another busy weekend, another late reply. i think what i meant was just like it's kind of presumptuous to write a song about the interior life of your idol, despite having never met her or spoken to her. and it may be based off things joni herself has said (idk joni is a blindspot for me), but it goes a bit further than that to draw conclusions and mythologize someone who you have no idea how they felt about it then internally and how they feel about it now. and not only that, but she then compares herself to joni, to go as far as to say oh, we have walked the same path and i get it. which is so like???? but to imply even further in meta context of the album being her official foray into pop stadium tour stardom like "not me though. happy for you, and don't worry i sooooo get why you gave all this up, joni, but not me though. i'm built different ❤️" WILD to say to a seasoned veteran as green as Taylor was and expect her to be..... touched??

its not a bad thing to do, it's just brazen in a very 21/22 year old way that is hilarious in retrospect. we all think we "understand" our idols through consumption of their art when we're young and have little experience out in the world. this entire website is a temple to that belief and mindset. not to mention that whole album was taylor in her fanfic era, writing songs mythologizing and characterizing people she had little to no contact with outside of being a fan herself, so it's par for the Red course. (lest we forget her writing a fanfic song about her bf's GRANDMA). like of course joni mitchell, one of music's most standoffish figures currently living, wouldn't want to talk to a girl who not only wrote fanfic of her, but also simultaneously compared herself to joni as if she was her equal. how the hell else was that going to go over other than terribly lmaooooo???? it's even funnier in the current context of her place in culture because taylor's own control of her narrative is (seemingly) one of the most important things to her. she continues to work very hard to make sure we know her work ethic and the breadth of her talent and everything else and that's great! but while taylor has more tact than joni, to say the least, someone that obsessed with their own self mythologizing might finally understand joni's ire and she too would not be thrilled about a kid openly writing a song (for profit) wherein they make declarations about her and try to mythologize her interior life as she still lived and breathed.

Hi Slug!! I'm curious about some of the religious imagery in hypmic! Kuko is obvious and I think Doppo has talked about not believing in gods before but what's up with Jakurai? Is he meant to actually be Christian or is it just an aesthetic thing?

Usual disclaimer that I don't live in Japan, so I'm not talking about IRL Japan so much as Japanese media. Media isn't perfectly synonymous with real life and, of course, it's foolish to draw conclusions from the general (media and culture) and apply them to the specific (individual persons). With that being said, media is indicative of real life values and cultural concerns--for example, the American high school experience is a lot less interesting than in movies, but these movies reflect a romanticization of teenagehood so widespread in the US and areas with heavy US cultural influence that filmmakers take it for granted in their audiences--so I can talk about what assumptions inform the portrayal of religion in Hypmic.

As in a lot of Japanese media, religion is present but not explicitly mentioned outside of Kuukou. It's what I would call culturally religious as opposed to actively religious. Similar to how many works in the Anglosphere are steeped with Christian ideas and phrases even if the authors/works themselves aren't Christian (the Christian concept of sin, using "God" or variations as an interjection, etc.), many works written in Japanese are influenced by Shinto and Buddhist ideas. Some people in Japan are active worshipers of Shinto, Buddhism, or both, but many more have a somewhat relaxed approach. It's not uncommon for people to have a belief in a higher power, but the nature of this higher power isn't terribly well-defined. Many people will attend religious ceremonies for holidays or funerals but rarely pray to a higher power outside of moments of great stress. That is, being culturally religious. Traditions are fun and comforting, especially if they involve dressing up in fancy clothes, eating yummy food, and seeing friends and family. Even if you're not especially devout, it doesn't hurt to pray for a bit of luck before a big test, that your child will grow up healthy and strong, or that your recently departed ancestor will be at peace. For those in predominately Christian areas, you probably see plenty of this in your community--people who maybe go to church occasionally for companionship or holiday celebrations but aren't active worshipers. Or, perhaps, people who pray like, "Hey, if anyone's listening, can you lend me a hand?" Maybe you're even one of these people yourself. We can generally assume that most of the cast falls into this camp. Doppo and Hifumi go to a festival with a religious element--charms and rituals to bring good luck by appealing to Shinto deities--but I doubt either of them have a firm belief that these particular deities exist. They may think that there's some higher power...or not. But what's the harm in a good luck charm, right? And more importantly, it's fun to play games, eat, drink, and horse around with friends! But wait, does that mean these two are only Shinto or...Shinto-ish? Probably not. There's an expression that most Japanese people are "born Shinto, but die Buddhist." Shinto rituals tend to focus on matters of the living (although Shintoism has its own distinct funerary rites, sometimes combined with Buddhist rites), while non-devout Buddhists usually participate in Buddhist ceremonies only when loved ones die. We see Juushi and Hitoya with loved ones buried in Buddhist cemeteries, but it's safe to assume both observe Shinto holidays and customs in some fashion. We also see in the very beginning of TDD that Nemu and Samatoki have what appears to be a butsudan--a Buddhist altar--in their home dedicated to their deceased parents. "But wait," some might say, "I thought spirit worship isn't a part of Buddhism." That's true for some forms of Buddhism, but not all! Buddhism is enormously varied, and some of the (many, many!) forms of Buddhism practiced in Japan accept aspects of Shintoism. There's plenty of mixing, just as we see within individuals themselves. Again, the Hypmic characters may not fully believe that spirits exist. (Well, outside of Ramuda...) But it's a comforting thought that one's deceased family members are around in some form and can be a positive influence on one's life.

