So this pic manages to be dangerous in two separate ways.

1) Please do not out your kids as autistic without their informed consent, especially for sweeties.

This is literally telling a predator, in a confusing situation, that your kid might well be easier for them to target. Plus giving out private medical information about your kid when it is not needed is not okay. That stuff sticks around and may impact on them in other places.

The colour blue is also linked to Autism Speaks, a eugenicist organisation that actively funds research to identify and abort autistic foetuses.

2) The Teal Pumpkin project is a scheme for people *giving out* treats to signify they have treats without marked allergens or non-food treats available for kids with allergies. They put one by the door and keep the treats inside one indoors to limit cross-contamination with other treats.

This is positive because it’s about including kids with allergies in the festival *without* giving out their private medical information.

The fact that this has already confused this really excellent project was exactly what a lot of adult autistic activists warned would happen when we asked people NOT to do the blue bucket thing 🤬

The Teal Pumpkin Project is a project started by FARE (food allergy research and education) to help make sure that kids with food allergies can still enjoy Halloween. Basically, if you plan on participating you set out a teal pumpkin (+ put your address on the Teal Pumpkin Map) which shows that you will provide non-food treats for kids with food allergies!

As someone who grew up with food allergies, Halloween was quite hard for me. I'd always have to give my entire bag of candy to my siblings (my mom always bought candy for me after the fact, but it was still sad to me and made me feel left out) because one improperly wrapped peanut product would make the entire bag of treats dangerous for me.

So, of course when I started handing out candy and found out about the teal pumpkin project, I HAD to participate. I've been handing out non-food treats since I was 15? around there? so like 6+ years :D

Over the last few years I've been slowly increasing what I do for Teal Pumpkin Project things. in 2023 I handed out gift bags to kids with food allergies and delivered one gift bag to a very sad little girl with Covid (left it on her doorstep and talked with her through the window)

This year, I want to expand my activities to encompass any kid in my town unable to trick-or-treat due to disabilities :) wish me luck <3

TEAL PUMPKIN PROJECT

It's nearly Halloween and that means it's time for me to talk about the Teal Pumpkin Project again! This is an initiative to provide non-food based options for Trick-or-Treating. Primarily so those kids who have food-based allergies can participate, but I have found some kids would just rather have a toy (parents seemed keen on it too).

I've been handing out a few candy bits in these decorated bags for a while now (because it's fun to speed doodle these things and small brown bags are cheap) and folks seem to enjoy it. For the food-free ones I took a knife, a potato and some teal paint and stamped out some pumpkin shapes before I did my doodles. I fill them with activity zines I made, crayons, erasers and little toys. You can get them pretty cheap (especially after Halloween and save them for next year). The link up above has more info and a little map you can add your house to (anonymously, if you desire) so that families can find places to go. OR, you can use that map to find places in your area that have save treats for your kids! I usually have a little pumpkin I paint up with some teal designs, some folks buy teal buckets or balloons to identify the houses participating. Spread the word and join in some safe and spooky fun!

I just spent the last two hours carving this styrofoam teal pumpkin from Target. With a standard-sized serrated knife. On my bed. In a slouched position. I’m covered in toxic-smelling styrofoam flakes and so is my bed and blankets. I think the latex fumes are giving me a headache

But I’m so proud of this! I’ll just make sure to do it at a table next time

It’s a teal pumpkin to show kids with allergies we have non-food treats. I got some plastic Halloween themed costume glasses and glow-in-the dark fang teeth. I admit they’re not the best prizes but that’s what happens when you wait till the last minute to do shopping for a holiday. I’m going to wash them all with dish soap before I give them to the trick-or-treaters

Considering this is my first time carving a jack-o-latern with my own hands, she turned out really good. Proud of this cute face

I’m also going to be setting up a folding table in our driveway next to the sidewalk as a trick or treat station so it can be wheelchair accessible if need be. I’ll post that too once it’s up tomorrow

The Teal Pumpkin Project

Halloween is just days away, so I'm sure everyone that plans to give out candy is getting their treats ready, filling bowls with delicious things to hand out to excited kiddos. It might be a little late, but I'd like to draw your attention to something that gets forgotten each year: children with food allergies.

