Like the Tides

Another door slammed in their faces. The scraping sound of it grated on her mind like knives being drawn across cobblestones  - and Stella actually jumped as the noise startled the little creature. Turning to go, Soren’s sing-song voice cut through the now-muffled shouts of the elves that resided at the residence.  “ Soooo, ” he started, speaking over the colorful, cuss-filled language that was now emitting through the closed door, “how’d you find this place, anyway?” 

Rayla snorted at the question and Stella chitted her teeth, almost as if the cuddlemonkey knew it would strike a nerve. But the elf figured the Crown Guard would eventually be fishing for information about this place. “You’re the one who picked this house,” she joked, side-stepping the inquiry.

Soren wrinkled his nose in annoyance. “You know what I meant,” he responded, pursing his lips together in a pout. 

“Information gets around,” Rayla said vaguely, “and when I was on my own, I was… looking for something.” A clue that came from a tip that came from a whisper that a Dark Mage was making an illegal trade, who could have turned out to be your father but it wasn’t seemed liked too much to say, and she didn’t want to ruin Soren’s optimism with the mention of Viren anyway. “I got the lead and had to see for myself. It was actually my last stop before coming…” her words trailed off before she could properly finish the sentence. 

Going where, Rayla? To Katolis? To Callum? Home?

…Was Katolis even her home?

I'm pretty sure this mofo Finnegron (I'm not bothering remembering his name) is the one who kidnaps and beats Callum up so I hope Rayla whips his ass.

What if- WHAT IF. He asks her to fight in the arena again giving Callum in exchange for winning. She didn't win in the short story because she got discracted cuz Callum but maybe she will win now because he wants to save him! her weakness being her strenght now!

I doubt it will happen but It sounds angsty enough and I like it

Either way she gonna be insane trying to save him.

TDP: New and Old Friends in Scumport

"I said you'd be back."

Rolling her eyes Rayla turns to look at the source of the familiar voice, she'd hoped not to run into during their time in the pirate bay.

"Not that it's any of your business Redfeather, but I'm just passing through."

As if to emphasise this statement, Stella crossses her four little arms and turns her head away in solidarity with Rayla.

Letting out a short snort, the eldar Moonshadow Elf crosses her much thicker arms and continues to speak.

"Really? Because you look just as lost as your last time here. C'mon girl there's no need to be prideful. If you need a hand you can always..."

"Rayla!"

A voice cries out drawing the Elves attention with Redfeather looking on befuddled as a young human lad in a red scarf runs up to Rayla, almost oblivious to the much taller woman, and inciting a smile from the younger woman. One caused by an unmistakable something Redfeather recognizes all too well.

"Are you and Stella ready?" He asks.

"We are, Callum. Just waiting for Soren to make his move."

She scans the misty marketplace for a sign of the blonde, who she still had some trouble believing was now head of the Ezran's Crownguard for some reason.

"Where is he anyway?"

Without hesitation Callum replies.

"He's looking for a fake mustache for his disguise."

That's why.

"But... They've never met before, why would he even need..?"

The mage holds up a hand.

"I tried saying that too, but he just kept insisting that 'Snort Longpocket' just isn't complete without it."

Rayla sighs, clearly just as unwilling to press the topic any further than Callum was.

"Well I guess it couldn't be any less ridiculous than the smokebees."

"Probably. Anyway I gotta get ready with Villads."

He says pulling out one of the blind man's spare hat's from his leather bag, which the old salt had loaned him for the upcoming caper, before placing it over his perpetually windswept hair.

"Arrr'll be seein' you."

Callum declares with a wink and a point as he trots backwards to the direction he came from, inciting a giggle from Rayla. Immediately noticing the huge grin on the older Elf beside her as soon as it stopped.

"What?" She states, a bit more defensively then she meant.

"Nothing. Just forget what I said before. Seems you're right where you want to be afterall."

After a second Rayla relaxes.

"Yeah. I am."

Moonshadow elves and feathers?

