"MERCY"
WHAT IS THIS ELF CALLED?
Tumblr media
THE MERCIFUL ONE.
AND WHAT WAS QUEEN ADITI CALLED?
Tumblr media
QUEEN ADITI, THE MERCIFUL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND WE KNOW AARAVOS IS INVOLVED WITH ADITI'S DISAPPEARANCE BECAUSE HE SWALLOWED HER - - -
Tumblr media
Either these are connected OR perhaps TDP just has the motif of 'mercy.' That's cool, too.
(PS - please let me know who took that screenshot so I can credit!)

Some old Amaranthae pieces vs their...still pretty old redraws. :') (Like...2020 to 2022?) I'm gonna be honest...the stabby-stabby piece is on my list for yet another redraw, and I will probably make it a thing where I do so every two or three years, just to see how I'm coming along. It's probably something to do with the fact that, out of all of these, stabbington is the only real established canon event. :')
(The third row used to be, but I removed it because it felt a little too on-the-nose, but I'm going to say the Midnight Desert still happened because Viren made it very clear humans still went on expeditions to Xadia even after Sarai was killed.)
I'll probably update this post with more redraws if ever I do them, but I'm pretty sure I will. :') There's one particular one with a little Claudia that I really wanna take another look at. ā™„
Me still laughing at how I used to draw Viren oh LAWT-

Iā€™ve been thinking about the Aditi/Kimā€™dael timeline and ... help me out here, this is the order of events as I see it:
Aditi disappeared after Lunaā€™s death, but before a successor (eventually Avizandum) could be chosen (source: Zubeiaā€™s info dump)
Later, after becoming King of the Dragons, Avizandum cracked down on the Order of the Blood Moon (source: Karim telling Pharos)
Later, when Kimā€™dael was the only remaining member of the Order, she sought Aditiā€™s protection (source: short story The Queenā€™s Mercy)
... but if that is the order of events, then where does Aditi in 3) come from when she already disappeared in 1)?
I think somewhere it was pointed out that supposed history nerd Karim already made another mistake somewhere, is this another one?

snuggling up to them when they're cold for Kim`dael
It was an unusually cold night, a all consuming biting chill filled the air as the wind wipped the clouds across the the dark, foreboding sky.
There was a winter storm brewing somewhere to the north, driving down the temperatures and chasing any sain person indoors.
Kim'dael pulled her cloak tighter around herself as she darted across gilded rooftops that shimmered in the pale moonlight.
She had had a long day, and the sudden cold snap was not doing her tired self any favours.
It was a small miracle that her favourite space heater had left her balcony door oh so slightly ajar.
Queen Aditi's private bed chamber was always warm, both from the underfloor heating that felt so good to pad across in nothing but socks, and from the figure laying in the beautiful, pillow laden bed in the middle of the room.
Kim'dael slipped under the scarlet and thred of gold covers, smiling with glee as her target tenced up in supprise.
"You." Aditi grumbled as kim'dael snuggled her whole self into the sun queen's back "are an ice cube"
"And you are a delectable campfire," kim'dael purred in response. "And it's such a cold night."
Aditi just grumbled, gave kim'dael an arguably deserved elbow in the ribs, and rolled over to go back to go back to sleep.

