a good friend of mine works in marketing for the music industry (she worked with fifth harmony, most notably) and she says she has never heard of PR relationships being even close to the thing us non-industry people think they are. she’s said that of course people choose to closet themselves but it’s a personal choice and that there are promo photo ops for music getting released, but not actual relationships. do you think it’s just that she hasn’t worked for anyone who has done it or that it’s really not a thing as much as we think? (this isn’t in response to robsten cause I agree with you on them but idk)
Look the music industry is a very big concept. I think serious musicians if we can call it that don’t do this stuff much because very few musicians are trying to get recognizability in gossip/entertainment pages tbh. The music is what sells and they’re part of the image. Like Lana, Adele, Lily Allen etc - wouldn’t ever need to PRmance because their music and branding is what sells not their love life. Taylor was different because she explicitly marketed her love life - Olivia is now doing the same - but as y’all know I’m not of the belief that like it was all of it fakity fake I really only think Tay Squared and Haylor were explicitly showmances.
Where stunting and showmances happen quite widely is in film and TV because it’s not about the output/band it’s often about the chemistry of the leads so you have to sell that chemistry and everyone has to know it exists and believe in it. That said, I think the wide-ranging conspiracy network that people try to expose on Tumblr and Twitter is grossly exaggerated for sure. A lot of showmances are tbh just exaggerated real life things (this is what I’ve tried to explain, like people hook up on set because young people are horny fucks, and the marketing machine kicks in to spin it into something to get press for the film or work friendships are drummed up as BEST FRIENDS FOREVER but once the promo period ends these people forget about each other coz they were just friendly colleagues). There are also types of people/organizations who do it much more than others. For example, tween marketing often includes fake relationships (Disney, Nickelodeon, CW etc because kids love reading about their faves dating) and marketing a male celeb on a mass level often involves fakey shit whether pap walks or even just fake rumors to make them more desirable.
Disney and CW stars mostly cannot date unless it’s pre-approved. They do therefore end up mostly with one another because that’s what’s approved and encouraged. Does stuff happen? Oh for sure. They’re all hot and young and have money to boot. But is the way their relationship portrayed necessarily exactly how it is? Not really. They’re gonna try spin a story to fit the kind of brand/image they want the actors to have.
Lili x Cole were by all accounts messy AF. They dated but it was BAD for massive chunks of it and he like cheated on her a bunch. But obvi most of the coverage tried to make it seem Bughead-esque to encourage interest in them and in the show.
To go to closeting obvi it is a personal choice to some degree - exactly the same as normal life. However, execs do regularly tell talent not to come out or at least discourage it because it limits sales. Again they don’t hate the talent, many are perfectly pleasant people not evil homophobes, but they’re aware that an out star isn’t gonna sell as much so they try limit that fiancial loss.
So is it this evil conspiracy where everything is fake and there’s a private private life and a public private life? Sometimes sure but certainly not mostly and where that is the case it’s naturally hard. Are showmances a way some parts of the entertainment industry market celebs? Absolutely because gossip is a multi million dollar industry and it sells. People love reading about celeb love lives. People love watching films where the leads are in love offscreen. People love it when their favorite TV show cast are besties. They don’t want to know that they’re actually all friends with other people and it’s the same as their own office or that the two 20 year olds aren’t necessarily passionately and cutely in love but rather just got drunk and fucked. So obviously manufacturing more of the former is part of what publicists and marketing teams do.
I hope that answers the question idk?