This is a very food-driven holiday, and kids with allergies end up with bags full of things they can't touch. It can be an incredibly frustrating and isolating experience to throw away half of the holiday while their peers get to enjoy it without them, if they participate in trick-or-treating at all.

That's where the Teal Pumpkin Project comes in. Teal is the color for food allergy awareness, and the Teal Pumpkin Project urges people to consider these kids when they prepare for Halloween, to make the holiday more inclusive for the 1 in 13 children that have food allergies.

If you want to participate, you can put a teal pumpkin outside your house, and have non-food goodies like stickers or cheap little toys for trick-or-treaters. You can still give out candy if you like, just keep it separate and have a sign out telling kids to ask if they need the allergen-free treats.

You can also mark your house on this map, so people involved with the project know where they can bring their kids for safe goodies!

and hey, please consider giving out some non-food goodies as well, like little dollar store toys, fun erasers, yo-yos, etc.! 1 in 13 kids have a food allergy, and many others have intolerances or other health conditions that require them to avoid common allergens.

You could take some stress off an allergy kiddo’s Halloween by a) giving out some non-food items (in a separate bowl from the candy!), and b) putting out a teal pumpkin/adding your home to the Teal Pumpkin Project Map, to let parents and their trick-or-treaters know that you have allergy-safe treats!

I have life-threatening peanut and tree allergies, and growing up I always went trick-or-treating anyways, but when we got home my parents would have to take all my candy and replace it with safe candy they’d bought. Bc even the nut-free things carried a risk of cross-contact if they were in the same bowl with reese’s pieces or snickers or whatever. It always made me feel really sad and left out, but the rare houses where they gave out non-food goodies made me feel so happy!! You, too, could help a kid feel included on what is arguably the coolest holiday of the year :-)

It's a holiday. For children. Give them the candy, or fuck off.

We are 2 months away from Halloween!!!

Of course, I MUST WITH A CAPITAL “M” make a Halloween-themed board on Pinterest, filled with memes, recipes, costume ideas, and my Teal Pumpkin patch items at Zazzle! And I aptly called it Halloween from Teal Pumpkin (and Regular) Patches!

Check out this SWEET vinyl decal - perfect for attaching to your car window at your next trunk-or-treat. It signifies that you have non-food treats on hand to give to everyone, whichever their special diets, allergies, or preference to, well, non-food items!

Even better - I first drew and colored in the image on paper with the colored pencils and crayons I had on hand (shipped most of the rest to the Philippines when I did so back in summer 2022). Then I scanned the image and refined it on GIMP.

I’ve now seen more than one post from U.K.-based as well as US-based people promoting “blue pumpkins for autism”.

For the love of literally any god you want, this autistic adult is asking you to please do not engage in this or promote it.

a) it was promoted by Autism $peaks, the pro-eugenics organisation that actively promotes trying to prevent autistic people being born. They are considered a hate organisation by the vast majority of autistic adults. The focus on “blue anything for autism” is also an active contributor to the diagnosis gap in autistic women, girls and nonbinary people who don’t present or are read as “traditionally male”.

b) they are dangerous because they create confusion regarding the Teal Pumpkin Project, which indicates a household has treats available that don’t contain allergens.

c) they are dangerous because they mark out a potentially more vulnerable non-verbal child to predators in a potentially chaotic situation.

d) they are stigmatising AF. No one owes anyone else a medical diagnosis in return for sweets. There are a whole variety of reasons a child might not speak while guising/trick or treating, nor should anyone require them to. They’re not performing dolls. Just give them sweets please.

e) this entire movement is stigmatising and anti-inclusion. It promotes inaccurate stereotypes about autistic people that actively contribute to the many harms autistic and other disabled people face.

If you don’t want to participate in this festival, please just keep lights off or put up a notice on your door. If you want to participate, please give sweets out to everyone without requiring them to do things a specific way for your idea of how children are meant to act. It’s a festival, not an exam.