You’re on the Yamada bro’s family tracker LMAO. Ichiro says you don’t have to turn your location on, but he wanted you to be on it in case anything happened to Saburo or Jiro and he couldn’t be there.

Jiro unfortunately uses it to beg to bring home food whenever he sees that you and Ichi are at a restaurant together.

Grocery shopping with Sasara is a literal process

He keeps wandering off into different isles, always seemingly on the other side of the store. Use that ‘clip a balloon to your partner’ life hack thing cause it’s the only way you’re finding him on your own.

Whenever he does appear though, he’s always sneaking items into the cart, trying not to have you notice. And they’re always EXPENSIVE TOO !! He’s got that famous comedian salary so he excuses it by saying he can afford it- but this man is not cost efficient in the slightest.

Ichi's older brother

Ichiro used to call Samatoki in as a babysitter for Jiro and Saburo back in their TDD days. Whenever he had a client to go to, needed to run errands, or simply just wanted a day to chill- Samatoki was always on speed dial.

Nemu would also come along! The bros thought she was 100% cooler than Toki in every way LMAO

I will live and die with Ramuda basement Dice

Ramuda will never kick Dice out of his basement!! No matter the circumstances, whether you move in, bills start raising, or even if you and Dice don’t get along- he has a home with Ramuda as long as he needs it.

Jakurai wants a HOMEE

You starting your relationship with Jakurai is what compels him to start looking for a house. He was perfectly fine with a small apartment when it was just him- but with you in the picture he feels it’s time to start planning for a more permanent and stable future.

Doppo needs to stop accidentally sending disses to his boss

Doppo uses your private messages as his personal notes app sometimes. He’ll write down a to do list, ideas for rap verses, or just type keysmash when things get a little too stressful.

He doesn’t expect you to respond to any of his messages but when you do, whether giving him feedback or encouragement, he always gets super flustered.

Jiro's scandal

Jiro thinks that nobody knows about his secret relationship with you- but literally everyone knows HAHAHAHA. Saburo saw him holding hands with you one day and he told Ichiro about it- who then fawned about his lil bro growing up to anyone who asked how they were doing- and well, news certainly spreads quickly when it’s about the golden boys of Ikebukuro.

that bb story was so funny lmao hey siri play ‘can’t keep it cool’ by takano akira for how badly ichiro panicked at the thought saburo got a girlfriend and how he roped jiro into pretending he’s the princess of aoyama so he could practice leaving a good impression on her (even tho saburo DID NOT get a girlfriend and quite literally broke down into tears bc his brothers are stupid and it overstimulated tf out of him lol)

ik it was everyone’s first stage back and it kinda showed but there were plenty of moments that made you think ‘oh they still got it actually’ lol

i’m pretty sure i’ve watched at least one stream for each show except track 5 (i was off the grid) and dh rep live (IM SORRY) i don’t plan to go to jp to watch one either, unless these new gen actors somehow blow my mind in ways the legends era never did. but that’s a tall order bc the legends era defined so much of the characters despite not being canon. it was fun seeing the way the stage grew and how the actors grew into the characters and how it kept evolving until that era’s end

2019 hypmic’s clowned on the stage upon initial announcement bc what story could they possibly tell. well lmao!!!!! track 1 set the story straight and that’s when i knew the stage had magic 😭😭😭😭

i wonder lol!!!! i would have loved a leaders play to balance out having a tdd play in the legends era and ig i can still ride with one now!!!! but where canon’s at with its story makes me grateful the stage rebooted bc i personally couldn’t have seen how the stage would have adapted post 2nd drb stuff with its notable lack of women and the division beef resolving itself

maybe we can get the honobono hifumi doppo dynamic in stage tho!!!! get a proper nemu and samatoki duet!!!! lol do me a solid and have samatoki and ichijiku fight over nemu we got possibilities now with proper women

that’s a great question lol and one i don’t think i have an answer for. like the stage thrives in a state of non-canonicity but it drives me insane that there’s a subsection of hypmic fans who look at stage kuukou and don’t see how self-immolating he can be for others and have no reason to suspect he is. he’s the coolest and most shallow version of kuukou but that’s their canon and i genuinely hate it lmao

