you mentioned this before but your tier list makes me wanna ask which, if any, of the 3H cast were your unexpected faves? Like you either didn't expect much from them or they were the type of character you usually don't like but you ended up liking them?

Rhea.

I started with Golden Deer and the way the game frames The Church of Seiros and Rhea in White Clouds is almost cartoonishly shifty, coupled with Claude's overall mistrust of Rhea and the Church I was fully prepared for your average JRPG evil Church storyline.

I was surprised when that isn't what I got. I didn't see the Flame Emperor twist coming because quite frankly I wasn't paying attention, Edelgard had never caught my eyes as a character and I gave no second thought to her more suspicious behaviour first time around until the reveal.

After that getting Rhea fighting to protect the students at Garreg Mach, then later reveal about the truth of Crests, The Heroes Relics and The Church of Seiros I started to realise I had judged her too soon.

I played Crimson Flower after that and this was when I realised Rhea was a significantly more complex character than I'd originally given her credit for. Because I already knew her backstory from Wind I went into Flower and could see all of Rhea's PTSD triggers, Edelgard breaking into Sothis' Holy Tomb, Grave Robbing her families remains. Rhea was seeing a new Nemesis rising before her eyes and if that wasn't bad enough the child she saved by giving her mother's heart to them, the person who she thought was her mother just without her memories sides with the person desecrating her families resting place and plans to take The Sword of the Creator with them. You can see her progressively lose all rational as Flower goes on because she genuinely feels like she's back on Teltean Plains and Nemesis is leading his Bandit Army again.

By this point I was firmly in the #TeamRhea corner. I thought she was a fascinating character and sorely underappreciated. I thought she did what she felt had to be done to protect herself and her remaining families without throwing away her humanity completely (she is the only surviving Nabatean with a foot in each camp while Indech and Macuil are stuck in Dragon Form and Seteth and Flayn are unable to transform into their Dragon Forms anymore). She of course made mistakes, she's one woman who had never ran a religion before never mind one as large and mostly centralised like The Church of Seiros. However I don't buy into the whole thing about all of Fódlans problems stem from Rhea, if anything she put a bandaid over something that probably required a cast but she did what she could because she wasn't qualified to begin with but it was that or keep fighting after another 100 or so years.

So yeah. Rhea.

As for pleasant surprises in the cast that I didn't necessarily go on some long journey to the point of loving the way I did Rhea, but was mostly indifferent to but ended up liking a quite a bit, these would include the likes of Seteth, Ferdinand, Mercedes, Dimitri and Linhardt.