The Dragon Prince's "Mercy" Motif
TDP Fam, this is so fascinating.
I made this post about the connection between two characters' names. Nothing is coincidental in this show. The creators have things mapped out for future seasons.
šŸšØSpoilers below! šŸšØ
We know this arc is called The Mystery of Aaravos, and so far - in the show, anyway - he does appear more malevolent than benevolent, using characters as pawns (Viren, Callum, Claudia) to achieve his means (freedom). He was one of the Great Ones, but he lost privilege and title, becoming known as The Fallen Star. It was revealed that he's been behind wars, manipulating leaders for centuries, and so he was locked away because he was too dangerous. (If you're reading this, you've seen the show and know all of this.)
Now...E1S6 (which was previewed at NYCC) opens with a conversation between him and another Startouch Elf. He's distraught - it's the first time we've ever seen Aaravos showing such incredibly desperate emotions. (As I've mentioned, he's being painted as a sympathetic character.)
First, you wanna make a bet these statues depict the very scene featured in S1E6?
Tumblr media
It's too perfect.
Now, this elf is called The Merciful One. As I pointed out in my other post, there is another character that is associated with mercy. You guessed it:
Tumblr media
Her story is literally called The Queen's Mercy and one of the many titles bestowed upon her (if you read the story) is Queen Aditi, the Merciful. (I've already done the math in this post here.)
Now, why is this so fascinating?
Mercy, by definition, is compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power toĀ punishĀ or harm. (Thanks dictionary.com.) But as we know from reading The Queen's Mercy, Aditi isn't merciful at all. She's cunning. Kim'dael goes to Aditi seeking sanctuary. What does she get in return? A Mercy Debt.
Tumblr media
Could this be considered merciful? I mean...she did not banish or harm Kim'dael. But she's trapped eternally, and literally owes her life. Kim'dael is a villainous character, no doubt - but that is not compassion or forgiveness. (Whether or not she deserves it is a different conversation.)
Now let's go back to Aaravos and the Merciful One, shall we?
If you look the images, Aaravos is clearly distraught, and yet the Merciful One appears calm, cool, collected. We can assume he's...well, granting mercy.
By what? Imprisoning Aaravos? This could very well be the moment he is imprisoned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But is it true compassion? Is it true forgiveness? Or is it, "I'm granting you something in my power because - even though it seems wrong to you - it's for the greater good." I could see Startouch Elf philosophy being cold and factual, distant and matter-of-fact - leaving no room for matters of the heart or emotions. (Doesn't this elf reference that Aaravos is in this position because of love [and I suspect has something to do with Leola]? If someone can get me their exact quote, that would be fantastic.)
This opens up a really interesting conversation regarding the term 'mercy' - because what I think is happening here is that there are two characters in power (The Merciful One and Queen Aditi) who are technically granting 'mercy' (although I am only hypothesizing based on the new Startouch Elf's name), and yet it is not at all merciful to the character. It's almost as if they're both saying, "Yeah, this sucks for you right now, but it's going to be better off for everyone else in the end." Kim'dael is 'imprisoned' by the Mercy Debt. Aaravos is literally imprisoned.
I mean, Kim'dael is in the same position as Aaravos' statue in the Sea of the Castout.
Tumblr media
I don't think this is a coincidence. I think both of these things will come back to bite our beloved Dragang. They are the ones who have to deal with the consequences, after all.
Did they deserve this treatment? For Kim'dael - I'm leaning towards yes, she is clearly a villain and has done horrific things.
And...we know that Aaravos has something to do with Aditi's disappearance.
But did Aaravos deserve this - imprisonment?
Now that is yet to be seen. And I have a feeling S6 will leave us all questions more than answers.

Guys I fear that Sol Regem might have a huge role in s6, and maybe 7
First, Zubeia says all Archdragons got a clue. What clue did he get??
Second, Karim tries to make him lead again, but Sol Regem is too tired and depressed. Still, heā€™s trying to heal his eyes.
Third, this: the sun was the first to betray the stars.
Apart from the literal obvious meaning of ā€œthe sun makes the stars disappearā€, could it also be related to Sol Regem and Aaravos? After all, only in darkness, gaze upon the fallen star.
OH.
OMG.
Maybe Sol Regem is key to stopping Aaravos? After all, why did Aaravos first defeat Lux Area? Apart from being the strongest army, it also has SUN primal energy, the Light itself that he corrupted. Maybe Aaravos is afraid that it would be able to defeat him??? Would Sol Regem be able to make Aaravos fade???
HEā€™S ALSO THE ONE WHO DID SOMETHING TO QUEEN ADITI. He ā€œswallowedā€ her. HOW. WHY. By being a star? So that the sun didnā€™t swallow him out first??
Thatā€™s also maybe why Karimā€™s whole arc is happeningā€” heā€™s trying to heal Sol Regem, for who the Sun has been dark for so long (which is why the stars are out). So when Sol Regem finally regains his powerā€” heā€™d help stop Aaravos??? Or at least be able to somehow. Otherwise Karimā€™s arc is pretty useless, except for SORT of starting some Sunfire civil war, which wouldnā€™t help anyone. I mean ig he did introduce the Bloodmoon huntress, but he couldā€™ve easily died after or disappeared. Instead, he has an army.
Also Sol Regem is hurt by the Dark Magic that AARAVOS gave to humans. So. Another connection.
Again. Could be wrong. The caption DOES use the word ā€œbetrayā€, not kill or whatever. Still. I like my theory.