In Tales of Xadia there is a non-binary Moonshadow elf character named Feathershawl and it's sounded like a name they chosen for themselves and not the name they were born with.

In the story about Rayla in Scumport we met a Moonshadow elf who calls herself Redfeather. She mentioned that it's a name she chosen for herself and not her real name.

So, we have two Moonshadow elves who chose a new name for themselves and they chose to include the word 'feather' in their name. So, what their deal with that word?

I wish we got an updated version of the map after we unlocked new locations!

Since I focus a lot on Finnegrin these days, I chose this island as a possible location for Scumport. It's close enough to Umber Tor to make the heroes go there make sense and also far enough from the Sea of the Castout to have that whole chase scene + the drama of S5E8.

there is exactly ONE valid Q&A question, and it's: could you please, for the love of god, point to Scumport on the fucking map?????

but no instead people need to know what Callum was going to say to Rayla before she interrupted him with "I know" even though that's at a level of FUCKING OBVIOUS such that I can't even deal with it

the thing is like... if Rayla had never come back, Callum would've been fine.

Worried and emotionally hurt, maybe. He's clearly not doing well in early S4. But he's safe. He's at home, he's well-fed, he's surrounded by his support system even if he doesn't always lean on them (and I think that's true for just about everyone, within TDP or in real life). He still opens up to and lets Ezran comfort him, he's still exchanging letters with Amaya, he has a room full of people excited to celebrate his birthday and appreciates their efforts. He's still excited about and is studying magic, reading up on the primals, investigating the mirror. He's not in immediate danger; he's not self destructing. If he gets sick because of the cold, or breaks a bone because a magic spell has gone wrong, there are people right there to help him, to take care of him.

Meanwhile Rayla is off in Xadia on her own. Her cloak is tattered and torn. Is she always eating well? She struggles to forage a bit in S1 but Xadia would probably be more plentiful. Unless she got hurt, and sprained something. Or attacked by a wild animal. How far is the nearest town, anyway? The nearest medic? Ten miles? Guess she just has to tough it out until then. Cloak drawn up no matter the weather, wind or storm or shine or snow. If she only has enough for her or Stella to have their bellies full, who do we think she's going to give it to? If she gets sick, how much can a little cuddlemonkey do? If she breaks down weeping, who does she have to talk to? To pull her close or rest a comforting hand on her shoulder and tell her everything is going to be okay? She has Stella, I guess, but there were months alone before then. Stella also never seems to really be able to comfort her when she is having breakdowns in S4 and S5, so Stella's helpful, but not a replacement for having, y'know, people there to help.

And the one concrete thing we know about her time away is her time in Scumport, in which she participates in a fighting ring and gets the crap kicked out of her, and is injured again when she encounters a dark mage named Tressal. That's at the end of her journey. How many more things happened while she was gone? Not because she was taking risks, but by happenstance, by accident, because travelling all alone for two years in the wild and trying to find people who would see you as spell ingredients is naturally dangerous.

Rayla left, and Callum was fine, physically if nothing else. She was not, point blank, physically risking anyone else's life when she left. Full stop. Their emotional states are another story.

But if Rayla never came back, she would be Dead.

i never saw it coming, wouldn't have suspected it (T): What if Rayla didn't kiss Callum at the Midnight Desert? Not getting into a relationship, that's for sure. At least, not a real one. When Rayla thinks it's funny to play along when they're mistaken for a couple, everything spins way out of control way too quickly.

i'll keep you close, give you the most: July 3rd-Stay With Me/Don’t Leave Me. Callum and Rayla are idiots, but there are some things that they just don't joke about. Staying is one of them.

he's got hands that make hell seem cold: July 5th-Hands/Touch-starved. Rayla's always been an affectionate person. That's why having Stella was nice, especially when the loneliness got bad. But even a cuddlemonkey can't make up for human contact, can't make up for the love always right at her fingertips that she could never return to. Until she doesn't have to.

white flowers and love letters, you say i'm yours forever: July 7th-Flowers. On their way to the Starscraper, Rayla finds some interesting flowers.

you know i still love you, babe: July 9th-“I Still Love You”–Reconciliation. Rayla and Callum are both edge-frazzled the night before they set off to the Starscraper. They suppose it's just the catalyst for their long-awaited Big Feelings Time.

i'm sorry that i couldn't always be your teenage dream: July 11th-Dream/Nightmare. Callum has a nightmare, and Rayla has a dream. Part of love is sharing in both the other's misery and their happiness.

