Interview with Yahoo Japan ~Translation~
Source: https://news.yahoo.co.jp/byline/tanakahisakatsu/20180304-00082311/
Note: Here’s my translation of Kalafina’s recent interview with Yahoo Japan. It’s more personal than their typical interviews so I thought some of you might be interested. As always, take everything with a grain of salt, my Japanese is far from perfect. Let’s get right to it 〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→
These are Kalafina’s thoughts regarding their live on March 11 「We want to make this a powerful day all about conveying emotions, about receiving and treasuring each other’s feelings」
In 2011 we started our tour about two weeks after the earthquake. 「When we performed our song “Hikari no Senritsu” it suddenly seemed like a mental bond was formed, it felt like we were holding on to each other tightly, at that time I felt the great importance of music, how it has the power to connect people」 (Keiko)
―― On March 11 you will perform at 『Toyosu Music Collaboration Team Smile Tohoku Earthquake Reconstruction Support LIVE』which will be held at Toyosu PIT, what are your thoughts on ~Team Smile’s~ activities?
Wakana: We may not be able to fully comprehend what the victims of this disaster are going through but there’s one thing we can do, we can provide our music and that makes me happy. Those who love music will forever listen to it, those who dislike it may refrain from doing so. But one thing is certain, as long as we live, music will always exist in this world.
―― At that time in 2011 the three of you had been active for three years since your debut, was it a moment that made you once again aware of the importance and necessity of music and entertainment?
Keiko: Our tour was scheduled to start on March 27 in Osaka, about two weeks after the earthquake. Coverage of the affected areas was all over the news, everyone was worried. Lives and events were being cancelled and postponed one after the other, while thinking about what would be the best plan of action, we finally decided to donate the earnings of our tour. Among those attending our lives there were many victims of the earthquake as well as people who had not been directly affected by it, one way or another I think many of them felt a sense of guilt during the lives, they probably wondered if it would be all right to enjoy themselves. At these lives we sang “Hikari no Senritsu” for our encore, it’s about never losing hope, it’s about a melody descending from the sky, I think the lyrics of this song really struck a chord in everyone’s heart, it suddenly seemed like a mental bond was formed, like we were all holding on to each other tightly, at that time I felt the great importance of music, how it has the power to connect people. I think it took a lot of courage for us to decide to hold that tour but in the end we did not regret it, we were really happy we did. We have always seen our tours as a “journey of music” but amongst all of our journeys that particular tour was a turning point for us, even up to this day the three of us often find ourselves looking back on it, we consider it a profound memory.
「After the earthquake I thought a lot about what I could do in a situation like that, I came to the sad conclusion that there are not many things I could do to help others. At that time I came to terms with the fact that for me, the only way to reach out to people was through music」 (Hikaru)
Hikaru: That time was mentally challenging for me, on top of the Tohoku Earthquake I also found out that many junior students from my alma mater had become victims of the earthquake in New Zealand, during this period lots of things were going through my mind, I was questioning many things regarding my own life and its meaning. I thought a lot about what I could do in a situation like that, I came to the sad conclusion that there are not many things I could do to help others. That’s when we decided that Kalafina would hold the tour, with all my power I wanted to do these lives because concerts are my way of communicating with others through music. At that time I came to terms with the fact that for me, the only way to reach out to people was through that music. “Team Smile” is made up of people who share that same sentiment, they are doing many lives and various other activities so I am truly honoured to be able to take part in one of these events.
「Spreading music. No matter at which live, I want to sing with as much care as possible, I want to reach people’s hearts. I am happy if that can provide support for anyone」(Wakana)
「Holding this live on March 11 is very meaningful because people carrying all kinds of baggage will come to experience our music」(Keiko)
―― Will the live on that day feel different than other Kalafina concerts?
Wakana: The three of us always want to convey our music in the same way regardless of the venue, that has also been on our minds whenever we got the chance to perform abroad. We always wanted to convey our music even when we couldn’t communicate through a common language. Whether it was in France, in the US or in China, people sang together with us, even though all our lyrics are in Japanese. When I heard that, I realised that we could really reach out to people through our music, it made me feel really confident. That’s why no matter at which live, I want to sing with as much care as possible, I want to reach people’s hearts. Before each and every one of our lives we always stand behind the stage and promise each other to do that. We keep singing our songs with this thought in mind and it would make me incredibly happy if by doing that we can provide some sort of support for anyone.