🎃HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 🎃

I know I am a little early (or a little late at being a little early), but I want to talk about something that there is still time for folks to participate in should they choose to. It's called The Teal Pumpkin Project and it is about giving Trick-or-Treaters who may have allergies or food restrictions an alternative option to take home so that the kids can still have the fun of going trick-or-treating!

It's pretty easy to participate, all you have to do is offer something for them that is not a food! Maybe a comic book, or a little toy or crayons or anything kid friendly and maybe a little spooky! I personally hand out little activity zines I print out (I make them myself, and also sell them at cons, should you ever want to pick some up!) along with a little set of crayons, maybe an eraser or little toy. You can get that kinda stuff in party packs at your local party/craft stores for a decent deal.

This doesn't mean you can't still hand out candy! Just make sure that things are properly labeled or easily identified! I make up little baggies with teal pumpkins on the ones that do not have candy. You may have to explain a little at the door, but a lot of the parents appreciate it and I think the kids are interested too (sometimes. Candy has a strong allure.)

On the website there is a map that you can add your house to and describe the treats you have, although you do not have to identify yourself publicly. Then you just put out your teal pumpkin (or other identifying item) and hand out goodies as usual!

Color Guide for matching Festival Genes + Primal Eyes

Now i want to say this is not meant to be some definitive guide. These are just my attempts at matching colors as closely as i could find with what's available on the color wheel currently. Some of which were quite tricky to find a good match for (or is maybe not even the best use for the gene, looking at you Crystalline...). Will list the colors used for the scries above, but I'll also have some notes for some other similar matches or other color ideas. Overall, this was just a fun little project to work on as the genes released, and maybe some will find some use from it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Light: Sanddollar (Flaxen is a very close 2nd, if you want a very slight warmer color. Banana could also pass, but i find it a little too dark compared to the eyes)

Lightning: Robin (This one's tricky since the color IS the lightning rather than the outline, but Robin is bright enough to give the illusion of being white with a matching blue outline. Aqua is a close 2nd, but again is a little to dark in comparison)

Fire: Sunshine (Saffron if you want darker, more orange fire. Marigold if you want a lighter, more yellow fire. Sunshine is the middle ground of these two. All 3 of these match very closely, so up to your personal preference here)

Arcane: Bubblegum (Matching to the little runes. If you want to match to the eyes themselves, Orchid is the closest match without being too dark in color)

Plague: Vermilion (Berry if you want something less egregiously bright. But i do think Vermilion is technically a closer color match, tho both are very close. If you want a color flipped match, Chartreuse matches the colors pretty well, or Crocodile is you want a similar pallet but less bright (and also has a slight bit more red to it's accents). Bonus color: while it doesn't really match the eyes, Red has a very good Plague-y vibe, if you're a fan of the red+green aesthetic)

Earth: Pumpkin (This one has been the most difficult one to match with all the colors going on with both the eyes and genes. But it leads to a bunch of potential options that just kinda almost match. Ultimately tho there's not really a perfect match for these, just go by your own preference. Ginger matches close for a solid color match. For multi-toned picks, some other good options are Caramel, Peach, Ivory, Seafoam, and Cream. Sadly there's not really any colors that adds more pink secondary tones. (also as an added bonus for these: if you want to match with the geode currency used for the festival: teal, ultramarine, and splash are some good picks)

Ice: Eggplant (Indigo if you want just a very slight more saturation, but ultimately the two are nearly indistinguishable from each other. if you want some really dark blue ice in the same hue, Sapphire works well. If you want a lighter ice color: Sky, Periwinkle, Twilight, and Storm are the closest without going just full on white)

Shadow: Grape (Royal or Violet for a more subdued color, tho i find them a little too bright. The strong highlights on this gene make it tricky to match perfectly, especially when we don't have many darker purples as is. But at the same time, you really can't go too wrong with most of the purple range with this gene, it's just a matter of preference)