'cause you said forever, now i drive alone past your street: July 13th-Promise. Callum writes lots of letters in Rayla's absence. He just wants her back, and he won't be mad, he'll just love her... In a world of unknowns, that's all he can promise.

i miss the way he kisses and the way he made me laugh: July 15th-Second First Kiss. All Rayla could think about since getting back was Callum. Finally holding him again, kissing him... The time is just never right. But a watched pot never boils.

what a mesmerizing, paralyzing, messed-up little thrill: July 17th-A Prince and His Princess. Callum and Rayla didn't exactly realize what the consequences of staying in an inn together would entail. But the other is a package deal, and they're worth too much to let a scandal bother them.

i try to rationalize, "people are people," but it's like you're made of angel dust: July 19th-Magic. Four (4) times Callum does magic for Rayla, and one (1) time she does magic for him.

i guess love is never logical: July 21st-An Outside Perspective. Tiadrin is used to adapting quickly, used to non-stop pressure. She's a Dragonguard, after all. But her daughter and the human boy she's far too fond of might just be the hardest thing she'll have to adapt to.

all i ever wanted was to be enough for you: July 23rd-“I Don’t Deserve You”/“You Deserve Everything”. Callum was just supposed to fix her cloak, keep it intact and her warm until he could get her a more permanent one. But he'll be permanent, too, and last far longer and patch her up much more than any coat. Warmer, too.

even after all this, you're still everything to me: July 25th-You’re the Moon In My Sky. Rayla has a fear of falling, even after Callum keeps catching her. But when that fear finally dissipates, when it sinks in that he always will, it's too late.

the taste of your lips is my idea of luxury: On the night of Callum’s eighteenth birthday, the first one he's had with Rayla, she has some birthday kisses to make up for (sixty-six, to be exact).

I'll Do Whatever It Takes (i'll make a million mistakes): Callum didn't remember much about his own father's disease. But he gets to learn all about it with his own son's- and this time, he can do something about it. However dangerous, however vile.

I haven't seen anyone mention this but one of my biggest gripes with tdp s5 was how they almost killed amaya for like... no reason?

she almost died for a fvcking GLOWTOAD. a tOAD!! not even an important plot character. Yes I get Bait is important to Ezran but for AMAYA to die saving BAIT would've been the most stupidest thing ever.

And I don't understand why she wouldn't come back- why she insisted on staying behind and even shouted GO despite being deaf. zubeia came down and zapped tons of those beasts. it looked like she could easily take down the ones surrounding amaya, so why didn't she??? She could've easily saved Amaya and they could get out of there together, but no, then Corvus had to go and nearly get himself killed too??? It felt weird and unnecessary in terms of writing.

I get that Zubeia had to be injured so the gang would be forced to go to Scumport, but she still could've gotten injured while they're leaving without having to make Amaya and Corvus stay behind.

The Dragon Prince Season 5: The Missed Potential of Scumport

Aight so I recently watched the 5th season of TDP and while I enjoyed it a great deal more than Season 4 I still have a few issues with it

The biggest one being that some of the things in the plot just..... don't seem to matter that much? Like they'd setup for something and then completely ignore/forget about it in the show?

Finnigrin was the best part of this season no doubt there, but I felt the Scumport plot lacking somewhat

Like why even make Ezran go to Finnigrin for the ship if they planned for Villads to help the gang?

Just so Ezran can steal those three baby glow toads(that's still pretty stupid to steal from the shady guy running a brutal, lawless place) and get Finnigrin to follow them?