i’m a little partial to these quasi canon stories tho!!!! like i don’t think we would have ever seen nemu rise to her current rank without the stage so it’s neat to see the stage get utilised in that way. i’m personally interested in worldbuilding details no one else would be unless they were balls deep with no plans to pull out lol so the stage can keep surprising me there

i like that asakusa’s mics were all based on oni lore lol like jinpachi had an oni’s spiky club, doshiro had an oni axe and masamune fits in the silliest with a sake cup mic since oni are also known to love drinking lol

i also think kokuri’s drill mic was also silly lol and it’s so funny nobody knows why he has it

some words on my Pathologic/Amnesia crossover

Those who follow me or have seen my art in Amnesia hashtag may have seen me mentioning that I’m writing an Amnesia and Pathologic crossover fanfic, buuuut a) now it’s on hiatus cuz I’m kinda confused with my own ✨philosophical and psychological✨ thoughts that i want to fit in the narrative; b) I’m Russian, and, therefore, I’m writing in Russian so English-speaking community most likely will have no chance to read this fic even I’ll finish it someday (unless Google translate will happen lol). So I want to share some thoughts on the stuff I created in my head and in my Google docs just in case cuz I find them kinda interesting and am sorta proud with myself. So here we go

• There are Daniel, Weyer and Agrippa’s homeworld, Zerzura (Alexander’s homeworld) and also world where Pathologic events take place. Not only that, there’s a countless amount of parallel worlds (I stole borrowed this concept from His Dark Materials book triology by Philip Pullman). And yes, Zerzurians abducted humans for vitae from many, many different worlds but the world of Amnesia

• Weyer and Alexander’s love have a bromance, but she ended up dying in fire of apocalypse on Zerzura nonetheless

• Weyer was escaping apocalypse on Zerzura and opened the portal aiming to his and Agrippa’s homeworld, but due to the portal malfunction he ended up landing in Town-on-Gorkhon, meet Simon and other Kains, told them about Spheres and all that. Kains know everything but keep it totally top secret cuz, well, god knows what gonna happen if regular people will know. Weyer didn’t stay in ToG for long and moved to the capital (aka St. Petersburg) and started a medic career

• Weyer is one of the people who are responsible for Thanatica’s shutdown because he a) is sorta afraid that Dankovsky will reinvent Vitae; b) has been in Zerzura for a long time and knows perfectly how obtining an immortality can spoil the society to the point of no return leading to the apocalypse

• My fic which starts right after the Agrippa ending. Him and Weyer take Daniel to ToG to teach him the arts of owning the Sphere where no prying eyes of the ordinary world (and also of the Powers that Be). Kains are willing to help with the process. Yes, Daniel is obligated to learn Russian

• Sphere gives Daniel some kind of clairvoyance ability, and, as we know from TDD, he knows how to cut the lines™, which makes him kinda close to menkhu (but not the actual menkhu, because he is, well, not from the Kin)

• A lot of jokes about Daniel and Daniil basically sharing the same name

• Alexander will be resurrected - not by Thanatica but by Daniel taking his body and consciousness from the trap of The Shadow that has a smol dimension that is very much like hell for those who used Sphere for Bad Things

• Daniel takes a test in the Abattoir jumping to this huge pit only to meet Elise Zimmerman’s ghost and to ask for her forgiveness

• Oh and there’s also my OC Ariadne, a Zerzurian who got away from the apocalypse with Weyer. I ship her with Daniel and they have from enemies to friends to lovers dynamic

some funny things ive done on arena map.

basically i wanted to see the height differences and ended up creating a room in arena level w different models.

okay here we have toussaint and tihanas. i love to think that she's taller than him, because her ghost is obviously human sized, so yeah, here we have toutou and his waifu

then i tried to pick up Alexanders model from tdd and compare with Kita. im confused with the heights difference bc i used to think zerzurians are all of the same height. Tihana aint helping. theyre all different... idk how are they a species. ah yeah wraith man (Temaku prolly)

next we have Tasi and Leon just to show the size difference. yeah Leon is tall as hell. they love each other so much and theyre such great crewmates.

lastly we have Henri and Stalker (also to see size difference because OH MY GOD) and theyre friends.

i will try seeing these in the game but i think some of them will dissapear, because last time i tried importing Alex and Tihana's ghost they vanished from the map. ill show the resulta if succeed

As we lost our wonderful Sam A Mowry due to health issues earlier this July.

I'm glad I got to tell him and Richard Topping how much their characters had influenced me to play around with them and Agrippa and Weyer whilst making an AU to explore making stories around the characters I adore. TBH I love all four of TDD <3

RIP Sam A Mowry. A big thank you to you, good friend.