Wind: Peridot (Not much to say about this one. This color is incredibly spot on. I guess, if you want something a little darker, Pear matches the darker tips of the eyes)

Water: Cornflower (The whole Lapis-to-Sky range works here, for varying degrees of saturation and brightness, but i think overall Cornflower has the best balance out of all of them? (it looks the closest on adult dragons at least). Idk, this one's really tricky too xP And i am once again painfully reminded that we don't really have any good super vibrant colors in the sky blue range T___T All the closest colors are either too green or too faded. Also as a bonus option: If you want a foamy look, Ice and Pistachio work really well for this)

Nature: Orca (I initially thought Peridot would win this one, but then Orca came out of nowhere. Peridot's still another good option tho, the flowers are just a little more on the green side than the ones on the eyes (but they do match with the actual 'eye' part of the eyes). Also for a bonus color, Pearl also looks really nice paired with nature eyes, even tho it does have a lot of purple in the vines. the leaves and flowers still match really well. And as far as i can find, there's not really a good way to match the vines to the vines of the eyes, since that parts seems to stick to darker colors and browns)

This is a fic in celebration for a birthday for a wonderful fic author, artist and musician who I have come to cherish. Happy birthday, babes! May your birthday stampede you into a merriment of unhinged creativity, love and adventure. @sordidmusings you are spectacular. I adore you, queen. It has been a hot minute since I've loved on the clown, but I am more than happy to break that seal in celebration of your day.

Warnings: Fluff. Extra fluff. Pining, yearning. Fluff.

It had been months of longing, pining and yearning; always adoring from afar but falling within an uncomfortably close proximity to you. Your hair, your posture, your scented perfume that warmly welcomed the atmosphere surrounding you in a blissful melody.

Buggy was enamoured. Some could even say smitten.

The way he would always find himself seeking out your gaze as he relayed an unhinged and inappropriate joke; or offer a grimace-like smile, wincing his eyes in an upturned tilt when he dropped one of his juggling balls while attempting to entertain you.

Of all of the things he longed for most, from the touch of your skin in an embrace to the warmth of your hands to soothe over his hair to tame his long and wild locks – he was longing, pleading and begging with his twinkling teal eyes to meet his painted lips against your own in a simple kiss.

It didn’t have to be overly complicated or flashy, not at least the first time. Just a simple expression of the adoration he held for you in his cryptid and enthusiastic heart.

Each time he would almost bump into you in the hallways, he would immediately focus on the gasp falling from your parted lips. Accidentally opening the door to the communal shower-room, and finding you with a foamy toothbrush thrust between your teeth; he longed to lunge forward to remove the object and messily join with you in a jovial and romantic osculation with his lips firmly thrusting against your own.

He craved such an opportunity to kiss you. Ached within his bones to express how he truly felt about you. The only thing truly holding him back from claiming you within his arms and folding himself against your body, tilting and stooping to draw you in with his eyes closed and concentrated was the complete and utter terror he felt at the knowledge the feelings he felt for you was not reciprocated.

So he stopped, halting his motions at the last second: his hands stuttering as he drew his palm down to halt his trembling fingertips from its contact with your shoulder.

And then it happened. A single moment. A fixed point in time he could draw his lips intentionally against your own with no such consequence. Tradition determined it to be acceptable, and some could even say rude should the request be denied.

As he watched your knife slide into the caramelized top of the baked, fudgy cheese-cake and raked itself slowly through the creamy surface: his eyes widened with youthful hope you would shatter the buttery crumbed crust to project his dreams of a kiss into reality. Dipping in the indent, a slow drizzle of jammy fruit seeped into the crevasse you created within the slice as he heard the familiar crunch of the steel blade dividing itself into the biscuit base.

The clang of the blade as it met with the ceramic dish supporting the sweet dessert echoed in his mind, ringing in his ears with the hope he held within his heart that he would finally, at long last, have the opportunity to meet his lips against your own. His tongue darted out to dampen his bottom lip in anticipation, all actions reducing to a slowed pace as he watched your lips draw up to reveal your beautiful smile.