Why tell us that he wanted to kill Domina Profundis when she's such a nothing character this season and no confrontation even happens? Like Finn gets killed before the finale and Domina doesn't matter enough for the audience to care or be interested in that aspect of the plot

Like there were better ways of getting Finnigrin to chase them, I thought that they were initially setting up for Ezran & Zym to steal Finn's fastest or second fastest ship & use Villads to steer it

Could you imagine what it would have been like if they stole his main ship and then Finnigrin chased after in his second fastest one and when he had them in view he just whistled and the "ship" suddenly turned and stood showing the audience it was a crab all along (I still liked the reveal in the show tho)

There's also the whole deal with dark magic this season, we saw more elves willing to use/associate with dark magic or adjacent practices to achieve their goals, Karim, Finnigrin, Kim'Dael

Here's my ideas for the Scumport thing

Finnigrin is the first elf we've seen in the show that deliberately wants to use dark magic(well maybe except the Bloodmoon huntress but it's not exactly clear if the "blood magic" is supposed to be "dark magic")

It would've made much much more sense for Scumport to be a DARK MAGIC HUB where you could purchase and trade in goods used for dark magic

This would also increase the sense of danger in the place if most of the people there were dark magic users, Raya's whole comment about keeping a low profile & the other comment about everyone paying their dues to Finnigrin, there's no need for tension or to be scared for our heros in Scumport if it's just filled with snake oil salesmen

It would also make sense for why Finn wants Bait, maybe adult glow toads are excellent for some dark magic rituals & the little ones don't have much value or take too long to grow

Ezran's decision to save them would much more sense if they were going to be used in dark magic or the leviathans that they'd catch would be used in that way

Also make the gang actually steal one of Finn's ships, or if you really wanna include Ruthless, have Villads be indebted to Finn so he's actually trapped there and Finn has the control of his ship and then they can steal it from him

Make Domina Profundis more relevant this season, it's named Water so the Archdragon of the Ocean should play a bigger role, have Zubeia get injured early on and Domina can serve as our mentor for this season, set up her dislike for dark magic and conflict with Finnigrin/other dark magic users/Scumport and have a failed attempt for assassination by Finn in the finale

The Scumport subplot was the more interesting of part of this season so make it matter more dammit

So a year ago I wrote this (greenmoons is my main account) and because of the game Dragon Prince: Xadia, now we know Darys is a soldier in the border! It was just a random theory and I didn't think half of it could actually be true. But Darys could go to Scumport from a different reason maybe for a break or something. Maybe my theory can still work out and he left the border for a while because Tristan took his dagger and he tried to get a new one.

How did Tristan got the sunforge dagger?

It is always bugged me how Tristan got the sunforge dagger, it's such a rare weapon and it's found it's way to a random humam. I thought at some point will get our answers but the seasons released and books and stories got published and we didn't get any hint about how he got it. We only know Tristan was a soldier at the border before the series begin. So we can assume he got it in the border. But still, only the top knights use sunforge weapons and it would be hard to kill them or get their weapons.

This franchise love to give us hints about many things, characters who seems not important and become important later. So I realized we might already met the sunfire elf who was the original owner of the dagger. It's like the Bloodmoon Huntress appear in the graphic novel before season 5 or how we probably got Tressal cameo's in Chasing Shadows.

So I decided to try and find who is the sunfire elf the dagger was belonged to. I don't think he still in the army if he lost the dagger he could have been banished or decided to leave the army from shame. I tried to find a really talented fighter and then I thought about Darys from Chasing Shadows. He is one of the best fighters in Scumport but he is prideful and think he is the best. He could be a knight with his dagger in the past. He is also an idiot and he could brag to Tristan if they met in the border and Tristan might have beat him and took his weapon, he might run away so he won't get banished or something. Darys is in Scumport that means something did happened to him in the past and he has the skills of a former soldiers.

I think Tristan got the dagger from Darys because I believe after five seasons, three graphic novels and many stories we probably got a hint on the dagger origins.