Keiko: It really is a great thing to hold a live on March 11, I feel like those who come to the concert will treasure the memories of that day. Some people don’t want to be reminded of what happened on that day, others never want to forget that day. Holding this live on March 11 is very meaningful because people carrying all kinds of baggage will come to experience our music.
―― That day another live will be held at Sendai PIT and there will be a live viewing at Kamaishi PIT, it feels like these three venues are collectively reaching out to the areas struck by the disaster.
Keiko: Every year around this time the media is filled with coverage regarding the earthquake, there are lots of people who come up with refreshing ideas in order to not have this disaster fall into oblivion. I think it’s absolutely amazing that we get the chance to take part in all of this.
「All the participating artists of 『Toyosu Music Collaboration』 will be choosing songs that carry a certain meaning, that convey feelings fitting that particular day」(Keiko)
―― At this LIVE artists from the same talent agency are coming together to perform, you held a similar event in the past called “MUSIC ENERGY”, I wonder, are these kinds of events more enjoyable than others?
Hikaru: All of us are usually active in so many different places, there really are not a lot of opportunities for events like this so it’s really nice and a lot of fun to have all of us come together to create this one special thing.
Wakana: At “Music Energy” I was very nervous about our collaborations with everyone but in the end I had a lot of fun. This time around I am looking forward to being able to attentively listen to everyone’s performance. We also have some amazing band members so I can’t wait to hear what kind of music will come to life that day.
―― Seems like it’s going to be a day where we can fully enjoy each artist’s music.
Keiko: That’s right. I think it will be a day where you can experience the charms of each and every artist. All the participating artists will be choosing songs that carry a certain meaning, that convey feelings fitting that particular day. We also chose songs that we thought people would enjoy listening to on that day, songs that have a lot of soul and spirit. On March 11 we want to create music together. We can’t do it by ourselves so we would like to involve everyone so we can all create something special together.
―― Whether it is at a big venue like Budokan or a small venue like a livehouse, you previously said you want your lives to always feel the same way but I suppose there are some differences regarding the amount of heat and passion.
Keiko: That’s true. While it is our main concern to treat each of our lives with equal respect, we are able to really look our audience in the eye at live house concerts. At times I will look at someone with so much intent that they will avert their eyes *laughs*
Wakana: We have even received letters by fans who are stating that they got embarrassed because “Keiko-san was looking at me too intently” *laughs* But still we continue to look into everyone’s eyes.
Keiko: Everyone please be sure to be attentive on March 11! *laughs* We hope to make this a powerful day all about conveying emotions, about receiving and treasuring each other’s feelings.
―― I think Kalafina’s biggest strength is the fact that you are a trio, amazing sounds are brought to life when your voices are harmonising with each other, they are capable of touching the listener’s heart, forever leaving an imprint.
Keiko: Whenever we are doing live activities we are always trying to keep certain things in mind, we are thinking about the way we want to convey our words, how to use the strengths in our voices so our listeners can best embrace our music, how to express our feelings. I myself am always absorbing what the other two are singing so when our voices finally come together it is a strange feeling that’s very hard to put into words, it feels like our hearts are being spun together. Even during up-tempo songs we want to create the best harmonies possible so we have set boundaries for ourselves in order to never get too excited. There’s one thing we will always stick to, we don’t want to ever destroy our harmony, aside from that we are continuing to do what we enjoy. Ever since we started doing our acoustic lives I have become much more aware of the power of our voices, I want to continue exploring it even further.
「There are so many amazing things that happened to me in those 10 years, at the end of my life when I look back at that time I will be glad that I had these 10 years, until my very last moments I want to treasure the memories of this intense decade」(Hikaru)
―― On January 23, the day of your debut, you held your 10th Anniversary Live at Nippon Budokan, when you look back at these ten years, do you feel like time went by quickly or do you feel like it was a very long time?
Wakana: On the one hand it feels like a long time because we have experienced so much, have made so much progress…but on the other hand when I look back on our past together, it seems like time flew by. Last year we held our “9+ONE” tour leading up to our 10th Anniversary. The theme of that tour was to do everything we could to properly face our 10th Anniversary and then for our actual 10th Anniversary Live we had decided to hold a concert that all of us (we ourselves, our audience and our musicians) could enjoy. It felt like we had been preparing 365 days for that live. We performed 27 songs at Budokan that day but it felt like the concert was over too quickly, that’s why I feel like the past 10 years also passed by in the blink of an eye.