A rambling analysis about Aaravos as a whole
Post Season 6, the enigma that is Aaravos FINALLY got a deeper dive into his character and backstory and we finally know three important things, (in my opinion) that are critical when creating a character in any form of media:
1. Motivations
2. Goal(s)
3. Whatā€™s keeping those goals from being fulfilled
1. motivations
itā€™s obvious that his motivation to everything he does is his love for Leola, and how heā€™s coping with being bereaved of his child. In addition, Iā€™d also like to address that his second motivation is for a world unlike the one the Cosmic Order and the Archdragons desire. Obviously, what I mean is the cycle of violence itself- and yes, Aaravos continues the cycle, but heā€™s also trying to break it with his startouch ability of prophetic visions, or how season 6 puts it, ā€œbecoming time blind.ā€
Tumblr media
Due to this ability, I think Aaravos instigated the Battle of the Storm Spire and manipulated Viren to make it happen because he wanted to force the elves and humans to unite under one cause. On the other hand, it can be argued that ā€œactually Aaravos is only causing harm, just look at Lux Aurea,ā€ and of course that seems like the easiest explanation for his actions, but I think I can refute that claim.
By corrupting Lux Aurea, he knew that by doing so, it would be enough to motivate the elves into a confrontation with Viren and the rest of the human kingdoms + their armies. Yes, Aaravos did say, ā€œdo you want to conquer Xadia?ā€ To Viren, but I believe that that was merely a way to goad him into conflict, and it shouldnā€™t be taken seriously because thatā€™s not one of Aaravosā€™s intentions or legitimate goals.
2. Goal(s)
Like I said before, Aaravos isnā€™t planning on conquering Xadia, heā€™s obviously planning on avenging his deceased daughter, by killing (presumably) everyone who approved of Leolaā€™s execution. Sol Regem was killed, and now as season 7 approaches, the Cosmic Order is next. Knowing that only a startouch elf can kill another startouch elf- according to the TDP Wikia page, itā€™s obvious that this is what heā€™s planning on accomplishing.
Tumblr media
The season 7 summary states that heā€™s planning on, ā€œinverting life and death,ā€ which to me seems like heā€™s attempting to revive Leola in some incredible feat of magic. Deep magic?
Putting his personal issues aside, when it comes to Xadia itself, Aaravos is planning on restoring the solidarity between East and West Xadia, and mending the continent as a whole, and heā€™s doing it through people like Janai.
As a character who is merciful, Janai is a revolutionary figure who struggles with also healing the old wounds between the dragon and elven part of Xadia and the human part of Xadia. Her perception of peace and mercy is why I believe that Aaravos is in a tandem mindset with her and wishes to keep her as a reigning monarch in Lux Aurea, or she wouldā€™ve been dead by now.
The Sunfire monarchs are influential historical figures- look to Sol Regem, whose hatred for humanity no doubt influenced the outcome of segregating humans into the west. And Aditi, whose voice was enough to motivate the succession conflict from tearing Xadia apart.
When Aaravos haunts Janai in her dreams, itā€™s a threat, but itā€™s also a warning. Itā€™s him challenging her to either become her grandmother, ā€œyour just like your grandmother,ā€ and also to beware of her fate, lest it become Janaiā€™s as well, ā€œI swallowed her,ā€ S5EP9. Because Aaravos disapproved of Aditiā€™s actions and influence, heā€™s trying to use fear to control Janai and keep her from becoming her grandmother before her. By that, Aditi may have been a ā€œwise and trusted leader,ā€ according to Zubeia, but I think she was also a cruel leader who had a skewed perception of mercy, (just look to Kimā€™Dael.)Yes, Aditi wanted to restore peace, but one act of benevolence (ending the succession crisis,) isnā€™t enough to justify one act of ā€œmercy.ā€ (Kimā€™Daelā€™s Mercy Debt)
3. Whatā€™s keeping those goals from being fulfilled:
Iā€™ll keep this one short, but itā€™s clear that The Cosmic Order itself is keeping him from accomplishing this goal. During the trial, Aaravos couldnā€™t stand up alone to them with his actions and thus resorted to verbal confrontation in order to convince the council to let Leola go. This didnā€™t work, and despite how powerful he is, Aaravos couldnā€™t forcefully use magic to prevent the council from killing Leola. With season 7 coming up, I think heā€™ll try to get The Merciful One to ally with him against the other members of the council. As much as he hates them for having Leola killed, perhaps Aaravos can convince TMO into regretting their decision in condemning Leola and to help stand up to the rest of the Cosmic Council, since TMO is the only one to have approached Aaravos post trial, probably due to a now shattered friendship.
Thatā€™s all for now! I might make a part two going more into depth, but this is it, thanks to anyone for reading my unintelligent yapping :)
