Transformation Stages

Harvester/Ghoul transformation is something to me. While playing Amnesia and comparing characters' models in HPL Editor I was quite surprised with how it distorts a human, and we could see its effects in both Rebirth and The Bunker games. Came up with the idea of comparing different known characters on different stages of becoming a ghoul and tried some new technique...

Okay, I’ll be honest, I added too much shading to even recolour this one. So I’m leaving it like this. 🫠

But, here’s one I think you’ll like from me. Considering how I’ve just replayed The Dark Descent recently.

I only realized this due to a discussion with a friend I've had while streaming Amnesia Rebirth to her but there's actually quite a bit of symbolism to the design of Tihana's true form.

Whenever Tasi draws her loved ones - her husband, her first child, she has this tendency to always surround them with greenery, even in locations where foliage like that doesn't make logical sense.

She never surrounds anyone else with flowers like that in her sketches. She sees her loved ones as a source of warmth so bright and so powerful plants practically sprout out of them. Looking at it from that perspective, Tihana's true form becomes a living perversion of Tasi's art - the only tangible remnant Tasi has of her loved ones.

She resembles barren brambles, bearing no leaf or fruit. During the stream one of us compared her to a mycelium network - something fungal, some fungi notably being capable of parasitizing plants. Either way, viewed from this perspective, the visual thematically hammers home a major facet of the Empress' character - she is someone who desperately wants to force herself into Tasi's family structure, but she's incapable of ever belonging within it. She could never fulfill the role of mother as well as Tasi would. Even if she succeeds in forcing her to give up her child, she could never become the source of warmth her newly adopted daughter would so desperately need. All she would end up doing is entrapping another soul within her tower, for what may be all eternity. As much as she wishes it weren't so, Tihana is barren. She is cold. Though driven by a compassion toward a doomed unborn, the actions she ends up taking to try and save it are unimaginably cruel.

I had to give this a try with each of the colours. And it was worth it.

tasi's story got it so fucking bad every time i think about the cycle of loss and grief shes inevitably stuck into i go a little crazy.. and through the game its so obvious shes trying her best to *not* be mentally where she is physically bc haha thats the whole point she cant EVEN allow herself to be mad or to be terrified or to feel anything, she has to repress it all otherwise shes lost its so fucked up.. and its not even HER shes worrying about, its amari. she keeps focusing on a future where she and amari get to be happy and amari grows healthy and they can go to parks and play together and amari can learn everything with the amazing mom tasi was meant to be....... and no happy ending near this idealized future is real. and to think this trip was the perfect opportunity for her to get away from all the shit she just had been through :/
