Short Attention Span and Enlightenment
Q: Lama, I’m concerned that I don’t have enough shamatha to practice vipassana. I recently read that goldfish have more attention than humans these days.
LM: I’m unconvinced of the scientific evidence that supports this, but it is commonly believed that the attention span of a goldfish is about nine seconds while the average attention span of a human being according to a fairly recent Microsoft study is about eight seconds (see study in comments section).
Q: In Sutra teachjngs it’s pretty clear that a fairly stable shamatha practice is required to develop vipassana, or insight meditation.
LM: The fourth level of shamatha, also known as "Close Placement," is characterized by an ability to focus on the meditation object with only minimal distraction. At this stage, practitioners can typically maintain their concentration for longer periods, often around 20 minutes to an hour. However, this can vary significantly among individuals based on their practice and experience. Yes, reaching the fourth level of shamatha is often considered a sufficient foundation for beginning Vipassana (insight) meditation. In Vipassana, the stable and calm mind cultivated through shamatha is used to investigate the nature of phenomena, leading to deeper understanding and insight. However, the transition from shamatha to Vipassana can vary depending on the individual's practice and the guidance of their teacher.
Q: Sounds like I would be better off being a goldfish.
LM: Perhaps better to use this precious human birth wisely and refrain from unnecessarily stirring up your mind with negative associations, too much time on the web and social media and instead committing to the development of calm-abiding. If you are honest with yourself, then realistically there is nothing that is holding you back.
In the Samadhi Sutta (SN 22.5), the Buddha states that a mind well-concentrated through jhana (concentration and absorption) practice is capable of seeing things as they truly are, leading to the development of insight. The deeper the concentration achieved through jhana, the more powerful and penetrating the insight can be.
May this be of benefit 🙏

Dr. Wes has recently taped another series of his one minute exam pearls, the innovative, popular, and fast-growing educational series of compact, high-yield test-prep lessons packed into 60 seconds for Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media. For all you #KantKon and other music fans, fear not, Dr. Wes is still very much engaged as a songwriter and musician, assembling new songs just like before. The one-minute exam pearls series is simply a nice complement to the music with the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down so many musical events for a while. and it's helped to spread the band's audience more globally. The two will be advancing in tandem. Just zn FYI to you out there, if you have any requests for lessons that you'd like Wes to record, feel free to post them up here or on any other social media, the recordings mostly begin on TikTok but will be shared on other media as well. Lots of exciting stuff coming soon as we all, hopefully, gradually emerge from the dark shadow of this persistent plague year we've been under for what seems like an eternity already. . . . #educationalservices #teaching #examprep #testprep #exampearls #teachjng #usefulsubjects #highyield #drwes #learningisfun #funlearning #coollearning #creativelessons #oneminutelessons #60secondlessons #60secondlesson #1minutelesson #oneminuteexampearls #drwesoneminuteexampearls #instagramteacher #tiktokteacher #snapchatteacher (at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPb3DBrDWKW/?utm_medium=tumblr

Can I be sick of something real quick
I see a lot of hate on history teachers, and trust me I’ve seen and heard about the bad ones absolutely. What I’m getting sick of is this image of the evil history teachers erasing people or color and the real stories of humanity from the narrative. Is there gross neglegence, absolutely, but has every history teacher sat in their shitty underfunded classroom and muttered “I’m going to downplay colonialism muahhahaha” while wringing their hands? No. We’re in an interesting time for history education. Education period really. There’s a consciousness that hasn’t been actionable until recently. Probable reasons for your teacher teaching you what they did? Either it’s what they were taught (which is changing) or they didn’t have access to the materials or curricular freedom to tell you. I did a practicum (like watered down student teaching) in the same town as my university. They were using textbooks from 2010 for their world history class. It had two pages on Greece and Rome then jumped to the European age of “discovery”. It was sickening. And the teacher tried to supplement it. That’s what he had to work with (but he also was the football/basketball coach, you know the type). A text book not even a decade old at the time that was the same Eurocentric bs we’ve been learning for decades! And this is in one of the better of schools in the state. But like I said, things are changing. Here in Kansas there are now only 5 state curriculum requirements and none of them are about facts and dates. It’s all about student exploration, teaching civic mindedness, and the lessons of history. It’s a beautiful thing. I think it’s like all things, the human process of perfecting and it’s slow and ugly and frustrating but we do it because it’s right. Are there racist old history teachers who glorified the US and Columbus and didn’t tell you enough about Nefertiti? Yeah. Have there also been history teachers breaking curriculum and English teachers slipping in banned books and science teachers who are honest about evolution? Yes, and their students grow up and remember what they learned and the world changes.

I don’t want to go above and beyond I want to scrape by with the minimum, I don’t think this field is really for me so why try super hard? What’s the point? I know I’m not that good so why strive and stress and fight tooth and nail for something that’s going to stay beyond my reach
