Hi all, new here but lifelong atheist and glad to find some company via /r/atheism
Hi all, new here but lifelong atheist and glad to find some company
I have a question for y'all.
Everyone here is more or less in agreement that invisible supernatural powers (gods, angels, devils, fairies, spirits, djinn etc) do not exist and are not meddling with our world all the time.
And yet, pick any population of humans anywhere on earth, any time in history, and they will have some belief system about super or supra natural beings and influences. Whether it be the gentle and multifarious animism of traditional Japanese culture, or the madly expansionist, heavily armed monotheisms coming out of the "cradle of civilisation" (in Western terms), the Inuit hearing the voices of gods in the creaking of the ice, Polynesians conversing with their dead ancestors -- ghost stories, spirits of the wood and water, gods of the mountaintops and sky, wherever you look, humans believe in The Invisible Powers and try to placate them and bargain with them.
When writers of fantasy fiction create alternative worlds for us to enjoy, create alien races or strange branching developments of human culture, one of the first things they build in (after some suitably "exotic sounding" names) is a signature religion -- fantasy peoples have Temples of This and Fanes of That, and go into battle roaring the names of their battle gods. SciFi peoples all have their "alien" belief systems -- perhaps only Roddenberry's Vulcans had, afair, no God-story by which to live. I found the treatment of religion in, e.g. Babylon 5 to be interesting in this regard -- the writers settled on a kind of unitarian universalism, the position that all religions are true, all faiths are partial and particular views of an immanent Divine Essence, all facets of some great luminous One. (kinda like the blind men and the elephant).
So what does it mean to you, my fellow nonbelievers, that the god delusion (as the ever abrasive Dawkins puts it) seems to be universal to humankind? That we find it hard to imagine a human or even an alien culture without it? Does it mean that we atheists are somehow outliers, that our brains are wired differently, that we're a kind of mutation? Or have there been atheists quietly, all along, in every human community, seeing through the shaman's scams but finding it wiser to say nothing because the mob is so easily aroused?
Is atheism a form of neurodivergence?
Or is it some kind of evolutionary trend -- that the factionalism and fictionalism of religion are no longer survival characteristics in a crowded and technocratic world, and religion itself is starting to die out because it no longer serves us well?

On a serious note, let me just say how amazed and grateful I am to Matt for creating Marion Lavorre and playing her so beautifully. She's sex positive, an amazing and encouraging mother to Jester, super gorgeous and talented, very successful, and in general just a fucking badass that completely charms everyone who comes across her. All that while also struggling with agoraphobia. I already loved her as a character but last night's episode just cemented my love for her even more. I'm so happy that she decided to go to the party, knowing that she had Jester and the nein there to help and encourage her. I'm so proud of her and I think all the nein were, too. Marion is such a great example of a character who's strong, independent, and successful while also struggling with mental illness, and an amazing show of finding strength through the people who care about you to help you do things you thought you couldn't.
Obviously she's not a perfect character, (no character is perfect) but I think she's amazing and I love everything she represents. Thank you Matt Mercer for bringing her to life.

Okay I just need to gush about Graduation for a hot sec
I love how this campaign is going so far. We’re only three episodes in but Travis has done such a good job at building this amazing, detailed world. I love the mechanic of the tavern and how they actually refer to the holograms as NPCs, because, yeah that’s basically what they are in-game. I love the idea of heroes and villains and how being labelled as “evil” doesn’t necessarily mean “bad”. I love the training dungeon where there are super encouraging skeletons and a spoiled bear named Susan. I love that this world was basically built on the fact that people were so bored of doing their damn taxes that they just decided to do professional larping.
The world-building in this campaign is so interesting and new, and I just hope Travis gets all the recognition he deserves for the great work he’s putting into it. Maybe I’ll make another post after I collect my thoughts a bit better (I haven’t even gone into the characters yet) but long story short I’m really proud of Travis and I’m already in love with this campaign.