Keiko: For me time flew by. We devoted ourselves to so many things and before I knew it ten years had passed *laughs* I am the type of person that sticks to a strict schedule so days usually pass by quickly. Whenever I look back on the past ten years, I realise that every year we got to do more and more things, it’s a true blessing and I had lots of fun, for me it feels like no time has passed at all.
Hikaru: I also feel like time went by too fast. However, there are so many amazing things that happened to me in those 10 years, at the end of my life when I look back at that time I will be glad that I had these 10 years, until my very last moments I think I will be treasuring the memories of this decade, a truly intense time.
「People of all age groups attend our lives starting from elementary school children to senior citizens. That’s why we refrain from saying “fans” we prefer to call them our “audience”」(Wakana)
―― In these past ten years amazing music was created, great lives were held, you have received a lot of energy from your audience and in return your audience has received a lot of energy from you.
Wakana: Our documentary movie “10th Anniversary Film ~A Sparkling Harmony Spun out of Dreams~” which is scheduled to release in cinemas on March 30 also contains footage of our 10th Anniversary Live. When I watched that footage all I could see were smiling faces in the audience. Everyone had such a lovely expression on their face *laughs*
Keiko: At the end of each live we will always give a final greeting where we thank our audience, whenever we do that we in turn receive many words of gratitude from them. There have been a lot of exchanges like this during our tour last year. How do I say that…this connection…this relationship…it moves me deeply each and every time.
―― Your fans love you so much so they probably can’t help but utter these words of gratitude.
Keiko: Ever since our debut we have never really seen them as “fans”.
Hikaru: Yes, we never really use the word “fan”.
Wakana: That’s right, for us it has always been about each individual person.
Keiko: We are always singing with that in mind.
Wakana: Men and women of all ages will come to our lives, starting from elementary school children to senior citizens, that’s why we prefer to call them our “audience”. There might even be some people who come to see us just to listen to one particular song but then they might find other songs nice as well, it makes me really happy when people like that end up liking us. I am so grateful that I have been able to feel like this for such a long time.
Keiko: We have so many different people supporting us that’s why so far we have always done what we thought was best to convey our music to our audience, whether that be through band style, through acoustic style, in live houses or in classical halls.
「Our strength is that we can perform songs of all kinds of genres, with our harmony we can express many different aspects of our songs」(Wakana)
―― That’s right, your strength is that your lives have so many styles.
Hikaru: When we decided to try a more classical style I was trembling with fear at first *laughs*
Wakana: I think it’s great that we can do our annual “Kalafina with Strings” Christmas lives, our strength is that we can perform songs of all kinds of genres, with our harmony we can express many different aspects of our songs.
―― It seems like many fans that listen to various Kalafina lives have an ear for music.
Wakana: I feel like people are seeking to enjoy themselves, I guess they are coming to see us because they feel like listening to music and having fun. I am really happy that amongst all different kinds of music they chose to seek out Kalafina’s music. When our producer Kajiura-san told us that we should have more confidence in the fact that there are many people out there who are listening to Kalafina I felt reassured. I want to hold on to that hoping that she wasn’t wrong about it.
「Our documentary film is dedicated to tracing back our past 10 years. We have included lots of footage that I never thought we would include, there are many surprising scenes which made it into the final cut 」(Keiko)
――Just now you mentioned your documentary film, “10th Anniversary Film ~A Sparkling Harmony Spun out of Dreams~”, among other things it will include footage of your Anniversary Live at Budokan as well as your World Heritage Lives in Nikko and Nara, this work will not only show the sides of Kalafina that are usually shown to the outside world, no, it will dig deeper and provide glimpses of what’s going on behind the scenes. How was it to work with a camera constantly following you?
Hikaru: For half a year we had a camera pretty much glued to us, having it so close made me feel uneasy at first but at some point I got used to it and I wasn’t even aware of its existence.
Keiko: At first it was a bit awkward, weird words would come out of my mouth and I would act strangely but I soon got used to it, by the end it felt like the camera-man weren’t even holding a camera, it felt like he was simply carrying a bag or something *laughs*
Wakana: Always the same bag *laughs*
Keiko: Starting from our World Heritage lives up until our backstage activities for our Budokan Live in January we have captured pretty much everything on camera, in all that time I think our sense of distance to the camera has also changed, I feel like throughout these months the change was visible and you will be able to notice it in the film.
