Bites and Comfort

“Fuck.” Kiba heard his sister mutter from the kitchen as he closed the door to his home. He perked an eyebrow as he and Akamaru followed the sound, hearing her hiss and metal clatter. When he found her at the kitchen table, she had a sewing needle in one hand and bandages scattered across. He crinkled his nose at the distinct smell of blood. She shot her eye up at him and frowned before looking back down at a wound in her arm, rolling her eyes. “What is this, the peanut gallery?”

“Good one.” Kiba snarked back, pulling up the seat next to her as he examined what seemed to be a bite. “One of the pups get you?”

“Yep.” She sighed, hand shaky as she tried to thread the needle.

“Shoulda gone to the hospital.” He remarked, reaching out to take the needle from her. “Here, idiot.” He easily threaded the needle and got to work on sewing up her wound. Hana sighed.

“Thanks, jerk…” She whispered, watching her brother patch her up. She wondered when he learned how to do these things so effortlessly. Was he actually paying attention when he watched her work with the animals? “How was your mission?”

“Not great…” He mumbled, frowning. She raised an eyebrow at him and he glanced up to meet her eye briefly before looking back down. “We couldn’t find what we were looking for. We came back because time expired.” He sighed as he tied off the thread, causing her to wince. “Just feel stupid, like it was my fault.”

“Why’s that?” Hana managed to squeak out through the pain as he dabbed an alcohol-soaked cotton ball on the newly sewn area.

“They masked the scent, I’m sure of it. It was my job to sniff it out and I couldn’t…” He looked away as he grabbed the tray of medical utensils, bringing them to the sink for her. She frowned at her brother’s attitude. He was being far nicer than usual, and far too calm for her comfort. “I’m the reason we failed.”

“That what your teammates said?” She questioned as she ran a fingertip over the newly patched area.

“Nah, ‘course not.” He shook his head. “They’d never admit it even if they thought it. Anyway, we always take the blame equally.”

“It’s what a good team does.” She nodded, staring up at the back of his head.

“Yeah, I guess.” He nodded as well, folding his arms as he turned back to her, leaning against the sink. She brought a finger to her chin as she searched her thoughts, hoping to figure out something to cheer him up, as a good big sister should. Then she brightened up.

“Hey, c’mon. Let’s go to Auntie’s house.” Kiba perked an eyebrow at the suggestion. “Teamaru just had her litter while you were gone. The pups are adorable, half white, half black!” She smiled as a grin spread over his face. They were suckers for puppies. Akamaru yipped approval and Kiba finally nodded, linking his arm with his taller sisters as they headed out.

so went to sleep at 4am but what’s new this is the new norm. overall, today was a long day but we pushed through and got to teamaru right before it closed. i got grapefruit green tea with mango boba and lychee jelly :DD now am going to take a shower and continue procrastinating. here’s to taking physics quizzes at 12am!! pls teach me about doppler effect D:
