August 7, 2023
By Maureen Lee Lenker
(Entertainment Weekly) — We'll always have Paris, but for a time, it seemed as if we might not always have Turner Classic Movies.
Since 1994, TCM has aired films, uncut and commercial-free, 24 hours a day, all enhanced by monthly themed and curated programming, hosted introductions and conclusions (known as outros), conversations with filmmakers and talent, and original content. In its nearly 30 years of existence, the network has expanded beyond its already estimable remit as a cable network-meets-film-school, with fan events including a film festival and cruise.
The brand also plays a key role in global film preservation efforts. Restorations of bigger studio titles are typically done by the studios themselves, but TCM is more often than not the showcase for such work — both on air and at the annual film festival. TCM won a Peabody Award in 2008 for its "commitment to film preservation and restoration."
In 2023 alone, TCM partnered with the Film Foundation and the studio to restore 10 classics for the Warner Bros. 100th anniversary, including 1932's One Way Passage, 1941's The Strawberry Blonde, 1959's Rio Bravo, and 1955's East of Eden, all of which screened at the film festival and aired on the network. Last year, TCM celebrated its expanded partnership with the Film Foundation with the premiere of a 4K restoration of the Elizabeth Taylor/James Dean/Rock Hudson epic Giant at the 2022 festival. (Going even further back, in 2007, TCM tracked down the rights to six "lost" RKO films, including William Powell comedy Double Harness and Ginger Rogers rom-com Rafter Romance, not seen in over 50 years).
But on June 20, all of that seemed to be in peril as news broke that the entire executive leadership team of TCM (most of whom boasted 20-plus years of experience with the network) were being laid off alongside other members of the staff. The latest round of layoffs, which network staff tell EW they were blindsided by, are part of Warner Bros. Discovery's continuing attempts to cut costs across the studio.
Some backtracking from the executives at WBD is alright (especially in terms of staff rehires and bringing back the TCMFF Director), but they cut away at something that wasn't broken to begin with!

A long rambling post about US Healthcare
Alright so waiting didn't really help me parse out what I want to say but a big pillar of our online community passed away suddenly because of what amounts- frankly- to the gross negligence and cruelty of the US healthcare system.
For those of you who don't know Furaffinity is essentially THE cornerstone of the centralized furry and monsterlover community and the site was, for a long time, run by a guy named Dragoneer LARGELY by himself. This website hosted community ads, moderated its own content, and maintained a welcoming and corporation-free space for artists and other creatives to do their thing. My involvement in furaffinity has been pretty low key but I firmly believe that monsterfuckers and furries are only spitting distance apart at best so I feel a strong camaraderie and sense of kinship with them. As for how Dragoneer ran Furaffinity, what I can tell you personally is that FA was one of only TWO websites that will allow me to advertise TCM and when I emailed to get ads set up and configured, Dragoneer answered those emails personally.
Dragoneer had chronic issues that were difficult to diagnose for a while and reading his twitter/journal posts paints a really depressing, heartbreaking story of frustration, misdirection, and the banality of pure evil. Dragoneer was denied care he deserved because of the bureaucratic void that is our healthcare system here in America. He was charged tens of thousands of dollars for inconclusive tests, ordered to wait at home with minimal or no treatment, and this culminated in his rapid decline and sudden death last night.
Our healthcare system is traumatic and one incident, one accident, one sickness can financially ruin any of us permanently.
It's awful. One of the reasons this is difficult for me to talk about is because my dad died suddenly and horrifically to Covid in late 2020 because our for-profit hospitals refused to prepare for a pandemic while our executive administration pretended nothing was wrong. My dad died two weeks before vaccines began rolling out and when my mom and I had to make the choice to end his care we were only allowed to see him for 2 minutes at a time, separately. My husband was denied entry altogether because he wasn't "immediate" family.
Personally, I have chronic health issues that regularly get ignored. I have a mandatory medication (of several) that has no generic and costs over 300$ for a 30-day supply and my pharmacy (I'm not allowed to change) sometimes runs out and I gap for weeks at a time, sending my brain function into the toilet.
If you're American please help by keeping healthcare reform a primary voting issue in both Federal and State/Local elections. We need officials who see what this is doing to us, not more 1%ers who will never have to worry about what to do with a $25k hospital bill (one of Dragoneer's latest) or even a $250k one (my dad's bill for daring to die in ICU). I know it's a rough ask but for the financially stable, consider legal recourse for rights violations (some lawyers work pro bono for health stuff, the point is to always explore avenues to push back). We can't go on like this.
If you're not American, please help us by raising awareness in your own areas. Most of us look to more socialized countries like Canada and the EU for examples of how to improve our current system and of course, we know things aren't perfect but it's an embarrassment and a tragedy that Americans can't access the quality of care our system should VERY MUCH be able to provide.
Anyway.
This was really long-winded but it hurts a lot to know that there are so many cases like Dragoneer, like my dad. People with serious or even chronic issues can't get the smallest scrap of compassion in this system that reduces us to inconvenient numbers that our for-profit system can squeeze pocket change out of while murdering us.
I'll post links if a fundraiser goes up for Dragoneer's family to help cover the funds but until then, thanks for reading my long and winding thoughts. It's very hard to tame the emotion with this particular issue.

The World in Deeper Inspection UPDATE Read: (Chapter 1: Pages 5 to 6)
About the comic
My style hasn’t changed fundamentally but the execution is deffo way better. The hand-lettering helps with the cohesion too.
It’s fun getting back into drawing sharper, stylised shapes. Stuff like Alexander Comic leans closer towards realism so I can’t bend and kink silhouettes as much RIP
Not much tweaking with this layout – the original’s composition is pretty decent. I swapped out the panel of “Grimsley putting away the teapot” for “Grimsley about to take a sip” so that the visual transition is clearer and makes more logical sense. Toned down the red in the palette. Redesigned the tea set to be more specific to the era, with a hint of Chinoiserie as a sneaky nod to TCM’s ‘Orientalism is a pervasive Western lens in every part of an English setting’ theme.

Cry Terror!
I’ve written before that sometimes a single poorly thought-out scene can sink a film. Conversely, sometimes a single well thought and executed scene can elevate one. Andrew L. Stone’s CRY TERROR! (1958, TCM) seems a tidy little thriller with a few improbabilities. Then three’s a scene in which Inger Stevens, as a woman whose family is being held hostage by extortionists, has to collect money from a room full of FBI agents. She’s on a tight schedule; she must deliver the cash in another part of town by a specific time, or her husband (James Mason) and daughter (Portland Mason, his off-screen daughter) will be killed. As she makes the transaction and races to the elevator, she tries to spit out as much information as possible as the agents bombard her with questions. Stone shoots her exit in one long tracking shot as lines overlap and build in tension until you’re almost jumping out of your seat hoping she’ll get out of there in time. From then on you forget the strange structure of the film’s opening or the thought that a criminal mastermind as meticulous as the one played by Rod Steiger would trust a speed addict and sex maniac (Neville Brand) to help execute his plans. Stone never lets the tension flag again. When the film ended, I wasn’t sure if I needed to check my temperature or take up smoking.
But there is that opening. An airline gets word there’s a bomb on one of their flights. Hearing the report on television (delivered by NBCs own Chet Huntley), TV repairman Mason realizes he was duped into building the bomb by an old army buddy (Steiger) who said it was a tryout for a government contract. Do you smell fish? It’s hard to conceive that anyone as intelligent as Mason would fall for such a cockamamie story. But he did, and before long, he and his family are being held in various locations by Steiger and a gang that also includes Jack Klugman and Angie Dickinson.
There’s a lot of good work in the film. Though Steiger seems to be channeling parts of his performance from THE BIG KNIFE (1955), at least he’s channeling a powerful performance that fits the character. Stevens makes a great damsel in distress who develops surprising levels of strength under adversity, while Dickinson is pretty much a revelation as a distinctly modern film noir femme fatale. You don’t get a lot of background on any of the characters, but between her character’s posh penthouse apartment and the way she breathes excitedly while describing how she’s prepared to off Stevens and her daughter with a stiletto, you get a vivid picture of a trust-fund thrill junkie. There’s an interesting tension in the film between the scenes with Mason’s family and their captors, which veer towards well-earned high drama, and more documentary-style scenes, some with non-actors, involving the airline and the FBI. You get a sense of the way terror can invade the real world. That tension’s elevated now by our knowledge of the many well-known actors in roles small and large. Throughout the film it’s hard not to think, “Oh, look, there’s Patty Duke’s TV father. There’s Quincy and Pepper Anderson. There’s Al Capone. There’s another Al Capone. There’s the three-eyed alien from THE TWILIGHT ZONE.” The horror is visited upon and/or created by people we’ve had in our living rooms. BTW, if you’re good, you can name all of those actors without looking them up.