Your cheeks tinted with a warm flush, your eyes shining with both embarrassment at the tune offered in celebration of your birth, and the anticipation that the man you harboured hidden affection for was standing very close in proximity to your own. The rising rapidity of your heart had your breath catching in your throat as you withdrew the blade fully from the cake in front of you.

Candles whispering the memory of blown flame, smile plastered against your lips with your eyes upturning in joy; you looked immediately to the blue-haired clown beside you as the chorus of taunting jabs befell the crew in front of you.

“You gotta’ kiss the closest person!”

“Go on, give ‘em a kiss!”

“Don’t be shy!”

“Lay one on ‘em!”

A giggle fell from your parted lips, your broad smile faltering slightly to hold a coy and apprehensive grin. You blinked slowly, looking up at the man beside you with both anticipation and adoration.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want-,” your words were syphoned into the warm and deliberate lips of the blue-haired clown – literally taking your apprehensive words right out of your mouth to fall within his own.

Buggy’s heart was soaring, the moment he longed for most was now becoming a reality with little to no consequence. He smiled into the kiss, drawing up his gloved hands to cradle your face and tilting his head to deepen the kiss he was imparting onto you. Brows furrowed in passionate concentration, he utilised every muscle to halt his body from simply throwing his leg over your own and becoming comfortably sat atop your lap and drawing himself completely flush against your body.

His thoughts were becoming harder and harder to control, especially now you placed your right hand against his left hip to steady him against yourself. Tilting your head, you parted your lips and allowed an apprehensive gasp to fall from your mouth and into his own. Buggy’s gloved hand trailed back to rake your hair behind your ears, lacing his fingertips within your strands to clutch the back of your head more firmly. He stifled a whimpered groan that threatened to pass from his lips into your own, thoroughly attempting to withhold his joy from its expression - especially considering you both had an audience.

As you withdrew him from the embrace, you fluttered your eyes open to gaze at the closed eyes of the infamous clown-captain. His jaw was tense and concentrated, his face falling lower in its stoop to chase after your lips in reaction to your withdrawal. Brow furrowed, lips parted and smeared with the tint of red; the clown flittered his long, blue eyelashes open to gaze longingly into your eyes. A sigh fell from his lips as his jaw trembled in apprehension.

The bob of his Adam’s apple cemented his resolve as he leant forward to place his forehead affectionately against your own, whispering gently and dotingly into your smiling face:

“Happy Birthday, Pumpkin.”

Hey so I’ve mentioned this a lot of times on my main blog, but I wanted to put this out over here since it is Hallow’s Eve. I always give out little tchotchkes on Halloween along with candy. This year, I’ve completely switched over to 100% doohickeys and doodads— think mechanical pencils, shaped erasers, little notebooks, squishes, vampire teeth and spiders rings and all. It started years ago in college when I signed up for a dorm Halloween event where kids from an area that was too dangerous to really trick or treat through got bussed in to trick or treat at our dorm. I bought some candy and dollar store Halloween themed stuff with what i had. And you know what the kids went ape shit over?

Motherfucking. Mechanical. PENCILS!!

These kids could not get enough of them. They literally went “PENCILS??!” I had never seen kids get so hyped up for pencils lmao. They were the first things to go. Candy is fleeting; the little pencils you can bring to school to flex are eternal, until you inevitably lose one of the refill parts and then they aren’t but listen, in that one moment they are infinite. And its nice thinking that maybe some kids who don’t always have access to school supplies not only get them, but get them in fun shapes and designs.

Anyway. I recommend people to give out fun stuff like this not just because kids seem to genuinely enjoy them, but also because there’s this thing called the Teal Pumpkin Project here in America. You can put out a teal pumpkin to show that you are giving away non-candy items and sign your address up so parents of children with allergies know that there are houses their kids can safely and happily trick or treat at! It’s a win-win! Plus, if you accidentally bought too much, it’s not like candy— just pack it away, pencils and fidget spinners will be good next year, too! :)
