I'm getting sick of a certain sect of the fandom trying to trivialize Rhea's trauma as "mommy issues". The woman not only had her mother, but almost her entire people/family get slaughtered and have their bones turned into weapons by a bunch of butthurt power hungry humans, and then had to live with lies in order to protect her last remaining people/family and not want any more bloodshed, said lies hid humanity's faults. Not to mention, there's something misogynistic about downplaying a woman's trauma as "mommy issues".

And the thing is, Rhea's "issues" actually manifest in pretty understandable ways! A lot of her political decisions really were born out of her being caught between two not-great options where she had to figure out which one was less not-great than the other. In the present, she's reluctant to dine in the company of the students and feels she doesn't belong, and she struggles to connect with people because she's had to bear the weight of keeping the Nabatean culture and people alive by herself for almost a thousand years without anyone knowing about it. She promulgated the Heroes' Relics as holy weapons because at least that way she could honor her people's memories. She wants Sothis back not just because she misses her mother, but because she truly believes it will set everything right, which isn't too far off from the average person who believes their parents can fix everything. Having layers like that is so much more interesting than just handwaving it all as "mommy issues".

i only say she could have been handled differently because like there's SO MUCH about the game that hinges on her and she's damselled in two routes, straight up nonexistent in a third, and cherami leigh's performance is the only redeeming quality in the fourth, which otherwise sucks shit. rhea has a genuinely surprising amount of internality and depth for a female character written by intsys, and the back half of the game does so little with it. she's a genocide survivor! her people were harvested for parts! her mom's spine gets used to kill people! what the FUCK! give her a hug and a blanket this instant!!!

Favorite headcanons of Rhealeth?

i don't have any for rhealeth as a romantic ship; i did S-support rhea on my last SS playthrough just to see what it was, but i see rhea and byleth's relationship as familial (and i only ship byleth with claude) so i don't have much on the romance front.

but i do have a special place in my heart for the idea that rhea survives VW but takes a long time to sleep and recover, and she wakes up to post-canon claudeleth and the deer working actively to do away with heroes' relics and lay them to rest. i like the thought of her blessing claude and byleth's marriage just before falling asleep, and then waking up to their children (maybe grown by now? maybe still in their teens?) following in their footsteps. i REALLY love the idea of byleth taking to wearing white lilies in rhea and sothis's honor, growing her green hair out and wearing it in a braid and looking uncannily like saint seiros.

and i think byleth asks rhea to tell her about the sothis she knew, adding on to the stories she's already heard from seteth and flayn, getting as much of a picture as she can of the goddess, and feels her heart break in a new way over what happened to sothis's children as she watches her own. i think rhea has to take some time to adjust to how the world has changed under claude and byleth's leadership, but she's also glad to see the land and the people in the best of hands.