Hikaru: I think I was the last person to become comfortable in front of the camera. *laughs*
Keiko:We had cameras follow us closely for half a year but we also included lots of footage from the old days so this film really covers our journey throughout the past 10 years. When I watched the final cut, I realised that they included footage I never thought they would include, there were so many scenes I didn’t expect to see.
Wakana: When the three of us watched it together we were surprised by many scenes, at that point I really I wanted to include audio commentary of our reactions *laughs* But since this is our first contact with a film like that, it seemed a little unreasonable *laughs*. We focused on filming aspects that were leading up to our 10th year, the thoughts of our movie director was also included, I was deeply moved when I watched those scenes. For this entire time we always had the same camera-man, he had been following us ever since our acoustic lives and then when we met him again for the rehearsals of our Budokan live he told us that it made him really emotional to be able to witness that important moment together with us. Hearing him say this made me very happy. He has always had a smile on his face when he filmed, it felt like we had become close friends, so I was truly touched by his words. I definitely want all of you to see this film!

[TRANS] Excite Music - FTISLAND’s 10th Debut Anniversary “There is the feeling that everything will definitely be okay as long as there is the 5 of us” / Interview 1
■ FTISLAND / Single "Paradise" Interview (1/2)
This year, FTISLAND who has just celebrated their 10th debut anniversary in Korea, is releasing their 17th single, “Paradise”. A song that Hongki composed and wrote while imagining the sea, Paradise is a love song with a grand atmosphere. On that Hongki, ”It is a song that I hope you can listen to while imagining the face of that someone that you want to listen to it together with. Regardless of my intention while making it, I want everyone to listen to it freely.” Furthermore, they also talked about their new song, Paradise, and the secret of FTISLAND’s good relationship in this 10th debut anniversary of theirs.
For Paradise, regardless of my intention as I made it, I want you to listen to it freely.
――Paradise. a song that Hongki composed and wrote, is a love song with a grand atmosphere, can you tell us about the theme?
Hongki: The first theme that came into my head when I just started making the song was paradise, so I decided to have it as the title. From there, as I pictured sea in my head, I think that’s why the song turned out to be grand.
Seunghyun: I think it is a perfect song for summer. It is a relaxing song, it would be nice to listen to it before sleeping.
Jaejin: We have been trying out various rock style lately, but rather than straight and hard rock, a rock that has various genres mixed in it is more popular all over the world. Paradise seems to fit such trend for now. Honestly, as it is not a hard song, at first, I thought that it might not be so FTISLAND. But as I listened more to it, I thought of.. “ahh.. it is a nice song”. I think it is a nice-to-listen-to song.
Choi Jonghoon (Guitar, Keyboard)
――Paradise is a song that is the result of a collaboration with overseas writers, which usual from the usual Hongki team.
Hongki: That’s right. I did the recording in Japan, but I thought that working together with professionals from overseas will be an opportunity to study too, so everyone in my team went. It was amazing! They understood what I was talking about right away, and even gave me ideas on what to do next. So fast!
――What kind of things that you studied?
Hongki: The first thing that I really felt was so different was the selection of timbre. I learned to use something that I usually wouldn’t use in the past, be it snare, kick, or synth effect. So I feel like I have broadened the way I see myself too.
――So with this, are you planning to do something new too with your team?
Hongki: Well, my team is my team, so we will do whatever we like (laughs). But it was fun.
――I thought you meant Primadonnas with the word “you” in the song, but did you write it for some certain person?
Hongki: This is not a song that I made thinking of someone specific, or that I made intentionally for someone. I want you to listen to it while thinking of someone that you would like to listen to it together with, it is all up to the listeners. Regardless of the intention that I had while making this song, I want you to listen to it freely.
Lee Hongki (Vocal)
――Speaking of FTISLAND’s paradise, as expected, it would be live performances, right? As FTISLAND AUTUMN TOUR 2017 -Here is Paradise- will start in Toyosu Pit on September 7, in what moment during lives that you feel the most happiness?
Jonghoon: Indeed, lives are our paradise. I only wear one ear-monitor, so that, I can still hear everyone’s voices in the hall. Listening to everyone’s cheers, I feel energized, and it feels like there is this power that comes into my performance. More than anything else, I think I feel the happiest when I see fans’ smile.
――Talking about lives, it has now become a custom for Jaejin to shout “Everyone, thank you!!” in the end of every concert without any mic. What mad you start doing it?
Jaejin: During lives, situations might come up that hinder us from giving our best performance. So, I thought of what I can do so I can convey to the fans that I feel sorry about it.
